Maimonides Geriatric Centre Foundation Suite Dreams Capital Renovation
Campaign recently received a very generous bequest from the Estate of the late
Isaac Braunstein. Mr. Braunstein was a humble man who worked several jobs to
help care for his family, while continuing to play his beloved violin in what is now
the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Even as the
family struggled to make ends meet, Mr.
Braunstein and his wife, Clara, diligently put
aside savings for a rainy day.
The Braunsteins always dreamt of one day
being able to provide for others less fortunate,
and leaving their money to a health care facility
seemed an obvious choice given that Mr.
Braunstein put great value on his health. “He
believed that the most important thing is to be
well. He always said that if you do not have health,
you have nothing,” says grandson Greg Huyer
recalling how his grandfather, at age 101, still
exercised daily. His grandson Jonathan recalls one
of Isaac’s visits to the doctor at 100 years old when
he wasn’t feeling well. “The doctor told him that
he couldn’t make him any younger. To that, my
grandfather replied that he didn’t want to get younger but rather he wanted to get
older.” How fitting that he should leave a generous donation to a facility like
Maimonides that cares for the elderly population, including his wife of 69 years,
who spent her final days in the care of the Hospital of Hope. “Maimonides very
accurately reflects my grandfather’s core values. It is filled with caring people who
love life. It provides comfort and support. It is truly a place that my grandfather felt
was a worthy institution to support,” adds grandson Tim Huyer.
The recently-renovated terrace off the main lobby will be named in honour of
the donation from the late Isaac and Clara Braunstein. Please contact Foundation

Dreams Capital Renovation Campaign.
La campagne de financement du projet de rénovation Suites Royales de la
Fondation du Centre gériatrique Maimonides a reçu un don très généreux de la
succession de feu Isaac Braunstein. M. Braunstein était un homme modeste qui a
occupé plusieurs emplois pour faire vivre sa famille, tout en continuant à jouer son
cher violon au sein de ce qui allait devenir
l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Même s’ils
avaient du mal à arriver, M. Braunstein et sa femme
Clara économisaient en cas de mauvais jours.
Les Braunstein avaient toujours rêvé d’être un
jour assez fortunés pour venir en aide à ceux qui en
ont besoin. Laisser un don à un établissement de
soins de santé semblait un choix évident puisque M.
Braunstein valorisait la santé. Son petit-fils Greg
Huyer se rappelle cette phrase de son grand-père :
« La santé, c’est le plus important. Quand on a la
santé, on a tout ». Il se rappelle aussi que son grandpère faisait de l’exercice tous les jours, même à 101
ans. Son petit-fils, Jonathan, se souvient d’une visite
de son grand-père chez le médecin à l’âge de 100
ans. « Le médecin lui avait dit « Je ne peux pas vous
rajeunir, Monsieur », ce à quoi grand-papa avait
répondu : « Je ne veux pas rajeunir, je veux vivre plus longtemps ». N’est-ce pas
approprié qu’il donne généreusement à un établissement comme Maimonides qui
est voué à la population âgée? M. Braunstein avait pris soin de sa femme de 69 ans
qui s’est éteinte à l’Hôpital juif de l’espérance. « Maimonides incarne les valeurs de
base de mon grand-père. On y trouve des gens compatissants qui aiment la vie.
C’est un établissement qui offre bien-être et soutien et qui, selon mon grand-père,
méritait son aide », ajoute son petit-fils Tim Huyer.
La terrasse récemment rénovée près du hall d’entrée principale sera nommée
en l’honneur d’Isaac et de Clara Braunstein. Pour discuter de la possibilité

THREE-YEAR ACCREDITATION GRANTED
Maimonides Geriatric Centre has received a glowing accreditation report from the Canadian Council of Health
Services Accreditation(CCHSA) and is fully accredited for another three years. “I’m so proud of the teamwork
that Maimonides is recognized for, from our dedicated staff to our community partners, volunteers, and
donors. The result is the best care possible for our residents,” says Len Lewkowict, President of the Centre
Board. The Centre garnered high praise for the quality of care given to its residents as well as its home-like
environment, innovative approach to community services and excellent collaboration amongst departments.
The surveyors emphasized that people are the biggest strength at Maimonides.

