One of ISS’ core values is Responsibility. Indifference is immoral; we care about what we do and how we do it. It is important that we all make a contribution to ISS’ efforts to become more environmentally friendly, because every action can make a significant difference. On this note, I am proud to announce that this edition of the ISSue magazine is the first green issue we will publish, and all future editions will be carbon neutral. As you will see on page 11, we have started using the services of Finsbury Green, Australia’s most environmentally conscientious printing firm. In the future, the Finsbury Green and Forrest Stewardship Council logos will be displayed on the ISSue, identifying the ISSue as one of the most environmentally sound publications within Australia. ISS continues to enact its vision of “leading Facility Services globally through leading Facility Services locally”. To this end, ISS has maintained its commitment to strengthen its support of the Facility Management Association (FMA) of Australia in addition to other international FMA affiliates. In October, 2008, ISS USA in conjunction with ISS headquarters (Denmark) sponsored the closing keynote speaker at the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) conference in Dallas, Texas. Jørgen Lindegaard, ISS Group CEO, was also invited to give a presentation on the ISS story, and its vision. This support from the highest level of ISS clearly demonstrates the importance of local and global leadership in the area of Facility Services, and I encourage you to read further on page 9. 11 Community Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility and I encourage everyone in ISS to get involved in meeting our OH&S duties, and ensure that we continue to keep people safe. 13 Global News At this point I would also like to mention a very exciting contract win for ISS. The Royal North Shore Hospital Public Private Partnership (PPP), New South Wale’s largest health PPP to date, has been awarded to InfraShore, the consortium which ISS is a member of. This is an exceptionally positive outcome for the company, and reflects strongly on every member of the team involved in this project. Further details of this achievement are on page 3. The future RNSH Over the coming years, all “soft services” within the redevelopment of Royal North Shore Hospital will be run and operated by ISS. This will include the full range of cleaning, catering, ward support, security, property services and grounds maintenance, as well as several other services, necessary to operate the 626 bed Acute Hospital and its 28 operating suites. Charles Blinkworth, ISS CEO, said that, “Our selection for the Royal North Shore Hospital PPP demonstrates not only our ability to provide the highest level of service to the health sector, but our capacity to partner with even the largest of clients and meet their needs over any period of time”. John Della Bosca, New South Wales Minister for Health, said that, “The Royal North Shore Hospital redevelopment follows a detailed review of designs and extensive consultation with clinical and health staff. The redevelopment will maintain and enhance the Hospital’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading health care facilities”. “It’s a terrific example of working with the private sector to deliver brand new state-of- the-art health facilities for the best possible price,” he added. The awards, voted by more than 8 million passengers at over 190 airports worldwide, cover 40 categories including facilities, cleanliness, security, efficiency and customer service. “Of the 40 categories, we are particularly pleased to have been voted so highly in the friendliness of our staff and the efficiency of our security processes,” said Brisbane Airport Corporate Managing Director and CEO Koen Rooijmans. “In the complex post-September 11 environment and in an airport that services such an important tourism economy, getting this balance right is a key priority for Brisbane,” continued Koen. He added that, “We have previously been voted the best privatized airport in the world by the airlines, which was quite an honour, and this Skytrax award is very satisfying too, because it is voted by the people who really matter – the passengers”. Cover Image: Sujan Khadka working at the Apple Store on George Street, Sydney, Australia 3 CLEANROOM SERVICES APPLE APPLE PARTNERS WITH ISS ISS holds the cleaning and maintenance contracts for all three of the Apple stores in Australia ON JUNE 21ST, 2008, SYDNEY RESIDENTS turned out in droves for their first peek at the Southern Hemisphere’s first Apple store. The 3 metre tall Apple logo, massive windowed store-front and iconic glass staircase all heightened the excitement of the store’s grand night-time opening. Part of an Apple store’s appeal is the aesthetics; smooth clean lines, transparent glass wherever practical, and a general vibe of enthusiastic professionalism and passion for the brand. Maintaining this look and feel throughout the 3 levels of the George Street store requires an equally enthusiastic and passionate cleaning and maintenance team, and ISS is proud to deliver on this front. PHARMACEUTICAL CLEANROOM SERVICES Some people think they are very