Volunteer BULLETIN des bénévoles SPRING/PRINTEMPS 2015 Update on Bill 10 Bill 10, which was recently adopted by the provincial government, completely restructures the Quebec health care system. Besides abolishing the Agence de la santé et Services sociaux, the bill reduces the number of medical establishments from 182 to 33 Centres integrés de santé et service sociaux (CISSS) or Centres integrés universitaires de santé et service sociaux (CIUSSS) if affiliated with a University. Jewish Eldercare Centre and Donald Berman Maimonides falls into the group known as CIUSSS Centre-Ouest de l’Ile (Centre-West), which include the following: The Jewish General Hospital, Miriam Home and Services, Mount Sinai, CSSS Cavendish, CSSS de la Montagne and Constance-Lethbridge, MAB-Mackay. Bill 10 does not affect our volunteers. We thank you for filling the many staff requests for volunteers throughout the season and we look forward to our continued partnerships in the future. Please pick up your volunteer appreciation pin in the Volunteer Office during National Volunteer Week. Refreshments will be served. A SHOUT-OUT TO OUR WEEKEND VOLUNTEERS! Though the office staff doesn’t work on the weekends, DBM and JEC are busy 7 days a week. We may not get to see and thank our weekend volunteers in person but we are extremely grateful for their time, energy and devotion to our residents. Le projet de loi 10 ne touche pas nos bénévoles. Nous vous remercions de répondre aux nombreuses demandes du personnel qui ont besoin de vous durant la saison, et nous espérons poursuivre notre partenariat avec vous dans le futur. The nurses are great to work with and I feel very welcomed and appreciated. I had a great experience with my resident who has a beautiful smile... We held hands together during her meal making dinner more pleasant and I stayed for about a half an hour before she was taken to her room. I also spent some time with another resident–we shared some laughs, good conversation and big hugs before I left for the evening. I look forward to next Friday! This experience is getting me ready for when I begin my clinicals for school at PACC. Jennifer O’Connor, JEC Volunteer “Really Good Stuff” Have you recently won an award? Are you celebrating a milestone? Have you accomplished something you are really proud of? We want to hear all about the happy events in our volunteers’ lives. Thank you to the group of Secondary 4 girls from Yeshiva Yavne who recently helped out with the healing service on 6th floor at DBM. 2 Volunteer BULLETIN des bénévoles | Please give your “Really Good Stuff” to Patti Derstenfeld, Roz Friend or Lisa Patterson in the Volunteer Offices. Spring/Printemps 2015 Our Staff say thank you to our volunteers Notre personnel dit merci à nos bénévoles Mary Tragoulias is a true treasure; her commitment to the Bowling Program and her compassion for the residents is remarkable. Residents on the 4th floor look forward to her motivating words and enthusiasm every week and the program would not have the same success without her. Catherine Drew, Therapeutic Recreation at DBM I value and respect Selma Schneiderman’s commitment and devotion; she gives on a weekly basis during the 3rd floor Breakfast Club. Her compassionate contribution continues to fuel my energy as a professional. The residents and I are very grateful to have forged this special partnership. Thank you Selma! Lucy Bridgeman, Therapeutic Recreation at DBM Having Gary Perlman and Maryam Hosseini as volunteers make our workload much lighter. I am thankful because there’s no snowstorm or harsh weather can keep them from coming to help out. My hat’s off to both of them and would like to give my deepest gratitude to my volunteers. Sondra Goldman, Art Therapist at DBM The volunteers who bring residents to daily and Shabbat services are warm and caring.
