creating a tax return
THE GUIDE TO CREATING A TAX RETURN TaxCalc can produce tax returns for multiple tax years. Currently it supports the 2013-2014, 2012-2013 and 2011-2012 tax years for Income Tax and years dating back to 2007 for Corporation Tax. TaxCalc uses a client record to store static information about the client, which is then used to create the tax returns. BEFORE WE START Client Records In order to create a tax return, you need to set up a client record in Client Hub. There are two ways to do this: 1. 2. Import a TaxCalc 2012 tax return. Set up a client from scratch. Please visit our website to find SimpleStep guides on each of the above. TaxCalc 2013 onwards If you have already set up a client during the 2012-2013 tax year, you don’t need to do anything to your client record, you can simply carry on as normal. STEP 1 Log into TaxCalc as the Admin User Open TaxCalc and log into TaxCalc with your user account. STEP 2 Open the Client Hub Application One way of getting to your client record is to find it in the Client Hub application. Click on it to open. STEP 3 Choose your client When the Client Hub application opens, it will look like the screen below. Select your client simply by clicking on it once. What happens if I double click? If you double click on a client’s name in the table, you will open up their detailed record in the database. Here you will find name, address, AML, relationship and other information about them. You can close the client record by clicking on the cross on its tab (just like a web browser). STEP 4 Open the Client in Tax Return Production With the client selected, click on the Open in Tax Return Production command, found on the left hand side of the screen. A window will appear that talks about choosing a tax year. STEP 5 Create a new Tax Return To create a new tax return, click on the New Return button. A new window will pop up, which will look like the screen below. This window allows you to choose the type of tax return that you want to create for the client. With Individuals, you can create SA100 Individual returns and R40 Repayment forms. You can also choose the tax year of the return that you want to create. If a tax return exists for the previous year, you can choose whether you would like to roll forward information. Select Create to create the tax return. STEP 6 Open the Return You will return to the window that shows you the tax returns that have been created for your client. You will see the new tax return in the table of tax returns. The tax return should already be selected but if not, simply click on it once to select it. Click on the Open button to open the tax return. Double clicking on the return will also open it. Once opened, you’ll find TaxCalc works like it always has. Other Ways of Creating and Opening a Tax Return You do not always need to go through Client Hub to create and open a tax return. From the TaxCalc Hub home screen When you have the TaxCalc Hub Home screen open, simply click on the Tax Return Production icon. A window, not too dissimilar from the client list in Client Hub will appear. Select a client from the list and then click on the Continue button. The window will change to show you the tax returns that have been created for this client. You can create a tax return as per Step 5 in this Guide or simply open it to carry on working on the return. Using the Action Buttons Most windows have an Action button, which is the icon that looks like a cog towards the top right of the window. If you click on it, you will see actions that you can perform, which include quickly opening another client, another tax year or opening the client in another TaxCalc application.
