Valentine Banquet in the Dining Room Jack and Mildred Savage B07 Please remember to sign up by February 10, 2015 Jack and Mildred Savage, along with this sweet puppy, “Jazzy “, have recently moved into B07. They both lived in Illinois for over 40 years. As a couple they moved to Tuscaloosa around 1996. They are blessed with three sons and a daughter. Mildred was a stay-at-home mother to their children, and Jack was a roofer by trade for 36 years. All three of their boys are now roofers as well. Mildred has always enjoyed being a housewife and taking care of her husband and children. She also enjoys gardening. Jack likes anything he can do outside. He loves to “piddle”. He has always enjoyed cutting grass, working in the yard, and anything to do with dogs and cats. The Savages have 7 grandchildren and 7 great– grandchildren. One of their granddaughters, Jacqueline Smith, and her family live in the Tuscaloosa area. Jacqueline and her daughter visit with them on a regular basis, and they are really blessed by those visits. If you haven’t met the Savages yet, plan to stop by soon to greet them and introduce yourself. Imogene Mills E08 Please welcome Imogene Mills and her pic-a-poo puppy, “Sweetie” to Pine Valley. Mrs. Mills recently moved into E08. Imogene was born and reared here in Tuscaloosa County. An interesting fact about Imogene is that she was raised in a house, where Pine Valley is now located. How cool is that? She said moving to Pine Valley was kind of like “moving back home ”since this was where she lived as a child. She was a stay -at -home mom to her only son, David Mills. Who currently lives in Huntsville. Imogene has two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mills has always loved to sew and also enjoys cooking. Chances are when you visit her apartment, it will smell divine. Ernestine Prisoc F52 Please welcome Ernestine Prisoc to our community. She has recently moved into F52. Ernestine was born and reared in Greensboro, Alabama. She retired from Vanity Fair in Demopolis, AL. Mrs. Prisoc moved here after falling and breaking her arm recently. Before that she was very active and really enjoyed working in the yard. She has two children, Margaret Kynard and Ronnie Prisoc. She also has 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grands. Lucky for her , most of the Grands and Great-Grands live here in the Tuscaloosa area. Mrs. Prisoc enjoys reading, cooking, crossword puzzles, flowers and playing dominoes! She looks forward to seeing what activities she can get involved with here at Pine Valley . To attend this Special Event. The cost is $8.00 per person. Chef’s Corner This will be severed in the Dining Room on February 9th Red Velvet Cheesecake Ingredients 1 pound milk chocolate, chopped 1/2 cup butter 1 9 oz package chocolate wafer cookies (40 to 50 cookies) 1 cup semisweet chocolate pieces 1 cup slivered almonds 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup butter, melted 4 8 oz packages cream cheese, softened 1 8 oz carton dairy sour cream 1/3 cup granulated sugar Directions 1. In a medium saucepan, melt chocolate and 1/2 cup butter over low heat; transfer to a bowl and cool completely. 2. Place wafer cookies, chocolate pieces, almonds and brown sugar in a large food processor. Cover and process until finely ground. Add the 1/2 cup melted butter, cover and process until well combined. Transfer crumbs to a 10x3inch spring form pan with a removable bottom. Press crumbs onto bottom and up the sides of the pan, leaving a 1/2 inch space at the top of the pan. Set aside. For Filling: 1. In a very large mixing bowl, beat the cooled chocolate mixture, cream cheese, sour cream, sugar, buttermilk and red food coloring with an electric mixer on medium to high speed until combined. Add 4 eggs and 2 egg yolks all at once. Beat on low speed just until combined. 2 egg yolks 2. Pour filling into crumb-crust lined spring form pan. Cool cheesecake in pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Use a small metal spatula to loosen cheese from sides of pan. Cool 30 minutes more. Remove sides of pan. Cool for 1 hour, cover and chill at least 4 hours. Fresh raspberries or strawberries 3. To serve, top with berries 1/3 cup buttermilk 1 1 oz bottle red food coloring (2 Tbsp.) 4 eggs Making Memoreies with Angie Cooper Don’t You Just Love February ? This month is spilling over with Activities for your enjoyment! There will be Football, (again) ~ Super Bowl XLIX. We’ll see if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow at 7:25 A.M. on the 2nd. Singings and Socials will sprinkle the month. Those Pickens County Singing Men will perform, as will