SHARE . sdBackyard.com is a website and a print publication created for communities in San Diego County with all stories, photos, and content provided solely by community members. In April 2008, 50 communities were launched online; and in June 2008, a print version of sdBackyard.com was launched in Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Scripps Ranch and Poway. In the future, more publications will be distributed throughout county communities. sdBackyard.com is brought to you by the Union-Tribune. WHERE TO PICK UP THE PAPER sdBackyard.com is a free publication, delivered every Friday to subscribers of The San Diego Union-Tribune, and distributed through select Union-Tribune newspaper racks in Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Scripps Ranch and Poway. WHAT IS PUBLISHED s the holidays near, I have seen more and more advertisements about food drives, clothing drives and the need for volunteers. The team at sdBackyard.com and I decided that we wanted to compile a list of non-profits in the area that need items or help for their holiday activities. If you know of a non-profit agency in need of donations, please have the director submit the top five items needed and the deadline for dropping them off, along with locations, on sdBackyard. com. We will print the listings in our special Thanksgiving issue on Nov. 28. We are looking for anything from clothes or food needed to help with wrapping presents, putting together packages or delivering gifts. This is a great opportunity for organizations that haven’t gotten the word out. If you have any photos that could run with the story, please upload those along with captions to help tell your story. Also include contact information for anyone who has questions about the holiday activity. If you have any questions about the project, please contact me at stephanie.parry@ sdBackyard.com. Don’t forget to take photos of your wrapping parties and holiday get-togethers over the holidays and submit them on sdBackyard.com. Have a safe and happy holiday season. Story and photos provided by sdBackyard.com Community Ambassadors Stephanie Parry and Shelley Bailey SHARE Purple Heart recipients attend long-range fishing trip By Sal Brunetto sdBackyard.com member, Scripps Ranch A Page 3 & 10 s a Scripps Ranch resident and business owner of Brunetto Video Services, I was invited to document a long-range fishing trip to thank our military veterans in October. Eight spots specifically for Purple Heart recipients were reserved for this trip. It was organized by Allen Gross in conjunction with the Purple Heart Fund organization and the United States Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton. Gross told us, “For 10 years, I have been the charter-master for a long-range fishing trip aboard the world’s largest and most luxurious long-range sport-fishing boat, the EXCEL. Each and every trip has been amazing and we look forward to our upcoming trip.” Gross went on, “I am doing something to thank our military veterans for the courageous job they’ve done. I have reserved eight spots on the trip specifically for Purple Heart recipients to join myself and 17 friends and family members.” When organizations and people started hearing about what he was about to do, donations graciously started coming in. Gross contacted Brunetto Video Services to videotape and photograph the trip. I said yes without hesitation. What a great idea, not only to invite wounded veterans, but to also document this historic trip. This was the biggest undertaking Brunetto Video Services has attempted and one of the most successful. I shot more than 11 hours of video along with 550 pictures. Each person aboard will receive a fully edited highlight DVD of the trip along with a photo disc that includes all the pictures that were taken aboard. Hearing about the Marines heroic experiences’ serving our country was truly fascinating. These eight Marines and their fellow anglers had an outstanding trip with close to seven tons of fish brought aboard. I believe everyone aboard had a great time along with plenty of fishing. Yelo Red Blue (Magenta (Blackplate) (Cyan (Yellow plate) plate) plate) Brent Koenig of Arizona (putting) was the winner of the putting contest. He received a free twosome of golf at Maderas. Scott Marshall of Escondido and Bill Maher, Jake and Jeb Bakke of Poway, won first place at the tournament. K Go to sdBackyard.com for contest rules. The 4th and 5th grade Meadows class capped their fieldtrip at the San Diego Natural History Museum by joining internationally known artist Robert Wyland with his transformation of an original art piece. Studying the importance of water, the class took a field trip to see the Water H20=Life Exhibit. While there, they ran into Wyland. Known mostly for his marine life murals, Wyland’s work is seen on buildings in several continents including the San Diego National Bank building downtown. Friday was the official grand opening of “Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet” in Balboa Park. Painting in the lobby, Wyland invited the class to help transform the sphere into a beautifully designed globe. Encouraged by the artist, the children placed their handprints and autographs on the work of art. Engaged in his conversation with the children, Wyland remarked, “What a smart group of children.” Wyland asked Mallika Parlikar to paint the title of the work, “Hands Across the Ocean.” “Since you have all worked with me, you are all artists now!” Wyland said. “This is a life changing experience,” commented David Beck, age 9. Wyland donated a copy of his book “Hold Your Water” to the class and then signed the back of each child’s shirt. “This should help pay for college‚“ he joked. Some of Wyland’s pieces are known to sell for nearly $500,000. The Cool Globes San Diego exhibit in Balboa Park is comprised of 40 globes designed by local, national and international artists. The “Hands Across the Ocean” globe will be on display in the museum lobby for the next three weeks. Back by popular demand, Lake Poway has contracted with Chaulk Mound Trout Ranch in Nebraska to ship the finest trout to Southern California. These fish have been dubbed “tail walking” because of their above-water spectacle seen when the fish seemingly walk on water as you reel them in. The fishing frenzy began Nov. 7. The Lake was stocked with 4,000 pounds of rainbow trout. Fifty percent of the stock are trophy-size catches weighing up to 12 lbs. The lake is open from 5:30 a.m. to sunset, Wednesday through Sunday, for fishing and boating. All park areas are open seven days a week from 5:30 a.m. to sunset. Boat rentals, fishing permits, bait and tackle and refreshments are available at the Lake Poway Grill and Tackle. Fishing permits are $6 for adults 16 and older and $3 for youths ages 8 to 15.
