BELTON W.I. DIAMOND JUBILEE
O
n April 23rd the JGI was packed to the rafters with
Belton W.I. Members waiting to celebrate their
Diamond Jubilee. 60 years ago in April 1955 a group of
ladies started the Belton W.I. and we were extremely lucky
to have a founder member at this occasion, Mrs Evelyn
McLintock, who was our Guest of Honour and received a
bouquet of flowers from our Vice President Sue Richmond. The president Mrs Barbara Clark greeted our guests
including the Norfolk Federation Chairman Mrs Wendy
Adams and Secretary Mrs Cindy Brooks, two W.I. Advisers
and friends from Bradwell and Gorleston W.I. Groups.
Barbara spoke about how our W.I. has grown over the
years “we still do our Jam and sewing etc”., but we also go
bowling, play darts and quiz together. At the present time
we have 47 members in the Belton W.I.
The Norfolk Chairman said a few words as did the Secretary
and then we sat down to our buffet.

During this part of the evening we Skyped two of our members Nora
and Terry, who were unable to attend as they were on holiday in Cyprus
just to let them know what lovely time they were missing.
There was a beautiful celebration cake made and decorated by
member Mrs Carole Mahon which was cut and everyone had a piece
in celebration of the event. Every person had a decorated souvenir bag
with sugared almonds which were made by our craft group and the hall
was decorated beautifully.
The evening was then handed over to Patsy Rose who entertained
everyone and got them up singing and dancing. Grateful thanks go to
the W.I. committee for organising the evening, a good time was had by
everyone who attended. Heres to 60 more successful years.!!!

PAUL COOKSON VISITS MOORLANDS

n May 7th million-selling poet Paul Cookson came to Moorlands
O
Primary Academy and entertained the school with an hour of his
wonderful poems and songs. He then spent the rest of the day leading
poetry workshops with children before selling and signing copies of his
books at the end of the day.
Grace in Year Four said “I thought he was really entertaining. I went
home and wrote some poems of my own.” Romy, also in Year Four
added, “He was brilliant. I laughed for a whole hour. He then gave me
some wonderful ideas for helping to make my poems better.” Mr Biddle
said “I was delighted to see how much the children enjoyed working
with Paul. It’s great that he has inspired so many children to read and
write poetry.”
Paul will be returning for a follow-up session with children and the
parents on the evening of Wednesday 20th May. Headteacher, Mr
Lee said “We are very serious about our children developing a love of
reading and writing, not just to help them in school, but also for their
future lives. Inspiring Author visits such as this are one way to help this
to happen.”
NEPAL FUNDRAISING AT MOORLANDS
children of Moorlands have been deeply moved by the tragic

and ongoing situation in Nepal, so much so that they
decided to raise as much money as possible to help the people of
the region who have lost everything.
Layla-May, Maddison and Isobel in Year 4 have been instrumental in
the school raising over £250 for the victims of the Nepal earthquake.
After watching the footage on the news, the girls felt as if they had to
act. Layla-May said “I felt sorry for them because they have no shelter.”
Maddison added “They have hardly any food and it is freezing cold. I
wanted to help them.” Isobel said “I want to make the people of Nepal a
little bit happier and make my school proud.”
GARAGE SERVICES
The girls organised a non-uniform day for the staff and pupils, with
everyone making a donation to the fund. One child from Year 3 was so
touched by what she had seen and heard that she independently raised
over £40. There are plans to follow-up the event with further fundraising
over the next few weeks, including a ‘Name the Sloth’ competition.

Deputy Head John Siddles said “We place huge value on our school’s six
core values. One of these is Compassion and I think the children have
demonstrated that they have a good understanding of this from the

is rather earlier than usual, on Sunday June 28th, at the John Green
Institute, Belton, and entry is open to all residents of Belton, Browston,
Burgh Castle, Fritton and St. Olaves and members of any clubs based in
that area, we welcome those of you who have not entered previously
as well as the younger members of the community. The fee is only 50p
per class (maximum £3.00) and 20p for young people (maximum 50p).
Bring your entries to the hall on Sunday morning (9.30 – 11.30), or if
you cannot make that time please ring 01493 780776 and we will make
alternative arrangements to get your entries collected from you.
There are sections for flowers, plants and vegetables, home baking
and preserves, home made wine, art, craft and photography as
well as the children’s and young peoples age groups. Schedules
have been delivered to all local homes, however extra copies are
available at Belton Pet and Hardware, Burgh Castle Post Office, and
the JGI or they can be downloaded from the local web site at www.
beltonandbrowston.com .
After judging the hall will be open for viewing from 2.30pm with cups
and trophies presented by our special guest from 4.00pm.

