FROM MY HEART From My Heart, This sermon series is challenging. How do we who are limited and unknowing understand the unlimited and all knowing? How does the finite mind of man discuss and contemplate the infinite mind of God? Everything that we could say or think about God – He is infinitely greater than! I feel like a blind man describing Michelangelo’s masterpieces. God is indescribable and incomprehensible to our human minds…so why do we study the nature and essence of God? Why frustrate ourselves in attempting to grasp the infinite? I have been asking myself these questions. But I am sure there is great value in meditating and pondering on our great God. Just filling our minds with thoughts about the majesty, beauty, and glory of God has uplifting spiritual properties. And to have the boldness and courage to STOP thinking about ourselves for a change is, to say the least, refreshing and liberating! Paul encouraged us to think about true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent and praiseworthy things. Just thinking about God honoring things can lift our spirits and give up a proper perspective. Surely thinking on the nature and essence of God is on the top of that list and affects our life perspective as well. But there are some I am sure that do nothing but think on the nature of God, but do so from a purely academic framework. Their agenda is to educate themselves on theology. Now that is a fine goal and I have certainly benefited from theological academics; but I do not think that is the God’s supreme intention for learning about Him…so why this series? I believe there are two primary reasons that cause me to press forward in this pursuit. I want to worship Him rightly. I do not want to worship a god of my own creation and thereby become guilty of idolatry. The I AM changes who I am. The more I pursue a biblical understanding of God, the more the HOLY SPIRIT transforms me into Jesus’ character and nature. Join us each Sunday as we discover the God of the Bible – I AM. For His glory and His Church Bro Jeff “A Mighty Fortress,” the hymn written by Protestant reformer Martin Luther in 1529, is powerful in English but even better in its original German. Historian Michael Streich notes that Luther compares God not only to a fortress but to a completely secure stronghold, or Feste Burg. “A burg was a fortified town,” Streich says. “When invaders approached, the surrounding populace fled to the safety of the walls” — sometimes to layers of walls within walls. Luther’s hymn compares God to the most powerful of all burgs, with eternally unbreakable walls. When we need a place of refuge, God offers his Mighty Fortress, his Feste Burg. Within this refuge, with our value based on our relationship to God rather than on earthly achievements, we’ll never be put to shame. Inside this fortified town, the God who desires an eternal relationship with us delivers, rescues and saves us. —Homiletics At Calvary we are all excited about the renovation of the gym. This small poem reminds us of a greater renovation project that we should be concerned about. What are some of the things in our lives that need to be fixed, restored or renovated. Ask the Lord to “fix my inner core.” Renovate me, precious Lord. I turned from you and just ignored your plan for me to be restored. Without your love, I sink, not soar, so change and fix my inner core. Renovate me, precious Lord. —MaryAnn Sundby CALVARY BAPTIST CALLER 4605 West Ely Road, Hannibal, MO 63401 SUNDAY OFFICE HOURS 8:00am - 4:30pm Band Rehearsal— 8:00 AM Sunday School—9:15 am Worship Service—10:30 am KidzQuest 2—5:45pm LifeGroups—6:00pm Monthly Volume 21 WEDNESDAY Wed Nite Meal (not summer) 5:00pm FamilyQuest (not summer) 6:00pm Bible Study 6:00pm Youth Mtg. 6:00pm GriefShare 6:00pm Choir Rehearsal 7:00pm 1, 2014 PASTOROctober -JEFF ANDERSON Issue 3 Education Minister –Ron Haye Worship Pastor—Joshua Tanner Youth Minister—Dustin Gilbert Children’s Minister—Doug Merrell Daycare Director—Jill McCloud Be prepared and be ready E to be involved in Calvary’s COR evangelist weekend October 24-26. for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? Your Are Invited Nelsonville Baptist Annual Trail Ride Saturday, October 11 10AM Horse Drawn Wagons Amish Doughnuts and Apple Cider Hot Dog roast after the trail ride for lunch Guest speaker is Charlotte Parrish aka “Nanna Anna” Nelsonville Baptist Church pastor is Mark McPike Ladies Ministry is still moving forward without an official leader. We want all ladies to know that we are here for you and want to meet your needs the best we can. We hope to have a new leader and a Ladies ministry team in place by the first of 2015. Be thinking about what you want Calvary’s Ladies Ministry to look like and involved in. Also where do you want to be plugged in? What Bible studies would you like to see for our ladies? We value your input and are anxious to