picky about having a clean office. They should meet our clean-room staff BY SIMPLY WALKING AROUND, the human body can generate 5 to 10 million skin, hair, dirt and clothing particles every minute. If you are working in a particle sensitive environment even a microscopic speck less than .001 the length of a millimetre, a measurement called a “micron”, could contain microscopic bacteria (or “microbes”) that compromise the products being made. People are the highest risk of contamination for a clean-room To make sure this does not happen, a special facility called a “clean-room” is required. For the past 32 years ISS/Pharmaclean has been providing clean-room cleaning services for pharmaceutical companies, 4 JAN – MAR 2009 including GlaxoSmithKline, CSL, David Bull Laboratories, International Drug Technology, F H Faulding, Mayne Pharma and Hospira, all of whom have supplied pharmaceutical products to world markets. Clean-rooms are graded according to an international standard, called ISO 14644-1, with a range of classes identifying the cleanliness of the air and surfaces. For example, ISO class 5 cleanrooms require 20 or less 5 micron size particles per cubic metre of air and effectively zero microbes. 1 micron is .001 of a millimetre What does that all mean? If seating at the Melbourne Cricket Ground of about 100,000 seats represents the total space of a cubic metre and each person represents a micron, only 10 people would be allowed in to watch each match. 5 to 10 million skin particles a minute “We have to be absolutely meticulous in the clean-rooms. In a normal office setting, missing a spot on a shelf might mean a slight build up of dust without risk to the office worker. For clean-rooms, not completing the job correctly could put at risk an entire batch of critical care products,” said Peter Maher, ISS/Pharmaclean Cleaning & Sanitation Manager. Following ISS Australia’s success with Apple, ISS China has also acquired the services contract for Apple’s Flagship Beijing store. In order to ensure the cleanroom environment passes rigorous microbial testing, ISS clean-room cleaners must complete a 12 month training program before beginning work in a clean-room. Additionally, they must “re-validate” this training every 6 months, and no jewellery, makeup or street clothes can be worn during the cleaning process, only special non-shedding, sterile clean-room uniforms are permitted. 5 GROUNDS IT REMOTE SECTOR GROCERY SHOPPING IN A REMOTE ISS TOWNSHIP As part of the Rio Tinto contract, ISS manages the township of Pannawonica, including its supermarket FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES may not be the first things that come to mind when talking about a remote mining town. But for Margaret Thomas, ISS Mart Manager, Pannawonica, it is one of the key factors involved in maintaining a successful operation. Twice weekly deliveries “We have 2 deliveries from Perth each week, over 1,500 kilometres away, and fresh produce is one of the quickest selling product categories,” said Margaret. “I’ve been in Pannawonica for over 12 years, and we have definitely seen an improvement in the quality over the years. When the town was first founded, all produce trucked in was frozen”. The supermarket in Pannawonica has been in place for about 35 years, roughly the same time as Pannawonica was founded. However, in order to successfully run a supermarket in such a remote location, where it is not uncommon for a curious snake to slither in, or to find kangaroos grazing the front lawn in the mornings, a core of dedicated staff is vital. Over 1,500 kms from Perth Most of the 15 employees for the supermarket are locals and apart from the rigorous inductions and medical examinations, to the same standards as mine staff, each staff member is multi-skilled so that if somebody comes down sick there are several back ups available. “The busiest times of the year are the Rodeo Weekend, Christmas and Easter, and whenever there is a threat of a cyclone, and it is during these times the team really puts in the extra hours and pulls together,” Margaret said. The team hails from a wide variety of backgrounds, including a tennis coach, flight attendant, resort manager, and a musician from a Swiss band. Dampier ISS’ PARTNERSHIP WITH MESSAGELABS Wickham Village KARRATHA Pannawonica Village E-mail filtering technology has significantly improved ISS’ network speed and accuracy E-MAIL IS ONE OF THE GREATEST INNOVATIONS in business history. However, this time saving and convenient tool has had at least one major drawback in the form of “Spam” or “Junk” E-mail. Approx 1500 kms Liz Phillips 6 JAN – MAR 2009 PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA Less than 3 in a million E-mails misidentified Before ISS began work with MessageLabs, the 600 E-mail users throughout ISS could receive up to 40 Spam E-mails every day. Efforts to counter these nuisance E-mails took up a lot of time, required the development of 200 software “rules” for identifying which E-mails were Spam, and ultimately slowed the entire network. On top of this a lot of genuine client E-mails were being misidentified as junk. MessageLabs is a multinational company which specialises in E-mail and web content filtering. In short, they are specialists at identifying which E-mails are Spam, what viruses might be contained in incoming E-mails, and ensuring the security of inbound and outbound E-mails. Since ISS started using MessageLabs for its E-mail filtering services, the number of misidentified E-mails has dropped to less than 3 in a million, there has been a virtual 100% reduction in Spam, and a guarantee of protection from 100% of E-mail based viruses is in place. 