complete by mid July some overnight works and closures will be
needed in August and there is only a provisional date of November
2015 for the new link road to be ready and open as the last stages of
the works are yet to be scheduled.

in too. For some, it might
have been the end-of-season

fanatical friends or family
about their football teams.
For young people it might be
hearing Mum ask them to tidy
their room or not to kick of
their shoes just as they come
in through the door!

friendly people who don’t judge you because of your weight”
which is a vital part of the group as each and every member in
that room knows how much courage it takes to walk through
the doors.

As I write this, the country
of Nepal, one of the poorest
in the world, has suffered a
second major earthquake,
with
landslips
covering
villages in the outlying villages
around Kathmandu and the
Himalayas. With thousands
killed, millions in need of aid
and assistance and so much
destruction and devastation,
it is unimaginable to think
about how those people are
feeling about life. Children
who were just beginning to
cope with their fears after the
first earthquake, struggling
big time after the second. Aid
agencies finding it difficult to
distribute aid because of the
lack of support structures.
But what of a creeping
acceptance or weariness of
hearing about the poor and
needy in our country; people
in need in our village. In the
course of electioneering,
some of the political parties
made great emphasis on
the needy, the provision
of foodbanks, etc. and the
hardships faced by many who
experience changes to their
benefit arrangements.
As people in Belton, Browston,
Burgh Castle, Fritton and St
Olaves, let us be members
of communities that care for
one another; not tired by
hearing of others suffering,
but people with energy to
respond and do something
positive to change the lives of
people in need.

ARCHIES VAN
DOWN THE GARDEN PATH

few thoughts on taking part in our

village show on Sunday 28th June.
If you are taking part, for the first time,

Bedford Viva van, Archie’s mate Jimmy
had found the van an engine which cost
£3, Jimmy had a friend who completely
reconditioned the souped up engine and
after running it in the little Viva van could do nearly 110 MPH,
after a re-spray, yellow front and green rear, it had the look of a
stock car.

should be fun and it is exciting to see if you get a first, second, or
third prize and if not then think it must be the judges fault not
yours. And at the end of the day, sadly there is not a world cruise
to be won, maybe a certificate and for the few a trophy. There is,
however, the satisfaction of having taken part and pride when
showing ones friends and family the efforts of all your hard work
so why not give it a try.
One day, as Archie and Annie were rolling along the A143 there
was a loud bang, the dynamo pulley had blown apart and their
pride and joy started to boil over, they pulled up by the Duke of
Marlborough and Archie went in to see if they could phone his
dad, however mum Violet answered the phone and her reply was
a definite “No” as dad was to take her and some other church
ladies to a concert at Bury cathedral, “dad cannot possibly be of
any assistance to you so you can just lay on your own bed as you
have made it” Violet had told Archie many times that he should
go out with Roy’s daughter and forget the Jewish girl from Bury,
to this day Archie could not understand the way Violet thought.
Anyway after Violets outburst Archie asked Annie for her tights,
cut off a leg with his penknife and created a belt from the engines

Here are a few simple guidelines for beginners in the vegetable
section. Firstly, read the schedule carefully and decide what you

variety of vegetable that you are exhibiting. Tips for Beetroot:
One week before the show, water every other day with a solution
of one tablespoon of salt to 2 gallons of water. This should ensure
that when the beetroot is cut it will show a deep red flesh. Tie
the tops tightly with raffia 3 inches from the bulb, trimming off
the excess. Do not take off the tap root. Pea pods: Choose pods
that have roughly the same number of peas and no blemishes.
Cut them leaving a long stalk. Don’t let the peas rub against
each other! Carrots: Some dedicated serious show growers
will go to extraordinary lengths when growing long carrots for
shows but remember we have grown for a village show so three
clean carrots (not scrubbed) with the tops off, will be fine. The
cucumber needs to be as long and straight as possible. Spring
onions should be of equal size clean and tied in the middle.
Radishes should be 1 – 2” in diameter, fresh, crisp and uniform
of colour and smooth. There is such a wide choice of lettuce
varieties that it will be difficult for the judge to decide just make
sure yours is clean and slug free! Tomatoes: Pick mature but firm
fruit, remove stems, they should be of even size and blemish free
with no cracks or green tops. Clean with a soft cloth and don’t
forget a small card showing the variety.

