WELCOME to the 2016 SEASON!
A
s we prepare for our 2016 sailing season at LMSS, I want to thank you for being a part of this
program, and to tell you about the wonderful work that your gifts and participation have
made possible. Thanks to you, we are coming off a remarkable 2015 season with the energy and
resources to build an even more successful season this year. Our highlights from 2015 include:
•
•
•
BUZZINN
Our competititve spirit keeps us working
hard, refining our skills and strategies so
we win and our clients win.
These successes would not be possible without persistent updates and improvements to our
equipment and course offerings, as we adapt to the changing needs of our students. In 2016, we
are taking a number of steps to continue to provide top-notch instruction at every level:
•
•
•
AMAZINN
The result is that we sell twice as many
homes in the Minnetonka School District
than any other realtor... Amazing!
LMSS continued its partnership with the Minnetonka Yacht Club to provide new developmental opportunities for our youth fleets.
Our Race Team’s reputation for superb training continued to draw sailors from around the area.
Enrollment was at a four-year peak, allowing for a spirited and competitive learning environment.
The 2015 USODA Midwest Championship was held at LMSS in September. Nearly 70 sailors
from across the country competed.
LMSS will be taking delivery of six Hartley 12’s this spring. The Hartley 12 will provide a safe
and fun training platform for sailors aged 10-13, and its robust construction makes it a longlasting and durable addition to our fleet.
Our Recreational Camp classes have changed to provide more individual instruction. New age
groupings for this season are 7-9, 10-12, and 13-16.
We have added two additional Little Skipper classes (formally Pre-Pram). This popular class for
sailors aged 5-7 has historically filled to capacity. Adding two classes gives us the opportunity to
enroll more entry-level sailors while keeping our class size to just ten students.
Thank you for being a part of LMSS. I’m excited for the upcoming season, and I look forward to
sharing a summer full of learning, fun, and competition with you.
We’ll see you soon on Lighthouse Island!

2016 CURRICULUM
A PATH TO SUCCESS
A
t LMSS, there is a class to fit the needs
of every sailor, at any age or experience
level. To make finding the right class easier,
the program is organized into three tracks:
Recreational Sailing, Learn to Race, and
LMSS Race Teams. Interested students are
encouraged to advance through these tracks
as their skills improve.
The Boats Pram, Optimist, Hartley 12, 420, and Laser
RECREATIONAL SAILING
LMSS certifications follow a building block
technique, combining learned skills with experience. After class completion, sailors will
be evaluated on their skills and will receive a
level certificate for completion. Based on the
knowledge obtained and the comfort level of
the individual sailor, students can move upward to a more advanced track. These levels
are designed in conjunction with the track
system to help our students move within
our program at a comfortable pace that is
right for them.
Optimist (ages 8-15) The rock star cousin to the Pram, Optis are designed for young sailors to
learn racing on their own. Used in Learn to Race and LMSS Race Teams; either supply your own,
or charter from LMSS for a moderate fee.
1-2 week sessions designed for students who have
little or no sailing experience, or for those who want
to enjoy a noncompetitive environment. Using the
Pram, 420, and Hartley 12, recreational classes cover
the basics of sailing, allowing students to gain confidence on the water and develop relationships with
other sailors their age. Classes include: Little Skip-
Seamanship Levels Ensign, Captain, and Admiral
Pram (ages 5-9) Global trainers, Prams have all the basics to allow for safe, fun learning with a few
friends along for the journey. Used in Little Skippers and Recreational Camp.
NEW IN
2016!
Hartley 12 (ages 10-13) The skipper/crew dynamic starts here. These robust rotomolded
boats provide a stable, forgiving platform for two or more younger sailors. Used in Recreational Camp and Middle & High School Teams.
per, Recreational Camp, and Adult & Family sailing.
LEARN to RACE
Building on Recreational Sailing skills, curriculum is
focused on the fundamentals; points of sail, sail trim
and steering technique. We also introduce basic
racing skills and rules for competition. Skills gained
in Learn to Race classes are a launching pad for the
LMSS Race Teams. Classes include: Opti and 420
Learn to Race, and Opti Booster.
WHAT TO BRING
All LMSS classes have the same basic equipment requirements. Refer to this list so that you or your child
have everything you need while out on the Island.

of sailing fundamentals and a rigging demonstration. Your group will then go sailing and build
your skills out on the water.

