Dear Friends,
This past High Holiday season was a great one. As your rabbi, the view from
my seat is a unique and beautiful one. It was so nice to see how many people
came to celebrate the holidays with us here at TBEMC. It was also so nice to
look out and see all of the people. We have a strong community and, from the
looks of the High Holy Days, we have the ability to be even stronger.
I would like to thank everyone who made these High Holy Days so special.
To our office staff, Susan and Chris, thank you for making sure that everything
was in place and that everyone had everything they needed. I want to also single out Susan Lemerman and to thank her for all her years of service. Our
community is so very grateful for all that you have done for us. Personally, I
want to thank you for showing me the ropes, for helping a new rabbi feel at
home in this community and for empowering me, and our entire community
to succeed. You will be missed.
To our baal Koreh, Art Wershultz, thank you for your tireless dedication.
Now, please stop pushing yourself and let us take care of you for a little bit.
To Patty Werschulz, Phil Stein, Laura Cohen, Becky Leibowitz, Mark Kaplan
and the rest of the high holiday and ritual committees, thank you so much for
organizing tickets, services, our annual campaign and for making sure everything ran smoothly. To all of the ushers, thank you for your hard work and for
helping to create such a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
A special thank you to my partner on the bima, Cantor Kintisch. Your
talent, warmth and presence helped create an atmosphere of welcome and joy
throughout the High Holy Days. Since Yom Kippur has ended I’ve been
getting such good feedback from people about how much they enjoyed the
services. That was only possible because of our great partnership. I’m very
excited to continue working with you and growing from strength to strength.
I’ve been overwhelmed by the positive feedback and I’m so grateful that
everyone found these High Holy Days enjoyable and meaningful. It’s an honor
and privilege to be the rabbi for such a beautiful and warm community. Thank
you for allowing me to be your rabbi and for sharing these High Holidays.
Now that the holidays are over and we no longer find ourselves in services
for hours and days on end, I want to tell you about a few things that will be
going on in our community. You’ll find the dates later in the bulletin.
First off, we are excited to welcome back Java ‘N Jeans for its second year.
For those who might not know, Java ‘N Jeans is our Shabbat morning conversation about prayer, religion and community. It’s held from 9:30 until 11:30
am once a month during the year.

SUKKOT DINNER
There are so many people to thank for
helping make the Sukkot dinner a success. More than 100 people attended!

Secondly, we had our first Shabbat yoga service last week, and we got some
rave reviews. We are very excited that our own Tammy Kaplan Spiewak will
be leading this service of yoga, meditation and Judaism. This service will be
on select Shabbat mornings at 10:15. As Tammy herself said, “join us on your
mat to create community through breath, movement, and meditation.”
Also, I started teaching a theology class once a month on Sunday mornings,
on Sunday October 25th. Join us at 9:30 as we explore the history of theology
starting from the biblical period, and going all the way up through today.
Keep your eyes open for more information about an eight week class that
will be held on Thursday evenings. The class will be about the history of Israel
as told through some of the most important court cases in her 67 year history.
Enjoy the fall season, and may this year be a happy, healthy and sweet one
for us all.
RITUAL
Even when it’s not a holiday, come to
minyan and be counted! Evening minyan
is at 7:30, Sunday mornings at 9. In November, morning minyan is in Clark, on
Mondays and Thursdays at 6:50 am,
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:00.

SISTERHOOD
Thank you to Samuel Kimmelman for
his donation to Sisterhood.
Oneg/Kiddush Shopping All men and
women are invited to help shop or platter for Shabbat. Shoppers must have
food in refrigerator by 10 am Friday
morning. Shop at your leisure and buy
what you like to eat. Plattering takes
place Friday morning at 10 am unless
those signed up for a particular date discuss and change to suit their schedules.

