Bethany 2007 Men’s Soccer Media Guide About Bethany Bethany, a small college of distinction, was founded March 2, 1840, by Alexander Campbell, who provided the land and funds for the first building and served as the first president. Now more than 160 years old, Bethany College is a highly contemporary institution based in the tradition of the liberal arts. The College offers a wide array of studies, awarding bachelor of science and bachelor of arts degrees in more than 30 fields of study, many with options for emphasis. Students also may include as part of their programs one or more optional minors. The College’s program of liberal arts education prepares students for a lifetime of work and a life of significance. Bethany places particular emphasis on leadership and incorporates pre-professional education in dentistry, engineering, law, medicine, ministry, pharmacy, physical therapy and veterinary medicine. Bethany’s 1,300-acre campus is located in the northern panhandle of West Virginia in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. Pittsburgh is 39 miles to the northeast. A halfhour drive from the College are Wheeling, West Virginia; Washington, Pennsylvania; and Steubenville, Ohio. Since its inception, Bethany has been a four-year private liberal arts college affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This religious body, of which Campbell was one of the principal founders, continues to support and encourage the College, although it exercises no sectarian control. Students from virtually every religious community attend Bethany. The approximately 830 Bethany students represent 27 states, the District of Columbia and 12 other countries. Comprised of 10 select private institutions - Bethany, Chatham, Geneva, Grove City, Saint Vincent, Thiel, Thomas More, Washington & Jefferson, Waynesburg and Westminster - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More. Saint Vincent, an NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Another NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and begins league play as it starts NCAA Division III provisional membership in 2007-08. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. In 2006-07, the conference had 24 teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 14 to NCAA Championship events. The conference has received automatic qualification (AQ) status for NCAA championships for the 2007-08 academic year. All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, All-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson men and Westminster women captured the 2006-07 trophies (see below). True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans as well as NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named 541 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above. University, Dr. Smith began his professional career in higher education at Cornell in 1960. He returned to Wooster in 1962, serving as vice president until 1977 when he was appointed President of Chapman University in California. He was named President Emeritus in 1988. His years at Chapman were marked by a renewal of the University’s spirtual and intellectual life, as well as greatly enhanced financial position and significant expansion of enrollment. Smith Hall on the Chapman campus stands as a continuing expression of the University’s gratitude for his Dr. G.T. “Buck” years of service. Smith - President Recognized in Who’s Who in America for more than 30 years, Dr. Smith received the Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Bethany College in 1979, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education Steuben Apple Award for distinguished teaching in 1984, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of Wooster in 1991 and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Faith and Reason Award in 1994. Prior to coming to Bethany, his energies were directed primarily toward helping strengthen the management of non-profit organizations, both nationally and internationally, and restoring his historic family farm and home near Richmond, Va. BC Kosmas Mouratidis was named the athletic director and chair of physical education at Bethany in August of 2006. Also the head men’s soccer coach, Mouratidis has led Bethany to 38 wins over the last three seasons. Last year, he led the Bison to a 14-4-3 record, including a 5-0-1 mark in the conference, and their first NCAA Tournament bid since 2001 on his way to PAC Coach of the Year honors. He has now compiled a 65-51-11 record during his Bethany tenure and seen 26 different players earn All-PAC status. Mouratidis has also coached three PAC MVP’s in Stuart Bracher (2001), Daniel Reinoso (2002) and Lavel Williams (2004) and numerous All-Region players. On the field as an undergraduate, Mouratidis had a Kosmas Mouratidis Head Soccer Coach/ decorated playing career during his time at Bethany. He was a two-time All-Conference performer for the Bison in 1986 Athletic Director and 1987 and led Bethany to four straight NCAA Tournament South Region Final appearances. He also earned PAC MVP and All-American honors in 1986. Mouratidis graduated from Bethany in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. He earned his master’s degree in political science from the University of Toronto in 1989 and later his Bachelor’s of Education from Toronto in 1992. