This is a gathering of worldwide conservation groups to discuss policy and advocacy for the future of hunting and conservation. I had a long flight over and had time to reflect on the direction of the club and the improvements underway as a part of our long-term growth strategy. But no matter what excellent idea or “next best thing” can be thought up, there is one constant for Dallas Safari Club. Every member is important − from the newborn Life Members whose proud grandpa signed them up, to the busy young adults of the Conservation Society, to the “70-plus” crowd who still enjoy member activities, serve on committees and are vital to this club. In this issue, you will find an obituary for Jimmy Boy Watson and next month one for Steve Christenson, both devoted DSC members, volunteers and directors. We mourn the loss of our fellow hunters, and we celebrate the contribution they and other founders of this club have made. Also in this issue, we mark the passing of L. Irvin Barnhart, who was active in SCI, DSC and HSC over the years, and made tremendous impact on the hunting community. Without men and women like this, we would not be where we are today. It’s that simple. We can all have satisfying lives full of achievement, family, hunting, but our members seem to get a lot out of going the extra mile for DSC, for each other. They treat each other with respect, help each other out, and manage to have a lot of fun in the process. And it shows, in the growing membership, in the smiles and energy at the show, in the fellowship at any gathering of DSC members. Hunting Safari operators are key in combating this issue through various means including anti-poaching, educating the community on the benefits of conservation and in particular sustainable harvesting. The very presence of hunters is a huge deterrent to poachers, cattle herders and illegal loggers. It may come as a surprise to the couch conservationist but the revenue generated by hunting plays a crucial role in protecting rhino, lion, elephant and their supporting habitats through the payment of trophy fees, concession fees and various license fees. A large amount of this revenue supplements much needed income to the wildlife divisions, who are also in desperate need of funds to complete their daily activities. It is a known fact that unutilized areas often become over run with cattle and farms, it is human nature to take over something that is not used. Many areas are not viable for non-consumptive tourism such as photographic safaris; however, in most cases hunting companies are able to play a key role in sustaining the viability of these remote areas as tourist destinations. It has been proven that professional hunting is beneficial to conservation; hunters need the wildlife to make their living and the healthier the wildlife populations in his concession the more successful he will be. However, having said this, we acknowledge that not 6 | D A L L A S S A FA R I C L U B N E W S all hunters keep sustainability in mind when hunting. Hunting clubs, organizations and associations have a duty to ensure that ethical and sustainable hunting is practiced within the industry by enforcing stricter criteria for those who represent the hunting industry. These organizations and associations should also enforce harsher penalties for those who tarnish the industry with unethical practices. The members of APHA believe in ethical hunting practices including the practise of fair chase, whereby the animal has a reasonable chance of escape. Those who are against hunting often condemn the practice without considering its benefits to the environment, wildlife and rural communities. They simply cannot get past the notion of the killing of animals and are therefore unable or refuse to see the bigger picture. If hunting were to cease many wildlife areas would be left unmanaged, unutilized and open to human encroachment, spelling the end of the very wildlife conservationists think they are saving when they call for a hunting ban. Ethical hunting allows for a stronger, healthier generation of animals to flourish by taking out the old and making way for the young. Healthy repopulation of wildlife and habitat protection is what every conservationist should strive for; conservation is a science and should be conducted rationally and not emotionally. CT BIGGAME.ORG BIGGAME.ORG MAY 2015 | 7 RELOADING BY TERRY BLAUWKAMP Dumb Mistakes There are many ways to get in trouble without even trying. Even purchasing ammo can be a nightmare if you are not wide-awake. For example, just