TBEMC HONORS DONORS
TBEMC recently honored some of its CJL participants by asking
them to carry Torahs in the Kol Nidre procession. We acknowledge
that the 39 people who have made a commitment to TBEMC’s
future are the key to both the future of our shul and Judaism in
general. Because of gifts such as these, the shul will be able to fund
future programming and projects which dues alone could never
cover. As we move forward into year 99 of our storied history,
people such as these join a long line of others who supported the
efforts of TBEMC over time and cared that it survive into the next
generation. On November 12th, donors are invited to a community-wide Shorashim (Roots) celebration which will bring people
together and share stories of why giving was important to them.
The opportunity to “give back” and “pay forward” is something
each of us can do now. By making a legacy (post-life) gift now,
you are not taking current dollars away from your personal use.
You can live your life knowing that you have left a future gift to
this organization, which will make the difference in the future. It
will provide funding to enable TBEMC to address major projects
like making accessibility changes in our sanctuary configuration
and ingress and egress into our building, as well as special programming needs. Every legacy gift matters, no matter what size!
You too can make a difference to TBEMC’s future by creating
legacy gifts in many sizes and forms, which we are more than
happy to discuss with you. We have posted the most current list of
donors in the Temple lobby, and will include that list in next
month’s bulletin article. Our sincere thanks to them.

In spite of the bad weather during Sukkot, Religious School
kids and Cantor Kintisch still enjoyed the traditional pizza
in the hut – just indoors.

Religious School News
Off to a Great Start
Cantor Benjamin Kintisch, Education Director
Enrollment is Strong
School began for our students on September 20 this year, and
the wonderful energy in the building was palpable. We are
delighted to welcome so many new families and children to
our school program, with enrollment now at 71 children. We
have many children returning from last year and 20 children
who are new to our program this year.
Gan Katan Early Childhood Program
Our surging school population includes eight children in our
new Gan Katan early childhood program. This new class for
children three and four years old, meets twice monthly, and is
taught by the talented Jewish educator Debbie Goldsmith.
Debbie led the Tot Shabbat program here in the Temple last
year for our youngest families, and has worked previously at
the JCC in Scotch Plains. Gan Katan features many ageappropriate Jewish learning activities, including early literacy
in Hebrew, Jewish holiday crafts, Jewish-themed read aloud
stories, Jewish children’s music and dancing, as well as free
play time. It is a great joy to see so many young children
bringing their spirit and energy to our program. We hope that
these young children continue to grow and learn with us for
many years to come!
Family Musical T’fillah on Sunday Mornings
Many parents join our student body every Sunday morning
for our Family Musical T’fillah. Some weeks we have nearly
100 people singing and praying together. Our seventh graders
lead the music in a percussion band, along with Cantor
Kintisch on guitar. We combine spirited singing of liturgical
songs with elements of the traditional morning services, such
as the Sh’ma and the Amidah. Children of all ages are participating with joy and kavanah (intention) along with a dozen
or more of their parents. All congregants are welcome to come
and join us on any Sunday morning for this special and meaningful community prayer service.
Wonderful Faculty
A school cannot run without teachers, and we are proud of the
talented and motivated teaching team here at TBEMC
Religious School for the 2015-2016 school year. We were
glad to welcome back Michal Strauss (3rd grade) and Nita
Polay-Levin (4th grade).
We are so lucky to welcome several great new teachers to
our team. The K/1 class is taught by Yehudit Becker. The 2nd
grade class is led by Paola Baharav. The 5th grade is being
taught on Sunday mornings by Cantor Kintisch and by Paola
Baharav on Tuesdays. The 6th grade is being taught by
Laurence Epstein. The 7th graders are learning with Mimi
Gold. Welcome aboard to our excellent new teachers!
Growing Volunteer Corps of Teens
and Adult Members
TBEMC Religious School benefits so much from the growing
corps of volunteers who give so generously of their time and
energies to enhance learning for all of our students. All four
of the recent graduates of our school program (8th graders
Seth Levine, Lauren White, Gabby Aubrey and Zachary
Spergel) are working with our children as volunteer school
assistants. We have two other young teens helping in Kindergarten/1st grade and 2nd grade.
Adult volunteers continue to provide invaluable academic
support to our children through in-class service and remedial
Hebrew support and tutoring. Thank you to Liela Bernstein
for helping with Hebrew, Abbie Halperin for helping in the
library, and Joan Finkelstein for support in the 2nd grade
classroom.
School Committee Providing
Feedback and Support
Thank you to the committed TBEMC members who are
serving on our school committee. We meet monthly to discuss
and review new programming, curriculum, school policies and
issues of governances. Our co-chairs are Stephanie Rubenstein
and Phyllis Kandl. Other returning committee members
include secretary Robin Berkman, treasurer Craig Schwartz,
and board liaison Nancy Lubarski. Welcome to our three
newest members: Sarra Herzog, Jessica Handsman and Susan
Lesser. With the leadership of our school committee and their
helpful support, we are able to continue building and improving our school program together.

