TWO OF A KIND...
“We live in a world that continues to place limitations on
our special kids. It's a relief
to know there's an environment where there are no such
limits. At REINS our twin girls
(Amie & Karrie) are accepted
for who they are today. The
challenges they face at REINS
help mold who they will
become tomorrow.”
-Lisa Almanderez
“Adison and Aiden were not
yet 2 years old when they
started riding and therapy at
REINS. They were unable to
sit up on their own. Riding
has helped so much. Nine
years on and they walk, run
and even do a bit of
hip hop dancing!”
-Danielle Frank
In our life time we are so fortunate to
have one child let alone two!!! I
would now love to share with you
four extraordinary families that
have had sets of TWINS that have
been riding here at REINS for over
“REINS has been one of the
few places where Mikayla
and Kacy can do something
they love without feeling
the limitations of their disability. We are so truly
thankful for each and every
person and horse that contributes to Mikayla and
Kacy’s joy every single
Saturday.”
-Laura Stoner
10 years. As many of us know it is hard
enough to raise one child let alone
TWINS. Can you imagine having to
raise two children with special needs?!
Well, I have been fortunate to see first
hand over the past 20 years these incredible families raise their TWINS to enjoy
life as only they can. Please read the
difference we have all made in these
families’ lives! At the same time, I
would like to thank all of you for
helping to support REINS making it
possible for these children to have a quality of “Victor & Daniel's Saturday doesn't start without
reminding their weekly REINS visit. We are very
life the parents can be
happy since the beginning in how they have inteproud of.
grated into the therapy; and all these years they
have acquired a great level of confidence and
trust with the horses they ride.” - Armida Ramos
Horse Spotlight: Finn
Finn is the newest of our several registered Norwegian Fjord
Horses at REINS. He is 12 years old and has many years to help
REINS participants learn to ride. His playful attitude and endless
energy adds a spicy new dynamic to the gelding pasture. He is
built stout, and durable, perfect for a therapy horse! Always eager
to move, Finn keeps his riders alert and engaged during their lessons to ensure they get the most out of their ride. From balls to
bubbles this horse is ready to play!! Keeping the pasture alive and
active is his main mission on his
free time; he is always ready for
another horse to join in his fjord
games! He is still learning his new
job as a therapy horse, so sometimes he needs a gentle reminder
to keep his attention on his riders
during the lessons. He is eager to
move and groove, so standing still
can be a challenge for him; practice makes perfect, soon he will be
great at it! We are so proud to announce our newest addition to
REINS supporters!!

How did we train our horses
to work in the lift?
-Show the horse the lift area, include taking them through the ramp
without working the lift.
-Allow the horse to see the lift working from outside the lift area, and/or
with a different horse in the ramp.
-Allow them to see the empty lift
moving next to them while they are
in the ramp, when they are comfortable then move the empty lift over
them back and forth.
-Move a person in the lift around
them, once they have accepted the
idea then move the person over
them, but not down onto them yet.
-When the horse is completely comfortable with the person moving
above and around them in the lift,
then we gently lower the person
down onto the horse, and raise
them off of the horse a few times.
-When the horse is ready we lower
a rider onto the horse and take the
lift off of the rider and exit the lift
area.
**Each of these steps is repeated
until the horse is ready to move
onto the next step; this may take
several days/weeks**

Student Spotlight: Kacy and Mikayla
The last lesson of the day on Saturday at 3:15, a large van pulls into REINS and
out comes two of the sweetest, most beautiful blonde haired, blue eyed girls we’ve seen.
Though they are both quite small (but always growing), their personalities are truly larger
than life. Kacy and Mikayla Stoner together encompass the feeling we all strive for here at
REINS. They are hard workers, and always greet us with smiles, ready to pick oranges,
check the mailbox, and find the occasional “magic wand”. They always do the sweetest
things for each other, showing their love in “twin fashion” not always by using words, but
knowing just how the other feels that day, and trying to brighten it somehow.
Mikayla has grown so much over the last year; not only with her physical
strength, but in her personality as well. About 6 months ago, I decided it was time for her
to start riding by herself. She had developed enough strength and drive to sit up on her
own. She loves riding by herself, and even on the toughest days, that sparkling smile
comes out. Lately Mikayla, “Mickie” as her family calls her, has been exploring new riding positions that can both challenge her physically, and give her a different perspective
while riding. The most physically demanding position is what we at REINS call “Sleeping Indian”, and though this position requires a lot of
focus and strength in the back and neck. Mikayla loves this position because she can see her horse’s feet! She’s always trying her hardest to
sit up tall like a princess, and constantly with a watchful eye looking for her twin sister, only to erupt in laughter when she finds her.
At the end of a long day at REINS, I am so fortunate to have Miss Mikayla to end my day with a big beautiful smile and those
bright blue eyes. REINS is so blessed to have such a supportive and loving family to serve. We love our twins!

Volunteer Spotlight
New REINS website
launches
mid-April 2015!
As any of our supporters know, REINS has so many unique
elements that make up our special program. One of the most
exceptional aspects are the volunteers that also participate as
students. Although all of these volunteers have some sort of a
disability, they make up the backbone of our volunteer program and we could not function on a day to day basis without
them. Carol Curtis, Jack Cunningham, Kristin Moore,
Sarah Nystrom, Amy Rutherford, Luis Sandoval, and
Erin Young all dedicate weekly hours to REINS and treat

their time here as if it were their paying job. They know the
ins and outs of the program as well as anyone. They know
every horse, every student, all the safety rules, and most importantly, always arrive with such enthusiasm and willingness
to work hard. We feel so lucky that these volunteers want to
give back to the same program in which they participate.
They help us in more ways than we can count-especially in
reminding us how much REINS means to its participants as
well as how fortunate we are to work with such special individuals! Thank you, ladies and gentlemen for all that you do!