recently a fellow wanted to give me a box of 7mm ammo because he had purchased it “by mistake”. It seems he walked up to the clerk and asked for a box of 7mm Remington Magnum ammo. The clerk apparently heard only, “7mm.” So he handed him a box of 7mm Mauser Remington (brand) ammo. Neither one of them caught it so away he went. He was just very lucky that he did not fire it in his gun, as it would have ruptured the case and mostly likely injured him. What is confusing is how many cartridges there are that sound alike. The 7mm’s are a good place to start. There is the 7mm Mauser, 7mm-08 Remington, 7-30 Waters, 7 x 65 R, 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm Remington SA Magnum, 7mm Wby Magnum, 7mm Dakota, and 7mm STW. As you can see, just buying the correct 7mm ammo is a project. We also have the .300 Savage, .300 Winchester, .300 Weatherby, .300 WSM, .300 H&H, .300 RUM, .300 Dakota, .300 Rem SA Mag.A couple more examples of confusion are the 6.5mm cartridges. I remember a conversation I overheard while standing in a little store in British Columbia where a lady came in for supplies and asked the clerk for a box of 6.5’s. Her husband needed ammo, and while she was to get some groceries and supplies, she might as well pick up some ammo too. Oh, oh, what KIND of 6.5 does he have? Could he have a 6.5 Jap or maybe a 6.5 Carcano, 6.5 Swedish, 6.5 Remington Magnum, or a 6.5mm x 57. There was no way for her to know, as she just could not pick up the cell phone and call him to ask. The clerk was very helpful as he was able to look up past purchases at the store, and found that last year her husband had indeed purchased some 6.5mm Jap ammo. So they took their best shot and she took the Jap ammo with her. I sure felt sorry for her, as she did not want to bring the wrong ones back home. At least she did not have to choose what weight bullet to choose as the store only had Norma ammo and in only one bullet weight and style. 8 | D A L L A S S A FA R I C L U B N E W S Last fall on a visit to a major sporting goods store, a fellow walked up and wanted a box of “tirty-tirtys.” The clerk asked him if he wanted 150 grain or 170 grain bullets. He did not know. The clerk followed up with asking how about Remington, Federal, PMC, or Winchester? Still no answer. Then she asked if they were Core Lokts, Power Points, or Silvertips. Finally he said, “Just give me the ones in the green box”. That is the attitude of a great many hunters, but at least he had the right caliber. Even all this is confusing enough, now build in the factor of all the different kinds of bullets in a given bullet weights per manufacturer. Considering the above situation with the 6.5ammo in Canada, what if the buyer was sent to get a box of .30-06 Springfield 180-grain ammo. Federal Cartridge has a 180 grain Hi Shok, Fusion, AccuBond, Nosler Partition, Tipped Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, and Sierra BT. The choice in Remington ammo is fully as great. They have 180-grain Core Lokts, but they come in Pointed or Round Nose. Also “Ultra” Core Lokt and a Bronze Point, plus they have Sciroccos and Swift A-Frames. Winchester has their share of Power Points, Silvertips, Ballistic Silver Tips and a host of other choices, and this is just the three major manufacturers. Add in the half dozen other smaller producers, and the situation can be mind boggling. So when the clerk hands you the ammo, double-check it to be sure it is exactly what you want. F R I S B I E, J R . Prince Rupert Harbour on Kaien Island, British Columbia was where the 73-year old workhorse tugboat, the MV Parry, lay at anchor waiting for us on June 7, 2014, the first day of our fishing trip. Inhabiting the neat city of Prince Rupert were 13,000 souls. We had flown 480 miles north from Vancouver to reach this container, coal and grain shipping port, part of the Pacific Ocean’s famed Inside Passage stretching from northeast Washington state through western British Columbia to southeastern Alaska. Rain fell lightly but steadily that morning, the sky was overcast and grey calling for a light sweater. We had breakfast on board as the Parry weighed anchor and Captain Mike Boskovich began putting it through its paces to chug toward the fishing grounds. Scores of islands passed by as the tug effortlessly plowed through the cool Canadian waters. There was not an abundance of space in the small cabins below-deck, just enough for two and their baggage. The tug trailed five, 18-foot, custom-built Bobcat skiffs with 50 horsepower, four-stroke Honda motors. Three people