involve you in some aspect of this ministry. I am planning to have a Ladies Ministry Brunch again in January 2015 to hear from you as to what you feel is needed in our Ministry. Be in prayer that God will direct this ministry in the way that He wants it to go. I don’t have a specific date yet for our brunch but I hope that you will attend and that you will bring your ideas, hope and dreams with you. Look for the Ladies Ministry Survey which will be available at the Ladies Ministry table in the Foyer around October 19 th. I cannot believe that I am already writing my article for October. The years keep flying by faster and faster. That reminds me that I must not stress about things out of my control. It reminds me that I should not spend too much time on the trivial things that won’t last but I should focus on that which is eternal. Matthew 6:20 tell us to store up treasures in heaven. I need to focus my time on people not problems. So that gets me thinking about where my time is spent. What treasures am I chasing? Matthew 6:21 says, that where my treasure is, my heart will be also. In the busyness of the holiday seasons that are fast approaching, I pray that we will all spend time on the eternal treasures, each other. I pray as we have the evangelism meeting at the end of this month that we will work hard to get people here with the prayer that more treasures will be added to the Kingdom. The more we invest, the more we love, the more we serve, the more God is glorified. Here is what the worship teams will be up to this month. Oct 3rd – Orchestra is playing for the pastor’s conference here at Calvary Oct. 12th – Heritage Hymn Fest at HLGU – 3pm Oct. 24-26th – Evangelism Revival It is also not too late to join choir. We are just getting started on Christmas music. We also still need lots and lots of people to help out in various ways for next Easter. If you are interested in helping with make-up, props, set, costumes, being in the play, or any other way please let us know. In Christ Alone Joshua Tanner Our Afterschool Adventures TREASURE YOUR PRAYERS & YOUR HELP ...we meet each Wednesday to reach our to our neighbors in the apartments on Centerville Road..want to help??? Call Jennifer at 822-5682 or Heather at 795-7691 Heather (McSmith) THOUGHT OF A UNIQUE WAY TO HELP….her Birthday is coming .She thought you might want to celebrate it with her by donating toward the purchase of bibles for the After School Adventure Ministry Here is how you can do it! (Heather Says…..) I want to use my birthday to raise the funds to purchase The Big Picture Interactive Bible. for each of our Afterschool Adventures kids. I am hoping that I can get 36 people to donate $36 each in order to purchase 36 Bibles. This would allow us to have extra Bibles for any new students or any parents who may decide they want their own Bible. (And, it helps keep the "36" theme!) Even more exciting, I have a sweet friend who is going to donate 1 Bible for every 2 we raise funds for during this time. So, from now until Oct. 20, I am hoping to raise enough money to buy at least 36 Bibles. Then, on my birthday, Oct. 29, I'll be able to gather some friends and pray over these Bibles that will go to our sweet Afterschool kiddos. I know that's a lot of money and I know many people reading this probably don't know me or the kids who will get these Bibles, but I pray you will still be moved to help me reach the "least of these" here in my community with His word. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can mark your offering envelope “Afterschool Adventure Bible” or give directly to Heather. HAPPY BIRTHDAY HEATHER!!! It’s that time again to get ready for Trunk or Treat. It is Friday October 31st, 5:30 to 7:30. Come and join the fun. We will have the opportunity to meet and talk to many families from our neighborhood and community. I can’t think of any other time that we will have this many people coming onto our church grounds, and we need to be willing and prepared to great our guests! Not only do we want church family to decorate vehicles, we need church members and friends to be in the crowd meeting and greeting families. You will not only meet “churched” families, but will also see a lot of lost families coming as well. If the only things that these families get from us is a bunch of candy and food, we will have failed. Let’s be ready to introduce ourselves to them and share the love of Jesus with our guests! In the church lobby is a sign-up sheet for vehicles and an information sheet. We want to have around 30 cars decorated in our parking lot. Also.......We need candy! Please bring any candy donations (or money for candy) to the main office. Thanks for all your help, Mr. Doug DISCIPLESHIP Encounter-Equip-Embrace-Engage It’s a good time to be at Calvary! Why? Because life is happening and we are investing in each other’s lives. We are in a unique position of growth and