NEW Accredited Home
Maimonides is pleased to announce the opening of a
beautiful new accredited home for 7 residents on
Macdonald Avenue in the heart of the Snowdon area.
The Rousakova home joins our existing network of 7
quality accredited homes in the community. Residents
enjoy an intimate supervised setting with managers
living on site. These homes are suitable for people who
can no longer take care of themselves at home but do
not require the higher level of care provided at
Maimonides Geriatric Centre. They can be accessed
through the local CLSC. For more information, please

d’agrément des services de santé (CCASS) et le statut d’agrément complet pour trois autres années. « Je suis
très fier que Maimonides soit reconnu pour son travail d’équipe, mettant à contribution notre personnel
dévoué, nos partenaires dans la collectivité, les bénévoles et les donateurs. Le résultat se traduit par de
meilleurs soins pour nos résidents », affirme Len Lewkowict, président du Conseil d’administration du
Centre. Notre Centre a reçu des éloges pour la qualité des soins dispensés à nos résidents, notre milieu de type
familial, notre approche innovatrice aux services communautaires et l’excellente collaboration qui règne

Maimonides Geriatric Centre Foundation mourns
the recent passing of our beloved board member
Dave Singerman.
Dave Singerman was actively
involved at the Maimonides
Foundation since the 1980s, and
was a very successful fundraiser,
advisor and leader. He was the
President of the Foundation
board in 1997-1998 and
remained a board member up
until his death a few months
ago. In the early 1990’s Dave
founded the Foundation’s most
enduring project, the Golf
Tournament. He served on the
golf committee every year since
its inception. Dave served as chair of the Centre’s
85 th Anniversary Gala, and was instrumental
in organizing two Jackie Mason benefit
performances, which produced a record level of
donations for the Foundation. In 2003, Dave
co-chaired the Foundation’s newest project, the
Battle of the Bands, an event that has grown to
a two-night extravaganza, last year at the
Spectrum. Dave received the Foundation's ABCD
Award (Above and Beyond the Call of Duty),
acknowledging the important contribution he has
made to our community. We will miss him greatly.

Dave Singerman a participé
activement à la Fondation de
Maimonides depuis les années
1980 et il était un excellent
collecteur de fonds, conseiller et
leader. Il a agi comme président
du conseil de la Fondation en
1997-1998 et comme membre du
Conseil jusqu’à son décès il y a
quelques mois. Au début des
années 1990, Dave a mis sur pied
le tournoi de golf, notre projet le
plus durable et a fait partie du
comité de golf depuis le début.
De plus, il a présidé le gala du 85 e anniversaire du
Centre, et a joué un rôle clé dans l’organisation de
deux spectacles bénéfices de Jackie Mason qui ont
produit des dons record pour la Fondation. En
2003, Dave a co-présidé le nouveau projet de la
fondation – Battle of the Bands, un spectacle
somptueux qui a été présenté deux soirs l’an
dernier au Spectrum. Dave a reçu le prix ABCD
de la Fondation en reconnaissance de son
dévouement hors pair et de son apport à la
communauté. Il nous manquera beaucoup.
NOUVELLE résidence
d’accueil accréditée
Le Centre gériatrique Maimonides est heureux
d’annoncer l’ouverture d’une belle résidence d’accueil
accréditée pour sept résidents, située sur l’avenue
Macdonald dans le coeur de Snowdon. La résidence
Rousakova fait partie du réseau de sept résidences
d’accueil de qualité dans la communauté. Les résidents
y bénéficient d’un cadre intime supervisé par des
gestionnaires qui vivent sur les lieux. Il s’agit d’un
endroit pour personnes qui ne peuvent plus vivre seules
mais qui n’ont pas besoin du type de soins prodigués à
Maimonides. Ils ont accès aux soins nécessaires au