and their fishing accoutrements would fit comfortably within the skiffs. After a couple hours, the tug dropped anchor and we got ready to fish. Strong rain gear and Mustang Floater Coats were provided to us by Mike Wright, the ship’s “do-anything” guy. White rubber boots completed the ensemble, but I elected to use my rubber Muck Boots that I had purchased in Alaska a couple of years previously. Our rods were 10-1/2 foot Berkeley mooching rods and the reels were the solid Shimano 4000 series. This was standard fare for the Canadians. Our bait was herring with the heads cut off: about 6-7 inches of salmon 10 | D A L L A S S A F A R I C L U B N E W S temptation. Gená and I listened to the first-day instructions on the fantail and reviewed a map of the surrounding area and the suggested fishing sites. The Parry’s fishing guide, Duncan Browning, split his time during the next few days on each skiff and was always within radio range if troubles were encountered. Usually, all the skiffs ran together in the same general area but those who had fished there before and knew their way around sometimes hit other spots before joining back with the group. Otherwise we were each essentially on our own to decide where we wanted to fish, run the skiff, figure out where we were and where the tug was, bait our hooks, use the reels with which we were unfamiliar (but it was not that difficult to figure them out), fish with barbless hooks, hook and catch the fish, wrestle them to the skiff, use the net, take our “hero” photos with the fish, and then find our way back to the mother ship. Six of the other anglers had been on that tug many times and were intimately familiar and comfortable with the routine; the exceptions were us and one fellow, Andy Pilmanis, a PhD from San Antonio. Andy, however, was a real fisherman and sailor and boat owner. That left us two landlubbers initially looking askance at our bait bucket and skiff. It was to be a learning experience and the first thing we intuitively figured out as we left sight of the “ ” BIGGAME.ORG Gená and fishing guide Duncan Parry was to keep the others in view at all times! The second thing we learned was that it was not that hard to figure out what to do and then do it. But, no fish were braving the rain to seize our offerings that first afternoon. Probably more significant was the fact that everyone delighted in watching so many killer whales swimming around us. But, the consequence was that the salmon left for parts unknown when they saw the size of the teeth on those predators. The end result was that all the fishermen were skunked, and their raingear was wet, but we were dry underneath and happy to be in such beautiful surroundings. The next day, Gená and I got a late start. We fished until it was time for lunch and we back-tracked to the Parry to eat and get a quick nap while the boat moved to another location. Duncan Browning was our magnificently hirsute guide for the afternoon. He was English, 26 years old, friendly, a fishing guide and ski instructor, and this was his first year on the Parry. We were more successful with Duncan as our teacher; well, it is more accurate to say that Gená was more successful as she fairly quickly landed a nice pink salmon followed by a rockfish under his tutelage. The other skiffs were having more success, too: Andy Pilmanis from Texas landed two kings at 17 and 23 pounds; Art Carter from Washington caught a king weighing in at 12 pounds; and, Mike Russell from Salem, Oregon, managed a 10-pound swimmer. Rockfish, black bass and assorted others completed everyone’s catch for the day. Canadians Bob and Kathy Jordan started Westwind Tugboat Adventures 40 years ago with their first restored tug plying the Inside Passage waters. Added to the fleet in 1979 was the restored 1941 Union Jack. Bob and Kathy’s trips became wildly popular. The wooden, 85-foot, 1941 MV Parry was the next craft to be bought, restored and added to the popularity of the fleet in 1987, its history was always as a working boat. BIGGAME.ORG Originally built for the Canadian Navy in WW II, the Parry was sold to the Hydrographic Service and it virtually never stopped working. Sold again in 1968 it eventually wound up in Bob and Kathy’s loving hands almost 20 years later. After the Union Jack was retired in 2009 the 1929 Merry Chase was acquired, a 60-foot fishing boat which was converted and restored and put back in service last year, in 2013. Bob and Kathy live on the Merry Chase and accompany the Parry on its cruises carrying extra food and supplies and running ahead