Rotary club hears report from the Tides Inn
Although the Slatfords didn’t
know exactly where Irvington
was, it sounded warmer than
Lake Placid, N.Y. So they left
the minus 40-degree winters
and came to the The Tides
Resort. Speaking recently to the
Northern Neck Rotary Club,
he noted what a good decision
it was. The area has the most
friendly, hospitable people of
any of the many places around
the world where he has lived
and worked.
The real estate development
at the Tides is going nowhere
at the moment, he said.
The days of traditional
resorts like the Tides Inn to
survive on their own are gone,
explained Slatford. There is so
Tides Inn general manager
Gordon Slatford
much competition in the world
market. The habits of the
vacation market have changed
significantly. In the past, 75
percent of the guests would
go back to the same place;
whereas, now the percentage
of repeat guests is 30 percent. This means that 70 percent of
the effort goes into attracting
new business.
The current recession is of
course causing problems, he
said. In prior downturns, the
resort industry made significant reduction in base rates
in order to hold their markets. This reduction had long-term
effects. Guests who planned
to return expected to pay the
same rate after the recession
that they did during the downturn.
Thus, it takes several years
to bring the income stream
back to a profitable level. In
the current economic difficulties, resorts have chosen
to offer packages rather than
reduce base rates. For example, the price will include golf,
spa treatments, meals and
the like and when the market
turns, the resort will maintain
the rate and reduce the extras,
said Slatford.
The one aspect of resort
management that cannot be
neglected is quality, especially
in tough economic times, said
Slatford. This is the primary
goal of The Tides and they
have been rewarded by being
named the number one resort
in Virginia by Travel & Leisure magazine and number
35 in the U.S. The Tides customer satisfaction numbers are
soaring according to Slatford,
a fact directly attributable to
the staff. Slatford noted that
in today’s electronic times,
guests that are dissatisfied are
more likely to post a derogatory comment on a web page
rather than contact the resort. In this way, the resort is
unable to offer adjustments
which will in some way correct the customer’s opinion of
the service provided.
The closure of Captain
B’s was striclty an economic
necessity as was the sale of
the Miss Ann, he said. Neither were economically viable
to the resort. The Binnacle
Restaurant was physically in
poor condition and is tied to
the development plans for the
Lodge. The “New” Binnacle
will be tied to private owner-
ship of the condominiums as
perhaps the clubhouse, Slatford said. Slatford addressed the
sewage plant issue by saying
that there was never a plan to
provide free sewage treatment
to areas outside the Tides, but
only capacity. Slatford concluded by
saying he and The Tides are
aware of the importance of
the resort to the area— jobs,
revenue and, in many cases,
as the first introduction to
outsiders to the area. They do
not take that responsibility
lightly.
The club meets for breakfast Wednesdays at 7:30 a.m.
at Lee’s Restaurant in Kilmarnock.

Garden club tours Norfok Zoo
The Rappahannock Garden Club recently toured the gardens at the Norfolk Zoo with landscape
coordinator Marie Butler. She guided the group through colorful, innovative gardens using
organic and earth-friendly techniques. Butler presented “a lively and informative introduction
to gardening with elephants in her garden,” said club member Judy Ripley. Habitat affiliate
recognizes volunteers
The Lancaster/Northumberland Habitat for Humanity recently held a volunteer
appreciation event at Belle
Isle State Park.
“Our volunteers are unpaid,
not because their work has
no value, but because what
they do is priceless,” was the
message board members conveyed as hosts, said volunteer
coordinator Carol Shannon.
“The directors wished to
thank all of the hard-working
volunteers for every effort
they have made to support
Habitat’s mission of building
decent, affordable housing for
their partner families,” said
Shannon. “The main reason
I enjoy working with Habitat
for Humanity, is because of
the people I meet. Whether
it’s construction volunteers
or the working board members, I am exposed to people
who work quietly to do good.
I remain astounded by the
people Habitat attracts. They
come from all walks of life
and many different places,
but all are bound by their
strong social conscience,
compassion and respect.”
Special tributes
Special tributes were made
to seven volunteers who have
made outstanding and longterm contributions to the
local affiliate’s success.
The Rev. John Houghton was presented an award
for his founding role. He
accepted the donation of a
parcel of land, gathered interested citizens, and organized
the group that would in 1996
begin the work of Habitat
in the community. He continued his work as the first
president of the board, raised
money from private individuals and businesses, inspired
volunteers and donations of
materials, and a short three
years later, the first house
was built and dedicated.
Charlie Costello of Merry
Point was honored for his
long-term activism. He was
an officer on the original
volunteer board, and continues to serve as a construction
volunteer.
Lynnie
McCrobie
of
Weems received an award
for her long-term devotion
to Habitat’s mission. McCrobie recently retired from the
board. A former secretary,
she continues her volunteer
efforts presently as a construction volunteer and advisor. In addition, she regularly
participates in Habitat builds
in other states, and around
the world.