New Venue Brings Record
Profits, Attendance and Fun!
The 4th annual Maimonides Battle of the Bands was a rock’n
success generating $190,000 towards the Suite Dreams
Capital Renovation Campaign to refurbish all of the
residents’ rooms.
After three years at Club Soda, the two-night sellout event
moved to a bigger venue – the Spectrum on Wednesday
December 6th and Thursday December 7th 2006. Eight amateur
bands made up of dentists, lawyers and other professionals
belted it out to raise funds for Maimonides Geriatric Centre.
“Wow! Two incredible nights at one incredible venue. It was
wonderful to see so many important people in the
community come out for two evenings of great fun and to
support a great cause,” says Rory Olson, co-chair of the Battle
of the Bands committee. “There is such a huge buzz in the
community about this event. Tickets to this show are always
hot commodities,” adds co-chair Elliot Mechanic.
Andy Nulman was an exceptional MC for both nights
opening the show performing with The Matt Demons.
Cooneytunes jingle master Ian Cooney did a brilliant job as
producer, and performed with Sky Lounge.
Thanks to every one who helped make the 2006 event a
rock’n success. We look forward to this year’s show, on the
move again to The Metropolis on December 5th and 6th 2007.

Des profits et une foule record au
nouveau endroit tout en s’amusant
La quatrième édition de l’événement Battle of the Bands de
Maimonides a connu un franc succès : une collecte de 190 000 $ qui
sera versée à la campagne Suites royales ayant pour but de remettre
à neuf toutes les chambres des résidents.
Après trois années au Club Soda, l’événement de deux soirs à
guichets fermés s’est déroulé dans une plus grande salle – le
Spectrum, le mercredi 6 décembre et le jeudi 7 décembre 2006. Huit
orchestres amateurs – formés de dentistes, d’avocats et d’autres
professionnels – se sont produits devant une salle comble pour
recueillir des fonds au profit du Centre gériatrique Maimonides.
« Wow! Deux soirées mémorables dans une salle incroyable. Quel
plaisir de voir autant de personnalités de la collectivité se déplacer
pour appuyer une cause aussi valable », déclare Rory Olson,
co-président du comité Battle of the Bands. « Cet événement suscite
beaucoup d’enthousiasme dans la collectivité et les billets se
vendent comme des petits pains chauds », ajoute le co-président
Elliot Mechanic.
Andy Nulman a rempli son rôle de maître de cérémonie avec brio les
deux soirs, se donnant en spectacle avec The Matt Demons. Le roi des
refrains publicitaires, Ian Cooney, a fait un excellent travail comme
producteur et nous a présenté une pièce spéciale avec Sky Lounge.
Merci à tous ceux et celles qui ont fait de l’événement 2006 un
succès aussi retentissant. Nous anticipons avec plaisir le spectacle de
cette année qui déménage cette fois au Métropolis les 5 et 6

Thanks to a generous donation from Lindor
Inc, the Foundation recently purchased 11
portable machines that make taking blood
pressure, measuring oxygen levels and taking
temperature seamless. “This kind of cutting
edge equipment improves the residents’ quality
of life,” says Lucie Tremblay, Director of Nursing
and Clinical Services “We often get asked by
donors for a wish list of needed equipment. It is
not so simple since the needs of our residents
change daily and the advancements in
technology are changing just as quickly,” adds
Tremblay.
“When someone donates money, they like to see the
result. It’s important for our donors to know that they
are making a noticeable difference in people’s lives.
Equipment is very tangible and allows the donor to see
for themselves the impact they have,” says Allen
Quallenberg, Foundation President.

