FREE PUBLIC LECTURE Hosted by the Centre for Addictions Research of BC Speaker: Warren Michelow, PhD(c), UBC’s School of Population and Public Health Harm Reduction at the Shambhala Music Festival Exploring recreational and poly-drug use at music festivals, and developing better responses to it When: Tuesday, June 23, 2015 • 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Where: GVPL Central Library, 735 Broughton Street, Victoria ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: In 2009 and 2013, festival-goers at the Shambhala Music Festival were surveyed about their drug use and questioned about poly-drug use, which is where multiple drugs are consumed over a short period of time. This presentation will share key results and lessons learned from these surveys and related qualitative research. This work sheds light on contemporary patterns of recreational drug use by young adults who attend this large and internationally renowned music festival in rural BC. We will also explore the factors that influence drug-use patterns and consider their implications for designing more relevant harm-reduction education and services. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Warren Michelow is a PhD candidate in the School of Population and Public Health at UBC. As a community-based harm reduction activist, he helped bring the Sanctuary movement to music festivals across BC and Alberta. Sanctuaries are volunteer-run safe spaces at music festivals where people who are feeling too high or overwhelmed from their drug use can find non-judgmental support. Warren’s PhD research explores the patterns of polysubstance use in recreational venues and the factors that influence it.