Browston Parish Council
attended the second April
Council meeting along with
County Councillor Colin Aldred
and two members of the public,
John Rudrum was in the chair. A
Burgh Castle resident asked the
chair and vice-chair about their
interest in becoming members
of Burgh Castle Parish Council,
their reply was that they felt
they would like to see the two
councils working more closely
in the future and felt that their
experience might also be of
benefit.
The Greater Yarmouth Tourism
Bid team have replied to an
earlier letter from the council
stating that any objections
to the New Road Sports Field
coming under the scheme, (
it has been billed through the
Parish Council for £175.00),
would need to be raised
through the valuation officer
at Great Yarmouth Borough
Council. In the time since the
original objection was raised
the council had used this course
of objection but was awaiting a
response.
The Contractors have updated
the time-scale for the A12 / A143
link road, whilst most work on
the roundabout area will be
complete by mid July some
overnight works and closures
will be needed in August and
there is only a provisional date
of November 2015 for the new
link road to be ready and open
as the last stages of the works
are yet to be scheduled.
Members agreed to a formal
letter of complaint to the
Borough
Council
Works
Department over the state of
verges where weed killing and
spraying has been used in an
attempt to reduce the amount
of grass strimming required
during the summer. The council
had been advised that various
objections had been received
from other areas in the borough
where the scheme was also
being trialled and agreed to add
their own complaint to the list.
Members
approved
the
accounts for 2014/15 and agreed
all the financial governance
questions answers, the accounts
will now go out for full external
audit.
It was reported that £800.00 of
Councillor Mark Thompson’s
Borough Council ward budget
remained unspent, this was
because he had been advised,
incorrectly, that money could
not be allocated towards the
SAM2 anti speeding units, as
the financial year is now over
there is nothing that can be
done to rectify this, Councillor
Thompson’s other money had
gone to the 1st Belton Scouts
and the borough dog wardens
scheme.
The only planning mater was
approval, by the Borough
Council of extensions at 40
Paddock Close, Belton.
With elections due on May 7th
members had earlier agreed
to cancel the council meeting
due on May 5th and hold the
Annual Parish Council meeting
on Tuesday May 19th.

of an administrator to organise
journey bookings and most
groups are still being run by the
same teams as for many years.
The Rev Rosie Bunn reported on
success in numbers of the church
and its youth groups however
she reported that it was difficult
to meet the sum required by the
diocese to support the running
of the church, Belton had not met
their target for the last year and
the demand was likely to increase
by a further 15% each year.
Richard Utting reported on the
success of the letting of the Belton
Poor lands and the donations
paid out annually and Barbara
Clark reported on the W.I and
their recent diamond jubilee
celebrations whilst Norma Hadden
reported on a thriving over
50/60’s club whilst Belton Charity
Fundraisers reported another very
successful year with £2500.00
awarded to local clubs groups and
causes. Adie Simm, the Chairman
or Bohemians Football Club, gave
a report outlining the success of
the charter club which now has 16
teams at junior , adult and ladies
levels all but two (due to lack of
space) playing on the New Road
Field. Various other reports had
been handed in and will form part
of the councils records
Although not present to collect his
award due to work commitments,
it was confirmed that the Citizen
of the Year certificate would go
to Dave Ely for his work with
Belton Scouts, Bohemians F.C.
and The Quidenham Hospice, the
certificate will be presented to
him in the next few weeks.
Browston Parish Council and it is
the councils legal responsibility

