A word from the President
For all of our fans, the Canadiens continue to be a source of excitement, pride and inspiration, and we aim to meet all
of the needs of our fans – both on and off the ice. Indeed, every single member of our organization shares a common
sense of generosity, authenticity, accessibility and team spirit that goes beyond the call of duty, guiding our ongoing
dedication and commitment to the community.
Whether they are players, hockey management, ambassadors, stars of yesteryear, or employees, everyone who is a part of
the Montreal Canadiens Family demonstrates the team’s sense of common values through a multitude of gestures and
acts. These are a testimonial to the importance and to the sense of attachment that we feel for each and every Habs fan
in Quebec and beyond.
In “The Winning Goal”, we introduce you to all the initiatives that the team undertook during the 2005-06 season.
The club carried out its mandate in the heart of the community by getting youth interested and impassioned by hockey,
our national sport.
I want to thank all of our partners and fans who supported the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation.
Your generosity allowed us to donate close to $1 million to community organizations that help underprivileged kids.
We have already started working on the calendar
of events that will mark the 100th anniversary of
the Canadiens in 2009. We also intend, over the
next few years, to increase our community
activities so that the Centennial celebrations will
truly be an exceptional event, and one filled
with joy, pride and solidarity in the true image
of the rich heritage and tradition of the
Montreal Canadiens.

The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation helps underprivileged, sick and specialneeds children by contributing financial resources in the areas of poverty, health, well-being
and amateur sport.
Since its inception back in August 2000, the Foundation has donated $4 million to over
200 charitable endeavors from across the Province of Quebec who help children. In
supporting the various programs put forth by those charities, the Foundation has
contributed to their well-being by providing accessibility to material, equipment and
installations for them to enjoy.
With the valuable support of the Montreal Canadiens, its partners and the community, the
Foundation also relies on the commitment of a Board of Directors comprised of dedicated
individuals determined to make a difference.

The Jean Béliveau Trophy
Inaugurated in October 2003, the Jean Béliveau Trophy is awarded annually to a Canadiens
player who has demonstrated stellar community involvement and spirit. The Montreal
Canadiens Children’s Foundation donates $25,000, on behalf of the recipient of the Jean
Béliveau Trophy, to a Quebec non-profit organization that assists children.
In 2005, the winners of the coveted award were 18 women who participated in the Mount
Kilimandjaro expedition to benefit the Foundation, which culminated in the successful
ascension to the top of the treacherous mountain, on February 15, 2005. The women
decided to donate $25,000 to the On the Tip of the Toes Foundation during a special
ceremony at the Bell Centre, which was attended by members of the non-profit group.

Teamwork
The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation is aware that there is always a great need
in the community, and benefits from a committed partnership and successful initiatives
that allow the Foundation to fulfill its mandate.
DESJARDINS SECURITIES
Desjardins Securities is a tireless and devoted partner of the Foundation. In its four-year
involvement, Desjardins Securities donated more than $1 milllion to the Foundation.
Desjardins Securities’ support is spearheaded by its Commissions Day Campaign, where its
brokers, division of institutional and online brokerage, as well as strategic capital, donate
their commissions from one day in order to assist children in need. On January 25, 2006,
Desjardins Securities’ Commissions Day helped raise $300,141.

activities and one of the most important fund-raising events for the Foundation. In
September 2005, 288 golfers hit the links at the Laval-sur-le-Lac Golf Club. Their
exceptional generosity, combined with the enthusiastic support of the Foundation’s
sponsors led to a record-setting total of $311,332 raised in the name of charity.

GAME NIGHTS AT THE BELL CENTRE
For the past five seasons, the Foundation has organized two
fund-raising activities – a lottery and silent auctions – during
Canadiens home games at the Bell Centre.
The Foundation’s lottery gives Canadiens fans the chance to win
$1,500 on game night. This past season, more than $60,000 in
prizes was given to winners. Collectors and fans who like to
collect memorabilia were able to get their hands on unique
items, thanks to silent auctions held at the Bell Centre.
We were also pleasantly able to observe that hockey fans – happy
to see the return of their game after the lockout – renewed their
support for the Foundation by participating and giving
generously during silent auctions and lotteries, thus helping
the Foundation raise more than $300,000.
The Foundation thanks the following groups for their availability and their enthusiasm
during the lottery ticket sales campaign:
Avalanche du Québec
Axion de Montréal
Cavaliers Bois-de-Boulogne

THE WIVES’ COLLECTION
Something new was unveiled during the 2005-06 season. The
players’ wives’ collection – a new line of women’s clothing
designed by the Canadiens Consumer Products Department, in
collaboration with the wives and girlfriends of Habs
players. The collection was accompanied by red
bracelets, which sold for $2 each. The campaign was
very successful, and $50,000 from sales generated
by the collection and the bracelets was given to the
Foundation.

VISIT TO PEDIATRIC HOSPITALS
On December 6, 2005, Canadiens players and
coaching staff visited sick children at Montreal’s
two pediatric hospitals. This visit marked the
40th consecutive year that the team has gathered
at Sainte-Justine Hospital. During this visit, the
players stood on the stage of the hospital’s
packed auditorium to sing carols before meeting
privately with the hospital’s children.
Meanwhile, at the Montreal Children’s Hospital,
players visited the young patients in their
rooms, enjoying precious moments that brought
joy to the hearts of the children.

this event. On this day, players and their wives
each sponsored a group of five or six children.
An afternoon full of fun was had by the
children, who frolicked with Habs mascot

CANADIENS ANNUAL BLOOD DONOR CLINIC
Following in the footsteps of tradition, players, coaches and ambassadors with the
Montreal Canadiens participated in the team’s 24th Annual Blood Donor Clinic, held on
March 14, 2006. Five hundred and fifteen people – including 28 per cent who were
first-time donors – went to the Bell Centre to give blood for Héma-Québec. Throughout the
day, Habs players and former stars mingled with donors, thanking them for their
participation, and signing autographs.

