VINCENT de PAUL QUARTERLY REPORT Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference had another successful quarter, thanks to your support. The number of people we served increased by 26%. This translates into helping 188 families. Our financial help per family also increased by 26%. We have also started ‘twinning” with Fr. Tim’s parish in Brownsville. Twinning means we are sharing some of our financial resources with them, similar to the way Greensburg helps us with utility revenue during the winter months. You have been very supportive of our Thrift Store and with your donations directly to our St. Vincent de Paul Conference. We sincerely feel you are reaching out to the poor with your constant support. We are still visiting the elderly in the nursing homes. Our visits are less compared to last year because we have lost some volunteers. We could use your help! Please contact Terri Tedeschi at 724-388-4006, if you can help once a month making a visit. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a wonderful way to evangelize and you would find it very gratifying. Please contact Chuck Spadafora at 724-801-6029, if you are interested. You could attend our monthly meeting to see how we work. We meet at St. Bernard Church social hall the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6 PM. God Bless you for all you do! FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions by Catholics Questions are often asked about marriage in the church for the Catholic individual: Can we be married on a beach, a special destination, in our back yard, at a country club, hotel ballroom? Who can serve as witnesses? What readings may we use? Why can’t I have “Here Comes the Bride”? The short answer is NO. As a Catholic Christian, you are bound by canonical law to be married in your home church. However, permission may be granted for you to be married in another Catholic Church. This would be in the case of needing a larger church to accommodate the guests, using the college chapel where you met or in the home parish of your spouse-tobe. Canon 1118.1 allows for this. Canon 1118.2 states that a bishop can allow for a change of venue to another suitable space. It would seem that you could request this of a bishop and you might be able to be married at a destination other than a church. The circumstances for this to occur are very specific. Since the Church views marriage as a sacrament most bishops will not give this permission. They are concerned with the sacramental nature of the wedding and believe that the parish church is the suitable place for the reception of sacraments. Again, it is always best to talk to your priest as you are making this important step in your life. First Reading — Brothers and sisters of every race and language will be brought to Jerusalem (Isaiah 66:18-21). Psalm — Go out to all the world and tell the Good News (Psalm 117). Second Reading — Be strong and endure your trials as the “discipline” of a loving God, for it will result in the peaceful fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13). Gospel — People from east and west, north and south, recline at table in the kingdom of God (Luke 13:22-30). ADULT: How do I give life service—more than mere lip service—to living the way of Jesus? CHILD: How do my actions proclaim that I believe in Jesus Christ? DISCIPLINE It is no accident that the words “disciple” and “discipline” are nearly identical. Their relationship in Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past generation, as certain prescribed Church rules and regulations have been reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as “disciplines.” We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer takes discipline to follow Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his cross. It is that same desire he encourages in us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are there not because of mere observation of rules, but out of a genuine desire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent decades, attention has shifted away from headgear as a symbol of a bishop’s authority to a more substantial symbol: the chair, called the cathedra. The word comes from the Latin word for a chair with armrests. It is exactly the reason why dining room sets were marketed in this country a few years ago with only one chair with armrests, the captain’s chair. For us, the cathedra is a sign of the teaching authority of the bishop. We inherited the symbolism of the chair from Roman civil life in the fourth century. A church that houses a cathedra is called a cathedral, and the chair may be used only by the bishop of that diocese. Priests who preside at liturgy there must use a different presidential chair. You may find the cathedra in its most traditional place at the head of the apse, or against a side wall as was favored in medieval times, but increasingly bishops are locating the cathedra in the midst of the assembly of the faithful. In the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, visitors will find no barrier to their trying out the cathedra, an expression of hospitality that helps the archbishop be mindful of those whom he serves. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. PRAYER Jesus, we desire to eat and drink in your company for all eternity. Show me the way to live so that, nourished by you, I can feed others with your all-inclusive and unconditional love. Amen. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Daily Readings—Week of August 21, 2016 Sunday: Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Sunday: TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Is 66:18-21; Ps 117:1, 2; Heb 12:5-7, 11-13; Lk 13:22-30 THE QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY 2 Thes 1:1-5, 11-12; Ps 96:1-5; Mt 23:13-22 SAINT ROSE OF LIMA, Virgin 2 Thes 2:1-3a, 14-17; Ps 96:10-13; Mt 23:23-26 SAINT BARTHOLOMEW, Apostle Rv 21:9b-14; Ps 145:10-13, 17-18; Jn 1:45-51 SAINT LOUIS OF FRANCE, SAINT JOSEPH CALASANZ, Priest 1 Cor 1:1-9; Ps 145:2-7; Mt 24:42-51 1 Cor 1:17-25; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 10-11; Mt 25:1-13 SAINT MONICA 1 Cor 1:26-31; Ps 33:12-13, 18-21; Mt 25:14-30 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Sir 3:17-18, 20, 28-29; Ps 68:4-7, 10-11; Heb 12:18-19, 22-24a; Lk 14:1, 7-14 Liturgical Ministry Schedule for August 27/28 5:30 PM Altar Servers: Steve Budash Andrew Levendusky 7:30 AM 9:30 AM Will Filipovich Morgan Adamson Shannon Filipovich Isaac Marshall Emily Marshall EME: Cathy Williams Irene Kopczyk Peg McClelland Molly Lyons Scott Simpson Bob McClelland Mike Morris Dennis Moorhead Robert Dalecki Elinor Carson Sis Moorhead Pat Butler Barb Manzek Carol Michael Christina Bruno Vicky Nastase John Sokol Marge Antolik Mary K Moreau Sr. Jackie Mary Tremel Marjean Cramer Sr. Jackie Adam Marshall Donna Pike Lector: St. Bernard of Clairvaux Liturgy Schedule Week of August 22-28 Monday, August 22 The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary 7:30 AM +Michael Bugay (Phil & Dorothy Jablunovsky) Tuesday, August 23 St. Rose of Lima 7:30 AM All Souls in Purgatory 12-7 Eucharistic Adoration Wednesday, August 24 St. Bartholomew 7:30 AM +George Medlock (Ruth Blair) (Daughter) Thursday, August 25 St. Louis; St. Joseph Calasanz 7:30 AM Living & Deceased Members of Andrew Koma Family (Ed & Julie Receski) Friday, August 26 7:30 AM +Madelyn & Mike Sibo (Sibo Family) Saturday, August 27 St. Monica 7:30 AM Theresa & Robert Krynock (59th Wedding Anniv.) 8:30-10:00 AM Confessions 5:30 PM +Rochna Family (Charles & Christine Rochna) Sunday, August 28 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 7:30 AM For Our Parishioners 9:30 AM +Joseph M.
