QUARTU
SANT’ELENA
Sardinia is the second largest island in the
Mediterranean sea after Sicily.
Sardinia’s is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt
seas in the Mediterranean, The inland is equally
unspoilt and is unexpectedly vast and fascinating.
The low density of population caused, over the
centuries, the preservation of large inhabited
areas where you can easily find only shepherds
who spend most of the year there.
The island’s highest points are the mountain chain
of Gennargentu, which is only one of the many
mounts enliving the whole landscape. There
are indeed two plains: the Campidano on the
southern part of the Island and the Nurra on the
Northern part.

thousands of red pinnacles that emerge from the
sea: an endless number of picturesque nooks that
form a world apart in the Mediterranean basin.
The Sardinian climate is a typically Mediterranean
one with mild winters and warm summers.
Summer from May to September, with many
summery days in April and October, above all in
the south. Therefore, the Sardinian climate looks
as if it were made for the purpose of tourism, with
very little risk of unexpected rains.
The coastline of Sardinia offers a variety that
cannot be compared with other Italian regions,
with its outstretched majestic rams, wide white
beaches, intimate coves, sheer cliffs where
deep picturesque caves often appear and the

The administrative centre and most important
town in Sardinia grew up around the old district of
Castello, which stands on a hill.
The sightseeing tour of Cagliari can start from the
airy terraces of this district, once the fortifications
of the Pisan and Aragonese overlords; from here
wonderful views may be admired.
To reach Castello one still has to pass the old
medieval gates: it maintains the appearance
of an old fortified town, with its ramparts, its
narrow streets and the two medieval towers of
San Pancrazio and the Elephant, named after the
statue of an elephant, that is well visible outside.
The fine Cathedral in Pisan Romanesque style
with Gothic elements, the terrace of Saint Remy
and the rampart of Santa Croce complete the
charming atmosphere of the old district.
In the same part of the town is the building
housing the old University, founded in 1648, the
Cittadella dei Musei, heart of cultural events in
the town, the Siamese Museum, that house a rich
collection of oriental weapons and objects and

the National Archeological Museum where many
exhibits can be seen, recalling the past civilizations
on the island. Notable amongst these exhibits are
the bronze figures representing different aspects
of life during the Nuraghe period.
There is also an interesting collection of finely
engraved Carthaginian stones and gold and silver
ornaments.
The lower part of the city is out of the walls; here
there are the churches of San Michele, one of
the most important examples of Spanish-Gothic
style in Sardinia, and of Sant’Anna, rebuilt after
the bombardments during the Second World
War. Behind this church there is the church of
Sant’Efisio, to which the most important feast in
the city is consecrated. It takes place in May and
it celebrates the end of the plague in 1656, with
a procession of people wearing the traditional
costumes. The Saint’s statue is taken to Nora on a
coach drawn by oxen.

THE GULF OF CAGLIARI
The Gulf of Cagliari offers the suitable background
to host important and spectacular sailing events.
Poetto is the beach of Cagliari and Quartu S.E.,
with its very fine sand. The southwest limit of the
beach is the characteristic rocky formation known
as the Devil’s Saddle under which there is Marina
Piccola, a little harbour for tourist craft where you
can find the Yacht Club Cagliari, the Lega Navale
Italiana Cagliari and the Windsurfing Club.
From Marina Piccola, logistic base of the Yacht
Club Cagliari and LNI Cagliari to the Quartu
Sant’Elena Sailing Center, in the eastern side of
the coast, the Gulf will become a magnificent race
area and the evolutions of the boats will of course
arouse enthusiasm and admiration for these
young champions.
This background welcomed the first sailors in
the 60’s. From then on the success of the sailing
events organized in Cagliari and, at the same time,
the achievement of the local athletes in national
and international regattas, confirmed the qualities
of the Golfo degli Angeli.
With its morphologic and meteorological
conditions the Golfo degli Angeli it’s the ideal race
area with the almost constant presence of the
wind and the mild climate.

