First Thoughts
I began my ministry with you during a very special time of year. Holy Week and
Easter marked my first week in your midst. After that we moved toward our first
Congregational Conversation which was held last Sunday night. All of this meant that
my Interpreter articles have had a specific focus for my first month. Now, let’s step
back just a bit and get properly introduced. Some of my biographical information has
already been shared in print and I told some of my story at the March Sunday lunch,
but I realize that many of you may not know much about my background. So that I am
not a stranger preaching to you, let me briefly fill you in on who I am.
I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky because my Dad was a professor at the Southern Baptist
Seminary there. Church and ministry were a part of my life, but I never assumed that I
would be a minister. I went to Vanderbilt University with plans to be a lawyer and later
switched to a Business Major. It was my senior year of college when I was preparing
for a career in the business world that God called me to the ministry. I returned to my
hometown of Louisville to attend Southern Seminary, and it was there that I met and
married my wife Jane. We have ministered together in churches in Kentucky, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. The last twenty-eight years of
ministry were spent with the First Baptist Churches in Laurens, SC, Knoxville, TN and
Huntsville, AL.
I retired from pastoral ministry in August, 2014 when Jane was called to be pastor of
a church in Watkinsville, GA where we now live (greater Athens). This new chapter of
ministry allows me time to serve as your Interim Pastor. I also teach leadership and
pastoral preaching as an Adjunct Faculty member at McAfee School of Theology
(Mercer University) in Atlanta and am the Southeast Coordinator for the Center for
Healthy Churches, a coaching and consulting ministry that helps churches throughout
the country. I have a son (Andrew, married to Sarah) who lives in Birmingham, AL
and a daughter (Emily, married to Josh) who lives in Winston-Salem, NC. The special
joy for me right now comes from my 3 year old grandson, Liam, and my 1 year old
granddaughter, Annabelle, who both live in North Carolina. I enjoy sports, music of
many kinds, movies, the beach, and time with family.
Why do you need to know what I have just written? Because the church is a community
of faith. To be a community, we need to have some things in common. Part of this
common bond we share is based on the relationships we enjoy with each other. We are
bound together by the love of Christ. But Jesus also taught us, “By this everyone will
know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35, NRSV)
Our witness to the world is determined by how we love “one another.” I look forward to
being more than a preacher on Sunday morning. I want to experience community with
you. And for that to happen, we need to know each other’s stories. I have just told you
something of mine. I would love to hear yours.

Pastor Search Committee
Many thanks from the Pastor Search Committee for the large
group who participated in the Sunday night Conversation. The
attendance was encouraging and gratifying. David Hull directed
our focus, but it also produced a great evening of fellowship
around the tables. We have received much positive feedback
regarding this format. A large amount of information was
delivered to us and we will be organizing this data over the next
few weeks to have a summary ready for May 15. Whether you
could attend the last meeting or not, you will be welcome for the
second gathering. We will follow the same format, but address
different topics related to the search for our new pastor. Hope to
see you May 15. - Wade Blount, Chair
Please help us update our records in order for
you to receive the latest information and news!
Many of you have changed email addresses,
home and cell phone numbers, etc. Call the
Church Office (733-2236) to make any changes!
Thank you.

Vision 2020 Initiatives
A 20/20 Vision for First Baptist! Jesus told his disciples, “Peace I leave you;
my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your
hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7
Suggested Prayer Points:
* Confess to God that you sometimes live your days in fear.
* Name your most worrisome fears and ask Him to take charge of your
future.
* Express to Jesus your complete confidence in His care.
* Ask the Lord to lead First Baptist into a bright future of glorifying and serving
Christ!
