WHERE LEADERSHIP BEGINS VISION PROGRESS AND PLANS | ST. LAURENCE HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY I n this I s s ue Class of 2020 Preview 1:1 Technology Program Fall and Winter Sports Review SPRING 2016 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Pursue excellence. The past four years taught me the importance of unity. Unity is the state of being whole. It is the opportunity to bring vision to the blind, trust to the uncertain, and courage to the timid. Building unity is not easy, but should be the priority of every leader. Unity is necessary for success because it aligns the organization toward a common purpose. Our purpose at St. Laurence is to live the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brother. This year we focused on Essential Element #7: Pursue excellence in all endeavors. What does pursuing excellence mean? If our vision is to become the premier school of choice on the southside of Chicago, then we must promote a strong academic curriculum and cultivate a desire for excellence. It also requires us to develop an educational culture that fosters growth of the whole person, higher order thinking, and life-long learning. These tasks allowed us to lay the foundation for continued success. I am proud of the St. Laurence community and our most recent accomplishments. I pray these accomplishments ensure the trust of our faculty, alumni, parents and students. As Mark 3:25 states, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” Jesus made this statement knowing the difficulty of executing initiatives and creating change. He understood that leaders must align vision, trust, and courage in order to build a home where everyone is welcome. St. Laurence’s doors are open to you, and we always welcome you back. Our community is the foundation for success. Unify with us through prayer, time, and financial commitment as we continue on our future endeavors. Thank you and God Bless. Warm Regards, Joseph A. Martinez ‘99 President VIKING WELCOME St. Laurence had its most successful Entrance Exam since 2008, and we are pleased to announce a nearly 30% increase in test takers for the class of 2020! Joe Spano ‘94 Director of Admissions Driver’s Ed Coordinator Transportation Coordinator Students represented 81 different grade schools from the Chicagoland area and surrounding suburbs. The students who tested also scored well on the exam, with nearly 40% testing into our Advanced Placement or Honors Programs. Great job Vikings! We look forward to having you in our Viking family as we pursue excellence in all endeavors. These successes in admissions are attributed to the outstanding administration, faculty, coaches, alumni, parents, and students who show a dedication to St. Laurence in all they Alumni and their families are always welcome back to St. Laurence for events. This Christmas, we hosted the first annual Breakfast with Santa. We look forward to having these and other family-friendly events in the future. do on a daily basis. Prospective families and students who visit St. Laurence on a Viking Visit Day, Open House, Meet and Greet, or any school event see our great faculty and staff in action and feel the love and commitment they have for our students. This makes them want to be part of St. Laurence. Thank you to all of the Viking community — our successes are a direct reflection of all of you. My involvement in many extracurricular activities in elementary school has taught me to manage my time well, be a team player, and given me many leadership qualities that I hope to expand on at St. Laurence. Playing several sports, being the captain of my football team, an altar server, a member of student patrol, and an active boy scout, have provided me with opportunities to serve my community and become a well-rounded young man. Attending St. Laurence will only further my leadership abilities and encourage my drive to succeed. The times I have spent at St. Laurence over the past few years have reinforced my decision to attend this great school. I have attended events such as baseball and football camps, football jamborees, open houses, and shadow days. I have gotten very Kyle McHugh ’20 St. Symphorosa School O’Toole Scholar, Leader Scholar, Viking Award Winner familiar with the school campus, and many of the current students, teachers, and coaches. Whenever I visit St. Laurence, I can feel the sense of “home” that so many students have told me about. Walking the halls of St. Laurence, I already feel like I am a part of the special Viking family. VISION | SPRING 2016 2 SPIRITUALITY Being the rector for St. Laurence’s Kairos 62 retreat was an opening of a door to new experiences, and at the same time it was a visitation back to the experience I had on my first Kairos. It was a real test of character and the body as well, as there were a lot of sleepless nights and a lot of tough decisions to make. I owe some credit to the other student leaders who helped this retreat to be the best it could be. It would not have been the same without you guys. I take this opportunity to share the spotlight with them now: Thank you to Tim Hecker, Chris Wetzel, Jake Heeter, Tim Nichin, and Valentin Hanacek. And to all Kairos retreatants, LT4. St. Laurence’s 1:1 Program Several years ago, St. Laurence recognized the value technology has in enhancing education, and started the process of incorporating technology regularly into the classroom. After restructuring the curriculum, which is now project-based and emphasizes real world application and deep level analysis, the next step is incorporating 21st century technology that will enhance our StL STEM curriculum. Our incoming freshmen Class of 2020 will be the first class at St. Laurence to go 1:1 with iPads. This means that each freshman student will use an iPad to enhance his education. Jim Muting ’73 Currently, each teacher has received an iPad and is receiving ongoing professional devel- Principal opment from department tech