Indeed, every single member of our organization shares a common sense of generosity, authenticity, accessibility and team spirit that goes beyond the call of duty, guiding our ongoing dedication and commitment to the community. Whether they are players, hockey management, ambassadors, stars of yesteryear, or employees, everyone who is a part of the Montreal Canadiens Family demonstrates the team’s sense of common values through a multitude of gestures and acts. These are a testimonial to the importance and to the sense of attachment that we feel for each and every Habs fan in Quebec and beyond. In “The Winning Goal”, we introduce you to all the initiatives that the team undertook during the 2005-06 season. The club carried out its mandate in the heart of the community by getting youth interested and impassioned by hockey, our national sport. I want to thank all of our partners and fans who supported the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation. Your generosity allowed us to donate close to $1 million to community organizations that help underprivileged kids. We have already started working on the calendar of events that will mark the 100th anniversary of the Canadiens in 2009. We also intend, over the next few years, to increase our community activities so that the Centennial celebrations will truly be an exceptional event, and one filled with joy, pride and solidarity in the true image of the rich heritage and tradition of the Montreal Canadiens. President Club de hockey Canadien [ 1 ] Portrait The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation helps underprivileged, sick and specialneeds children by contributing financial resources in the areas of poverty, health, well-being and amateur sport. Since its inception back in August 2000, the Foundation has donated $4 million to over 200 charitable endeavors from across the Province of Quebec who help children. In supporting the various programs put forth by those charities, the Foundation has contributed to their well-being by providing accessibility to material, equipment and installations for them to enjoy. With the valuable support of the Montreal Canadiens, its partners and the community, the Foundation also relies on the commitment of a Board of Directors comprised of dedicated individuals determined to make a difference. As part of this initiative, the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation donates $25,000 behalf of the honoured player to a Quebec organization that serves needy or underprivileged children. During the 2005-06 season, the players whose jerseys were retired and their families chose to support the following organizations: Yvan COURNOYER Dickie MOORE The Bernard GEOFFRION Family Leucan ($12 500) — The Montreal Shriners Hospital For Children — An orthopedic pediatric hospital that provides specialized care for children. A non-profit organization whose mission is to promote greater well-being and healing among children with cancer and to provide support for their families. Le Camp Carowanis ($12 500) — A special camp for diabetic children that fosters outdoor fun, lots of sports and help in dealing with diabetes. The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation donates $25,000, on behalf of the recipient of the Jean Béliveau Trophy, to a Quebec non-profit organization that assists children. In 2005, the winners of the coveted award were 18 women who participated in the Mount Kilimandjaro expedition to benefit the Foundation, which culminated in the successful ascension to the top of the treacherous mountain, on February 15, 2005. The women decided to donate $25,000 to the On the Tip of the Toes Foundation during a special ceremony at the Bell Centre, which was attended by members of the non-profit group. [ 7 ] 1 N° A F O U N D AT I O N F O R C H I L D R E N Teamwork The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation is aware that there is always a great need in the community, and benefits from a committed partnership and successful initiatives that allow the Foundation to fulfill its mandate. DESJARDINS SECURITIES Desjardins Securities is a tireless and devoted partner of the Foundation. In its four-year involvement, Desjardins Securities donated more than $1 milllion to the Foundation. Desjardins Securities’ support is spearheaded by its Commissions Day Campaign, where its brokers, division of institutional and online brokerage, as well as strategic capital, donate their commissions from one day in order to assist children in need. On January 25, 2006, Desjardins Securities’ Commissions Day helped raise $300,141. In September 2005, 288 golfers hit the links at the Laval-sur-le-Lac Golf Club. Their exceptional generosity, combined with the enthusiastic support of the Foundation’s sponsors led to a record-setting total of $311,332 raised in the name of charity. The Foundation is grateful to the following organizations for having donated the profits from their respective golf tournaments: • • • • • • • Les Restaurants La Cage aux Sports Omnium Guy Carbonneau – Club Multigolf 21 Omnium Yvan Cournoyer – ClubLink Omnium Canpar - ClubLink Selwyn House School Alumni and Friends Mercedes-Benz Canada Financière Banque Nationale [ 11 ] 1 N° A F O U N D AT I O N F O R C H I L D R E N GAME NIGHTS AT THE BELL CENTRE For the past five seasons, the Foundation has organized two fund-raising activities – a lottery and silent auctions – during Canadiens home games at the Bell Centre. The Foundation’s lottery gives Canadiens fans the chance to win $1,500 on game night. This past season, more than $60,000 in prizes was given to winners. Collectors and fans who like to collect memorabilia were able to get their hands on unique items, thanks to silent auctions held at the Bell Centre. We were also pleasantly able to observe that hockey fans – happy to see the return of their game after the lockout – renewed their support for the Foundation by participating and giving generously during silent auctions and lotteries, thus helping the Foundation raise more than $300,000. The Foundation thanks the following groups for their availability and their enthusiasm during the lottery ticket sales campaign: Avalanche du Québec Axion de Montréal Cavaliers Bois-de-Boulogne Cégep St-Laurent Cobras de Terrebonne Collège Brébeuf Corps de Cadets 2927 Anjou Équipe Quest Escadron 643 de St-Hubert HEC Liaisonneuve Loews Le Concorde Lynx Collège Édouard-Montpetit McGill - Kappa Altha Theta McGill Cancer Society Université de Montréal THE WIVES’ COLLECTION Something new was unveiled during the 2005-06 season. The players’ wives’ collection – a new line of women’s clothing designed by the Canadiens Consumer Products Department, in collaboration with the wives and girlfriends of Habs players. The collection was accompanied by red bracelets, which sold for $2 each. The campaign was very successful, and $50,000 from sales generated by the collection and the bracelets was given to the Foundation. This visit marked the 40th consecutive year that the team has gathered at Sainte-Justine Hospital. During this visit, the players stood on the stage of the hospital’s packed auditorium to sing carols before meeting privately with the hospital’s children. Meanwhile, at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, players visited the young patients in their rooms, enjoying precious moments that brought joy to the hearts of the children. A young patient of the Montreal Children’s CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY FOR THE CLUB DES PETITS DÉJEUNERS DU QUÉBEC Hospital is cheared up by a clowning Alex Kovalev. On December 12, 2005, the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club welcomed 120 children from the Club des petits déjeuners du Québec for an unforgettable day at the Bell Centre. It was the sixth consecutive year that the team has held this event. On this day, players and their wives each sponsored a group of five or six children. An afternoon full of fun was had by the children, who frolicked with Habs mascot Youppi! on the ice. “I just want to thank you for your involvement with the children of the Club des petits déjeuners du Québec. On December 12, my son lived an unforgettable day with his heroes. Thank you and happy holidays.” — Philippe’s mother. [ 16 ] Ginette and Francis Bouillon having a great time with their young friends. 2 N° THE CANADIENS IN THE COMMUNITY CANADIENS ANNUAL BLOOD DONOR CLINIC Following in the footsteps of tradition, players, coaches and ambassadors with the Montreal Canadiens participated in the team’s 24th Annual Blood Donor Clinic, held on March 14, 2006. Five hundred and fifteen people – including 28 per cent who were first-time donors – went to the Bell Centre to give blood for Héma-Québec. Throughout the day, Habs players and former stars mingled with donors, thanking them for their participation, and signing autographs. Mark Streit, David Aebischer and Cristobal Huet. Réjean Houle stopped by to give the gift of life. [ 17 ] 2 N° THE CANADIENS IN THE COMMUNITY Hockey Fights Cancer Each year, Montreal Canadiens players participate in Hockey Fights Cancer, an NHL cancer public awareness campaign. A pre-game ceremony at the Bell Centre on January 3, 2006 that launched the campaign proved to be a moving moment, as Habs captain Saku Koivu and the great Jean Béliveau presented a $25,000 cheque to Jonathan Grondin and Benjamin Garofano of Leucan. The money, raised by the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation, was donated in the name of the team’s captain, 2003-04 recipient of the Jean Béliveau Trophy. A BLANKIE FOR GABIE Prior to the January 7 and 14 games at the Bell Centre, Canadiens players’ wives and girlfriends participated in the Blankie for Gabie blanket drive. The event allowed Leucan to give more than 200 blankets to children treated in the main pediatric oncology centres of Quebec: Sainte-Justine, the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the Centre Mère-Enfant of CHUQ in Quebec and CHUS Sherbrooke. Lucie Boivin, wife of the President of the Montreal Canadiens, was at Sainte-Justine on January 26 to distribute the blankets. “As part of our welcoming program, each family whose child has been diagnosed with cancer receives a kit. The families are always pleasantly surprised to see that the kit includes a blanket, which provides warmth and comfort for their sick child. Later, I regularly see these children in the hospitals, wrapped up in their colourful blankets, as they go around from floor to floor, or at other clinics as they wait to go for their treatments.” — Annie Champoux, Leucan Liaison Officer. [ 18 ] 2 N° THE CANADIENS IN THE COMMUNITY COPS AGAINST CANCER For a fourth consecutive year, the Canadiens teamed up with the Canadian Cancer Society for the Annual Cops Against Cancer shave-a-thon. The event