he Belton and Browston Annual
Parish Meeting at the end of
April was not well supported with
attendance less than in recent
years to hear reports from across
the parish for the last year. The
Parish Council Chairman, John
Rudrum, thanked councillors,
council staff along with Borough
and County Councillors for their
work, help and assistance and
reported another busy year.
Councillor Rudrum reported on
the ups and downs of the Bell
Lane project where vandalism had
put a temporary stop to progress
however he reported the success
of the dog warden scheme
and thanked the community
gardeners for their excellent work
with the flower beds, his report
said that the New Road Sport and
Leisure Centre was holding its own
although more regular bookings
are required, he stated that there
are six names on the waiting list
for allotments and that the council
continues to support groups in
the village including a donation to
the village food bank.
Councillor Rudrum also reported
success in applying for the SAM2
anti speeding signs with a 50%
grant from the County Councils

two are in the process of being
purchased for various locations in
the parish.
The report on the Councils
finances was given by Councillor
Swan, he stated that allowing
for items in progress it was a
very level year, income and
expenditure would be almost the
same however he did point out
that having to set a budget for a
whole year six months before it
started was a difficult operation
and that although the parish had
not felt the effect of Borough
Council finance cutbacks these
would certainly come in the next
few years but there were some
funds in reserve for this.

Great Yarmouth for the first
time. Mind you they are very
sporadic services, nowhere
near a full timetable.
Service 71 has two trips into
Great Yarmouth Market Gates,
the first runs from Wroxham
at 0815 hours via Hemsby,
Newport, Scratby, California
and Caister. ; The second runs
from Hemsby at 1120 hours
over the same route to Great
Yarmouth. The return trips
leave Market Gates at 1035
hours to Hemsby and 1335
hours to Wroxham. Service 71
replaces Anglian Service 63
which has been withdrawn.
Service 72 again has two trips
per day each way between
Great Yarmouth Market Gates
and South Walsham via Acle.
This is really an extension of
Service 52 which connects
Eaton in Norwich to Blofield
Heath. Again this is not a
comprehensive service and
ENTUA would like to see this
service run on an hourly basis

Belton players conclude pre-season training

another pre-season, warm-up,
friendly match. After holding
the host to 208 from their 40
overs with Gavin Moar taking 2
for 49 for the visitors, the Belton
run chase just fell short of a
morale boosting victory. Wayne
Goreham (53) and Chris Cropley
(53) led the way and support was
garnered from Adam Savoury
(28) and Alec Toll (24). Belton
finished just 7 runs short on 201
from a full 40 overs.
The Norfolk Cricket League
season began as Belton took
maximum points from their
season opener against Rollesby
on a glorious May afternoon
at Southtown Common. Chris
Cropley continued in form with
a solid contribution of 51 and
Captain, Sajid Ali, chipped in
with 59 as the home side scored
222 for 8 from the full 45 overs.
Cameron Nichols hit a quick 43 to
propel Belton to this challenging
total. In reply, Rollesby found
the going quite tough until B
Youngs arrived at the crease
with Rollesby on 42 for 7. His
total of 85 runs threatened to
dent the Belton bubble and in
concert with A Brooks (27) and
D Cook (29) they took the score
to a respectable 181 before the
Belton bowlers did get them out.

bowling attack.
Belton hosted Blundeston on
May 9th in a match reduced
to 30 overs to take account of
some or another football match.
Blundeston took advantage of
some average Belton bowling
and fielding to post an impressive
total of over 200. In reply Belton
were never up with the rate and
lost wickets regularly finishing a
long way back on just over 100.

200 runs for the second time in

LOCAL BUSINESS CELEBRATES 10 YEARS
og training business ‘Pooch Paws’ celebrates 10 years in
D
business this year. Owner, Katey Aldred, started the business
due to her love of animals and her passion to show that animals
can be trained by scientific methods that are more successful
than old fashioned ones. After 12 years of working in the animal
industry, as a veterinary nurse and studying for a degree in
Canine Behaviour and Training, Katey took the plunge to become
self employed and has never looked back.
Katey states that ‘although the economy has been up and down
in the ten years that I started my business, England is a nation
of animal lovers and animals often need training. This can range
from teaching a puppy to sit, to rehabilitating an aggressive dog,
or a horse to load into the trailer. Making photo frames
On the challenges of running a business Katey believes that
being prepared for long days and willing to learn new skills are
key to keeping a successful business going. She says ‘ When I
started I thought it was just about using my skills to train animals,
that is only half of it. After a long day dog training there are
other areas of the business from bookkeeping, to ensuring that
my marketing is up to date’. These long days have not deterred
Katey, she still has passion for her work and hopes to employ
staff as the business progresses.
Katey always ensures that Pooch Paws is offering services that
are up to date with the latest methods, she believes this keeps
customers coming back and also referring their friends, as well
as Veterinary recommendations, she has proved this point by
completing the rigorous requirements to become a certified
instructor in Behaviour Adjustment Training (BAT). She is the only
Certified Behaviour Adjustment Training Instructor (CBATI) in the
East of England and is proud of this.

