Dear Maize Grower,
As the maize season draws to a close, we wish you a successful harvest.
With rising feed and concentrate prices for both the dairy and beef sector, forage maize
has enjoyed growing popularity and its role in mixed ration continues to rise. For 2012
KWS has linked every variety with a ‘ration profile’ to indicate likely feed value and usage.
Based on an easy to reference table, with high starch early varieties suitable for 30-50%
inclusion, right through to over 70% for high ME, maincrop varieties.

Commanding Yields from KWS
New from KWS, Severus forage maize conquers all others for starch yield and earliness.
With yields of over 18t/ha DM and very early maturity, Severus offers one of the lowest cost
per tonne yields in its class.
Add to this its high value starch yield, in excess of 7 tonnes/ha, plus outstanding vigour (8.5)
and Severus reigns supreme.

For farmers requiring a short season maize variety with leading forage quality, Kontender is the
front runner. With leading starch yields of 6.5t/ha – Kontender offers higher returns than either
Ixxes, Acumen or Crescendo.
Giving early maturity, bulk yields and strong vigour Kontender should be No.1 for high starch
forage maize across dairy and beef diets.

Stand Out in any Maize Field
For heavy yields and early maturity Kreel stands out in any maize field.
Unlike the majority of NIAB listed very early varieties Kreel avoids the problem of a rapid
dry down at harvest. This helps reduce the risk of acidosis from excess starch in rations
with a high maize inclusion.
• Very Early: 36-37% dry matter at harvest (FAO 170)
• Slow dry down from 30%, preserving feed quality if harvest is delayed
• Leading energy values (equivalent to over 210,000 MJ/Ha)
Ascender
Pack a Punch for Feed Value
New from KWS, Ascender takes yield and feed value to new levels. With an excellent
combination of very high ME (11.4-11.8 MJ/Kg) and bulk yields exceeding 19t/ha DM,
Ascender is ready to drive feed values higher.
Add to this its above average starch levels with the benefit of strong early vigour (7.8)
and you’ll find Ascender easy to grow.

Konsensus provides growers with an excellent addition to any ration and can be harvested
for silage or grain maize. Its massive yield potential was noted in Kingshay results from 2010,
where the variety achieved in excess of 20.5t/ha DM.

With grain yields of over 10.5t/ha Lapriora delivers the lowest drying costs in its class and will
mature without the need for plastic. The variety offers early starch laydown out performing
newer varieties such as Garland or Acclaim.

Coryphee
A Flying Start to UK Grain Maize
Coryphee is a recently introduced grain maize from KWS. It delivers strong yield performance
with very early maturity – significantly ahead of other grain varieties used in the UK.
Coryphee is noted for its exceptional early vigour, offering rapid establishment and an earlier
drilling window.

Drilling Tips from KWS
The most critical aspect of growing a successful maize crop largely depends on the
conditions at and near to planting. Given the challenging drilling conditions in both 2010
and 2011, we have revisited the key decisions for drilling in 2012:
Soil preparation: Leave an open seedbed ideally ploughed and overwintered, to encourage
soils to restructure. Avoid overworking lighter soils as this may increase the chance of capped
seedbeds.
When to drill: Maize can be planted when soil temperatures reach 8˚C or higher. When
drilling into heavier or clay soils it is advisable to let soils reach 10˚C to encourage faster
emergence.
Depth: Over the past 3 years, drilling maize slightly deeper (6-7cm) has been encouraged
to force the root zone into moisture. Although emergence is slightly delayed by 3 or 4 days,
deeper drilling is very effective in promoting faster early growth, particularly in lighter soils.
In colder conditions and higher than average rainfall, shallow drilling (3.5-4cm) should
encourage faster germination and avoid the risk of crop damage from seedling stress.
Speed: Modern precision drills can readily work at 6km/h or higher. This should be reduced
to ensure accurate seed placement if drilling deeper.
Row width: The majority of UK maize crops are still drilled at standard row width of 75cm
(30”), however there is increasing interest in tighter rows to encourage heavier fresh yields.
Widths of 50cm (20”) are more popular, delivering a yield advantage using earlier varieties.
