he first Monthly Meeting of the year brought a packed house
with lots of food and camaraderie amongst likeminded
Porsche lovers. If you didn’t attend this meeting you missed your
opportunity to partake of many Japanese food items at Jasmine
Tokyo in Scottsdale. I have never seen such a great selection.
As of this writing, we have been receiving an encouraging number
of membership renewals for 2014. Hope all of you have renewed
your membership so you did not miss any issues of Going Places.
The Board of Directors has authorized adding additional pages
for club articles,
which will be
in place in the
next couple of
months. Please
send in your
articles. As you
know, they are
due on or before
the 15 of the
month for the
next issue, with
about a six-week
run time (e.g.,

Porsche Motorsports News
We are approaching the running of the 2014 Le Mans 24 hour
endurance race in June. This year Porsche will relive its Le
Mans glory days with brand new LMP1 race cars. Due to the
focus on efficiency in the 2014 season of the World Endurance
Championship, Porsche will feature hybrid technology. With this
in mind, the race engineers are actually facing the same challenge
as their colleagues who work on development of Porsche’s
road cars--how to boost performance while also reducing fuel
consumption.

Since its inauguration in 1923, the legendary Le Mans 24 hour
race attracts more than 200,000 spectators to the French La Sarthe
region every year. More than 133 TV networks broadcast the
race around the world.
Porsche has scored 16 overall wins at Le Mans, achieved by
famous race drivers like Jacky Ickx, Jürgen Barth, Klaus Ludwig,
Henri Pescarolo, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Alexander Wurz, Tom
Kristensen, Michele Alboreto, Allan McNish and Laurent Aiello
for both customer and works teams. Additionally, Porsche
works drivers have earned dozens of class victories in GT2
class, including Marc
Lieb and Mike
Rockenfeller together

Y
ou will probably notice that this issue of Going Places
looks a bit different. There is a very good explanation for
that. We are in our third year as Editor and Creative Director
of Going Places. The computer and software we were using
to create the newsletter each month had been handed down to
us when we took over from our respected predecessor Hugh
Starkey along with the general layout of the newsletter. The
hardware and software both were outdated and becoming
increasingly incompatible with other technology we needed to
work with - such as the company that does the actual printing.
The board approved the acquisition of a new computer and
Adobe software package for the club, which we received just
before the first of the year. The good news is that the computer
and software are both amazing! But because some fonts we used
are no longer part of the InDesign software package, and some
of the presets did not transfer over, we have had to reformat
many pages and change over to different fonts for some things.
However, these changes are positive, and while we make the
additions and learn more about the power and versatility of the
software, we are also working on more consistency with fonts
and font size, titles, and subheadings. It will take a few months,
but hopefully each issue will look better than the last. We may
try out some things and then make changes if they don’t look
the way we want them to. As very sincere volunteers, but not
graphic designers, it may take us a bit to get it right.Thanks for
your patience while we make this transition.
Another decision by our Board of Directors will also have a
positive impact on Going Places: The board has approved a
four-page color insert in the middle of the newsletter. This
will allow us to showcase the wonderful photography of many
of our members. It also opens up the opportunity to sell more
color advertising space to sponsors. If needed and available,
we can also use that space for promoting AZPCA, Zone 8, and
National PCA in a color format. This change will be made with
the April or May issue of GP.
We are looking forward to being able to better showcase the
events, writing, and photography
of our members. Please continue
to share your talents with the
club, or consider starting!

AUTOCROSS RESULTS

Tempe Diablo Stadium
E
arly on a very brisk December morning while it was
still dark, the autocross faithful arrived at Tempe Diablo
Stadium to set up a course. Thanks to Kim for providing a
challenging, safe, and fun course. While the total number
of registered entrants was only 15, we all had a fantastic
day. This autocross saw the return of our lapping format
with a warm-up and three timed flying laps. The event was
low-keyed and relaxing with time to catch up with some
old and new friends that had not been to an autocross this
season. There was plenty of driving time on course with each
participant completing four sessions or 12 timed laps. And
for the first time in recent memory, there were more Porsches
than any other marque! Thanks to Alex Rentzis for taking
some great pictures that are posted on the AZPCA website
under Album View - AutoX #4, and to everyone for pitching
in to make the day a success!