tudents will continually work to improve their skills, focusing on boat speed upwind and
downwind, mark rounding, and boat handling through daily chalk talks and drills. Sailors will
also gain better understanding of racing rules and technical rigging techniques specific to Optis.
MSS has a long history of providing exceptional racing instruction for sailors who are looking
to achieve a higher level of performance at a regional and national level.
The goal of the LMSS Race Teams is to provide a rigorous and comprehensive practice and racing schedule to ensure that our sailors get the most out of their time on the water, while fostering an environment where individual goals can be met.
Opti Intermediate sailors will practice with the Advanced Team, however they will break off into
their own groups throughout the week to provide focused instruction.

iddle school (grades 7-8) and high school (grades 9-12) sailing at LMSS is a team atmosphere
where sailors represent their school in spring and fall seasons. With practices and regattas

ntended for sailors who are prepared to take the next step and test their skills in a competitive
environment, the Race Team will have well-defined practices as well as a schedule of local and
regional regattas.
The Race Team will practice daily, breaking off into
their own groups when needed. Sailors will focus on
improving their boat speed upwind and downwind,
starting preparation, mark rounding, boat handling
including spinnaker and trapeze, tuning, knowledge
of racing rules, and general seamanship. Sailors will
be expected to participate in local and regional regattas throughout the season.
Tentative regattas include: TCYS, Junior Olympics,
and Bemis/Smythe Qualifiers.
During each season, a solid calendar of local and traveling regattas allows sailors interested in
competing the opportunity to do so. For local regattas, teams may be comprised of sailors from
several different schools and grade levels, while traveling Varsity regattas often require teams to
be comprised of four sailors from the same high school. LMSS will always assist in the development of a sailing team at any school, even if there is not one currently in place.
420s Are Available for Training
LMSS provides 420s for the Race and Travel Teams
during classroom training. One Laser is available
for use during classroom training on a trial basis.
Fees for middle and high school sailing include coaching, use of LMSS boats and sails, and supported
participation in local and travel regattas. LMSS fees do not include regatta or travel costs, or additional school athletic fees.
We Encourage Boat Ownership
LMSS maintains a limited number of 420s available
for race charter to ensure that boat access is never
a barrier to participation. Charters are available on
a first-come first-served basis. See pricing below.
Once the ice goes out, LMSS is on the water with our middle and high school sailors. Come brave the
elements and join the fun!

LMSS POLICIES
Water Safety Requirements
Parents must certify their child’s swimming skills. All students will be
given a swimming check-out on the first day of class. This will allow the
instructors to check each child’s swimming abilities. The check-out will
be with life jackets on and will include:
1. Swimming 50 yards unaided. 2. Treading water for 1 minute.
Children will also be given a water orientation to learn self-rescue
techniques with a sailboat. Failure to complete the swimming check-out
will result in the child being dropped from the course without a refund.
Age Requirements
We reserve the right to enforce age guidelines for our classes. Failure
to follow age guidelines when registering for classes may result in the
removal of your child from a class and the forfeiture of all fees.
Staff
Lead staff members are US Sailing-certified. All instructors have
received American Red Cross First-Aid and CPR training. Our
curriculum is developed from the US Sailing Certification Series, the
national standard for quality sailing instruction, as well as proprietary
LMSS, Inc. teaching systems.
Meals
Students attending classes at Lighthouse Island must bring their own
bag lunches. Purified drinking water is available.
Weather Conditions: Calm, High Wind, or Rain Storms
Classes will not be cancelled due to weather. Outdoor sailing-related
activities are complemented with fun games, educational sailing videos
and activities such as volleyball and swimming (with PFDs on). We will
also work on progress toward the appropriate Seamanship Level.
Discipline
Behavioral problems will not be tolerated. First time offenders will not
be allowed to participate in their chosen activity for an appropriate
period of time. Repeat offenders will be expelled.
Boat or Equipment Damage
In the unlikely event of significant damage to boats, sail, spars or other
equipment, the responsible student/parent is expected to pay for
reasonable repairs.
Refunds | Cancellation
Notice of cancellation must be made at least five weeks prior to the start
of the session to receive a full refund. Notice of cancellation after that
time will result in a 50% refund. There will be no refunds or pro-rates
after a session begins. Refunds are subject to a $25 fee.
