2014-15 Annual Report - Christ the King Catholic School
A n n u a l R e p o r t 2 0 1 4 - 2 0 1 5 Foundations in Faith THE CHRIST KING CATHOLIC SCHOOL Christ the King catholic school A Letter from Monsignor Richard Paperini A n n u a l R e p o r t 2 0 1 4 - 2 0 1 5 Dear Christ the King Family, “Teaching is a beautiful job; as it allows you to see the growth day by day of people entrusted to your care. It is a little like being parents, at least spiritually. It is a great responsibility. A commitment of this type may inculcate apprehension, but remember that no teacher is ever alone, his or her work is shared with other colleagues and with all the education community to which they belong.” ~Pope Francis As we look back on another academic year, we reflect on the hard work and dedication of all those who have come before us to create the legacy of Christ the King Catholic School. The 2014-15 school year was marked by many outstanding accomplishments by our administration, teachers, staff, students, parents and parishioners. I am continually humbled by the work of so many in our community to create that critical foundation of faith our students have as a central focus in their lives. Our Catholic identity is what inspires us. Our belief in something greater than ourselves is what motivates us to do more, be more and give more. Our willingness to share our faith in God in an environment that enriches our students academically and spiritually is what we have been called to do. This past year was also one of transition for our school as we wished a fond farewell to our Principal of five years, Mr. Joe Bridgeman and our Administrative Assistant of nine years, Mrs. Joyce Auxier. I wish to thank them both for all they have done for our students and families over the years. We have been blessed to welcome Mr. Chris George, as our new Principal, and Mrs. Tami Holen, as our Administrative Assistant, at Christ the King. It is a testament to our dedicated staff and to our parish and school families to see how they have both been embraced and welcomed to our Christ the King family. We are a community of faith. We are a spiritual family. The impact your presence has on the lives of our students is profound; your financial contributions, your hours of donated service and your commitment to our school’s future are all critical pieces of our school’s strong foundation. Catholic education is not only the work of the dedicated staff of Christ the King, nor solely the work of those parents who send their children to our school. Rather, it is the work of the entire community. A n n u a l Mission Christ the King Catholic School strengthens the God-given capabilities of each The success of Christ the King Catholic School is due in no small way to your generosity, love and support. Your dedication to providing a faith-filled education for all who seek one, is truly a gift to our Christ the King family. child in a loving Please be assured of my prayers for you. I am indeed grateful. Students experience Catholic community. Sincerely in Christ Jesus, an environment that Rev. Msgr. Richard Paperini Pastor is gospel-centered and R e p o r t 2 0 1 4 - 2 0 1 5 service oriented. from the Principal a message As we look back on our 2014-2015 school year, I wish to acknowledge the profound impact Mr. Joe Bridgeman has had on the development and advancement of Christ the King Catholic School. I am forever grateful for his leadership and vision. I feel blessed to continue the work he started with such dedicated educators who enlighten our students’ minds and fill their hearts with the Spirit of the Lord. We had an unusual beginning to the 2015 school year with the transition of leadership occurring after the start of school. However this served as a tremendous opportunity for our faculty and staff to work together and model excellent collaborative skills for our students and the parish community. On behalf of the staff, students and families of Christ the King Catholic School, thank you very much for all your support and allowing us to live our mission each and every day. A highlight of our 2014-2015 school year was when our faculty and staff welcomed the accreditation team from the Western Catholic Education Association for our site visit. This visit was the culmination of nearly 2 years of work by our staff. We are so proud of the fine work our staff put forth in creating our 120 page accreditation document. The Report of Findings and subsequent action plan are reviewed in detail under our Significant Accomplishments for 2014-15 in our annual report. Our six year approval is a reflection of the dedication and commitment of our teachers, staff and school community. As I acclimate myself to the traditions and culture of our school, one of the first things to stand out is how well prayer and service are integrated into our curriculum. Students lead us through daily prayers and reflections each morning before the start of school, apply lessons of scripture to contemporary issues in class