Bondurant Road Course
A
utocross #5 was held on Saturday, January 11 at the Bob
Bondurant School of High Performance Driving Road
Course. This is an excellent facility and the Bondurant staff
was very accommodating as they opened their front office
and shop for us. Weather was typically Arizona -- perfect
with cooler temps, full sun, and a light breeze. We had
50 registered entrants from our club and friends from the
SCCA and Corvette clubs. Kim and Brian Peters designed
and set up an exciting and challenging course that allowed
for higher speeds and more shifting than normally seen on
parking lot courses while focusing on driver and worker
safety. All drivers had the opportunity to complete seven
timed runs. Top Time of Day went to Bruce Hanson in a
modified Shelby Mustang. Thanks to everyone for coming
out and supporting our event!
BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSHEPHILES

The Last Open Road
by BS Levy
The Last Open Road, by BS Levy, published by THINK FAST
INK, Oak Park, IL.
T
his book is the first in a series of novels on the life and
times of Buddy Palumbo, a largely self-taught auto
mechanic with friends/customers involved with sports cars
in the early years of the sports car movement in America.
Written in 1994, this book includes a
realistic portrayal of the sports car racing
scene of the ‘50s and is now in its 8th
printing. In addition to name-dropping a
who’s who of sports car drivers and racing
venues (mostly East Coast), a wide variety
of marques (even Bandini and Siata) get
mentioned in appropriate contexts. Most
of the action involves Allards, Jaguars,
and MGs.
In all the time I have been writing book
reviews for Porsche people, I have never
before reviewed a work of fiction. Though
this book follows a fictional character and
his fictional associates, and is replete with
fictional conversations, the details of the
sports car racing events dealt with are real
and accurate, as are remarks about world
events that are woven into the story. An interesting touch is the number of then-current popular songs, and
their performers, that provide background to the text, as they
provided background to the activities of the protagonists.
Levy writes a very readable story of American life in the
‘50s. He tends toward verbose sentences and long paragraphs, but the action is always fast-paced. There are no
photographs, but his writing is such that it is easy to visualize
the events described. He provides detailed and historically
accurate descriptions of venues and events, overlain by the
actions and conversations of the fictional characters. The
first-person narrative in The Last Open Road, combined with
the vivid descriptions, makes it easy to feel that you are really
there and no longer in your personal everyday real world.
This is true of the whole book, the family, workplace, and
dating episodes, as much as the racing scenes.

Easterners will recognize the names of many of the drivers
and car owners, even some who are camouflaged, such as
the sanctioning body, the Sports Car Motoring Association
(SCMA), which is made to look like a bunch of arrogant,
self-centered, bureaucrats, similar to the SCCA officials this
reviewer used to encounter.
To this reviewer’s best recollection The Last
Open Road accurately presents the exuberance and enthusiasm of sports car racers (and
their support personnel) in the ‘50s and the
unbelievable (by modern standards), laid-back
casualness of the racing events included in the
story. Venues involved include Bridgehampton, Giant’s Despair, Brynfan Tyddyn, Grand
Island (New York State), Elkhart Lake, and The
Glen. The action is so true-to-life that you can
follow the streets raced on, and the bars hopped
to, on today’s Google Maps. Some reference
is made to the sports car activity of the West
Coast, but the author was an Easterner, so he
writes about what he experienced.
Even if you can’t appreciate the historical
antecedents for some of the events described,
or even care about sports car racing per se, Levy makes
the life and times of Buddy Palumbo a captivating read for
anyone. You should read it if only to answer the challenge,
which this reviewer failed, of determining how the title
relates to the story.

to a view of Mr. Levy’s intensive involvement in modern
vintage racing, as well as the entire world of his books, all
of which have sports car racing connotations.

he first PnP of the year was held at Ajo Al’s Mexican
Restaurant in Peoria. The morning started for us with a nice
cool-weather drive to the location. At 7:45 there were 10 hungry
Porsche owners waiting outside their doors. The restaurant
kindly accommodated the club by opening their doors early at
7:50 A.M. Thirty-four members attended including several from
the west side of Phoenix. The seating was such that it encouraged
conversation amongst old and new members. The service was
attentive, the food was very good and the company was great.
People lingered until 10 A.M. PnP is an excellent way to get to
know your club members in a small setting. Hopefully you will
plan to attended our next PnP.

