T he Syracuse University football team has faltered against so many of its longtime Big East rivals recently that the names — and the bad memories — start to blend together. Rutgers — 0-4. Pittsburgh — 0-4. West Virginia — 0-7. That’s right. Three teams that went 4-26 vs. Syracuse from 1992-2001 now own the Orange. They are 18-3 against Syracuse over the ensuing seven seasons. The most dominant has been the Mountaineers, who will visit the Carrier Dome at noon Saturday (Time Warner). “For myself, having not been here prior to last December, I never realized that until I started getting ready to play them,” SU coach Doug Marrone said. “To find out that we’ve lost to them for seven straight years hurts me like it hurts everyone else in this room or anyone else who is a Syracuse University fan.” Marrone knows the history of the rivalry, which began in 1945. He is aware of the close relationship between one of his mentors, former SU coach Dick MacPherson, and former WVU coach Don Nehlen. Marrone himself was part of the rivalry, playing offensive tackle for MacPherson after taking a recruiting visit to Morgantown at Nehlen’s invitation. EASY! NOW! Local News 2009TEAM STATISTICS HOWTHEY STACKUP Quarterbacks SU’s Greg Paulus has more yardage but nearly twice as many picks, and WVU’s Jarrett Brown is also a threat to run (201 yards). WVU SU Running backs Noel Devine leads the league in rushing (540 yards) and is one of the game’s most dynamic runners. SU backs are solid. WVU SU Receivers Each team has a star — WVU’s Jock Sanders and SU’s Mike Williams — but Williams (41 catches) has burned brighter lately. Business WVU SU Offensive line WVU’s line does much better at runblocking and has allowed only six sacks in four games. SU’s unit is improving very slowly. WVU SU Defensive line Totally different schemes, but each team’s front is active and aggressive, especially against the run. Art Jones gives SU edge. Politics WVU SU Linebackers Reed Williams’ return from 2008 injury is huge for WVU; he is heart and soul of D. SU linebackers have been a pleasant surprise. WVU SU Secondary It’s all there on: syracuse.com/news Discover the advantage. Post-Standard Media In print and online. SU’s secondary has allowed 13 TD passes in five games. WVU’s bunch is only average but is still more effective than that. WVU SU Special teams Each team has been outstanding in the kicking/punting department. SU gets the edge on kick returns, WVU on punt returns.