leaders, DePaul University, and other educational leaders. While this is a new addition to St. Laurence’s technology plan, we have a long-standing Computer Lab Assistant Program and Computer Coding Class offered through Lewis University that empower students to develop tech skills. Lewis University Coding Class St. Laurence started a partnership with Lewis University last school year, offering free on-site dual enrollment classes for college credit. A new Lewis dual enrollment Computer Science coding class is now being offered, taught by Dr. Klump, a professor and Chair of the Computer and Mathematical Sciences Depart- Dan Turney Assistant Principal of Curriculum ment at Lewis University. Dr. Klump teaches a group of students from the Computer Lab Assistant Program, who are under the direction of Mr. McLean. These students are being exposed to college-level Computer Science and a variety of technology topics. ACT Prep Class This December, many members of our junior year O’Toole Program took the ACT after completing a 10-week ACT Prep course facilitated by St. Louis University Dean of Law and St. Laurence alum, Mr. Dan Keating ‘79. The experience greatly improved our student’s ACT scores in all categories. Some students increased their composite score by 6 points. Our students have been applauded for their hard work and are encouraged to continue to prepare for the ACT and take the test multiple times. Research shows this method is the ideal approach to improve ACT scores. January began STL’s second ACT Prep Course offering at the school through ExcelEdge. ”If it meant improving your overall score by 6 points, would you get up at 8:00 every Saturday for 12 weeks?” Well, this is the question that I chose to answer by taking Mr. Keating’s ACT Class. Mr. Keating, a law professor at Washington University in St. Louis, did a wonderful job of helping me prepare for the ACT when he held a free prep class every week. By having the class spread out, it helped me reinforce and keep in mind the information when I needed it for the test. I am so grateful for this opportunity and know that I could not have had this chance anywhere else. They captured their first Chicago Catholic League Title since 1987 and advanced to the IHSA Semifinals for the first time since 1979. The Vikes finished 10-3 on the year and set a new single-season scoring record with 566 points on the season (43.5 points per game). With such a prolific offense, a number of individual records were broken. Alex Martinez is the new single-season (2,534 yards) and career (4,024 yards) passing leader. Fayezon Smart broke the single-season rushing record Tim Chandler with 2,046 yards, Athletic Director Sports Management while Willie WalClub Moderator ton set the new single-season receiving yards mark with 1,009 yards. Finally, Mauricio Garibay set a new record with 71 extra points kicked. Future is Bright for Soccer The soccer program is young and talented with a bright future ahead. Despite having over 70 student-athletes in the program, there were only 5 seniors on the team. All 11 starters will be back next year for the Vikings, and many of them were freshmen and sophomores this year. That experience is sure to benefit the Vikes as they look to capture their 2nd CCL title in 3 years. Also, the sophomore team finished the year 13-3-1, so there will be even more talent joining the varsity squad next year. Student Athlete HIghlight Anthony Rios Class of 2016 ATHLETICS Bowling Team Wins CCL Championship For the 2nd straight year, the bowling team reigned supreme in the Chicago Catholic League. After dominating the regular season, the bowlers rolled to the Championship at the CCL Tournament. Additionally, the varsity team took home tournament titles at the Oak Lawn Invite and the Morgan Park Invite this year. The Vikings advanced to the Sectional where they bowled well, but came up just short of returning to the State Finals. Junior Juan Escamilla advanced to the Finals as an individual. Senior Manny Sanchez won the Lawless Award in the CCL and senior Matt Corona and Escamilla joined Manny on the All-Conference team. Basketball on the Rise After winning the most games since 200809 last season, the basketball team faced a grueling schedule that included a number of ranked teams to open this season. While they had a chance to win almost every one of the early season games, they struggled to a 1-6 start. However, the tough competition and the close games gave the Vikings confidence as they entered 2016. As of mid-February, they were 14-12 and in the semifinals of the Chicago Catholic League Tournament. The growth in the program in the two years since Coach Maley took over has been impressive, and his first freshmen class lost only two games all season under the tutelage of Jim Tracy ’72. From Old Quarry Middle School in Lemont, Anthony is a tremendous leader in the classroom and on the field. He carries a 4.3 GPA and is a captain of both the football and baseball teams. He was a 2-year starter on the offensive line and part of this year’s record-setting semifinal football team, and also a 2-year starter for baseball, where he is catcher and bats in the middle of the order. As a senior, Anthony looks back fondly. “The decision to attend STL was an easy one,” he says. “As soon as I shadowed, I knew it was the place for me. St. Laurence has prepared me academically to meet the challenges at the next level, and also prepared me for real life situations outside of the classroom with the STEM approach. On the field, my coaches have pushed me to reach my goals by preaching belief in myself and giving it my all, as well as playing the game the right way. St. Laurence has brought out the best in me both academically and athletically, and I am proud to say I will be attending Lewis University on a baseball scholarship.” ACTIVITIES Three new clubs join our many existing activities, reflecting the diverse outside interests of the St. Laurence student body.