1ST BELTON
SCOUTS
Beavers The Beavers have had a busy
month planting seeds ready
for the Rectory Corner flower
beds, French Marigolds and
Livingstone Daisy’s, they are in
in Gov’s green house at present,
they have also planted seed
potatoes in the raised bed
at scout hq. This is all part of
their gardening activity badge.
Helper of the week has started
taking photo’s each week as
part of the badge work.
The group have also started
work on their entries for the
Belton and District Show at
the end of June and made
sandwiches, either ham, cheese
or jam.
Cubs The 1st. Belton Cub Scouts
started off the spring term
learning about what a hazard
is and then they searched for
hazards around the scout HQ.
We learned basic first aid, how
to put people in the recovery
position and how to deal with
a potential situation where
someone was ill and what we
could do to help as well as what
to do if you have a nose bleed
and how to treat a burn.
We then had a great evening at
Halfords, learning how to look
after our cycles and how to
change and repair a puncture,
we learnt how to check our
bikes via the M method check,
and also learnt how to tighten
our brakes up and put our seat
up and down depending on our
size.
We have learnt about each
others hobbies to gain our
hobbies badge, each young
person brought some props
and a little speech about their
hobby that they participate in,
these ranged from dancing, to
motor cross, to computers and
everything else in between.
At the last meeting we learnt
about the country code and how
this effects our surroundings,
we went on to the common and
walked round to see if the rules
we had discussed had been
broken there as well as looking
at wildlife. We then had a group
activity which we did in sixes,
the challenge was to collect
material to build a birds nest,
we collected sticks, moss, dead
fern and bark etc. and built the
birds nest at the hut, the cubs
and leaders were astonished
how difficult it was to do and
then we reflected on how hard
it is and long it must take a bird
to build one suitable to live in
and keep eggs safe.

Belton Church hosted a
Fairtrade Tea Party with the aim
of widening awareness of the
benefits of fair trade. Every day
in Britain, we drink 165 million
cups of tea, and only 8% of
those are made from fairtrade
tea. Fairtrade means that the
people who grow and produce
our tea, coffee, chocolate and
sugar (among other things)
are given a premium for their
goods, which allows them
to afford a better standard
of living. It often translates
in supermarkets to a price
difference of a few pence when
compared to other brands, or in
many cases, no price difference
at all! Making the choice to buy
fairtrade products means that
families in some of the poorest
nations in the world can afford
to send their children to school,
can access better healthcare,
and can develop better
communities.
Scouts At the beginning of May six
Scouts from Belton went to
Woodbastwick to camp for the
weekend as part of Badger’s
training for a camp permit.
The weather was kind to us on
the Saturday and we were able
to do some water activities
as well as making a monkey
bridge and do some camp
craft. The Sunday was slightly
wetter but we were able to see
all the different forms of small
portable stoves and ways to
cook when hiking. When the
rain stopped and the sun came
out,

At the tea party, Vivienne
Ridpath showed a video
produced by the Fairtrade
Foundation which showed
the difference the fair trade
premium had made in the
lives of tea growers in Malawi.
Fairtrade tea and coffee was
served, as well as a delicious
array of cakes and biscuits. Many
of these had been made using
Fairtrade sugar and fruit, and
Belton Church is striving to use
Fairtrade products wherever
possible. There were activities
for the children, and a raffle of
some beautiful Fairtrade roses
and some Fairtrade wine and
chocolate.
Fairtrade products can be found
in most major supermarkets,
and many were keen to
support this event. The Co-op,
Sansbury’s and Morrison’s were
especially generous in their
donations of Fairtrade items.
The Bible says that God wants
us to ‘act justly, love mercy, and
walk humbly’ with Him. Even for
those who wouldn’t consider
themselves Christians, it’s hard
to argue with the idea of global
justice and mercy for those less