ministry and it is spreading in every one of our main ministries: Sunday School, Worship, Life Groups, and Wednesday nights! Now let’s continue to stay plugged in and challenge our friends and absent members to return. Can you see the potential? Do we expect to see the potential become a reality? Join me in the pursuit as we become more like Christ. J Building Ministry with You in Mind! Ron Encounter-Equip-Embrace-Engage REMEMBER TO GIVE TO THE MISSION BUDGET ABOVE YOUR REGULAR OFFERING We did not ask for a pledge this year for Mission Budget and the giving is falling below our last year’s totals. Dear Church Family, DAY BAPTIST WOMEN MEET 1st TUESDAY OF MONTH AT 9:30AM JOIN US AS WE LEARN ABOUT MISSIONS KELLY STEVENSON WOULD LIKE TO BE SURE THAT YOU ARE AWARE OF THE National Life Chain being held, Sunday, October 5. More than 1500 cities across the US and Canada are expected to participate. The location will be on the sidewalk in front of Hannibal High School. A collection will be taken up for Birthright of Hannibal. For more information, call Tina at 573-7954617. The daycare is still doing wonderful and our attendance is still going strong! The older children have been working their way through the alphabet. As they learn to write and recognize each letter, we try to plan fun things for them to do that are centered on that letter such as activities, snacks, and field trips. We are still teaching our kids bible verses and we expect them to memorize them in just one short week. The kids have had a lot of fun memorizing verses and, for most, learning new and interesting things in the Bible. It bring me such GREAT joy to hear the kids talk about knowing who Jesus is and that He died on the cross for them! I couldn’t be happier that our chapel services are back up and running. We took the summer off, but now we are back learning and praising God in the sanctuary every other Friday. Anyone is welcome to attend our chapel services. They are geared towards the little kids, so kid songs and lessons that children ages 3 and up can understand. Our services start at 10am and usually only last about a half hour. All prayers are expected with open arms for our daycare. I will ask all of you to please pray our chapel services and how it can greatly impact the children of the daycare and the children involved in our homeschool group. With Love, Jill McCloud, Daycare Director Operation Christmas Child Now is the time to start packing those boxes! Do these gift-filled shoeboxes really make a difference? A simple gift-filled shoebox delivered to a child in need can give hope, change lives, and transform communities Something so ordinary as a shoebox can accomplish the eternal when it is packed with toys, school supplies, hygiene items, and God’s love. Powered by prayers, it can help lead children and families to faith in Christ, inspire pastors, plant and grow churches, and encourage disciples in some of the most unreached places in the world. One shoebox can also restore hope that there is a God who loves, cares, and is concerned about the details of a child’s life. And when you bless a child, you minister to parents as well. Through shoeboxes, churches grow, disciples multiply, and doors open for the Gospel— sometimes even in countries where it is illegal to be a Christian. Calvary will start collecting your shoeboxes in October. All shoe boxes should be filled and returned by Sunday, November 9, 2014 We are so excited about the new video series that we are showing at our Griefshare group this fall. Although the message is still dealing with aspects of Grief, the videos are new and refreshing with a few new Professional Speakers and some of our old favorites too. We are excited to add Carole Jo Riley to our facilitators! She has been through the course and has see firsthand how God has used GriefShare to help her on her Journey toward healing. God always brings just the ones that he knows need to be in our group and we are so thankful for them. If you know of a friend or loved one who would benefit from the GriefShare support group, please have them call Irene Hurt 573-795-2433 for more information. PS: we have outgrown our old room so we are currently meeting in the Pastor’s Conference room from 6:00pm-7:30pm. Hope to see you there. S.A.A.L.T. (Sr Adults Abundantly Living Today) Food For Thought: Human strength is a strong deterrent to trusting Christ. When we rely on our own strength, resources, and knowledge, we assume we can handle situations without help from God. We tend to divide problems into two categories: problems that we know require God’s help and problems we think we can handle on our own. Is that you? How does that match up with scripture? If we are becoming more like Christ, why do we so easily turn Him away and turn back to our own sinful independence? Calendar: Oct 2 - Breakfast w/ staff at 9 am @ The Dinette Oct 16 - Forever Young at