2.5 billion E-mails every day “Our experience with MessageLabs has always been excellent. The service has improved productivity for ISS users, reduced the time required to manage the E-mail system and markedly improved our E-mail and web security,” said ISS Group IT Manager, Roger Burgess. “Since changing to MessageLabs, there has virtually been a 100% reduction in spam, and we can ensure employees access only safe and appropriate web content,” added Roger. Virtually 100% reduction in Spam MessageLabs manages more than 2 billion E-mails and 1 billion web requests each day. This renewed involvement will see ISS support numerous FMA Australia events, including a range of keynote speeches, industry forums and presentations, site visits and networking events. 2,000 members in Australia, 19,000 internationally ISS FACILITY SERVICES HAS BECOME THE FIRST truly national contract cleaning company to sign a Collective Agreement to cover every State and Territory in Australia. This landmark agreement was achieved after months of negotiating with the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union (LHMU). “This is a significant commitment to raising the profile of our Cleaning teams,” said Darryl Prince, ISS Human Resources Director, “and is the culmination of months of work by the negotiating teams on both sides of the table, which included staff and supervisors from across Australia”. 137,000 members “It also honours the commitment ISS made to the LHMU more than two years ago, when we were the first in the cleaning industry to formally sign as a Responsible Contractor with the LHMU,” Darryl added. LHMU National Secretary, Louise Tarrant described this development as a milestone in the industry. Louise said, “On behalf of cleaners around Australia the LHMU congratulates ISS for the industry leadership they have shown by being the first national contractor to sign onto the Clean Start Collective Agreement”. “Raise not only the terms and conditions of our workforce, but the standards of the industry as a whole” “Cleaners on ISS managed sites are especially delighted because ISS’ commitment to the Agreement means they will be among the first to move to the new standards. We look forward to working productively with ISS to build contract cleaning into an industry of which we can all be proud,” continued Louise. FMA Australia currently has around 2,000 members across Australia within the Facility Services (FS) sectors. In addition to staging a variety of FM related events, FMA Australia has developed a Facility Management Accreditation System (FMAS), offering professional development courses which can assist with job seeking within the industry. The ISS Booth at IFMA World Workplace 2008 in Dallas, Texas, USA 8 JAN – MAR 2009 9 HR COMMUNITY ISSUE GOES GREEN WITH FINSBURY GREEN The ISSue is now manufactured by Australia’s most environmentally conscious and awarded printer INDIGENOUS WORK TRANSITION PROGRAM ISS has been engaging with Indigenous Communities and Rio Tinto to run a “work transition” program in the Pilbara region of Western Australia ISS IS PROUD AND PRIVILEGED to have joined forces with Rio Tinto and Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation to host a “work transition” program for a team of 12 Aboriginal people from Onslow in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. 12 Indigenous participants ISS has worked very closely behind the scenes with Rio Tinto and Skilled Group (WA) to finetune arrangements for hosting the team over 3 months in real and meaningful entry level roles in Pannawonica Township. Each participant has been placed into their preferred role, ranging from shifts in catering, cleaning and landscaping, through to administration and supermarket operations. To facilitate this personalised development approach, the 12-person team has been divided into 2 crews, each of which works a four-day-on, four-day-off / drive-in, drive-out roster. Currently, each participant is undertaking a daily round trip of approximately 400 kilometres to get to and from work, but will soon have access to accommodation in Pannawonica. An official Community Launch of the program was held on the evening of 30th October at Onslow, where all project partners gathered with participants, their families and friends to recognise and celebrate their achievements to date, and wish them well in the next stage of their journey. in the regions in which we operate, and to providing sustainable employment and career development opportunities for Indigenous people across all areas of our operations”. ANY COMPANY WHICH HAS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT HIGH ON ITS LIST of priorities has realised the need to develop sustainable business practices. As part of ISS’ focus on meeting its environmental