our T-Town Strummer friends. The Delta Gam Gals will direct out Resident Sing-A-Long, as well as perform for a most enjoyable Entertainment Night! We all will honor RED DAY by dressing in Red attire for Heart Disease awareness and its impact on Women! Then we’ll celebrate the birth anniversary of Levi Strauss. creator of the world’s first jeans, by wearing Blue Jeans on Thursday the 26th. There will be Bible Study, Book Club, Bookmobiles and Bingos! Poetry, Pop Culture and Heart Art is bound to interest someone. Not to mention, on the 15th, POTUS & His FLOTUS! We’ll have our Annual Valentine’s Banquet and crown a new King & Queen. Then on SHROVE “FAT” Tuesday come on down and Laissez Les bon temps roulez (“Let the good times roll”)! Mardi Gras wouldn’t be complete without a PARTY… and will we ever PARTY!!! We’ll (“Joie de vivre”) celebrate the (“joy of living”). This is a THANK YOU from Janie for her 1 year Anniversary of Service to Residents at Pine Valley. Ethel Wilson F19 Ethel Wilson has recently joined us at Pine Valley. Mrs. Wilson was born in Pennsylvania and lived there for 20 years before moving to Ohio, where she lived for about 55 years. She and her husband raised their only child there. Her daughter, Trisha Neighbors ,lives here in Tuscaloosa where she is a teacher at a local school. Ethel has two granddaughters, one lives in Australia, and the other lives in Birmingham. For most of Ethel’s life she was a stay-at-home mother, but she has worked as a bookkeeper. In her spare time Ethel enjoyed crocheting. She still likes visiting with friends and neighbors and playing cards, especially a game called Euchre. Anyone wanting to learn to play this game please get in touch with her. She would love to have some card playing partners here at Pine Valley! Brooks Ward D03 Another new resident here at Pine Valley is Mr. Brooks Ward in D03. Mr. Ward was born in Lamar County in a small town called Vernon, Alabama. He was a member of the United States Army and was stationed at Ft. Knox. His group was considered the “School Troop”. In 1955 he moved to Tuscaloosa to work with Buford Boone and The Tuscaloosa News. After Buford retired, Brooks also worked with Buford’s son ,Jim Boone. He did everything at the paper from being the Janitor to reconstruction of new offices they acquired, to being a part of the management group. He and Jim traveled all across the Southeast remodeling newspaper offices. When the New York Times bought the newspaper, he continued to work for them from 1984 until he retired in 1994. Mr. Ward was married to his sweetheart, Maxine for 63 wonderful years. They were blessed with two daughters. One lives in Birmingham, and one in Pensacola. In 2001 the Wards moved to Florida, where they resided for 13 years. After Maxine’s death Brooks decided to come back to Tuscaloosa. He always enjoyed photography and carpentry, but his favorite past time was woodworking. He has several beautiful handmade pieces in his apartment. He said he and his wife “never bought a piece of furniture, he just made it all”! When you get an opportunity, please stop by for a visit with him, and be sure to take a look at his great creative skills. You will be amazed! Otis Nelson F43 Otis Nelson was born and reared in Northport and the Alberta City area of Tuscaloosa County. He joined the Navy in 1950. After leaving the Navy in 1953, he went to seminary in Kentucky. After seminary, he worked as a pastor in Florida and Georgia before moving to South Carolina to become the Director of International Programs at Clemson University. After working at Clemson for 30 years, he retired and went to Bolivia for 6 months to do mission work. He also became a professional volunteer with the Red Cross. He travelled to Ground Zero, the site of the fallen World Trade Centers, and worked there for 7 weeks. He has also volunteered to help during every hurricane from Florida to Texas from 1993 until 2003. He was married for 29 years and has two sons and one daughter, which all three of which graduated from Clemson University. One son resides in California, one in Texas, and his daughter lives in Arizona. He has been blessed with 8 Grandchildren and 2 great-grands. Since his retirement, Otis has really enjoyed golfing. He is looking forward to spring weather so he can resume his swing. He also enjoys music and is trying to teach himself to play the keyboard. Mr. Nelson has several siblings and their extended families that live here in the Tuscaloosa area. He is excited about living closer to them. Otis has lots of interesting stories to tell, so stop and talk with him when you a minute. You will not be disappointed!