Ian Prettyman entertained with
songs and stories from Norfolk
and Suffolk and brought back
memories for many of the time
when Burgh Castle was itself a

were served, Mardle indulged,
old acquaintances renewed
and vital funds raised for
our continuing Restoration
Programme.

any way for a delightful evening,
after expenses £307 was made
for the restoration fund.
We look forward to our event
on 24th May when Trevor Austin
will “Reminisce” and afternoon
tea will be enjoyed. The Craft
Fair will again be held in the

but it was questioned if the Burgh
Castle sewage left the village that
way or if the problem originated
from the Belton camp sites, as it
is thought to be the camps where

high for all of our young
at the moment- exam
time is upon us! The youth group
has been taking time to just relax
with each other and look at the
fact that regardless how the
exams go, God still loves them.
Year sixes will soon have finished
their SATs, which they have been
working very hard towards for
several weeks now.
Projection have had their first
singing workshop, and it was
both funny and cringeworthy
when we listened to a recorded
rendition of our latest songthere is a long way to go before
we release an album or win the
X-Factor! But it is wonderful that
young people are willing to get
together to sing and play their
instruments, and we know that
God honours whatever we bring
him, during rehearsals as well as
when we are leading worship in
church (which we are doing at
Cafe Church again this weekend!)
At the end of May, a group of
young people from Cornerstone
are going to a camping trip
called ‘Intents’ (get it?!) which is
being run by Urban Saints and
the Fountain Network- it looks
like it’s going to be a fun, if tiring

weekend, with a water fight and
survival skills workshop part of
the itinerary in between talks
about ‘God’s iPod’ and a chance
to ask Bishop Graham anything!

motorbike gear- but it turned
out that, like David when he was
given King Saul’s armour to wear,
it was far too cumbersome. We
learned that God can offer even
better protection against the
Giants in our lives. In July we are
hoping to hold Messy Church in
the Bell Lane park as we learn
about how God helped a girl
called Esther save her people
when she was in a dangerous
situation!
The Hub and Cornerstone
continue to be a popular choice
for young people looking to
spend time chilling out with
their friends, and over previous
weeks we have had great fun
decorating biscuits, playing
twister and building things out
of Jenga blocks.
Youth group are off for a social
at Quasar tomorrow night and
will be ending the term ‘tubing’
(hopefully!), so there is a lot to
look forward to - and as ever
everyone involved in our work
with children and young people
is excited about what we have
planned. We believe that God
loves each and every one of us,
regardless of what we’ve done
wrong, and we continue to hope
that the children and young
people experience something of
that love as we work with them!
Rock Solid has some exciting
things planned for the second
half of term including tie dye
and crafts for the village showwatch this space! We have also
been growing giant sunflowers
and tomatoes which have been
thoroughly enjoying the warm
sunny weather of the last few
days. We’ve been looking at the
stories Jesus told and asking
ourselves, what would we build
our house on? How would we
treat our wayward brother who
came home after wasting all
our parents’ money? and other
interesting questions!

MEMORIES OF V.E. DAY AT BURGH CASTLE.

fine season was brought to a close with
an unexpected 3 points against league
and double cup winners Catfield. Due to the
game taking place midweek and with players
struggling to get to Ormesby in time for a 6:30
kick off, Catfield elected to call off and thus
Belton took the points. So we finished second in the league and
runners up in both cup competitions, only losing out to Catfield,
a huge achievement for our young and talented squad!
some of the soldiers came asking if anyone had any spare saucepans
as they had nothing to cook in. In true wartime spirit surplus items
were freely handed over.
Every night there was a mass exodus of “sleepers” from town as it
was considered safer in the country. Early in the war children from
secondary schools in Yarmouth and Lowestoft were evacuated to
Nottinghamshire. My eldest cousin, Vera went to Worksop with
Lowestoft Grammar School (we were then in East Suffolk) but then
strangely, later in the war whilst those children were still away
children from London came here so families with their own children
evacuated then took in other evacuees! However, here at Burgh
Castle we children were aware of a war, most of our fathers were
away in the forces, but were not really greatly affected by it. But
on starting school I have one abiding memory of absolutely hating
having to take my gas mask and the practice drill of putting it on.
One day a parachutist came down on the green next to Coronation
Terrace, that was so exciting for us children. I can’t remember what
happened to the parachutist, if we even saw him, but do remember
that lovely parachute silk.
In other news, we are hoping that soon we will know our fate for
next season. We have applied to join the Anglian Combination
league and should be able to report on the decision for the
next Village Voice.
Over the summer the club will look to build local links with
sponsors and also continue to develop the club website.
We will look to start pre season training next month and
will hopefully be able to attract more local talent to our club
however the players will now enjoy a well earned break after
the efforts of this season. The club is looking at planning a
camping trip and arranging some fishing sessions for the
players and families.
Then suddenly one day in 1945 everyone was so happy – peace in
Europe had been declared. Our kitchen was a buzz of activity. My
mother, in a change to her usual morning routine of household
chores was busy making dozens of red, white and blue rosettes.
We children were fascinated, why are you making those, what are
they, who are they for, can we help? I never knew where she got
the material/ribbon from, but I do remember her big “rag bag” was
on the table. Probably the remnants of a pre-war dress, my hand me
down skirt or little brothers rompers!