Noon Also, don’t forget October Sunday Nights w/ the Pastor. Come explore the Word with Bro. Jeff as he leads you through the New Testament. Serving Him and serving you! Ron Missouri Adoption Heart Gallery In 2006 Missouri began its first Heart Gallery project. The Heart Gallery is a unique way t help children in foster care who are waiting for adoptive families step from the shadows into the light. The Heart Gallery booklet is on the Lobby Desk For more information go to the website MOHeartGallery.org It contains information about becoming a foster or adoptive parent along with portraits of children waiting for forever families. LAITY CARE How Can I help others? You may not feel God calling you to join the counseling center but He will use you just where you are if you have a willing heart and a listening ear. Here are some practical ways you can help others. No matter what you do, whether you work inside or outside the home, are a stay at home mom, or retired, you influence other people. Many times through life you encounter others who are looking for help. A friend, neighbor, work associate, or family member will eventually approach you and share a deep concern, trial, or challenge they are facing. When they do, are you ready to help? Here are a few simple guidelines for preparing yourself to help others: 1.Be compassionate. To be effective in helping others, you must be a loving, compassionate person. You must love the person enough to present the truth to this person, regardless of what the truth may suggest for him/her. When the rich young ruler came to Jesus and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life, “Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me” (Mark 10:21). Even though the truth was strong, and ultimately was rejected, Jesus did not force God’s solution on the young man. 2. Listen to the problem. While a compassionate person will listen carefully to the problem, he/she must also seek to discover the individual’s attitudes and re-acttions toward people and circumstances. The process should not be hurried. The person’s current behavior and attitude, which reflects the past, should be the major concern. Listen for evidence of the need for the fruit of the Spirit and specific issues of sin. Do not be afraid to do this, you know that the blood of Jesus Christ can wash away sin! Listening is an art. 3. Point the person to a solution. Be sure you correctly understand the person’s situation, attitudes, and reactions toward the problem. Do not jump to a solution too quickly. Many people will talk first about a surface problem before they get to their real problem. When you come to an agreement with the person you are helping as to what the real problem is, and you understand his/her attitudes and reactions, then use the Bible as a mirror so the individual can see himself/ herself reflected from Scripture. At this point, you need to be firm, not stern! You do not need to strive with the person but simply need to faithfully, gently, patiently, and lovingly declare the Word of God. If the person is not a Christian, this is the time to present the plan of salvation. If the person is a Christian, this is the time to teach him/her that they are not walking in the Spirit. He/she may repent, or not, go away and think about it, or ask to talk again to clarify a few things. 4. Use other counseling helps. Direct this person to our Laity Care Counseling Center. They can call for an appointment at 573-231-5741. You can also direct the person to go to www.kerryskinner.com and click on “Free Audio” to listen to a supporting message. Introduce the person to a small group Bible study. CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS COLUMN Invite them to attend a worship service with you. Suggest a study like, “The Heart of the Problem” or “Experiencing God.” Remember, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. “ (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) (This article was adapted from an article at www.kerryskinner.com) Northeast Missouri Regional Sunday School Leader Training Saturday, October 18 at FBC, Monroe City, MO Registration begins at 8:30am General Session begins at 9AM Conference 9:30am to Noon Conferences for each Age Group Preschool and Children’s Leaders Student Leaders and Adult Leaders Pastors and Sunday School Directors Guest Speaker is Ken Braddy Lifeway Adult Bible Studies Manager 73rd Annual Booster Banquet Friday, November 21 7:00PM Featuring Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar Of 19 Kids and Counting Buy tickets on line at www..hlg.edu/BoosterBanquet or call 629-3126 The baby shower or Baby Norah and Christina Merrell will be held at a later date We anxiously await and pray for Norah to be big enough to come home from the hospital Norah was born on September 26 She weighted 3lb and 2oz Pray for the family and Norah and be watching for a new shower date
