Thanks to everyone who participated in the Animal Rescue Site Challenge,
Operation Scarlet was awarded $1,000 for being ranked the #1 Rescue in
the State of Pennsylvania. Everyone's diligence in voting daily for the
fourteen week contest is very much appreciated by the kids at the rescue.
In addition to the contest, several of Scarlet's kids had their stories featured
on the web site. Links to Prancer, Misha and Foxy's stories were in the
December Newsletter and links to Cheyenne and Millie's stories were in the
November Newsletter. Thank you for recognizing Operation Scarlet in your
rescue stories.

Operation Scarlet also submitted a story to the Rescue Site Shelter Story
contest, and although our story did not win, it was noticed by the
San Francisco SPCA. They were so touched by Star's story
that they asked if they could feature his story and his
picture at their annual Bark & Whine Ball in March of 2010.

From the Heart
2009 was a very good year for Operation Scarlet
That was due in part to all of the dedicated, passionate Shar-Pei lovers that comprise this organization.
Twenty two homeless Pei came through Scarlet’s doors in 2009. O.S. received a $1,000 grant three
times in 2009 for being number one in the state of PA in the animal rescue challenge.
O.S. accomplished that feat because of your determination and diligence in voting for O.S. every day
for three months.
New adopters became a part of the O.S. family. Some took it one step further and became Associate
Members. Others signed up for the first time to be a part of the Sponsor A Pei Program.
O.S. had two very successful luncheons and many of you attended in order to celebrate the success of
O.S. in saving homeless Shar-Pei. Star, an O.S. Pei, received a Hero Award for saving his adopter
who had a heart attack,
Star was the very first canine recipient to receive the Hero Award. Vander Moyer and Tai Tai Rotandi
were the winners of the Valentine King and Queen of Hearts contest. Star Harden was also presented
Rescue Dog of the Year Award in 2009.
I wish I could personally acknowledge each and every one of you who have so willingly and
generously given so much to keep Scarlet’s doors open. We have a common goal – to save Shar-Pei.
We work as a team and also as a family.
A Shar-Pei family that has lots and lots of love to give. Our accomplishments are many because of
each and every one of you. Scarlet’s kids thank you. I thank you. Now let’s look forward to another
great year.
Another year of accomplishments. Another year of saving more wonderful Shar-Pei.
Happy New Year to All of You and To All of Scarlet’s Kids

Happy Tails
Hi my name is Alize and I would like to share my story …
My journey to Operation Scarlet began when my family surrendered
me to the Brooklyn Center of Brooklyn, New York in March of 2005.
When Aunt Dawn heard about lil ol me she said of course we will
take her. But often Aunt Dawn does not have room at OS, so she
calls in some favors as she does for all us Pei kids. She found
people on the Operation Scarlet underground railroad to help assist
with transporting me to Operation Scarlet. Although I was scared I
enjoyed the car rides because the nice people who transported me
told me that I was on my way to OS to find my forever home. I
had a few stops along the way, one in New Jersey and one to
Smoketown Veterinary Hospital where I met Dr. John Hall. The
other kids there told me how great Dr. John is and not to be scared
and sure enough they were right. He fixed me right up and with my
clean bill of health in paws I finally made it to Operation Scarlet.
In April of 2005 my dreams of a forever home had finally come true. My mama took me home to
King of Prussia, Pa where I had this green stuff. Mama calls it grass but it sure felt weird on my paws
as I am a city girl at heart but I sure did get used to it pretty quick. Mama would take me to
Wilson Farm Park or Valley Forge National Park where I saw deer, ducks and when the kids were not
playing baseball mom lets me run around in the fields. We also would go visit mom's friends and
watch the kids play baseball and sometimes after the game was over I was allowed to play in the
field.
I really like when mama and I go on vacations, like to the Jersey Shore. There, I get to sun bathe
during the day and run around and play in the sand at night, after most of the people have left the
beach of course. Mom has also taken me to Georgia where we stay with mom’s best friend’s family. I
like it there because there is lots of wide open space for me to run around and play with the kids.
We also went to Granny’s house where I got to meet my cousins, all 5 of them. I had fun with them
running up and down the fence line in the yard.
Mama and I now live in Philadelphia. Yes ma'am I am back to my
roots of a city girl. Although there is not too much grass here I really
don’t mind cause mama takes me on walks all over the city. We go
the local parks to play and when mama goes out to eat sometimes I
get to go with her and the waiter/waitress always bring me my very
own bowl of ice cold water, it makes me feel special. I also get to
spend time with my friends Bella and Dobbs. They are 2 long haired
Chihuahuas. At times I can be a bit of a bully but our Mamas are
working on that with us. For the most part I am a laid back girl and
I love lounging in the sunshine on my favorite blanket or when Mama is not home I like the fuzzy rug
in the bathroom. Mama spoils me with lots of love and treats, but not too many as I have a sensitive
stomach. Some of my favorite times are just simply sitting out on the front stoop with mama just
relaxing in the sunshine.
Thank you Aunt Dawn for helping me find my forever home. I have truly found my forever home and
I owe all the THANKS to you, Dr. John and all the helpers at Operation Scarlet.
XO - Alize