BARTLETT LAKE SUNDAY DRIVE

W
hat could be better than an Arizona 76 degree, cloudless
Sunday morning in January? I’ll tell you...an Arizona
76 degree, cloudless Sunday morning in January with 50 (yes,
50!) beautiful Porsches, 11 Ferraris, 1 Acura NSX, and a Dodge
Viper all pointed for a spirited drive to lovely Bartlett Lake
north of Phoenix.
Sunday Drive leader Rook Younger gathers the troops for the

After a morning meeting at the Coffee Plantation for caffeine
and pastries, Rook Younger and his minions shepherded us in
three separate groups, over a wonderfully twisty drive down to
the lake marina, where we stopped to enjoy the glorious views,
and photo-ops. Thankfully, the local sheriff’s representative
parked on the shoulder did nothing more than admire the stunning

WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS
THE ROAD

A
s the proverbial “where the rubber meets the road” suggests,
the area which the tires contact the road is a critical factor in
how your Porsche handles. An alignment controls how the wheels
are set in relation to the chassis and the proper settings are vital
for the optimal handling of your car. Various adjustments are
available that can improve street or track performance, however
improved track performance often comes with cost of decreased
tire life for daily driving.
Every Porsche leaves the factory aligned to a set of specifications
which provides the best balance of street performance and tire life.
However, as a car ages, the suspension tends to settle as bushings,
springs and ball joints begin to wear out. This normal wear and
tear and even a decreased tire diameter towards the end of a tire’s
life can cause unwanted changes in alignment. Generally, the most
common reason for alignment issues are bent, broken or worn
suspension components, often caused by running over something
so forcefully that an alignment adjuster moves.
A vehicle with an alignment that is out of specification can handle
poorly, pull in one direction or have issues when turning the
steering wheel. Poor alignment may dramatically reduce tire life.
If your Porsche pulls to one side on a flat road (watch out for road
crown), there is unusual tire wear, the steering wheel is harder to
turn in one direction, or you run over something while driving, it
is a good idea to have the alignment checked. It is always a good
idea to have the alignment regularly checked, and particularly
when you have a set of tires installed.
The three major aspects of an alignment are castor, camber and
toe. All three of these work in unison to optimize handling and
performance.
Camber
Camber is the measurement of the angle of the top of the tire
in relation to the bottom of the tire. When you view your
Porsche from the front or rear and see the top of the tires
leaning towards the inside, that is negative camber, which
is very noticeable on most Porsche racecars. Negative
camber lets the tire ‘stand straight up’ while cornering hard.
Generally, the maximum amount of negative camber is about
1.5 degrees depending on model, but this will also result in
your street tires wearing out first on the inside edge.
Toe
Toe is the amount of angle that the tires are pointed away
from (toe out) or towards (toe in) the centerline of the car
as viewed from above. Most 911 models have an over steer
tendency due to the rear wheel drive and weight distribution,
which can be improved with toe-in adjustments that enhance
high-speed stability.
Castor
Castor is the measurement of the angle of the steering pivot on the
front wheels. Castor is responsible for bringing the front wheels
straight when moving. Have you noticed when your car is parked
and the wheel is turned at full lock and the top of the tire leans?
That is castor.
Most alignment shops or Porsche repair facilities will have
the factory recommended alignment specs readily available.
However, track or race car alignment varies by not only
model, but by driver preference and skill level. To get the

most performance out of a tire in a corner
the alignment will need to be aggressive,
sacrificing tire wear. Most track and race
cars will run more than the factory specs
for camber to counteract the tire going
over vertical while in a hard corner. I
have seen people in the past run as much
negative camber as they can allow and
hurt the performance of the car and wear
out the tires prematurely for a street car.
It is always a smart idea to have someone
qualified help tune your cars suspension
for how you use the car.