What excitement!
There was a party for all the village children on the field opposite The
Laurels on High Road. It appears to have been organised by “Burgh
Castle United Services Association”, probably connected with “The
Welcome Home Fund” which was later responsible for the acquisition
of the Playing Field. There were all sorts of sports, for the various age
groups, 5 - 7 yrs, 8 - 10 yrs, 11 - 13 yrs, 14 - 16 yrs.

The races were - flat, slow cycle, sack, 3 legged, wheelbarrow and
hop, skip & jump. We then had tea in the “Maycrete Hut” which had
been designated as a Rest Centre during the war.
My father must have been involved in some way with the organisation
(secretary or treasurer) as I have the actual accounts, which make
interesting reading. Everything was paid for by generous donations
from leading villagers, amounting to £22. 9s 6d. The food cost £13.
13s 3d and the prizes for the sports £8. 13s 0d.
Sadly my friend Shirley couldn’t come because she was in hospital
in London. She was given a doll dressed in red, white and blue,
duly delivered by her eldest sister, in the ATS. Oh, how happy we all
were and I would not have to take that horrible gas mask to school
anymore!!

lthough it’s several weeks
A
since polling day, I want
to use this month’s column to
thank residents throughout the
Lothingland villages for putting
their trust in me to represent
their interests in Parliament for
another five years. Across the
Great Yarmouth constituency,
residents backed my plan to
make our area an even better
place in which to live and work.
The election leaflets, may already
be long-forgotten for some
readers, having disappeared
in our recycling bins, but I am
already working on delivering
the priorities I set out during
the campaign. We need extra
investment to improve local
infrastructure, including our
road network and other facilities.
We need to provide more new
homes for people wanting to
get on the housing ladder, at a
price they can afford. We need
more training opportunities
and new apprenticeships, so
our young people have the
best chance in the job market.
And now David Cameron has
asked me to continue as a
Government minister, I will
continue to ensure that I work
at the heart of government to
get the best deal for our area.
Additionally, we need our local
council to think again about
the closure of vital public toilets
and the harm excessive parking
charges are having on our town
centre. We need the council
to stop wasting money on
unnecessary bureaucracy and to
put an end to the neglect of our
neighbourhoods. As I write these
words, it is unclear who will be
running our local council, but I am
hopeful that a new Conservativeadministration, and our excellent
new local councillor, Brian Lawn,
will start to tackle all of these
local issues. Likewise, Parliament
is yet to return, and the details
of what a new Conservativemajority government will follow
by delivering our manifesto.
However, I look forward in future
issues of keeping you up-todate with what’s happening in
Westminister.

ADRIAN’S BOROUGH UPDATE
would to start this months column by thanking all of those
IAlthough
in Lothingland who put their faith and thus vote in UKIP. on the surface the results seemed disappointing, we
did come second in 12 out of 13 seats. We polled more votes
than Labour in the council elections and were only 1400 shy of
second for the parliamentary vote. After only two years it is clear
that UKIP is now becoming the alternative party of political
choice in Great Yarmouth to the Conservatives and Labour, this
after only two years, a fantastic achievement. I understand that
labour are seeking a coalition with the conservatives, whether
they are successful we will have to wait and see. UKIP will not
enter into any coalitions. We will however be willing to work with
any party on mutually accepted aims that are for the good of the
electorate of Great Yarmouth. It is the electorate who we answer
to, not party politics. I am looking forward to another year where
I can support all the residents of Lothingland to the best of my
ability.