to scout out new fishing grounds. “Follow The Fish” became their motto, and that is exactly what they do best: during the fourmonth fishing season of May 25 to September 29 they are fishing Langara Island (Queen Charlotte Islands), Prince Rupert and Bella Bella. An amazing 70-percent repeat clientele history is a testament to their care and service, so they must be more than good all the time! Author with a fine catch The next four days began to run together, with numerous fish of different types were caught. A halibut was “accidentally” caught by Art Carter when his bait remained on the bottom too long. The sole flounder to be added to the larder was also caught while dragging the bottom. Rockfish of many different types eagerly and often committed hari kari for our fishing pleasure. All too soon it was time to return to Prince Rupert. The fish that were being kept were either filleted, boxed and frozen on board the Parry or prepared for delivery to St. Jean’s Cannery in Nanaimo with instructions for smoking, flavoring with peppercorn or Cajun hot smoke, made into lox or filleted into steaks. This was a unique trip. Duplication would be difficult − after all, how many people can boast having beautiful 1920- and 1940-era tugs to accommodate every fishing, sleeping, and dining need? CT MAY 2015 | 11 12 | D A L L A S S A F A R I C L U B N E W S BIGGAME.ORG HUNTING NEWS B&C World Record Moose Verified A bull moose taken by a hunter in 2013 in Yukon Territory has been verified by the Boone and Crockett Club as a new World’s Record. The new World’s Record was taken on a self-guided hunt by Heinz E. Naef of Dawson City, Yukon. He was hunting along the Yukon River near Stewart Island on Sept. 22, 2013. With a final score of 263-5/8 Boone and Crockett points, the bull has the largest antlers ever recorded for the Alaska-Yukon moose subspecies. The previous record, taken in Alaska in 1994, scores 261-5/8. These are the only two specimens on record to score over 260. The third-largest bull scores 256-6/8. Naef carried a .303 British with open sights and 180-grain Winchester ammunition. The hunter stalked to within 35 yards of the big bull before taking the shot. Naef was hunting for winter meat, not a trophy. He removed the antlers from the skull with a chainsaw, nicking them in the process, and did not keep the cape for a shoulder mount. The antlers measure 75-5/8 inches at the greatest spread. The left side has 17 points and a palm measuring 17-5/8 inches wide by 51 inches long. The right antler has 19 points and a palm measuring 23-6/8 inches wide by 50-7/8 inches long. The antler circumferences are 8-4/8 and 8-7/8 inches on the right and left sides, respectively. CT With a final score of 263-5/8 Boone and Crockett points, the bull has the largest antlers ever recorded for the Alaska-Yukon moose subspecies. The previous record, taken in Alaska in 1994, scores 261-5/8. TEXAS HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) that is born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course. Minimum age of certification is 9 years of age. Course is one full day, with lunch break. For more information and/or to register, please contact Charles Preslar (972) 270-8688 BIGGAME.ORG MAY 2015 | 13 GRANTS IN ACTION A New Roof for Rifa A grant to Zimbabwe Hunters’ Association for $3,500 provided funds to assist with refurbishing the roof on teacher and student accommodations at Rifa Conservation Education Camp. Irvin Barnhart Irvin Barnhart died on March 17, 2015, surrounded by family and loved ones. Irvin was the son of Paul F. and Virginia Barnhart. Born in 1943, he was named after Virginia’s father, Leslie Leroy Irvin, inventor of the rip cord parachute. Irvin attended River Oaks Elementary School, Kinkaid School, Virginia Military Institute and earned a degree in geology from the University of Texas in Austin. He was employed as a field geologist for Consolidated Oil and Gas out of Denver, Colorado until returning to the family business where he joined his father and brother, Paul, in oil & gas, ranching, real estate and investment endeavors. From a young age, Irvin enjoyed the outdoors, spending many days exploring and hunting on family ranches in South Texas. As a child, Irvin lived on the third floor of his family’s River Oaks home which had a shooting gallery where he could shoot a low caliber rifle in his room. His room was decorated with hunting trophies, guns, and collectibles that Irvin had put together. In 1972, after the passing of his mother, Irvin, his father and brother went on safari