Ever wondered why Catholics bless themselves with the sign of the cross, what they believe about communion, what’s up with all those saints and statues, and rosaries, and standing, sitting and kneeling? Why does Mary seem so important? Well, why not come and see and come and learn? This year’s RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Program begins on Thursday, September 8. There’s no cost, no obligation, no commitment necessary. In a series of friendly, informative and spiritually exciting classes we will explore the major things Catholics believe and why. Are you Catholic and interested in learning more about your faith? Vigésimo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Santa Cruz Church, Buda, Texas Jubilee Year of Mercy September 4, 2016 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time “If anyone comes to me without hating... father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his [or her] own life” (Luke 14:26). Hating? Can anyone imagine a less appropriate Gospel for the Jubilee Year of Mercy? But scholars call this Semitic hyperbole. Jesus exaggerates to jolt us into confronting life-changing challenges. Faced with conflicting loyalties, disciples must reorder priorities, even relationships, to give Jesus and the gospel’s demands first place. Today’s second reading presents a real-life example. Paul challenges his wealthy convert, Philemon, to welcome back Philemon’s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul has baptized in prison. Not only with unconditional forgiveness but with a counter-cultural, world-shattering change of status—as an equal. No, even more—a beloved brother in Christ. What in my life does the Jubilee Year of Mercy challenge me to “hate”—meaning reform, redo, even utterly revamp—so I can give everyone, no conditions, no exceptions, shockingly Christ-like love? The Prayer and Life Workshops by Father Ignacio Larrañaga invites you to live a personal encounter with a loving God through various methods of prayer, in which his love will walk you through many paths of faith, forgiveness, abandonment, joy & peace in Jesus Christ and also giving you a closer step to living a new life with Jesus in your heart. This Workshop can help you achieve spiritual growth and bring joy into your personal life. The workshop is in English. I-35 Corridor Project Santa Cruz Parish along with other churches in the area of the I-35 Corridor between San Antonio and Austin are participating in a project to better understand the issues that the families of our communities are experiencing in their daily lives. We have all witnessed the rapid changes that have taken place in this region over the past 20 years, changes that have created new pressures that affect our families. This project will train people of our parish to go into our community and engage all families around the challenges that they face: issues such as the dramatic growth of our communities, increased juvenile delinquency, issues that affect access to quality education and affordable health care, among others. Those who participate in the project will be trained to organize the people of the community to work together as neighbors through the church to identify these issues, develop effective solutions and work with public officials to address them. This project has the full support of Bishop Vazquez and will be similar to Austin Interfaith in Austin and Communities Organized for Public Service in San Antonio. Ramon Duran is the organizer who is working with Father and other pastors in the region. Participating churches are Catholic, Methodist, Lutheran, Baptist, and Unitarian in Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, New Braunfels, and Seguin. We have held four information sessions and will schedule two more to give everyone a chance to attend. These will be held September 6 (English) and September 7 (Spanish). Both will be held in Room 119 in the Education Building at 7:00 PM. For more information, call Ramon Duran 210-260-2175. Super Bingo that was scheduled for Sunday, September 11, 2016 has been cancelled. Re-scheduled date to be announced. We are excited that this festival looks to be even bigger than last year’s. Now, all we need to do is pray for good weather! Please get out and sell those raffle tickets!! Last Friday, we had our annual Back-to-School Family Dance. We raised over $1,300 for our Athletics department and over $400 for the Cardinal Club! Over 110 families had a great time dancing the night away! The school enrollment is up this year with 270 students in grades PK-3 through 8th grade. It was good to hear Bishop Joe Vasquez refer to our school as one of the largest in the Austin Diocese. We still have room in a few classes and will continue to enroll new students. Have a blessed week.