activities, prayer services and Mass are organized and led each week by classes, and service projects are ongoing throughout the year so that students may practice their faith and spirituality in today’s society. Our teachers and support staff work hard to ensure lessons are engaging and relevant for students who consistently strive to demonstrate their mastery of knowledge and skills. We are proud of our implementation of 1:1 technology with students using iPads in order to help them access information, develop skills and demonstrate understanding. Additionally, teachers and support staff effectively utilize data to ensure students receive instruction tailored for their needs and unique abilities. We currently implement two tests, AIMSweb and STAR, benchmark and progress monitoring systems, which both allow us to evaluate and track all our students’ academic progress as well as the effectiveness of our curriculum. These systems prove vital in our ability to differentiate learning for students and ensures Christ the King will continue serving diverse learners In addition to the excellent instruction our students receive in the core subjects we are blessed to provide students with opportunities to learn in the following disciplines; Religion, Spanish, physical education, music, choir, art, technology and library. We are also able to provide all students with lessons in counseling and health while middle school students are able to choose electives such as yearbook and Christian leadership. We are very grateful for the support our school has received in the past from all of you and pray in thanksgiving for all your generous gifts that continue to bless and enrich our school. May God bless you, be gracious to you and give you peace. Our success demonstrates effective use of the prior accreditation findings to drive school improvement and support high achievement of all students. The action plan that will drive school improvement as we move forward into the next accreditation cycle includes three critical goals. Goal #1: Christ the King Catholic School faculty and staff will strengthen student achievement of School-wide Learning Expectations. Our faculty and staff have worked hard over the last three years to revise the School-wide Learning Expectations and make them a living part of the school program. We are committed to forming our students into lifelong learners who possess integrity and deep sense of spirituality. This goal will help us fulfill our mission of, “strengthening the God-given capabilities of each child in a loving Catholic community.” We are committed to developing these characteristics in our students through the development and refinement of our curriculum and teacher and staff modeling. Goal #2: Christ the King Catholic School faculty and staff will increase student learning by creating and facilitating smoother transitions between grade levels. Teachers and administrators are actively engaged in the analysis of student test score data in order to improve teaching and student learning. Creating a framework for teachers to communicate about student learning as they matriculate through Christ the King will create more clarity during grade level transitions, inform students and empower parents. This goal will help us fulfill our philosophy of, “affirming parents are the primary educators of their children.” Goal #3: “Christ the King Catholic School faculty and staff will focus professional development on Understanding by Design in order to increase teacher effectiveness and student learning.” Educational research confirms that the strongest indicator of student learning is directly correlated to the proficiency of the teacher. Continuously improving and refining the knowledge and skills of our professional staff, together and through a structured framework over time, will enable all our students to deepen their understanding and demonstrate growth. This goal aligns closely with the school’s mission, “to strengthen the God-given capabilities of each child in a loving Catholic community” and the core philosophy to “challenge students to achieve their fullest potential as we prepare them for future levels of education. Foundations in Faith Significant Accomplishments 2 0 1 4 - 2 0 1 5 Foundations in Faith Classroom Renovation Project - As Christ the King Catholic School celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, the need to address facility upgrades and renovations within the school had become a major focus. With this in mind, the School Advisory Council worked closely with both the school and parish administration and members of the Parish Capital Campaign Fundraising Committee to establish a school facilities improvement plan that is included as one of the school’s long-term strategic goals. The top priority identified by the School Advisory Council included renovating the 1st -5th grade classrooms. With this in mind, the school decided to complete these projects over a two-year period. The Foundations in Faith Classroom