in Kenya. This safari was a life changing experience for Irvin. He fell in love with Africa and during his life, made 81 trips to 16 countries in Africa. Irvin hunted six continents of the world. He loved to hunt birds and big game in South America and hunted in Canada, Asia and Europe as often as he could. During the peak of Irvin’s hunting career, he was the most active hunter in the world. He was also one of the most beautiful shots. Many have said that the rifle was just an extension of him. In 1991, Irvin married his wife of 23 years, Wendy Giese. Wendy joined Irvin on many of his hunts and she became a very accomplished hunter in her own right. They loved hunting the world together, visiting friends, and shopping where Irvin could never just buy one of something. In 1993, Irvin was presented the prestigious Weatherby Foundation International Trophy by Gen. H Norman Schwarzkopf. Irvin’s passion was not just hunting. It was the appreciation of seeing wild game in their natural habitat. Irvin spent much of 20 | D A L L A S S A F A R I C L U B N E W S his time raising different species of wild game on the family ranch. For the past 30 years, Irvin raised 28 different species of game and found most enjoyment not after the shot, but simply watching the animals in their natural environment. Irvin’s philanthropic efforts were focused on conservation and preservation. He was a member of over 40 conservation organizations, including Dallas Safari Club. Irvin was also instrumental in teaching shooting and hunting skills to hundreds of children. He loved taking children on their first hunts on one of his ranches. He donated many hours of hunts on his ranches to help raise funds for conservation. Irvin is survived by his wife, Wendy Barnhart, and his brother and sister, and nieces and nephews. He was a giant in the hunting world and the world will miss him. Dallas Safari Club sends its condolences to the family and friends who will miss him, and gratefully acknowledges the contributions that Barnhart made to conservation, education and hunter advocacy. The height of the rub often indicates the size of the hog. Rooting is easily recognized because it looks as if the soil has been plowed. Most often rooting takes place over a large area. Some rooting holes can be as much as three feet deep, which possibly could cause vehicle damage. A hog track is similar to a deer track except the toes are more rounded and wider in comparison to length. Hog hair is easily distinguished from other mammals and may be found at fence crossings and rubs. Scat appears very much like that of a small calf, being dropped in several small piles, which is very distinct from deer pellets or predator cord-like droppings. Hunting Feral Hogs Although feral hogs are not classified as game animals, a hunting license is required to hunt them. Feral hogs are very intelligent and considered to be challenging quarry. Many hunters consider the long tusks and mean appearance a BIGGAME.ORG genuine trophy, in addition to the quality of meat. They also provide a great off-season challenge and opportunities to hone hunting skills and spend time in the field. There are many hunting techniques used, including stand hunting over a baited area, quite often incidental to white-tailed deer hunting. Stalking or still hunting over baited areas and areas indicating recent hog activity, such as wallows, are commonly used techniques. Corn or milo, often soaked in water and allowed to sour and then buried underground is good bait. Night hunting with a spotlight is often used; however, the local game warden must be notified beforehand. (There are certain laws which prohibit using artificial light where deer are known to range.) Hunting with well-trained dogs is another hunting method utilized and can be very exciting. Because the feral hog has such a tough hide the best rifle calibers to use should be a .243 or greater to prevent wounding and loss of the animal. Bowhunting, muzzleloading, and handguns are also popular among sportsmen to hunt feral hogs. MAY 2015 | 31 MEMBER NEWS DSC Conservation Society Attracts Younger Members The mission of The Conservation Society is to support the mission of DSC by engaging and developing its next generation of leaders. The DSC Conservation Society (formerly known as the Young Professionals’ Group) is comprised of men and women between the ages of 23-45, and is an affiliate arm of DSC – supporting the DSC mission by creating awareness in the younger outdoor community and ultimately developing DSC’s next generation of leaders.
