University holds peaceful
demonstration against land grab

On Wednesday, July 13, students, staff, faculty and
alumni, held demonstrations along Thika Road,
against an attempt to grab the university's land. The
Chairman of the Board of Trustees Mr. Linus Gitahi,
Chancellor Dr. Manu Chandaria and the Vice
Chancellor Prof. Paul Zeleza, led the demonstration,
which began from our campus all the way to Muthaiga
Police Station. They then delivered a petition to the
Deputy Divisional Criminal Investigations Officer
(DCIO) Samuel Ogutu, urging the Directorate of
Criminal Investigations to investigate the grabbing of
the land.
The university’s first public protest since 1998, was
brought about after Maestro-connections Health
Systems, LLC claimed to have purchased the
university’s land in the Muthaiga North suburb last
month. The ownership of the 30-acre land which was
purchased by the University in 1999 from the Insurance
Company of East Africa (ICEA), is now under the
Ministry of Lands, the National Land Commission and
the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
In a statement emailed to the community before the
demonstration, Prof. Zeleza noted that “Grabbing
resources from educational institutions is a profound
assault on their ability to provide a quality education.” He
also pointed out that the grabbed land was already
earmarked for expanding institutional research
capacity, and build new student hostels, classrooms,
faculty offices, a sports complex, among other
facilities.
The Vice Chancellor indicated that the university will
continue pursuing all legal means to ensure that the
land remains with the university.

to raise funds
The annual USIU-Africa fun run was held on Saturday,
July 9 at the soccer pitch. Almost four hundred
participants from the university community, took part in
the 6.5 kilometer and 13 kilometer courses won by
Ibrahim Wango from Garden Estate Secondary School
and Francis Ting’aa (IR major) respectively.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees Mr. Linus Gitahi, led
senior university officials including Amb. Prof. Ruthie
Rono (DVC-Academic Affairs) and Mrs. Ritah Asunda
(DVC-Student Affairs and Enrollment Management), in
raising KES 400 000 for the university’s financial aid
programs.

2016 Career Fair to host

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Zeleza opened a
sensitization forum hosted by the Criminal Justice
Studies program in the School of Humanities and Social
Sciences, on Thursday, July 14. The event held in
partnership with CEFA - an Italian NGO working with
correctional facilities in Kenya - featured a panel
discussion which deliberated on the causes of
congestion in Kenyan prisons, focusing on all
components of the criminal justice system.
The audience which included members of the Criminal
Justice Studies faculty and key stakeholders in the
criminal justice system such as the Kenya Police Service,
the Kenya Prisons Service and the Judiciary, listened as
former inmates recounted their post – custodial
experience, providing valuable insight into necessary
reforms in the convict rehabilitation process.
The event was also attended by the Deputy Vice
Chancellor - Academic Affairs Amb. Prof. Ruthie Rono,
Assistant Inspector General (National Police Service) Mr.
James Mwaniki, Deputy Commissioner–General of
Prisons Mr. Benjamin Njoga and Deputy Registrar,
Supreme Court of Kenya Ms. Anne Asugah.
The forum resolved, inter alia, that our society, members
of the legal and law enforcement professions, and
operators of correctional facilities, had a joint
responsibility to decongest prisons, empower former
inmates to lead rehabilitated lives in society and engage
in constructive activities that improve lives. The Dean of
the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Dr. Tom
Onditi moderated the event, which also featured
performances by the Kenya Prisons Band.

YDF holds inter-varsity simulation exercise
The Young Diplomats Forum (YDF) held a two-day
inter-varsity simulation event on June 30 to July 1 at the
auditorium. The event which was addressed by the
Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Zeleza, featured a keynote
address by the Director of the Foreign Service Institute
Ambassador Simon Nabukwesi.
Over two hundred students from African Nazarene
University, Riara University, the University of Nairobi as
well as USIU-Africa, discussed issues surrounding
“Revision of Immigration Policies of States in Light of the
Refugee Crisis”.
The Director praised the partnership his institute has
with the International Relations programs of the School
of Humanities and Social Sciences, emphasizing his
desire to formalize the relationship with the university.

Fatma Ali (Program Director, International Relations)

Criminal Justice Studies majors visit INTERPOL
DVC - Academic Affairs Amb. Prof. Ruthie Rono will
officially open the Global Agribusiness Management
(GAME) Center Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop at
8am on Monday, July 18 at the GAME boardroom
(former classroom T).
Twenty East African agribusiness entrepreneurs
working with groups of farmers along the agricultural
value chain, have been selected to participate based
on their business plan pitches, their average annual
turnover and their target markets.
At the end of the four-day workshop, participants are
expected to have sharpened their business skills to
support enhanced enterprise growth and leadership
capacity.
The workshop will conclude with a talk by Mr. David
Ruchiu (Africa Director, Farm Concern International)
who will speak on “Agricultural Finance and Credit
Access”, while Ms. Anne Mbaabu (Director, Market
Access Program, Alliance for a Green Revolution), who
will also speak on “Strategic Planning for Micro & Small
Medium Enterprises”.
Department implements
ticketing system
USIU-Africa faculty, staff and students can now
procure services from the department of Marketing
and Communications through a LAN support ticketing
system. To place requests, any member of the
community
must
send
an
email
to
marketing@usiu.ac.ke
through
their
official
USIU-Africa email address, and will receive a response
indicating a ticket reference number that is essential in
tracking each request’s progress.
The system is expected to streamline delivery of
services provided by the department which include,
graphic and web design, event consultation, branding
and coverage, approval and printing of posters and
flyers, and updates to digital platforms such as
e-screens, website and social media.
