highlights of bilbao
Don’t miss out on Bilbao’s wealth of attractions, adventures and experiences
T
he city of Bilbao has undergone
a huge transformation in the last
15 years. Had you mentioned you were
visiting the city back in 1996, people
would have looked at you in shock.
‘El Boxto’ or the Hole, as Bilbao was
known, was one of the least glamorous
holiday destinations in the world. Now,
thanks to a facelift via the architectural
marvel that is the Guggenheim Museum,
Bilbao is one of the most visited places
in Spain.
The ‘Bilbao Effect’ has seen the city
attract many top architects who have
virtually redesigned large parts of
the city. Regenerated, Bilbao now boasts
plenty of Michelin-starred restaurants
and a lively nightlife, alongside luxury
hotels and high-end shopping.

You’ll struggle to read any article or
guidebook on Bilbao that doesn’t include at
least a passing reference to the Guggenheim
Museum; that is, unless it pre-dates 1997.
Since then, Frank Gehry’s masterpiece has
attracted hordes of tourists to the Basque
country. Shaped like a gigantic ship, a whale
or even Marilyn Monroe’s skirt in The Seven
Year Itch (depending on the observer), the
Guggenheim is recognized as one of the most
important modern architectural buildings.
Inside, the museum is equally impressive
with works from some of the 20th and 21st
century’s finest artists, including Picasso and
Andy Warhol.

The city of San Sebastian is just a tantalizingly
short journey away from Bilbao. Famed for its
beautiful beaches and gourmet restaurant
scene, the city is a popular summer retreat for
the beautiful people of Spain. La Concha,
a glimmering carpet of sand is the city’s
most famous beach, popular with visitors and
locals alike. The restaurants of San Sebastian
are held in a similar regard to those of Paris;
this really is one of the premier cities to enjoy an
epicurean evening. Arzak and Martin Berasategui
are two favorites, but there are many other
highly rated restaurants and bars to enjoy
pintxos, the distinctive Basque version of tapas.
Tenedor Tours will organize trips to and from the
city and arrange cultural and culinary tours.

Despite the changes, the strong cultural
traditions of the Basque region are still
very much in evidence. The picturesque
areas of the Old Town, with its plethora
of bars and restaurants serving
delicious pinxtos, the beautiful Basque
countryside, and the city’s passionate
love of its football team, Athletic Bilbao
are what make Bilbao such a unique and
fascinating city.

finest restaurants in the Basque country. Bearer of a
Michelin star and popular with critics, the restaurant
offers traditional Basque cuisine, including local
favorites such as Roast Baby Squid with Peppers
and Scallops on a bed of Tomato Carpaccio.
Zortziko offers three different dining rooms;
one has a Versailles feel to it, another is English
influenced, while the third has a more contemporary,
laid-back vibe. The best option, however, is to dine
in the wine cellar beneath, where you’ll be seated
at a rustic wooden table surrounded by premium
vintages. Just remember to book ahead; Zortziko is

The Basque country is world famous for its wines, from the traditional
aged varieties of the Rioja Alta and the bold fruity wines from the Rioja
Alavesa, to the very dry white Txakoli. Much of the countryside around
Bilbao is made up of vineyards and wineries, and Tenedor Tours will take
you on a private tour of the very finest. The day begins with a private driver
collecting you from your hotel; from there you will be taken to La Rioja to
see the wine-making techniques up close and sample the different wines
on offer. There are a huge variety of wineries in the region, some of which
are traditional limestone affairs, while others are grand architectural
buildings designed by geniuses like Frank Gehry. The tours are run by
Gabriella Ranelli de Aguirre, a well known Spanish food expert who has
written for the New York Times and filmed programs for the BBC.

The perfect complement to the Guggenheim Museum, Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao

unique design talents of Javier Mariscal and Fernando Salas, and includes a
85-foot pebble tower. Whimsical and wonderful, the Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao is
renowned as much for its luxury as for its design. The staff is attentive and polite,

Casco Viejo
Bilbao is a great city to stroll around and the old town area, Casco

The maze of interconnecting alleys feels a little like a rabbit warren,
but navigating yourself around is all part of the fun. The historical
seven streets, the oldest part of the neighborhood, feature many bars
and restaurants packed with laid-back locals. The Mercado de la
Ribera, reputably the largest indoor market in Europe, is adjacent to
the seven streets and well worth a visit. The elite traveler can expect to
find many locally produced goods, fruits, vegetables and other delicious
foods. Plazas Nueva and Unamuno with their traditional Spanish style
are great places to eat and drink, while the Iglesia de San Nicolás is a

Designed by Joaquín Rucoba and named after Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, a

sister venue in Ibiza. Throw in a guest appearance from the undisputed
queen of the party, Paris Hilton, and you’re bound to stir up even more
hype. Pacha Lounge Bilbao continues the fine traditions of the flagship
club with VIP seating, a cool laid-back crowd and pounding music,
but also features a restaurant serving food during the day and early
evening. With its $2 million investment and innovative sound system,
a night in Pacha Lounge will be the highlight of your evening out

Camp, contemporary, neo-Gothic, trendy; call it what you will, but you can never
call it boring. Some of the interior decorations are so unusual they are almost
comical; check out the framed antlers that were found in a local wood or the
‘Showtime’ chair. Décor aside, the bar is a chic affair that attracts Bilbao’s
movers and shakers. During the week the bar serves food but the best nights
are at the weekend when the tables are pushed aside and the music continues
till dawn.

Football is a way of life for many Basques who are passionate about the
game and support their team, Athletic Bilbao with fervor. Athletic Bilbao
is one of only three teams to have competed in the Spanish top division
since it began in 1928, the other two being the mighty Real Madrid
and Barcelona. Uniquely, Athletic Bilbao focuses solely on home-grown
talent, at one time only selecting players from the Basque region to
feature in the team. This ruling has relaxed a little, although Athletic fans
remain fiercely loyal and match day is a major event in Bilbao. The team’s
brand new stadium is being constructed right next to the old San Mamés
Stadium, and is expected to be ready by 2014. Tickets can be purchased
from the stadium and the team usually plays on a Sunday evening,
although some games may be played on a Saturday or Wednesday.

LOCAL CUSTOMS
First and foremost, we recommend the elite
traveler keep in mind the political tensions
around Basque nationalism. Many Bilbao citizens
prefer to be referred to as Basque – not Spanish
– and will speak the Basque language. It’s always
best to err on the side of caution and refrain from
wearing items like the Spanish national football
shirt, or other emblems associated with Spain.

ATTIRE
Similarly to other Western European areas,
Western-style dress is the norm throughout
the city. We advise some modesty when visiting
religious sites, and many restaurants will
require formal dress; for men this may mean
wearing a jacket, but seldom a tie. If in
doubt, we recommend you check with
your concierge.
