Exciting News! OverDrive is enhancing eBooks! We’ve added a science resource! Historical documents can be part of your personal collection! November 2014 Look for our new Teen Tech programs! New Reading Experience OverDrive Read is a browser-based eBook reading experience which supports fixed-layout books, honoring the book's original printed layout. Textbooks, children's classics, cookbooks, travel guides, and more can now be enjoyed on any web-enabled device using OverDrive Read. With progress comes change, so OverDrive Read will no longer work in older versions of Internet Explorer (i.e., Internet Explorer 10 or under). Users can simply upgrade Explorer or switch to the most current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Android, Safari, or the browsers on devices like Kindle, Nook and iPad. In other OverDrive news, the company is soon retiring the WMA format for audio books. Most audio books are now in the MP3 format, so we don't expect this change to impact many users. After November 1, you will only see audio books available for download in the MP3 format. This will simplify the download process for you, because MP3 titles are compatible on all platforms which run the OverDrive App, and can be transferred to a wide variety of devices. Don’t forget that now on OverDrive, Kids & Teens books have been separated from the overall collection. Coming soon, the eIndiana Consortium will extend checkouts to 21 days, and you will have the ability to have up to 5 items on hold at one time! The timeline for these changes has not been determined. Staff Spotlight Meet Teen Clerk Kiaya Martin If you have been to the Limberlost Public Library recently, then chances are you have met the new Teen Clerk, Kiaya Martin. She’s instantly recognizable for the energy and enthusiasm she projects. Information for the 16th Annual Kleiman Creative Writing Contest is now online! Get your own child - or an entire classroom of children started on their entries for the Kleiman Creative Writing Contest, open to 4th, 5th and 6th grades. All the contest documents are now online at www.kendallvillelibrary.org and include guidelines, a sample layout, and a sample scoring sheet so students know just what the judges are looking for. We are arranging for an author to visit the area in January, so look for more information about that soon! ScienceFlix is Now Online! “I absolutely love it,” Kiaya says about her work. “The most rewarding part is getting the chance to be a positive role model for teens and helping them become the best they can be!” Outside of the library, she says her family is her life. Kiaya and her husband have one large dog. “Bullet is our baby and is spoiled rotten,” she says. But they would like to start a little human family of their own very soon. She’s ready for that, and has the Master’s Degree to prove it. With her degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Indiana State University, she was a college professor and part-time preschool teacher. Now that she has moved to Rome City, her goals - and her job - have changed. “I originally wanted to get to know my new community better and get involved,” says Kiaya. “I also wanted to work in an environment where it can be challenging at times but also educational.” Another goal she has is to write a book. We think working at the library is a great place to start. This online database, available inside the library or remotely at www.kendallvillelibrary.org for Kendallville and Limberlost Public Library patrons, combines curriculumdriven leveled content, interactive features, and intuitive navigation into a single, highly-engaging digital resource for students in grades 4 to 9. Aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards and designed for unparalleled student engagement, ScienceFlix provides an in depth examination on more than 30 different scientific topics including Earth Science, Space Science, Life Science, Health and Human Body, Physical Science, and Technology and Engineering. Each of the 30 areas of study feature: Videos to introduce the subject and build background knowledge Lead Articles to build content-area knowledge Dive Deeper Articles to encourage a deeper level of understanding Inquiry Questions to develop students' ability to cite specific text evidence and support scientific analysis Project Ideas to integrate quantitative or technical information Experiments to develop the ability to follow multi-step procedures Quizzes to assess students' understanding of each of the 30 units Featured Careers to inspire budding scientists and provide typical career maps for each job opportunity. It is available online now at www.kendallvillelibrary.org. Patrons using ScienceFlix outside the library will simply need to log in with their Kendallville Public Library card number, which begins with 27516. 3 Suggestions for Historical Fiction Parents and children often ask us for historical fiction options, since it is a requirement in many classes. Here are our top suggestions: City of Orphans by Avi You usually can’t go wrong with a book by Avi, and City of Orphans is no exception. Imagine it is 1893, and you live on the streets of New York. You have to fight to survive and keep yourself safe. City of Orphans is about a boy named Maks who must try to save his sister because she was imprisoned for stealing a watch. Maks has to use his detective skills to save them both. The Boy Who Dared by Susan Bartoletti Another option is The Boy Who Dared, which is based on a true story and is written by Newbery Honor book author Susan Bartoletti. Helmuth Hubener is a German schoolboy during World War 2. At first, he admires the uniforms, the armbands and the beliefs of Nazis. However, as he learns more and sees how Jewish people are being treated, he begins to question what is right. Will he stand up for his beliefs or sit back and watch? Pick up this book to find out. A Faraway Island by Annika Thor If you think The Boy Who Dared sounds interesting, check out A Faraway Island by Annika Thor. Instead of having a male main character, it is about two Jewish sisters who escape from Vienna in 1939 and go to Sweden instead. They think they won’t be there for long, but six months turns into much longer. One sister, Nellie, adjusts and loves her new life, but Stephie has a hard time and longs for her old life. Reviewed by Leah Dresser, Children’s Librarian LEGO Club is a popular program...and for good reason. Who doesn't love these building blocks? This program is right after school on Mondays at 3:30 p.m., and that means children come with appetites. To help feed these budding builders, we are requesting donations of snacks. Items like chips, fruit snacks and crackers would need to be individually wrapped. Fresh fruit donated on a Monday would also be welcome. And remember, any donation you make is tax-deductible! This comic is for the people who also wondered “What happened in Budapest?” after watching the Avengers movie. One question: do Natasha and Clint really know the truth about Budapest? S.H.I.E.L.D. creates the first Avengers strike team but doesn’t want them to know their mission. Find out how this is possible by reading this thrilling comic. No worries, Phil Coulson is along for the ride, too! Reviewed by Rose Benjamin, Teen Assistant Side Effects May Vary By Julie Murphy What would you do if you were told you only had one more year to live? Have you ever heard of a “bucket list?” Usually, a bucket list consists of experiences individuals want to do before they die, like skydiving for example. Some bucket lists are adventurous and daring and others are very simple. In the book Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy, a sixteen-year-old named Alice gets diagnosed with leukemia and is told she has one year to live. Instead of your typical bucket list, Alice creates a revenge list, with the help of her friend Harvey, to get back at her enemies. Her revenge list back fires when she discovers she is going to miraculously live. Discover how life changes dramatically for Alice as she gets a second chance at life, but only this time… she faces the consequences of her actions. For Gamers at the Kendallville Public Library 9 LSTA Grant Leads to New Microfilm Reader The Kendallville Public Library recently received a $10,000 grant to purchase a new microfilm reader for the Russell Frehse Genealogy Room. This new equipment, called the U-Scan+, replaces an older model that is no longer being serviced or manufactured. The U-Scan+ offers a crisper digital image, important to researchers. "It’s the latest model of scanners on the market," said Adult Services Manager Mindy Patterson. "With the U-Scan +, it's easy to load the film, and items can be digitized and saved in a variety of formats using the touch PC. In addition to microfilm, it scans microfiche, cards, ApCards, 35mm film strips, color slides and more." “QuickStart touchscreen controls, easy movement of the film and the ability to simply frame and crop images make it user friendly,” said Patterson. This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Indiana State Library. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Its mission is to inspire libraries and museums to advance innovation, lifelong learning, and cultural and civic engagement. Their grant making, policy development, and research help libraries and museums deliver valuable services that make it possible for communities and individuals to thrive.