took place on January 16, 2006 during the game between the Habs and the Dallas Stars. More than 200 participants got their heads shaved in exchange for a donation, allowing the Canadian Cancer Society to raise close to $62,000. A TRIBUTE TO THE CHILDREN OF To conclude the activities that took place during January, the Canadiens dedicated their last home game of the month to the children of Leucan. The team invited children and parents who were guests of Bell Centre private suite holders to a pre-game reception. For the occasion, Natalie Choquette sang both national anthems. She was accompanied on the ice by two children who have benefited from Leucan. Between periods, the guests in José Théodore’s suite enjoyed Zamboni rides. In all, more than 40 children spent an unforgettable evening at the Bell Centre on January 31, 2006. [ 19 ] 2 N° THE CANADIENS IN THE COMMUNITY A Dedicated Family The Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club’s commitment to its community is a value that is embraced by every member of this great family. The Gillett family, the Canadiens’ management, players, their wives and girlfriends, the coaching and training staff, the team’s ambassadors, the team’s stars of yesteryear, as well as all employees – all of these people are committed to making a difference in the life of their fellow man. Pierre Boivin and Dickie Moore visited brokers and businesspeople who participated in the Desjardins Securities Commissions Day. This year, Steve Bégin and his family were spokespersons for the team’s Blood Donor Clinic. Steve and his wife Amélie spent an entire afternoon greeting blood donors and talking with fans who came to the Bell Centre for the event. They’re dedicated, they’re enthusiastic, and they’re diehard Habs fans! Team owner George N. Gillett and his wife Rose love to meet with Canadiens fans of all ages. Rose Gillett and daughter-in-law Lauren were members of the Mount Kilimandjaro expedition – a trek that helped raise $455,000 for the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation in February 2005. [ 20 ] 2 N° THE CANADIENS IN THE COMMUNITY Canadiens Alumni President Réjean Houle presented bursaries to young hockey players as they were honoured by the Club Médaille d’or in February 2006. The team has supported this organization for a number of years in an effort to encourage amateur athletes in Quebec. Young hockey players who excelled on the ice and in the classroom were honoured with Guy Lafleur Awards of Excellence. The awards were presented in collaboration with Molson and Jocelyn Proteau, President of the selection committee. Mike Komisarek, who has experienced firsthand the effects of cancer in his family, was the team’s spokesperson during the Cops Against Cancer campaign. The rugged defenseman didn’t hesitate to shave his head in solidarity with persons who have been affected by cancer. Team captain Saku Koivu’s involvement and dedication to the cause continues, season after season, as he regularly meets with young people who are fighting cancer. Canadiens Ambassador Guy Lafleur continues to dazzle fans with his on-ice prowess during fund-raising hockey games, such as this one on March 30 in Pierrefonds. Proceeds from this game went to the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation and the West Island Community Shares organization. [ 21 ] 2 N° THE CANADIENS IN THE COMMUNITY Canadiens players’ wives and girlfriends participated in the 9th Montreal edition of the CIBC Run For The Cure, with profits going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. More than 14,000 runners took to the streets of Montreal on a sunny October 1 afternoon. The event raised nearly $2 million. During Leucan’s 2006 Shaved Head Challenge, Henri Richard followed up on his April announcement that he would have his famous locks chopped off. In getting his head shaved, Richard sparked the interest of generous Quebecers, who pledged in his name a total of $100,000 for Leucan and children with cancer. Jean Béliveau, Guy Lafleur, Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer and Réjean Houle – five ambassadors and ex-hockey greats who proudly wore the Canadiens jersey. They are among 200 players who helped bring the Habs to the heights of hockey greatness during countless NHL seasons. Together, these men maintain the team’s rich tradition and proud excellence by devoting more than 1,700 hours to communities throughout Quebec on behalf of the Canadiens. Lucie Masse followed the lead of numerous other Montreal Canadiens employees and gave the gift of life during the team’s Annual Blood Donor Clinic. She has been a member of the organization for the past 12 years. [ 22 ] 3 N° EVERYONE’S GAME [ 23 ] 3 N° E V E RY O N E ’ S G A M E YOUPPI! History was made on September 16, 2005. On that day, Youppi! joined the ranks of the Montreal Canadiens as the team’s first official mascot. In becoming a full-fledged member of the Habs, Youppi! played a supportive role in the club’s community-relations activities – a job he smoothly carried out with full diligence. The public’s verdict is in: the jolly mascot is a hit with fans of all ages! Whether it was his gung-ho cheerleading exploits during Habs games at the Bell Centre or public appearances with the team, Youppi! was a key draw during special events, and the fans couldn’t get enough of the furry fellow. Young children who spent time with him and posed for