THE COMPETITION MOTORCYCLE CLUB OF W.A. NEXT EVENT SATURDAY APRIL 24 Wanneroo - Round 1 Club Championships Great Collie TT Sidecars action shot from Graeme at Sportpixx.com.au More photos available from his website (and inside here). Graeme always sends the club a selection of photos for free to use on the website and in the mag - greatly appreciated - especially by yours www.historicracing.asn.au April 2016 P.O. BOX 568, SOUTH PERTH W.A. 6951 AFFILIATED WITH MOTORCYCLING WA PRESIDENTS REPORT: 2016 COLLIE TT. - BOB HUMPHREYS After a very wet Friday night, 50 keen riders practiced and fine tuned their machines in atrocious conditions, on the Saturday. Fortunately Sunday dawned fine, and after a few puddles were swept away, the track soon dried up completely. With 61 riders, some with multiple bikes, qualifying went without a hitch, First up in race 1 were the P2 & P3 stalwarts with 4 beautiful P2 bronze age machines, maintained by manufacturing and sourcing parts from every corner of the globe. Only a true enthusiast can keep those bikes on the track, and we weren’t disappointed with their display of daring riding on what must be part of motorcycle history. Two riders were injured, Paul Pickford, concussion, recovered and back at work, and Steve Crane being the other, after disputing territory in the first corner of the 250 P6 production race, Steve hit the tarmac, he rode the rest of the day on his 1000 Honda with two 1st’s and a 2nd. Later on the Monday night he had blood in his urine, and Wife Claire rushed him off to hospital, broken ribs were diagnosed, Steve has only fallen twice in his track career, both on the 1st corner at Collie, now known as Crane Curve!!?? Long time member Bob Hull, recently competed in The Australian Masters Athletic Championships, and came away with an Australian Championship to his name. He also rode his P6 proddy to a 4th place in leg one, at 72 years of age, showing the youngsters how it’s done. He will be competing in the World Masters Athletic Championships later this year! Leigh Boujos was in a class of his own in P6 750 on board his “for sale” Kawasaki. Neville McIntyre was on the beautiful RC 30 Honda giving us the wonderful V4 sound as only RC 30’s can. The P5 250 race could be called the Mercer class! with 3 of the 4 starters being from one family, David taking the spoils and also passengering with “ I’ll ride anything” Mark the main man Ackermans. With Richard Langdon being a rare non starter out with bike problems, the contest for 1st place in the biggest class of the day, P6 production, went to Tony Hynes two 1sts and 2nd. Sidecars were at their most entertaining with Des Harvey having 2nd last ride before retiring. Des and Gary Cushnaham handicapped themselves 15 seconds, and put on a show for the spectators, slicing through the field to two 1st’s and a 2nd on the road, winning his class, only being beaten my Mark Ackermans in one race. Kevin Webb overcame a dose of the flu to take out P4 sidecars with Martyn Dunbar-Stuart in the chair ( See I told you HCMC is posh...double barrelled side car passengers) The Mark Ackermans/David Mercer team won P5 sidecars. Out 1st prestigious Jelly Bean Award went to Steve Crane for crashing and then winning the next race! The Silkolene, Steve’s motorcycles oil draw for class winners, went to John Pitcher, John was riding a beautiful 650 Norton for the first time. The Club BBQ on Saturday night was bigger than Ben Hur. even one of our regular paramedics, Graham asked if he could bring his wife Rose along. A big thanks to Michelle and David Gapes for once again being the BBQ organisers. See you all at the Clubrooms, and at Wanneroo on the 24th April for Round 1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CEC! - MAUREEN HUMPHREYS - Flag Marshal coordinator Cec Sumption, long time sidecar racer and Flag marshal for the club is coming up for his 89th birthday. Cec has marshalled for the club for a number of years, with his best mate Keith Perry. They raced sidecars in the 1950’s, winning the State Championships at Caversham on a Vincent 1000cc in 1957 ( Keith’s very first ride on a sidecar!). Cec had a varied racing career, covering most modes of racing except Speedway. His Mother asked him not to race speedway, and he complied. They have both been coming up regularly to Barbagallo to flag marshall for us. Cec is now down sizing and with his wife is moving to a retirement village. I’m sure there are many stories Cec and his mate Keith, could tell us about the early days of motorcycle racing. The Historic Competition Motorcyle Club of WA, whole heartily thanks Cec Sumption for his contribution to Historic Motorcycle Racing, and assistance to our club, and wish him happy memories in his new home. CONGRATULATIONS TO SAM CLARKE Congratulations to Sam Clarke and his team on their Pole Position, and two out of two wins at Wakefield Park in NSW. This was a round of the Australian Championship. It was Sam’s first visit to the circuit, and to beat the local stars was an achievement. Sam started with HCMC as a junior. and progressed through 125’s, Moto 3, and scored a wild card at Phillip Island GP, and is now riding 600 Supersport. CLASS WINNERS OF THE COLLIE TT 2016. In the September Long weekend 2017 we plan to hold the event in Collie. With the current state of the economy and the downturn in mining Collie has been doing it tough for some time so I would like to try and make the long weekend more of an event that will benefit the Collie community and businesses. What I have in mind is for a range of Vintage and Veteran motorcycle and car clubs to join 200 or so Ulyssians in Collie on the Saturday and Sunday of the long weekend to make it an event that will attract more people to Collie to support local businesses. Each club would be responsible for managing their own members and club activities but we would combine for a number of events such as the Sunday morning parade and display in the Centenary Park area on the main street, and possibly some of your members will join our rides to lunch destinations I have had positive feedback from initial discussions with the Collie Council, Men’s Shed and Railway Museum. The Council has indicated it would consider closing off the main street to enable our vehicles to be displayed to the public and we can hopefully coordinate this with the Sunday morning markets. Hopefully the local Country Music group will join in the festivities Promotion of the event would be best achieved via local media as news items rather than paid advertisements. I also have in mind a gold coin donation by the public to support say RFDS, local St John Ambulance volunteers, or something similar. Part of the Ulysses weekend activities include a number of rides each day via backroads to various locations in the region for morning tea and lunch, and it would be great if some of your members would consider joining us. For safety reasons we will limit the number of vehicles in each group. I also hope to encourage the Vintage and Veteran motorcycle clubs to arrange for a track day at the Collie Motoplex on Sunday - possibly in the afternoon after the morning display and market day in town I am prepared to facilitate the initial kick start for this combined event and assist with overall management if required however as I live in Perth I would appreciate some assistance from one or more people who live in the area to assist with local liaison once we get the ball rolling I would like to strongly encourage your club to consider joining us on this weekend as it will give our members the opportunity to see different vehicles, meet new people, have fun and support Collie. I am sure a great time will be had by all and I hope you and your group will consider this suggestion favourably Once I have some feedback I will arrange a meeting of interested groups in a month or so in Collie If you know of any other similar groups that may be interested in participating please let me know so I can approach them as well. Please feel free to call or email me if you would like to discuss anything further Tony Collins Ulysses Club Inc, Fremantle Branch 2017 Odyssey Coordinator 58 Vincent St Nedlands WA 6009 e: collinschemist@hotmail.com m: 0428-487-805 - Was it wet on the Saturday - you bet!!