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in higher education at West Virginia University. 4 Coaching Staff Patrick Zambito, a 1991 Bethany graduate, is in his first year as the associate head coach for the Bison men’s soccer program. Zambito returns to Bethany after holding various coaching positions in the southeastern United States over the past 15 years. Most recently, he was a member of the Elite Staff of Atlanta Fire United, a Nike Premier Club, and the largest youth soccer club in Georgia. He also served as coordinator of the AFU Junior Academy and an age group coordinator in the Academy program. Although he has been gone for over 14 years, Zambito’s ties to West Virginia soccer run deep. He started out as a student at Bethany, helping with the men’s and women’s soccer teams Pat Zambito Assoc. Head Coach and working camps in the summer. In 1990, the same year he earned his “A” license from the U.S. Soccer Federation, he was named head coach at The Linsly School, who he helped establish as one of the top programs in the Ohio Valley. In 1992, the team captured their first OVAC and Interstate Prep School League championships, with Zambito and leading scorer Jamie Adams being named Coach and Player of the Year, respectively. While at Linsly, Zambito joined current Wheeling Jesuit men’s soccer coach Jim Regan on the first coaching staff of the Wheeling Soccer Club. Zambito also served as director of coaching for the West Virginia Soccer Association, and the WV Olympic Development Program. A year ago, BC went 14-4-3 and earned an NCAA bid for the first time since 2001, where they would fall in the first round to Denison. Although Bethany graduated key starters such as All-Region selections Kosta Floros and Ramon Franklyn, as well as leading scorer Sean Esterbauer, head coach Kosmas Mouratidis says his returners have come back prepared to improve upon last year’s results. “Camp went exceptionally well, as everyone came back fit and eager to build on last year’s success,” said Mouratidis, the 2006 PAC Coach of the Year. “Our players understand we lost integral parts from last year, but we are looking for some freshmen to compete with the returning players for those jobs.” Another new face to the Bison this year is associate head coach Pat Zambito. A 1991 BC graduate, Zambito returns to his alma mater after holding various coaching positions in the southeastern United States over the last 15 years. Mouratidis says his addition to the program will not only help on the field but also in recruiting. “I am excited to have Pat on staff, as his wealth of coaching experience will be felt immediately,” said Mouratidis. “In addition, he will be a great recruiter for us in years to come.” On the field, Bethany’s biggest hole to fill is at goalkeeper, as Floros was a two-time First Team All-PAC selection and instrumental in Bethany not allowing a goal in regular season conference play for the first time in school history. Stepping into the starting position is junior Chad Perry, who went 2-0, including one shutout, last season. The defensive corps in front of Perry will be a mix of veterans and newcomers. Returning for their senior seasons are John Zervos (above), a three-time All-PAC pick, and Telly Mantziouras (left), a two-time all-league honoree. Senior Coulter Lewis, who has played in 19 career matches, is also back and numerous freshmen will be vying for time to fill out the defense. Bethany’s strength is in the midfield, as senior Aston Duporte, junior Mike Aivalis and sophomore BC 7 2007 Preview Jason Straw headline this group. Duporte (right), who had one goal and three assists last year, is one of the most experienced Bison, having played in 57 career matches entering this year. Aivalis earned Honorable Mention All-PAC after notching a team-leading five assists, despite missing the final five games due to injury. Straw (below, right) is back after a dynamic first season in which he played all 21 games. He tallied two goals, which were game-winners against Saint Vincent and Waynesburg, and had five points, while playing at a level far above that of a regular freshman. Another returning midfielder is sophomore Trevis Villafana, who played