Renovation Project consisted of: Phase 1 2013-2014 - 1st and 2nd classroom renovations - $110,000 Phase 2 2014-2015 - 3rd, 4th, and 5th classroom renovation - $110,000 The classroom renovations followed a similar model of the recent Kindergarten upgrade and included new floors, new paint, new cabinets, new drop ceiling grids with energy efficient lighting, new windows as needed, and electrical prep for future heating and cooling units. Due to the high cost of these renovations, these projects were not able to be included in the school’s budget. Last year, with our jog-a-thon and auction paddle bid, we successfully raised a net of approximately $95,000 for the renovation of the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms. After the completion of Phase 1, we had $15,000 remaining in the Foundations in Faith restricted fund. These surplus funds were applied to last year’s fundraising project. Phase 2 of the Foundations in Faith Classroom Renovation Project was completed this past summer, and thanks to the generosity of all those who gave to these projects in the past two years, our 1st through 5th grade classrooms have been remodeled and updated. We wish to thank all of the school and parish families who participated in the 2014 Jog-a-thon or who gave during our Foundations in Faith Paddle Raise at our CTK “An Evening in Wonderland” 2015 Auction this past year. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students. What is the difference between the three funds supporting CTK? A. Annual Fund: The Annual Fund appeal supports the school’s operational budget. The cost of educating each child exceeds tuition revenue and the parish subsidy. The Annual Fund helps to fill this “gap” and maintain lower annual tuition increases. Endowment for Education Fund: The Endowment for Education Fund provides for the long-term viability of the school. The funds are invested by the Archdiocese to provide a permanent provision of support for Christ the King Catholic School. During the 2014-2015 school year, the Endowment for Education Fund provided $20,000 for tuition assistance to our students. Tuition Assistance (Support-A-Student): Tuition Assistance aids qualifying Catholic families to pay tuition, both annually and in cases of emergency. This year nearly one third of our students received tuition assistance, ranging from 6 to 80% of annual tuition cost. The average award is approximately $1,500. Q. Why does CTK need an Annual Fund Appeal? Tuition and fees only cover 80% of the full cost to educate a child here; in order to keep tuition affordable, our school relies on parish subsidy, parent-led fundraising programs and our development campaigns such as the Annual Fund to broaden our base of support and ensure financial stability. Q. What is the timeline for the campaigns? A. Donations are accepted year round. The Joseph E. Weston Foundation matches up to $12,500 for non-parent Tuition Assistance and up to $15,000 for CEED Endowment Fund. This is a great opportunity to double your gift! The campaign concludes June 30th, 2016. Q. Can a person charge a gift, or have donations automatically deducted from a checking or savings account? A. Yes to both! Donors can charge their Annual Fund gift to their credit card. Gifts can be charged online at the school website (www.ctkweb.org). Donors can request gifts be deducted electronically from a checking or savings account following completion of a VANCO authorization form available from the school Development office by A n n u a l R e p o r t 2 0 1 4 - 2 0 1 5 calling (503) 785-2418 or checking online at www. ctkweb.org under the Support CTK link on the CTK school homepage. Q. Can my gift be matched by my employer and/ or United Way? A. Depending on the donor’s employer, most charitable gifts to an elementary school can be matched. A matching gifts brochure listing participating employers is available from the school, or a donor can contact his/her company’s Human Relations office. United Way contributions also can be directed to Christ the King Catholic School. Q. How do the students and school give back to our parish and local community? A. Last year, CTK middle school students logged in over 5410 service hours and our K-8th grade students collected $2,500 cash, plus over 3,000 lbs. of food and clothing to various service organizations. Within our parish, students supported the Altar Society Holiday Cookie Faire and Madonna House Baby Shower, St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Food Drive, Penny Power Campaign for the Downtown Chapel, plus gave over 300 hours annually in service as altar servers for liturgies. Other worthy organizations that our students donated service hours to were Blanchett House and Camp Exceptional. Our Parish Religious Education Program, which teaches the Catholic faith to over 200 children and adults, uses the school building and equipment weekly and in the summer; the playground serves as a neighborhood recreational area on evenings and weekends to local residents.
