It's a modern misconception to think of Jesus as the ultimate nice guy who only said things that everybody loved to hear. Of course Jesus is the perfect model of charity and compassion, but he also gave some very challenging teachings. Today's Gospel is a case in point. Not many people are thrilled by Christ's lesson today that insists God MUST be first in our lives. Few are those who love to hear this instruction to renounce our beloved things as well as our beloved relationships. But Jesus does not mince words. We are to "hate" our "father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters," and even our own life. PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED Vincent P. Gazzo Victor M. Maldonado BAPTISMS It's important to understand that the use of the word "hate" here does not mean to despise anyone or treat them unkindly. It means rather to prefer something--or Someone-else, namely, God, to these important relationships. Taken in the context of the Gospel as a whole it is clear that Jesus is not advocating cruelty or animosity. On the contrary, just a few weeks ago we heard from Luke 10:27 as Jesus instructed us to love our neighbors as ourselves. However, in putting God first, inevitably something else must take second place. It is a kind of hatred of family, self, and "stuff" when we don't allow these things to become mini-gods in our lives. Instead, we keep God as God. It means not allowing a family member to prevent us from practicing our faith to the fullest, and also not putting our trust in gadgets and gizmos. It means, instead, putting all our trust in God, whatever the cost may be. -3- Pastor’s Pen By Cindy Wooden Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Francis will declare Blessed Teresa of Kolkata a saint at the Vatican Sept. 4. Mother Teresa was widely known as a living saint as she ministered to the sick and the dying in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the world. Although some people criticized her for not also challenging the injustices that kept so many people so poor and abandoned, her simple service touched the hearts of millions of people of all faiths. Born to an ethnic Albanian family in Skopje, in what is now part of Macedonia, she went to India in 1929 as a Sister of Loreto and became an Indian citizen in 1947. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. Shortly after she died in 1997, St. John Paul II waived the usual five-year waiting period and allowed the opening of the process to declare her sainthood. She was beatified in 2003. After her beatification, Missionary of Charity Father Brian Kolodiejchuk, the postulator of her sainthood cause, published a book of her letters, “Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light.” The letters illustrated how, for decades, she experienced what is described as a “dark night of the soul” in Christian spirituality; she felt that God had abandoned her. While the letters shocked some people, others saw them as proof of her steadfast faith in God, which was not based on feelings or signs that he was with her. The date chosen for her canonization is the eve of the 19th anniversary of her death and the date previously established at the Vatican for the conclusion of the Year of Mercy pilgrimage of people like her who are engaged in works of mercy. In her own words. . . “Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at His disposition, and listening to His voice in the depth of our hearts.” “Life is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is beauty, admire it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it. Life is a game, play it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is sorrow, overcome it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is a tragedy, confront it. Life is an adventure, dare it. Life is luck, make it. Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it.” “Live simply so others may simply live.” “I know God won’t give me anything I can’t handle. I just wish he didn’t trust me so much.” “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” “God doesn’t require us to succeed, he only requires that you try.” -4- Sacrificial Giving 2016 2015 Did We Take a Step? August 28th, 2016 August 30th, 2015 Decrease $17,872.06 $19,052.77 ($1,180.71) In the Gospel today, Jesus warns us not to give in hopes of repayment, but to give open-handedly to the poor and needy. That sort of giving mirrors the bountiful giving of God, and Jesus assures us it is blessed indeed! Friends of Sr. Eileen Catholic University Friends of Sr. Eileen would like you to support Our Beloved Sister Eileen Christie by making a donation and helping spread the word SECOND COLLECTION All Masses September 11 The Catholic University of America Collection The Catholic University of America, located in Washington D.C., is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States. CUA offers students an excellent education in a faith-filled atmosphere that is grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition. Please help us to find Sister Eileen and bring her home! Our beloved Sister Eileen Christie has now been missing for more than 42 days. While the Austrian Police have been diligently searching the area, focusing on Lake Hallstatt, to determine whether she may have been lost during one of her daily swims, we would like to retain a private investigator to explore alternative possibilities. So, we are creating this GoFundMe site to raise $25,000 to fund the independent investigation. We have identified an excellent Austrian firm, Professional Risk Management, who has a local investigator ready to begin work. Some of our own diocesan priests have received education there and have specialized in different ecclesiastical courses and are now serving our Diocese. The weekend of September 10th and 11th the National Collection for The Catholic University of America. Every dollar given directly supports aid for students from dioceses across the country, including our diocese. Please be generous. Any funds raised that are not used for the investigation will be donated to Eileen's Order, Sisters of St. Joseph. What is GoFundMe? GoFundMe is a personal fundraising website that has helped thousands of people raise millions of dollars for the things that matter to them most.