led by Jackie Cole, a big

MALCOLMS NATURE JOTTINGS
I
observed my first pair of Swallows on April 13th. in the village of
Barford west of Norwich, and my first Swifts flying over Gorleston
High Street on May 5th. At the time of writing I have yet to hear or
see a Cuckoo. Malcolms Nature Notes
On May 1st going into my back garden something caught my eye
on a fence, a very small black and white Zebra Spider (Salticus
scenticus). This species is one of the jumping spiders which can leap
100 mm. they don’t build webs, but
the females create a silk cocoon to
protect their eggs and guard the
nest. Males are 6 mm., females 7
mm. They have exceptionally acute
vision, with eight eyes. two of which
are very large, and are capable of
more degrees than our own and
Zebra Spider
are able to move backwards and
forwards for focusing, their other
six smaller eyes cannot move, but
can give the Spider a 360 degree field of view of their environment
without moving their heads. If these eyes get dirty the spider will
clean them carefully with a palp. Spiders have two palps situated
in front of the head composed of six segments namely the Coxa,
Trochanter, Femure Patella, Tibia and Tarsus.
STEPSHORT PUMPING STATION
he Stepshort, Belton, pumping station on the boundary of Belton
Teffluent
and Burgh Castle overflowed on Bank Holiday Monday allowing
to discharge into the adjacent Stepshort dyke. Late in the
afternoon three vans from Anglian Water and a large tanker were
on site pumping the waste away - a situation that occurs regularly
especially at busy holiday times due to the number of camp sites in
the village, however every time a planning application is put in for
more units on the various holiday parks the reply from Anglian Water
is that there is sufficient sewage capacity to cope with the increased
flow.
Zebra Spider
My good friend Lennie Soards of Gorleston rang asking me would I
like a trip out to the wood in Barnby. We have visited this delightful
and interesting spot many times however our visit this time was
cut short by heavy rain showers,
but not before we discovered a
huge fungi the Dryads Saddle,
(Polyporus squamosus) also named
Pheasants Back, like the pattern of
colours on a Pheasants back. This
was the largest I have ever seen of
this species, which I photographed.

It is important in the woodland
ecosystem by decomposing wood,
although edible when young it is
scarcely worth bothering about as its more or less tasteless. Trevor Greenacre, chair of Burgh Castle Parish Council spoke to the
workmen and they stated that “ it appears that the pumps failed
due to the number of nappies and other unsuitable materials. that
had been flushed away. Because of the recent dry spell the material
had compacted then rain in the early hours of Monday had filled
the sewers causing the debris to float and then block the pumps.
Councillor Greenacre went on to say “Can some pressure be put on
Anglian Water to educate Holiday Camps in the use of bathroom
facilities. Maybe a levy for the cost every time there is a problem,
enforced macerators on bathroom fittings for the camps and a stiff
fine for Anglian Water every time it happens.” DEFRA were made
aware of the situation and samples were seen to be being taken
from the dyke by specialist contractors during the following days.

GUIDES
1st Belton Guides have recently spent a great
weekend away at Patteson Lodge Activity Centre
in Coltishall where they enjoyed a variety of
activities including an obstacle course challenge
that had to be negotiated blindfolded whilst
carrying a cup of water without any spillage.
Their favourite activity was the aerial runway
which challenged the nerves of one or two who
don’t care much for heights and they were,
rightly, very pleased with themselves to have
overcome their fear and even had another turn.
They did their own design tie-dyed t-shirts with
some great results and even wore them to the
next Guide meeting. We also all painted glass
jars and put t-lights in them so we could have a
candlelit camp fire sing-a-long, a lovely way to
end the evening.

nights away badge and are also working towards
the outdoor pursuits badge which they started
while they were away. We all had an excellent
weekend with lots of fun and laughter and
greatly appreciate the help we received from the
Belton Charity Fundraisers which helped towards
the cost of activities and hire of Patteson Lodge.
The girls want to know when we’re going again!
We have spaces available for girls aged 10 – 14
years old. We are a very friendly group and love
to see new members. Try for yourself, why not