in 12 games a year ago and may see a bigger role this season. This is another spot where talented freshmen will battle for playing opportunities. There are two upperclassmen back at forward and their abilities will be blended with those of a few gifted freshmen. Junior Andrew McPherson (below) is the Bison’s leading returning scorer after totaling six goals and 13 points last season. Senior Steve Haylett, who recorded one goal and one assist in 13 games last year, will be looked upon to provide more scoring as well. While Mouratidis and his squad have their sights set on winning the PAC crown, a goal they fell just short of last year with a 4-3 loss to Westminster in the tournament title game, the Bison head coach knows the road will not be easy because of a deep and talented conference. Nevertheless, if his team develops through the season, Mouratidis believes the Bison will be right there at the end. “Our goal of winning the conference is made increasingly difficult every year because of the rapidly improving overall competition in the PAC,” said Mouratidis. “However, our main goal every season is for our players to improve individually and collectively as the season goes along and if we stay focused on achieving that, then we believe it can culminate in winning a PAC title.” BC 8 Meet the Bison-Seniors #23 Aston Duporte Senior - Midfield Toronto, Canada/ King Academy Year 2004 2005 2006 Total GP 17 19 21 57 G 1 1 1 3 A 1 2 3 6 Pts. 3 4 5 12 Career Highlights: Tallied a career-high five points last year ... The facility can accomodate up to 800 spectators and features a covered scorer’s table, electronic scoreboard and sprinkler and drainage systems. Formerly the Bethany Soccer Bowl, the Bison’s home field was rededicated in May, 1990 after it underwent remodeling during the winter and spring months of that year. Former College trustee William R. Hoag, who donated the lumber, hardware and labor to upgrade the facility, provided the funding for much of the $50,000 project. Hoag Field has hosted numerous NCAA Tournament matches in recent history, including the 1990 and 1991 South Region playoffs, the epic 1994 NCAA Quarterfinal match against UC-San Diego and all three of Bethany’s first round match-ups in their most recent trips to the postseason (2000-Frostburg State; 2001-Carnegie Mellon; 2006Denison). Facilities In addition to Hoag Field, Bethany’s soccer programs have top-notch training facilities. Highlighting those are the Castleman Auxillary Fields. Located on the opposite end of town from the Field House complex, this was home to BC soccer prior to the construction of Hoag Field. This complex has six minitraining fields and four full training fields and has hosted some of Bethany’s regular season and tournament games in recent history. In addition, it hosts the youth soccer leagues in Brooke County. The complex also has restrooms, a concession stand and an athletic training area. BC Located in the Johnson Health and Recreation Center, this arena has three full-size courts which can be used for basketball, tennis or volleyball. The Bison varsity tennis teams hold their matches here in the event of inclimate weather and many of the other varsity programs use this facility for workouts during the season and during their “nontraditional” seasons. Around the three courts is a 180-meter indoor running track, which is used by the varsity track and field programs for practice, as well as recreational walking and running. Also located in the Johnson Health and Recreation Center, this six-lane, 25-meter swimming pool is home to the Bison swimming and diving teams. It is also used by many Bethany sports teams as an alternative training method and is open during the day for recreational swimming. 2007 Schedule Date Sept. 1 Sept. 2 Sept. 6 Sept. 8 Sept. 9 Sept. 12 Sept. 14 Sept. 16 Sept. 29 Oct. 2 Oct. 4 Oct. 6 Oct. 10 Oct. 13 Oct. 17 Oct. 20 Oct. 24 Oct. 27 Oct. 31 Nov. 3 Opponent Site Defiance Classic Away vs. Medaille Defiance Classic Away vs. Defiance Frostburg State Away “Fuzzy” Williams Memorial Lake Erie vs. Lebanon Valley Bethany vs. Muskingum “Fuzzy” Williams Memorial Muskingum vs. Lebanon Valley Bethany vs. Lake Erie Marietta HOME Wheeling Jesuit Away Eastern Mennonite HOME Grove City* HOME Thiel* Away Waynesburg* Away Westminster* Away Franciscan Away Point Park HOME Homecoming Saint Vincent HOME Wash. & Jeff.* HOME Thomas More* HOME Geneva Away PAC Semifinals TBA PAC Finals TBA BC Time 3 p.m. 3 p.m. 6 p.m. HOME 1 p.m. 4 p.m. HOME 1 p.m. 4 p.m. 4 p.m. 7 p.m. 4 p.m. 3 p.m. 2 p.m. 1:45 p.m. 1 p.m. 4 p.m. 3 p.m. 1 p.m. 11 a.m. 1 p.m. 7 p.m. TBA TBA Bethany Men’s Soccer Tradition 30 Presidents’ Athletic Conference titles 19 NCAA Tournament bids 1982 NCAA Runner-up 1994 NCAA National Champions www.bethanywv.edu