After four years as President of the Maimonides
Foundation, Larry Nachshen has stepped down.
“Larry was a visionary leader who nurtured the
concept of collaboration, friend-raising and fundspending. He set a remarkable example and is a
true friend,” says Len Lewkowict, Centre Board
President. Larry mentored many board members
including the current Foundation President, Allen
Quallenberg. “I am honoured to be at the helm of
this wonderful organization and hope to continue

When long-term care is needed
How to get into Maimonides
Your mother or father needs long-term care, what now?
The first step is to contact the local CSSS (formerly CLSC) to have your parent
evaluated. If your parent is at a hospital, the hospital social worker can also do the
initial evaluation. The social worker will fill out the proper forms requesting suitable
placement based on the care required and the facility of choice.

a doctor’s visit.” During the wait period,
monthly tours are available to the resource the
person will be moving in to.

When a place actually becomes available,
the social worker will let the client know.
Due to the shortage of beds, government
guidelines are that the client/family has
24 hours to accept this place and move
to Maimonides 48 hours from the time
the social worker calls. If you feel you are
not ready, the space can be refused.
Maimonides will delay 30 days and then
make contact again when the next bed
becomes available. If the client is still not
ready to come, their file will be closed and a
new request will need to be made if the
situation changes.

Short-Term Respite Stays

Caregivers experience tremendous levels of stress and need a break. For example, if
you have been taking care of your husband who has Parkinsons at home for the last
two years and you want to take a vacation or just need to recharge your batteries,
Maimonides offers short-term relief. Six private rooms at the Centre are designated
for respite care for 2-4 week stays at a government regulated cost of 8$ per day.
Caregivers are entitled to 8 weeks of respite a year. It is important to note that this
time may be booked in advance, for instance, to attend an out of town wedding or
bar mitzvah. Access to this program is made through the local CLSC.
Les aidants vivent un grand stress et ont besoin de répit. Par exemple, si depuis deux
ans vous prenez soin à la maison de votre mari atteint de Parkinson et que vous
voulez prendre des vacances ou refaire le plein d’énergie, Maimonides peut vous
aider. Au Centre, six chambres à un lit au sont réservées aux soins de répit pour une
période de deux à quatre semaines, à un coût de 8 $ par jour qui est fixé par le

guest speaker at the World Leisure Congress in Hangzhou, China.

Long-term Care Facility – An Interdisciplinary Approach.
Maimonides Executive Director Barbra Gold is Chair-Elect of
the Association of Jewish Aging Services of North America (AJAS)
Board of Directors.
Dr. Brian Gore, Lynn Fournier, Dr. Johanne Monette, Lucie
Tremblay participated in “Optimisation of psychological and
behavioral symptoms of dementia (PBSD) in long-term care: a
pilot study” at the Congrès international francophone de
gérontologie et gériatrie in Quebec City.
Silvana Mauro was a member of a scientific committee that
completed the National Education program on restraint
reduction, in collaboration with the Quebec Ministry of Health.
This program is called “Programme de formation: Vers un
changement de pratique afin de reduire le recours a la
contention et a l’isolement”. Ms. Mauro also co-authored several
chapters on the subject.
Madeleine Senosier, Infection Control Consultant, made a
presentation entitled « Surveillance en soins de longue durée
et autres milieux » at the Journées Annuelles de Prevention des
Infection.
Fruan Tabamo, Head Nurse, spoke to the Cote St. Luc’s Men’s
Club about the Life Biography Project.
Fruan Tabamo, Lyne Camiré, Silvana Mauro spoke about the
Pressure Ulcer Awareness Program (PUAP), a National Pilot
Project, at the 12th Annual Conference of the Canadian
Association of Wound Care held in Ottawa.
Lucie Tremblay, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services,
spoke about our award-winning restraint-reduction program at
the Congrès international francophone de gérontologie et
gériatrie in Quebec City. She was joined by Silvana Mauro, Sheila
Fischer, Viola Kam and Genevieve Angers to discuss the
restraint-reduction program at the Enhancing Safety in the Home,
Community and Long-term Care conference which was held in
Edmonton, Alberta.
Lucie Tremblay presented the restraint-reduction program to
the Alzheimer Association in Granby, Quebec.
Ms Tremblay authored several chapters published in the book
“Soins Infirmiers aux aînés en perte d’autonomie, une approche
adaptée au CHSLD.”

the Centre de santé et services sociaux des Aurores Boréales in

and is highly respected by, staff, residents and families. “Lucie is a gem.