responsibilities, the ISSue magazine is now being printed by Finsbury Green, Australia’s first carbon neutral printer. Finsbury Green is one of Australia’s most awarded printers, with more than 369 print awards over the past 21 years. “ISS is proud to be partnering in this initiative, and totally committed to ensuring permanent employment outcomes for program participants at the earliest opportunity,” commented Ray McColl, ISS National Manager Indigenous Development and Employment. Saving over 1 tonne of CO2 emissions Ray continued, “The ISS team at Pannawonica is to be commended for its unwavering support and enthusiasm for the project, and its flexible approach to supporting the success of each participant. Such an initiative directly aligns with our commitments to building positive relationships with Indigenous communities Switching to using Finsbury Green will allow ISS to save over 1 tonne of carbon dioxide emissions every year. And while some people have questioned how environmentally friendly it is to print the ISSue magazine, Finsbury Green has identified some very interesting facts about how carbon friendly offset printing can be. For example, printing a 700 page report* 10 JAN – MAR 2009 will generate a total of 85 grams of CO2. After printing, no further CO2 emissions are required. On the other hand, reading the same report online for 1 hour produces 226 grams of CO2. Reducing CO2, without compromising quality This amount increases significantly if the reader prints parts of the report with a laser printer. It has been estimated that one single colour A4 page printed on a laser printer causes the same CO2 emissions as 100 A4 pages printed double sided through a company like Finsbury Green**. Finsbury Green’s Environmental and Technical Manager, Rodney Wade stated, “I think companies are becoming more aware of the need to consider the environmental impacts and business decisions they make. However, not all companies realise that the best environmental solution is not always the most obvious. We’re very pleased that ISS has been willing to examine the facts on CO2 emissions of electronic versus printed media”. Independently certify the ISSue as Carbon Neutral “The ISSue team has always been very aware of its environmental footprint,” said Monika Sobota, ISS’ National Communications Manager. “To be able to reduce our impact, and without affecting the quality of our publication, is an opportunity that we were more than happy to take advantage of,” she added. Over 38% of all Australia’s container trade enters or leaves the Port of Melbourne through the 34 commercial berths spread across 5 major docks. 38% of all Australia’s container trade The strategic importance of this port facility is significant, and an appropriate level of security is required to ensure that the 3,200 ships using the port each year are able to dock, load and unload without hazard. That level of security is provided by ISS. With a strong reputation within the security industry, and an elite management team based in Victoria, ISS has been chosen by the Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC), 12 JAN – MAR 2009 the organisation responsible for the port’s operation, to provide a range of services over the next 3 years. 3,200 ships per year Rod added that, “In any one day, we may need to be in contact with the PoMC, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Port of Melbourne Shipping Management Centre, Port of Melbourne Health and Safety staff, Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, Customs and Immigration as well as State and Federal law enforcement agencies”. In addition to mobile patrols, maritime guarding and screening services, ISS also utilises water patrols throughout the 100 nautical miles of shipping channels, explosive trace detection with dog handler teams and numerous other services, all of which are coordinated through the ISS operated Control Room. 100 nautical miles of shipping channels “The PoMC Security Service is quite diverse, and there is a significant amount of interaction required between a range of stakeholders. Coordination, both through the Control Room and on a corporate level, is crucial,” said Rod Anderson, ISS Security National Business Manager. The Port of Melbourne operates 24 hours a day, dealing with 42 container shipping lines, and the services that the capable and flexible ISS Security team provide are vital to its ongoing secure operation. Denmark In ISS’ home country, ISS provides reception and washroom services, as well as Tele and Computer cleaning services. Furthermore, ISS Denmark also provides catering services for Carlsberg, the company which holds the license to bottle all Coca Cola brands in Denmark. Spain ISS Spain has an extensive relationship with Coca Cola, working on over 17 separate sites throughout the country. In addition to standardised cleaning and window cleaning services, ISS Spain also provides specialised food cleaning services as well as engaging in significant industrial maintenance for the sites. Including cleaning services, industrial cleaning, catering services, pest management and the operation of a lease plant, this contract represents one of the more varied contracts that ISS