I don’t remember the picture, but the words said, “A Modest Proposal for Peace: Let all the Christians in the world agree to stop killing each other.” The first time I read it, I thought, “That’s silly! Christians don’t kill each other!” But the more I thought about it, the more I thought that my first reaction had been naïve. Christians do kill each other; sometimes (very rarely, I hope) by actually ending their lives, but much more often by ill-chosen words, malicious gossip, starting rumors, and simply snubbing them when we see them. Words can kill a soul, kill a reputation, kill a relationship. More than that, Christians see other people of faith as people with whom we don’t need to associate; people about whose faith we can remain ignorant; people whom we don’t need to try and understand. It is amazing to me how much more the average practicing Jew knows about Christianity than the average Christian knows about Judaism. How many of us have ever read the Koran? How about the Book of Mormon? A couple in our church is doing their own private study of world religions, just because they are interested. How good it would be if all of us could talk intelligently, or at least ask intelligent questions, about Islam, Buddhism, Greek Orthodoxy, or other faiths! In a small effort to begin to know our neighbors here in Victoria, and to express our concern for others, of whatever faith, who are in peril because of that faith, we are hosting a Prayer Service in Solidarity with People of All Faiths and Denominations, next Tuesday, March 3, at 6:00 in the evening. It will be a short service, probably thirty minutes, and will contain some prayers, a litany, a couple of hymns, and some readings, from various different faith perspectives. We have taken fliers to some churches, and will advertise in the Advocate and on local television, to try to get the word out. My hope is that we can begin to connect with Christians of other denominations, as well as people of other faiths, and learn to understand them, consider them friends, and all together we can say we are a movement for peace in our community, our nation, and our world. If you can join us on Tuesday, please do, and invite a friend to join you. It’s a small step, but we need to start somewhere, and who knows how big it can grow! See you in church! Your sister in Christ, Kathryn ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE PIT Carlynn will be starting a project and if you would like to help her, please let her know. There are zillions of pictures in a closet in the “The Pit”. October 24th 2016 will be the church’s 175th Birthday. There will be a celebration! It would be nice to have the pictures organized and in nice photo books for display at that time. (We bought 5 photo books from the Rummage sale) We need help putting the pictures into these books. If you love scrapbooking and have the time it would be greatly appreciated. After that is done, then the people in the pictures will need to be identified. Then we can have these books on display in the office reception area for all to enjoy! PRAYER SERVICE SOLIDARITY WITH PEOPLE OF ALL FAITHS & DENOMINATIONS On Tuesday, March 3, at 6:00 in the evening, we are going to do something which I and the Session believe to be very important. We are going to host A Prayer Service in Solidarity with People of All Faiths and Denominations. One of our members suggested it after seeing the reports of the twenty one Coptic Christians who were beheaded, apparently simply because they were Christians. The service is intended to be widely ecumenical, to invite all faiths to join together in prayers for unity, as people who want to stand up and be counted as sharing the belief that we can all live together in peace. The service will not have any political overtones; it will not point fingers, or wave flags. It will simply be people coming together to pray for peace and understanding. We hope you will join us.
