On Tuesday, Farrer Primary held their school Rostrum final. I was extremely proud of the excellent speeches presented and the way in which our students appropriately addressed their audience and used speaking techniques to engage and impress the audience. We would like to congratulate Erin McKinley and Tilly Andrews from Year 3, Harry Nielsen and Jessica Tonna from Year 4, Sophia Rutledge and Hayden Steele from Year 5 and Ziggy Marin and Madison Sargeant from Year 6 who represented their classes. They all presented fabulous speeches and were fantastic representatives for their classes. Jessica Tonna was chosen as our school winner and will be representing Farrer Primary at the quarter finals later in the term. Sophia Rutledge is our runner up. Congratulations Jessica and Sophia! TUGGERANONG CROSS COUNTRY On Monday, the following students represented Farrer Primary at the Tuggeranong Cross Country. All the students did such a wonderful job and were great ambassadors for the school. Particular congratulations to the students who qualified for the ACT carnival on the 6th of June. Students and staff from Kindergarten to Year 6 will participate in a range of track, field and novelty events. We welcome the participation of parents as spectators and thank those parents who may volunteer their time to act as officials for the day. Students are reminded to wear their house colours and the canteen will be available on the day. We are still looking for volunteers to help with the canteen and with marshalling events. Please contact the school if you are available to assist on the day. CAR PARK SAFETY For the safety of all our students, we would like to remind parents to please drive carefully around our school particularly at drop off and pick up times. We have had a number of cars parked in ‘No Stopping’ and on our grass island areas, including right near our school crossing which makes it difficult for our children to cross with safety. We urge all drivers to park only in allocated parking areas around the school and take care at the school crossing. Watch out for children STUDENT SUCCESS Parliament of Youth – Radio interview Congratulations to our year 6 student, Amanda Chek, who participated in a radio interview about her role in our school’s Parliament of Youth team last Friday. Amanda discussed her team’s idea to reduce Canberra’s ecological footprint with the presenter, along with a student from a high school, Harleen. The interview was on 'Voice of the Valley', FM 89.5. Amanda and Harleen spoke with confidence and clearly explained their teams’ ideas. Apparently the radio station’s social media was inundated with messages praising the girl’s eloquence. The interviewer has asked if the girls can come back after the event, on the 30th May, to discuss how their presentations went. Well done Amanda! UPGRADE TO OUR PLAYGROUND As many of you are aware our playground surface is very uneven on the basketball court and Ellyard areas. We are relaying a new surface in both these areas and work will begin next Saturday. Please ensure students do not enter the fenced off areas. Once work is completed we will be line marking the basketball court and adding some handball squares for students to enjoy. One of our parents has volunteered his skills to upgrade our preschool with some paving artwork and we thank him and look forward to this wonderful addition to our Preschool environment. YEAR 6 VISIT TO MELROSE Our Year 6 students visited Melrose High School yesterday to experience a day in the life of a high school student. They all had a wonderful time and even had some hands on learning. QUALITY WORK I would like to acknowledge and congratulate the following students on their quality work this week:‐ KH Alister M ‐ Excellent Reading William, Ruby and Ella – Fantastic writing 1R/O Hunter O – Fantastic writing 4Q Ishita, Luke and Charlotte – Wonderful descriptions for scene setting Have a wonderful week Linda Heath Principal Learning, Teaching & Student Engagement Ride or Walk to School Program Today all students have received a refreshed map of Farrer to take home which outlines suggested cycle and walk routes to school. Research indicates that students who regularly choose active transport as a means to get to and from school are more engaged in their learning. We encourage as many students as possible to ride or walk to school each day or if parents need to drive their children, to drop them at a suggested ‘part way drop off point’ which is outlined on the map. This helps our kids to be active and reduces car park congestion around the school. Our bike program continues to be a huge success with many students now able to ride a bike that previously couldn’t. A big thank you to Jo Laver and Andrew Steel for their continued support with the maintenance of our bikes and Jodie Cochrane for the coordination of the Ride or Walk to School program. Farrer P&C news A short message this week to ask families to please fill out and return the P&C contact and parent representative form that was sent home with your child. We’d love to build the informal P&C network but we are unable to do this unless you OPT IN to being part of the conversation. Another great way to get in touch with us is at pandcfarrer@gmail.com. Ideas and offers of help are still welcome for the next disco; planning is underway! See next week’s newsletter for a ‘save the date’ and a call for helpers. A huge thanks to those who wish to purchase an Entertainment Book through the school for an excellent fundraising margin. If you would prefer a digital membership, just return your book to the front office and follow the payment link provided with the book to purchase a digital copy instead. If you choose not to purchase a book please return yours, in the packaging provided to the front office so they can be marked off and sent back to the company. For anyone interested in broader P&C policy, communication and education issues, the next ACT P&C Council General Meeting is at 7pm Tuesday 24 May and commences with a presentation on cyber bullying and safety. THE KIDS’ KITCHEN your School Canteen News from ATHLETICS CARNIVAL WEEK 6 – WEDNESDAY 1ST JUNE Last week you received your order form for this year’s athletics carnival. Please note all orders must be returned to your teachers by FRIDAY 27TH MAY for collation and ordering. This year attending families can also place orders via the order form (or online) just note the “FAMILY” instead of your child’s class! Please use a separate form and spares are available at the front office or please copy at home. The athletics carnival meal deal tends to have the largest response each year with over 200 orders being placed. This means Gemma and I need your help! If you are able to assist we’d would appreciate it, below are the allocated times when we need helpers. This roster will be updated each week leading up to the carnival. BAKING FOR SALE AT SPORTS CARNIVAL This is the one event that we ask for sweet or savoury donations to sell over the counter. We are giving plenty of notice so over the next few weeks when baking for your family you can make a little extra and store in the freezer for convenience. If you are not a baker we are happy to accept cupcakes/lamingtons/slices etc. from the supermarket (woollies, Aldi, Costco etc.), this is our term treat day so let’s go crazy and of course the kids LOVE IT!