Hockey Fights Cancer
Each year, Montreal Canadiens players participate in Hockey
Fights Cancer, an NHL cancer public awareness campaign. A
pre-game ceremony at the Bell Centre on January 3, 2006 that
launched the campaign proved to be a moving moment, as
Habs captain Saku Koivu and the great Jean Béliveau
presented a $25,000 cheque to Jonathan Grondin and Benjamin Garofano of Leucan. The
money, raised by the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation, was donated in the name
of the team’s captain, 2003-04 recipient of the Jean Béliveau Trophy.
A BLANKIE FOR GABIE
Prior to the January 7 and 14 games at the Bell Centre, Canadiens players’ wives and
girlfriends participated in the Blankie for Gabie blanket drive. The event allowed Leucan
to give more than 200 blankets to children treated in the main pediatric oncology centres
of Quebec: Sainte-Justine, the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the Centre Mère-Enfant of
CHUQ in Quebec and CHUS Sherbrooke. Lucie Boivin, wife of the President of the
Montreal Canadiens, was at Sainte-Justine on January 26 to distribute the blankets.
“As part of our welcoming program, each family whose child has been diagnosed with cancer receives a kit.
The families are always pleasantly surprised to see that the kit includes a blanket, which provides warmth
and comfort for their sick child. Later, I regularly see these children in the hospitals, wrapped up in
their colourful blankets, as they go around from floor to floor, or at other clinics as they wait to go for
their treatments.”

COPS AGAINST CANCER
For a fourth consecutive year, the Canadiens teamed up with the Canadian Cancer Society
for the Annual Cops Against Cancer shave-a-thon. The event took place on January 16,
2006 during the game between the Habs and the Dallas Stars. More than 200 participants
got their heads shaved in exchange for a donation, allowing the Canadian Cancer Society
to raise close to $62,000.
A TRIBUTE TO THE CHILDREN OF
To conclude the activities that took place during January, the Canadiens dedicated their last
home game of the month to the children of Leucan. The team invited children and parents
who were guests of Bell Centre private suite holders to a pre-game reception. For the
occasion, Natalie Choquette sang both national anthems. She was accompanied on the ice
by two children who have benefited from Leucan. Between periods, the guests in José
Théodore’s suite enjoyed Zamboni rides. In all, more than 40 children spent an
unforgettable evening at the Bell Centre on January 31, 2006.

YOUPPI!
History was made on September 16, 2005. On
that day, Youppi! joined the ranks of the
Montreal Canadiens as the team’s first official
mascot. In becoming a full-fledged member of
the Habs, Youppi! played a supportive role in the
club’s community-relations activities – a job he
smoothly carried out with full diligence. The
public’s verdict is in: the jolly mascot is a hit
with fans of all ages!
Whether it was his gung-ho cheerleading
exploits during Habs games at the Bell Centre
or public appearances with the team, Youppi!
was a key draw during special events, and the
fans couldn’t get enough of the furry fellow. Young children who spent time with him and

JAMBOREE
The Canadiens’ 2005-06 season was successfully launched in September with the annual
Jamboree. Some 10,000 happy fans participated in the special celebration, which was
attended by current Habs and players of yesteryear.
The Jamboree began with a team practice open to the public, followed by an autograph
session, where 10,000 fans flocked around their favourite stars and collected their prized
mementoes. Young fans also had the opportunity to play a pick-up game of ball hockey
with members of the Canadiens. That same evening, 1,200 Habs enthusiasts received free
tickets to attend the game between the Canadiens and the Thrashers at the Bell Centre.
But that’s not all. As a gesture to celebrate the return of NHL hockey after a one-year
hiatus, the Canadiens handed out free tickets to some 500 fans to attend Tuesday night
games at the Bell Centre throughout the season.

THE CANADIENS OPEN PRACTICE
Canadiens players and coaches gave 21,000 Habs fans reason to smile and cheer during
the team’s public practice at the Bell Centre on January 8 – an event that put hockey skills
and fun on full display.
The afternoon got under way with a hockey clinic, led by former Habs defenseman Gaston
Gingras. The clinic starred players from four minor hockey teams who were taught some
nifty hockey skills. Three members of the current Canadiens squad also took part in the
exercise, offering tips and suggestions, including how best to find the net when taking
part in a shootout.
Following the clinic, the 2005-06 Canadiens were introduced to the fans. The players were
split up into four groups before participating in various drills, which featured the art of
winning face-offs and how to improve puck-control and stick-handling.
As a bonus treat, the players concluded the special event by tossing various souvenirs into
the crowd. Fans went home with a variety of items, including toques and pucks, not to
mention an unforgettable memory of some excellent hockey and lots of fun.

COMMUNITY
SUPPORT
DONATION IN-KIND PROGRAM
Each year, the Donation in-kind Program allows the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club to
help more than 600 non-profit, sports-associated community groups. The group receives
a signed Habs item which is used to raise funds through an auction, a draw or to be given
as door prizes. This is a valuable program that allows these organizations to raise muchneeded funds for their programs.