Winter Pet Tips for Your Dog
With the onset of winter it is more important than ever to protect your pet from potential hazards.
1) Thoroughly wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice.
He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws. A
solution of warm soapy water should be used to remove any residual traces of potential toxins.
Although there are some newer products that are considered to be pet safe, there are many on the
market that are toxic to your pet.
2) Never leave your dog alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the
winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
3) Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm—dogs can lose
their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other
season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags.
4) Do not leave your pets outdoors for long periods when the temperature gets below freezing.
Indoor dogs need time to adapt to cold temperatures. They must build up a thicker coat and get their
footpads toughened for snow and ice. Pets that are exposed to the cold can develop hypothermia or
even frostbite. Ear tips are especially susceptible to frostbite.
5) Make sure that your dog has a warm place to sleep such as a cozy bed away from drafts.
6) Many animals are less active during the winter, and don't need as many calories as in the warmer
months. Reduce your pet's diet during the winter, to avoid excessive weight gain. You may wish to
consult with your veterinarian about the right winter food portions for your pet.

Rainbow Bridge
An eternal flame is glowing in loving memory of
Su Ling Rowe
Wrinkles Millich
In Memory of Chyna Rodenkirchen
Chyna passed over the Rainbow Bridge November 14th, 2009.
Our story begins 3 months after my canine friend Kacie (13 ½)
went over the Rainbow Bridge in July 1999. A phone call from
Dawn in October 1999 (I had decided I was not going to have
another dog in my house) about a stray found in Maryland. I
told Dawn I was not ready yet. She asked me to just come visit
Angel. So, I took trip to OS to meet Angel with Auntie Dawn
present. The meeting changed our lives forever. I would say she
was not going to let me leave the room until I said "YES" I will
adopt her. She showed me her best behavior and before I said
"YES", I had told Dawn, "I will let you know tomorrow". At this point she was sitting on my feet with
her back facing me and she turned around and she put her paws on my legs and
leaned over to my cheek and wowed me with kisses. Dawn could not believe it.
She wanted me to choose her. That was 10 years ago and I feel so blessed to
have had Chyna in my life. Who picked Who? I would say Scarlet had a hand
in the choosing, she knows who one of her "kids" should go to their "forever
home" with. Auntie Dawn was always very special to Chyna. She always knew
when Dawn was visiting next door and she always ran from door to door (3 of
them) watching her leave the driveway. Picture attached is what Dawn saw last.
There are many stories about Chyna that I could tell but I remember her most
for her unconditional love for all her furry friends that lived with us, (what fun
they had), her love for being around people, her greetings when I would return
home, and her love of cheezits. She was very smart and understood most of what I said to her. (she did
have selective hearing though). ☺ I took one of Dawn's dog obedience classes the first 6 months that I
had her and what she learned actually helped save her life one morning when she escaped from my
daughter's house in South Carolina (you know how they love to do that). Witnesses could not believe
what they heard and saw. To me it seemed like she was meant to stay with me. Chyna had her medical
problems as she got older and one was blindness. It was harder for me than her. She used to listen to
my voice to guide her. How precious she was following my voice and trusting me. Chyna and I
touched each others lives in so many ways. We grew older together, I used to say, "We both have
wrinkles Chyna but they are mostly smile wrinkles because we love each other". I know that I spoiled
her and treated her like a Princess. She deserved it all for being the wonderful companion to me that
she was. I can envision her running in the fields with all our canine friends having no pain and seeing
again. Thank you from the bottom of both our hearts Operation Scarlet for bringing us together. I will
miss her forever but know I will see her again someday. We loved each other. Ellie Rodenkirchen
Each month we will feature a tribute to a Pei that has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.

Hello, my name is Suki
I am a two year old female Shar-Pei who was a stray from NYC that
just recently arrived at OS. I have been having some trouble seeing,
and as you can see, I have missed a few meals recently. But the nice
people at Operation Scarlet said that they would take care of me and
maybe schedule me for surgery to help me see better.
I have been told that I am very sweet and well behaved and as soon
as I am ready Operation Scarlet will help me to find my forever
home. I can't wait!

My name is Star. I don’t remember how I came to be
or what my first family was like. I don’t remember the day I
suffered the traumatic injuries that resulted my losing an
eye.
I do remember being adopted from an Arizona
shelter, only to be left at a Pennsylvania shelter a short
time later.
I remember that when Operation Scarlet came and
rescued me, they promised to find me a real forever home. I waited there for
almost a year before someone was able to see my inner beauty and I was
finally adopted.
For the next four months my person, Fred, and I lived together on his
yacht.
We quickly bonded and became best friends. Life was good. I finally had
my forever home.
One morning I awoke to find that something was terribly wrong with Fred.
He could not move and did not respond to my gentle nudges. I immediately ran
out to the bow of the boat and howled, hoping to get help for my dear friend,
but no one came. I ran back to let Fred know I was trying to get help. I spent
the next two days frantically howling on the bow of the boat and then returning
to comfort Fred. I quietly promised him that I would save him, just as he had
saved me.
After what seemed like an eternity, someone finally heard my distress calls
and called 911. Fred had suffered a heart attack. Fortunately, he would make a
full recovery.
Life is good again for Fred and me. I have to wonder though, was my long
journey to my forever home just a coincidence? Or, had fate stepped in and I
was destined to wait for Fred to adopt me so that I could save him?