Maimonides Geriatric Centre is recycling used
hearing aids, thanks to the commitment of
RNA Nechama Surik. “The government
pays for only one aid every five years for
the elderly. Each aid is about $1000 and,
if a resident is not eligible for the one
covered by Medicare and can’t afford to buy one, they end up not
hearing. This greatly limits their quality of life,” says Surik, who herself requires two aids. After recently
appearing on a number of local news shows, Surik received over a dozen second-hand hearing aids. These are
being used for teaching purposes in her regular “walk in” clinics or, after being checked and adjusted by
audioprosthesists, distributed to those in need. “Most people didn’t know what to do with them once the person
passed away so the aids just sat in a drawer.” These can be recycled at a fraction of the cost of new ones. If you

d’appareils usagés. Après avoir été vérifiés et ajustés par des audioprothésistes, ils servent aux fins
d’enseignement lors des cliniques organisées régulièrement par Nechama, et ils sont ensuite distribués à ceux qui
en ont besoin. « Après le décès d’une personne, la famille ne sait pas quoi faire de la prothèse du défunt et la
range dans un tiroir ». Ces appareils peuvent être recyclés à une fraction du coût qu’exigerait un nouveau

Beautifying the environment
Maimonides continues its growing partnership
with the Art for Healing Foundation. Art galleries
are being created throughout Maimonides to
enhance the physical space thanks in large part
to the generous donations by several local artists
and collectors.
“Galleries” are what the Art for Healing
Foundation creates when multiple art works are
donated by a given artist or collector and then
grouped together. There is always a theme for
each gallery and they are named, complete with
accompanying biography, in honour of their
donor. To date, galleries have been hung in each
of the four wings of the 5th floor and have begun
to be installed on the 4th floor. Here are photos of
several of the artists as they visit their namesake
gallery.

l’Art pour la guérison lorsque plusieurs

l’honneur de son donateur, chaque galerie a
un thème particulier et comporte une
biographie. À ce jour, des galeries ont été
installées dans les quatre ailes du 5e étage et le
4e étage emboîte le pas. Ci-dessous, on voit des
photos de plusieurs artistes visitant les galeries
qui portent leur nom.

1 Art collector A. McKenzie Brockman is seen
here with his good friend, author and historian,
Joe King, right. Brockman donated sixteen
pieces from his personal collection to create a
4th floor gallery named in his honour. King
himself has donated sixty-five images from his
two books based on the history of the Jewish
Community of Montreal, “From the Ghetto to
the Main” and “Baron Byng to Bagels”. These
images are slated for installation as a gallery, this
spring, on the 4th floor.

Celebrating 100 Years – Happy Birthday!

As Maimonides Geriatric Centre approaches its 100th
anniversary in 2010, we wanted to profile some of our
residents who recently celebrated their centennial.
100 years is truly a remarkable achievement.