will take some carving implements to
seasonal gourds and create masterpiece
porch ornaments that will probably feed
a few squirrels for the winter! Tools will
be provided as well as seasonal refreshments (cider, hot chocolate, and perhaps
pumpkin desserts!). See the flyer later in
the bulletin.

Our opening inter-chapter event for
Kadima and USY. AND we'll be ordering
some Chinese takeout afterwards. We've
already got a lot of interest from Kadima,
and since this is a multi-chapter event,
you can bring your friends from nearby!

TBEMC, 7pm Join us Saturday night!
Shabbat is starting to end early, we'll
begin with Havdalah and continue until
9:15. Bagels, muffins, OJ and other
breakfast food will be provided. Let me

MELTON SCHOOL The 10 session course, the Foundations of
Jewish Living, Values for Jewish Parents to Share with Their Children,
is co-sponsored by TBEMC and JCC MetroWest and taught by Rabbi
Goldstein. The next class is November 15 and will be held one Sunday
a month at 9:30 a.m. This course provides you with the learning,
language and confidence to be a teacher to your own children and
support Jewish learning at home. For more information contact Rabbi

HEBREW READING Do you know how to read Hebrew? Would
you like to learn? This class is for mothers, fathers, grandmothers,
grandfathers, relatives, friends and neighbors. You do not have to be
a member of the synagogue! The course in Hebrew reading will meet
at TBEMC every Sunday morning from 11:00 a.m. to noon. The
course is for BEGINNERS. Anyone can join if they don’t yet read
Hebrew and would like to:
• Learn as your children learn
• Feel more comfortable at services
• Prepare to have your own Bar/Bat Mitzvah
• Have an Aliyah at your child or grandchild’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
The class is taught by Liela Bernstein every Sunday morning. The cost
is about $20 (the price of the text book). If interested, call Liela at

TORAH WITH LAURA Do you sing along when we recite
Ve’ahavta and Tzitzit during the Sh’ma? Then you know about 80%
of the trope notes for chanting the Torah! The new session is starting
soon for those who want to learn a new skill or refresh your knowledge
of Torah chanting. The goal will be to chant a 3-4 verse Torah Aliya.

Presidents’ Message
The heart of a volunteer is not measured by its size, but by the
depth of their commitment to make an improvement in the
lives of others. In its 99 years of existence, TBEMC has been
blessed with many deep-hearted people.
A synagogue such as ours cannot exist without its volunteers. Aside from clergy, those who choose to donate their
work, wisdom and wealth are the heartbeat of our shul. Things
just don’t happen here; we have a cavalry of people, many behind the scenes, that come to our rescue and who perform
magic for us every day. We must start
with some very special people who

As we mentioned last month, we welcomed so many new member families this
fall. We want you to know something about them, so you can greet them when
you see them. For the other families who joined this fall or summer, you should