014 has started off with a bang! Our second annual Zone
8 Weekender was an amazing success, combining a driving
tour, a Concours, and the Zone 8 Awards Banquet in beautiful
Palm Springs. Our host venue was the Omni Rancho Las Palmas
Resort which provided a gorgeous spot for the competing
Porsches, as well as a fun venue for a delicious dinner. Our
emcee for the evening was Mark Shevitz, PCA’s National
Parade Emcee. His warm wit and sharp tongue made for a very
entertaining evening as we distributed awards, appreciation gifts
and door prizes. Mark does a fantastic job with the microphone,
truly turning any club event into an exciting yet family gathering.

Jeff Zwart was the special surprise guest speaker for the evening.
For those of you who don’t know of him, Jeff is famous for both
his photography and film making skills (having made a career out
of producing advertising for Porsche and other large companies)
and for his racing skills (seven time Pike’s Peak Champion, to
name a few accolades). In fact, most interviews with him either
start or end with the interviewer stating something to the effect of
“I want to be Jeff when I grow up.” Believe me, you’d recognize
the Porsche print ads and TV commercials he has produced. In
addition to his delightful story-telling, we were the first to see
a couple of new videos he produced, one on his latest Pike’s
Peak win, and one about his 356 Gmund Coupe (which you’ve

A very important part of the evening is our tradition of recognizing
the best of the best for the year. The 2013 Zone 8 Enthusiast of
the Year, from the Los Angeles Region, is Colleen Stein. Colleen
has only been a member of PCA for three years, yet she jumped
in with both feet and has never looked back. She regularly attends
Concours events around the zone, both as an entrant and a judge.

The zone’s first club race of the year, our California Festival of

to an incredible weekend of racing, the “festival” aspect of
this event will be bigger and better than ever. We will have
even more vendors, a food truck court (better food!), and
of course the Porsche Concours and Corral. Parade laps,
driving simulators, mini-autocross, swap meet, cars for
sale, it will all be back. This year’s timeline will feature the
4 cylinder Porsches along with 928s. (If you want your car

Looking farther down the road, PCA is bringing the Werks
Reunion to the Monterey Historics week. This Porscheonly Concours and Corral will finally give Porsche and
PCA the spotlight they deserve during this annual tradition
of automobile excess. The Werks Reunion will be held
on Friday, the same day as the BMW club’s Legends of
the Autobahn. (I hear that Concorso Italiano is moving to
Saturday, so they will no longer conflict.) Bring your Porsche
and be there; it promises to be a great event! (As if you didn’t
already have enough reasons to go to Monterey in August...)

n Saturday, January 18, the annual PCA Zone 8 Presidents’
Meeting and Awards Banquet was held at the beautiful Omni
Rancho Las Palmas in Rancho Mirage, California (Palm Springs
area). In addition to the annual gathering of region presidents
and a meeting hosted by Don Root from the National PCA for
website reps and newsletter editors, events included a Concours
and presentation of Enthusiast of the Year and Region of the
Year awards.

The first Zone 8 Concours of the year was held in perfect weather
under the palm trees adjacent to the golf course at the Rancho
Las Palmas. At the evening banquet, the always entertaining
Master of Ceremonies Mark Shevitz presided over the festivities.
Guest speaker was Jeff Zwart, well known for his creative
photography that appears on the last page of Panorama magazine.
Jeff recounted his memories of years of performance driving,
automotive photography, and directing commercials and other
marketing productions for various automobile manufacturers.
But he emphasized that the sophisticated camera vehicles used
to create these productions are Porsches!
After presentation of the Concours awards, Tom Brown, Zone 8
Representative, announced the major award winners: Region of
the Year, Golden Empire Region; Enthusiast of the Year, Colleen
Stein, LA Region.