QUARTU SANT’ELENA
Quartu Sant’Elena is of ancient Phoenician and
Roman origins. The mild climate, the fertility of
the land, the abundance of fish in the sea and
the opportunities for wildfowling offered by the
wetlands near Quartu has throughout history
attracted many settlers. The name Quartu derives
from the milestone along the Roman road
connecting Cagliari in the south to Santa Teresa
di Gallura in the north, which passed through the
centre of the town.
Owing to Quartu’s proximity to Cagliari in just a
few years it has grown to become the third largest
town in Sardinia. Despite its rapid growth Quartu
Sant’Elena has succeeded in conserving traditions
that go back a thousand years. Still today, in some
of the oldest quarters of the town, bread is still
made at home industry level and the patience and
love with which sweets in a wide variety of shapes
are decorated is still alive.
Ancient rites are repeated year after year at the
feasts of San Giovanni Battista, Santa Maria and
the town’s patron saint, Sant’Elena. It is on these
occasions that the splendid traditional costumes
of the women are decorated to an incredible
degree with objects in gold filigree produced
by local goldsmiths who keep Quartu’s ancient
tradition in this art alive.
In Quartu one should visit the house-museum
Sa Dom’e Farra, an ancient agricultural house
where thousands of agricultural and household
implements are preserved. Good paintings are
kept in the parish church.
Of notable interest are the twenty-six kilometres
of coast, starting from the beach of Quartu that
faces the Golfo degli Angeli and is a continuation
of Poetto, the beach of Cagliari.
Along the panoramic road to Villasimius a lovely
place to stop is the cove Cala Regina, with its
Spanish tower and the Mari Pintau beach.
The inland Sette Fratelli Park (named from the
seven peaks that rise above it) is characterised
by springs waterfall, gorges and cliffs hidden in
the forest and the Mediterranean scrub which
offer exciting trips in search of the now rare red
deer. The most interesting area for nature-lovers
is the Molentargius wetland where over half of
European birds species are represented. A large
colony of flamingos has been nesting there
since 1993.

JULY IN THE GULF OF CAGLIARI
The extension of the Anticyclone of Azores in the western Mediterranean
sea, determines a levelled high pressures field in the South Sardinia.
The weather is characterized by:
clear sky
sea breeze (10-15 kts)
almost smooth or slight seas
During the statistically rare situations, with the presence of
depressions in proximity of the island, the only important element is
the northwest wind (Mistral) of moderate / strong intensity (10-25 kts)

ASD LEGA NAVALE ITALIANA
SEZ DI CAGLIARI
The Lega Navale is an association with sections all around Italy and develops
its cultural and sporting activities in the environment safeguard and the sport
promotion (especially sailing and rowing). The Lega Navale Italiana Cagliari was
founded in 1902 to spread the love for the sea and the sailor spirit and has been
the first association that diffused sailing in Sardinia. With its 930 members it is
one of the bigger sections in Italy. It has two headquarters: Su Siccu harbour,
with more than 300 boats up to 20 metres and Marina Piccola, next to the Yacht
Club Cagliari, logistic base of the sailing school (Optimist, 420)
SAILING EVENTS

SEZ DI CARLOFORTE
The logistic base of the Lega Navale Italiana Carloforte is in the little island
of San Pietro, in the south-western coast of Sardinia. It was founded in 1993
and applied to the Italian Sailing Federation in 1994. The managing staff has
a remarkable experience in regattas organization; the activity of the section
is possible also thanks to the precious cooperation of the Technical Nautical
Institute of Carloforte that, in case of need, put its structures and equipments
at the disposal of the Lega Navale Italiana. The LNI works for the youth sailing
activity development in southwest Sardinia and some of its athletes achieved
considerable results. The LNI Carloforte cooperates in the organization of the
International Regatta “La route du jasmin” Tolone-Carloforte-Biserta.

greater experience and better equipment,
the Club applied to the F.I.V. (Italian Sailing
Federation) and obtained permission to host their
first national regattas.
In the meantime the Club’s own crews were
increasingly competing in regattas in mainland
Italy and abroad. Finally in the 1980’s the
Club was able to prove its organizing abilities
when it hosted the Flying Dutchman World
Championship.
The hard work carried out by the managing staff
was amply rewarded in 1981-82, when the Yacht
The Yacht Club Cagliari is situated in the Marina
Piccola port, very close to the beautiful Poetto
beach and 5 km. far from the centre of the city.
The Club was founded in 1964 by a group of
boating and sailing enthusiasts with the intention
of promoting competitive sailing, which until then
had not been developed in any way in Cagliari.
During the first few years, the Club concentrated
mainly on regional sailing regattas for the Flying
Junior, Flying Dutchman, Ponant and “S” classes.
Later on, during the 70’s, the 420 and 470 classes
were added along with sailboards. Having now

Sardinian leading Club both in the regattas
organization and in the number of competitions
won by its crews through the years. The reason
for this is to be found both in the capacity of the
management staff and in the ideal conditions
of the Poetto sea, regarded by many specialists
as a really optimal stage for any kind of regatta,
offering rare advantages: the wind, always present
and strong, a natural position sheltered from
rough weather conditions, an average depth of
about 30/35 mt. facilitating any possible change
of course during the races.
Club Cagliari gained the top place in the F.I.V. for
the number and quality of competitions won by
its crews.
As time went on, the Yacht Club Cagliari has
intensified more and more its sport activities both
in the Sailing School and in the organization of
important sailing events.
In 1995 the Yacht Club Cagliari received an
important prize: it was in the top ten of a special
classification of the best Yacht Club of Italy, drawn
up by the Yacht Digest review.
Today the Yacht Club Cagliari is indeed the