Reissman Family Becca and Adam Reissman have been
Westfield residents for 10 years. They’re very happy to
belong to TBEMC, and you may have seen them around
the past few years at various
events and services. They’re
excited to be involved as well!
Their son Max is 8 and daughter Natalie is 3.5. The Reissmans enjoy traveling and
family excursions, and are big
football fans, watching professional games and cheering on
Rutgers. Becca works in
Manhattan for a broadcast PR firm, and Adam works for an
insurance brokerage in Somerset. Look for them hanging
out in downtown Westfield with their kids in tow.
Canter/Piatkowski Family Melanie Canter and her
sons Jacob (age 10) and David (age 4) Piatkowski live in
Roselle Park. They moved
from Passaic in October,
2014. Jacob loves to draw and
write, while David loves
collecting and dressing up in
superhero costumes. Melanie
works part time as the Enterprise Clerk for the Roselle
Park High School and
Summer Camp. The family
loves movies and TV and the kids have a knack for
performing. This makes Melanie proud, since she comes
from a theatrical background and has a degree in theatre.
Brugger Family The Brugger family has called Scotch
Plains home for six years. Their son Danny is 9, and Noah
is 7, and they have two dogs an elderly retriever/shepherd
and a Plott hound puppy. Seth
is an attorney and Abby is a
medical editor. For fun, Seth
plays tennis and Abby likes to
cook. They are thrilled to be a
part of TBEMC.
Natt Family Shoshana, Brett
and their sons Jaden (age 9)
and Alex (age 4) moved from
Hoboken to Westfield at the
end of the summer, along with
their 11 year old wheaten
terrier Beavis. Shoshana
works in advertising sales for
HGTV and DIY Network,
while Brett is in pharmaceutical sales with Allergan.
Sclar Family The Sclars moved to Westfield this past
summer from Rockland County, New York. They
previously lived in Brooklyn and Great Neck, Long Island.
Ari, originally from Minneapolis, attended the University
of Wisconsin as an undergrad
before getting his masters
degree in North Carolina, and
a PhD in American History
from Stony Brook University.
He teaches history at the
Ramaz Upper School in New
York City and works as an
adjunct professor at Hunter
College. Rachael, originally
from Westchester County, attended Ithaca College before
moving to Chicago for graduate school. She’s a clinical
psychologist working in private practice. Their two daughters, Avi who is 9 and Hanna who is 7, attend Jefferson
Elementary in Westfield.
Spiewak Family Jason and Tammy have lived in
Westfield since 2007. Their kids Jacob (age 9) and Maya
(age 6) attend McKinley
Elementary. Tammy is a yoga
instructor and spiritual guide
(check out her Yoga Shabbat
service at TBEMC) and is a
student of Gabby Bernstein.

this system and to Howard Epstein for
the technical assistance he gave to me

every two weeks. Consider honoring or
memorializing someone by placing a
bookplate in a new book for $25. To
have a library tribute card made in honor
or memory of someone, donate anything
over $5, which is greatly appreciated. All
donations are welcome!

no longer reading. Many are missing, including youth, religious school, kids’ and
adult books. Use the drop box outside or

TBMEC
Take some time to peek into the buckets outside the Religious School
doors (by the parking lot). Get excited. There is real food growing in
there and a lesson in all is not as it seems. From afar, it is true, there
are a lot of orange buckets and some stuff growing in them. Close up
there is growth, life, and love. Get excited about growing food. Get
excited that TBEMC is open to the creation of gardens for our spiritual,
emotional, and physical health. It is time to start talking about the next
steps, so please let me know if you are interested in helping me build

Hosted by the Zayin Class
Sunday, November 1
10 am to noon
The Zayin (7th grade) class will be hosting a cell phone
tutorial. All seniors who want to learn to operate their
phone more proficiently, RSVP for a slot for this
November 1 session. There are four time slots, with
five people in each, so sign up quickly to get a spot! If
the event is successful, we will consider having another
one. There is a $1.80 charge. Please sign up on the
bulletin board inside TBEMC’s lobby front doors or
just stop by.

You recently filed your taxes, and maybe you’re looking for

Use them instead of your credit card
when grocery shopping as well. When
you buy your gift card through
Sisterhood, TBEMC gets a percentage of
every card, and it costs you nothing
extra. Did you know that 5% of every
ShopRite card you buy goes directly to
TBEMC? While you may forgo your credit
card rewards in using them, you’ll be
making a valuable donation to the shul.
How to get gift cards:
• Linda Flaxman is the queen of gift
cards. Contact her linda.flaxman@
rutgers.edu to order specific cards, or
for your daily use. She’s often at the
Sunday morning minyan with her box
of cards, as well as other synagogue
events.
• Connie Moore in the temple office has
several types of grocery store gift
cards. Come in during office hours (including at the start of Tuesday Hebrew
school) and purchase from her.
Gift cards bring in thousands of needed
dollars to TBEMC every year. While it
may take a little adjustment in how you
do your grocery shopping, or ordering a
little earlier from Linda and not picking
them up at the neighborhood store,
you’re doing an extra mitzvah in buying
them from Sisterhood.