photographs with the new Hab will not soon forget their Youppi! moments. He may well be a rookie in the eyes of the organization, but one thing is for sure: Youppi! has won the hearts of everyone! The on-ice Christmas celebration with the Club des petits déjeuners. [ 24 ] 3 N° E V E RY O N E ’ S G A M E SAPUTO FUTURE CANADIENS FAN CLUB Steve Bégin and Francis Bouillon led the charge for the Saputo Future Canadiens Fan Club during the 2005-06 season, with the two players acting as honorary captains of the program. Habs goalie Cristobal Huet and defenseman Mike Komisarek will take over as co-captains for the upcoming season. The Fan Club is aimed at children between the age of 5 and 16 years old, and offers a full slate of exclusive events and contests for participating Canadiens Fan Club members. One special event is “Skate with the Canadiens” which allowed some 2,000 members of the Fan Club to take part in an afternoon of skating at the Bell Centre with players of the Montreal Canadiens. Moreover, members of the Fan Club also had the opportunity to be a part of the pre-game ceremonies, thanks to the “Be Part of the Team” program, sponsored by McCain. The event allowed young fans to greet Canadiens players as they stepped onto the Bell Centre ice before a game. [ 25 ] 3 N° E V E RY O N E ’ S G A M E LRF PROGRAM More than 27,000 Novice and Bantam hockey league girls and boys participated in the Learn, Respect and Fun (LRF) program, launched by the Montreal Canadiens in collaboration with Hockey Quebec. The players signed a contract that also included the signature of Bob Gainey and the official seal of approval from the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club. The contract is a pledge of team spirit, good sportsmanship and respect, to be honoured by both the players and the coaching staff. LRF teams had the chance to take part in several activities during the season. The LRF Tour A truck bearing the Canadiens team colours travelled throughout Quebec to promote the LRF program among young Habs fans. Mascot Youppi! was also a member of the LRF squad, joining ex-Hab Gaston Gingras, who was part of the 1986 Stanley Cup winning Canadiens. Gingras is the LRF’s captain. Tim Hortons’ Coaching Day The third annual Tim Hortons Coaching Day brought a record-setting 500 Novice and Bantam coaches from the four corners of Quebec to the Bell Centre on October 2 for a full day of training by the Montreal Canadiens coaching staff and Hockey Quebec specialists. Esso Minor Hockey Festival Fourteen randomly selected teams involved in the LRF program participated in the Esso Minor Hockey Festival on January 7. The youths attended a Canadiens game in the afternoon and then hit the Bell Centre ice themselves for friendly pick-up games. LRF Gala The LRF Gala underlined the sustained efforts of deserving teams, namely the Jets-2 Novice A from St-Hubert named LRF Team of the year. [ 26 ] 3 N° E V E RY O N E ’ S G A M E JAMBOREE The Canadiens’ 2005-06 season was successfully launched in September with the annual Jamboree. Some 10,000 happy fans participated in the special celebration, which was attended by current Habs and players of yesteryear. The Jamboree began with a team practice open to the public, followed by an autograph session, where 10,000 fans flocked around their favourite stars and collected their prized mementoes. Young fans also had the opportunity to play a pick-up game of ball hockey with members of the Canadiens. That same evening, 1,200 Habs enthusiasts received free tickets to attend the game between the Canadiens and the Thrashers at the Bell Centre. But that’s not all. As a gesture to celebrate the return of NHL hockey after a one-year hiatus, the Canadiens handed out free tickets to some 500 fans to attend Tuesday night games at the Bell Centre throughout the season. [ 27 ] 3 N° E V E RY O N E ’ S G A M E THE CANADIENS OPEN PRACTICE Canadiens players and coaches gave 21,000 Habs fans reason to smile and cheer during the team’s public practice at the Bell Centre on January 8 – an event that put hockey skills and fun on full display. The afternoon got under way with a hockey clinic, led by former Habs defenseman Gaston Gingras. The clinic starred players from four minor hockey teams who were taught some nifty hockey skills. Three members of the current Canadiens squad also took part in the exercise, offering tips and suggestions, including how best to find the net when taking part in a shootout. Following the clinic, the 2005-06 Canadiens were introduced to the fans. The players were split up into four groups before participating in various drills, which featured the art of winning face-offs and how to improve puck-control and stick-handling. As a bonus treat, the players concluded the special event by tossing various souvenirs into the crowd. Fans went home with a variety of items, including toques and pucks, not to mention an unforgettable memory of some excellent hockey and lots of fun. [ 28 ] 4 N° COMMUNITY SUPPORT DONATION IN-KIND PROGRAM Each year, the Donation in-kind Program allows the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club to help more than 600 non-profit, sports-associated community groups. The group receives a signed Habs item which is used to raise funds through an auction, a draw or to be given as door prizes. This is a valuable program that allows these organizations to raise muchneeded funds for their programs.