À l’approche du 100e anniversaire du Centre
gériatrique Maimonides en 2010, nous tenons à
souligner quelques-uns de nos résidents qui ont
récemment célébré leur centenaire. 100 ans, c’est
vraiment remarquable. Félicitations !
Bella Schonfeld
Bella Schonfeld
Mrs. Bella Schonfeld was born in a small Hungarian
Village on February 10, 1907, the oldest of seven
children. Her father died in World War 1 and her
mother was left to raise all seven kids alone. Mrs.
Schonfeld got married in 1927 and had four children
between 1929-1939. This was a very difficult period for
Jews, leading to World War 2. In 1942, Mrs. Schonfeld’s
husband was taken away to serve in the working units
with the Hungarian army leaving Mrs. Schonfeld to
raise her children on her own during wartime. She and
her children were destined to death camps but instead
were transported to work in Austria. As the war
progressed, the family was later transferred to Bergen
Belsen and to Terezin, where the Russians liberated the
camp in 1945. She managed to keep all her children
alive during this horrible time. After the War, the family
was miraculously reunited with her husband. In 1959,
she emigrated to Canada. Her family, which includes 9
grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren is now
spread over Canada, US and Israel.
Kay Cohen
Miss Kay Cohen was born in Montreal on April 23,
1906, one of six children. She loves to share stories
about her life. Miss Cohen worked many different jobs
in Montreal, Detroit and New York up until she was 70.
She remembers the beginning of radio and working in
the first radio store to open in Detroit. Miss Cohen has
never been married, though she admits that she has
been in love and proposed to several times in her 100
years. Miss Cohen always had a passion for drawing
and painting and still participates in the Arts program
at Maimonides, her home since 2002.
Sara Ancsel
Mrs. Sara Anscel was born in a little Romanian village
on January 10, 1907. She lived through two World Wars
and was a very determined lady. She had an incredible
strong will for survival throughout her life. After her
husband died in the concentration camps, Mrs. Anscel
was left to raise 4 children on her own. She came to
Canada in 1948 to make a better life for her family. She
worked many different jobs to make ends meet
including a job in a hat factory and as a cashier in the
cafeteria at the Jewish General Hospital. Mrs. Anscel is
a grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of 16. She
has been a Maimonides resident since 2003.

Mrs. Schonfeld is pictured along with her daughter Vera

Mme Bella Schonfeld est née dans un petit village en

Kay Cohen

l’âge de 70 ans. Elle se souvient des débuts de la radio
et de son premier emploi dans le premier magasin de

Tina Shapiro visits her 93 year old
grandmother Sylvia Gertsman almost every
Sunday at Maimonides. They often attend the
music program in the synagogue. It’s family
time – an opportunity to just be together and
enjoy each other’s company.
When Tina was given the responsibility of
finding an organization that would most
benefit from a generous donation from her
family, she thought of Maimonides. “It’s a
place that my grandmother calls home and
where my grandfather spent the last years of his life,” says Shapiro, sitting with her
mother Peggy in her grandmother’s 5th floor room adorned with family pictures.
Shapiro wanted the donation to be used for a specific purpose, as opposed to
sitting in an endowment fund. “I want to know where the money goes, to be able to
see the impact it has now,” she says. Shapiro asked that her family’s donation be
used for the Sunday afternoon programming that her grandmother loves so much.
As well, she asked that a portion of the donation be designated for the Bursary
program, giving staff the opportunity to upgrade their skills. “The staff at
Maimonides is incredible. By obtaining a higher education, everyone benefits,
including residents like my grandmother.”
Donations like the Shapiros’ ensure that Maimonides continues to lead the
way in geriatric care. If you wish to make a donation for a specific program

Tina Shapiro vient presque chaque dimanche à
Maimonides visiter Sylvia Gertsman, sa grandmère de 93 ans. Ensemble, elles assistent souvent

compagnie.
Lorsque Tina s’est vu confier la responsabilité
de trouver un organisme qui bénéficierait le plus

à Maimonides. « Ma grand-mère se sent à l’aise
ici et c’est aussi où mon grand-père a passé ses
dernières années », affirme Tina, en compagnie de sa mère dans la chambre de
sa grand-mère au 5e étage, entourées de photos de la famille.
Tina voulait que le don soit réservé à une utilisation précise, au lieu de rester dans
un fond de dotation. « Je veux voir où va l’argent et l’impact qu’il a maintenant »,
dit-elle. Tina a demandé que le don serve au programme du dimanche après-midi
tant affectionné par sa grand-mère. De plus, elle a voulu qu’une partie du don aille
au programme de bourse qui permet au personnel de perfectionner ses
compétences. « Les employés de Maimonides sont incroyables. En leur donnant
accès à une meilleure éducation, tout le monde y gagne, y compris ma grandmère ». Grâce à des dons comme celui de la famille Shapiro, le Centre gériatrique
Maimonides demeure à l’avant-garde des soins gériatriques.