holds with Coca Cola. Indonesia Coca Cola has a strong presence in one of Australia’s closest neighbours. ISS Indonesia provides a variety of services for Coca Cola, including cleaning, washroom services and also providing staff to work as packing operators. In addition, SITA also provides services to over 800,000 Australian households each week. Australian Institute of Sports > ISS will provide washroom – sanitary and nappy services for SITA’s Melbourne operations over the next 2 years. This relationship was the result of a crosssell opportunity developed with ISS’ Integrated Facility Services division, and after difficult negotiations was secured without needing to go to tender. > Over at least the next 3 years, ISS Security will provide guarding services, mobile patrols and alarm monitoring for the AIS. These services will be provided in the primary Australian Capital Territory facility, as well as in additional sites in Sydney and on the Gold Coast. > With approximately 26,000 annual enrolments and some 550 staff, the Gordon Institute of TAFE in Victoria is a significant facility. Comprised of 25 buildings across 3 campuses, this TAFE covers over 50,000 square metres. > ISS is providing full cleaning services for classrooms, offices, hallways, kitchenettes, commercial kitchens, restaurants and bathrooms. The contract covers the Campuses of Geelong City, East Geelong and Colac, as well as one additional residence. Trinity College > With 2,800 students, Trinity College is South Australia’s largest school, and has several sites throughout the state including the STARplex. The STARplex centre boasts a four court stadium, two indoor swimming pools, full gymnasium, café, a first class theatre and various conference rooms. The facility also offers numerous sports, training, arts and recreation services in a unique mix of quality facilities under the one roof. > ISS provides cleaning services to the Trinity College sites of Montessori Preschool, Trinity College Senior School, North School and South School, Blakeview School, Gawler River School and the STARplex. 14 JAN – MAR 2009 Parliament House > Parliament House is arguably the most identifiable and critical of buildings which house the Australian Government. With its prime position on Lake Burley Griffin, and with its iconic grass “roof” and towering flagpole, Parliament House is the most recognizable facility of the Australian political system. > ISS now provides pest control services for the entirety of Parliament House. The contract requires a high degree of flexibility due to the national security requirements and availability of set areas on a day to day basis, but through ongoing consultation with the client ISS Pest Control will deliver the highest standard of service for Australia’s greatest political facility. > The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) is Australia’s pinnacle sports research and training facility. Elite athletes from across Australia train in one of 35 AIS sports programs, covering 26 different sports, and are provided with world class support and coaching from the AIS staff. INTEGRATED FACILITY SERVICES Swan TAFE > Swan TAFE is the largest publicly funded provider of vocational education and training in Western Australia. With more than 30,000 students, pursuing over 300 different qualifications, Swan TAFE’s 5 major campuses offer flexible, quality training to their clients. > Swan TAFE has awarded the catering contract for all 5 major campuses to ISS. Previously, ISS managed 2 campuses, with 1 campus managed by a competitor and 2 others managed in-house. MORE THAN 50% OF PEOPLE KEEP THEIR OLD MOBILE PHONES. This has resulted in approximately 16 million old mobile phones stored in homes and offices across Australia, and at least 4 million of these are no longer in use. There is a much better alternative than simply storing an old mobile phone. Over 90% of all materials used in mobile phones are recoverable, and to help you recycle your old mobile phones ISS has partnered with MobileMuster, Australia’s leading mobile phone recycling company. 3.5 million handsets recycled since 1999 You can recycle your old mobiles by either using the satchel enclosed in this magazine (additional satchels are available for free from Australia Post) or by handing them in at any one of the 3,200 MobileMuster collection points across Australia. These include Nokia Care and Motorola Service One Centres; mobile phone retailers Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, 3 Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Crazy Johns, Fone Zone, Allphones; participating local councils; Cartridge World stores; and ANZ bank branches. Over 90% of mobile phone materials are recoverable To give you an idea of how much of an impact recycling a mobile can make, recycling 1 tonne of circuit boards from mobile phones gives the same amount of precious metals as 110 tonnes of gold ore, 123 tonnes of silver bearing ore, and 11 tonnes of copper sulphide ore. Since the recycling program was initiated in 1999, MobileMuster has collected 499 tonnes of mobile phone handsets, batteries and accessories for recycling. This equates to 3.5 million handsets and batteries and over 236 tonnes of accessories.
