Christ the King - Holy Rosary School
Christ the King THAT HE WOULD REIGN IN OUR HEARTS In 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in his encyclical letter Quas Primas, in response to growing nationalism and secularism around the world. He had the foresight to realize that secularism could soon wage awful wars against the Church. During the early twentieth century, in Mexico, Russia, and in many parts of Europe, atheistic regimes threatened not just the Catholic Church and its faithful but civilization itself. Pope Pius XI’s encyclical gave Catholics hope and—while governments of men around them crumbled— the assurance that Christ the King shall reign forever. Pope Pius XI said that Christ “reign[s] ‘in the hearts of men,’ both by reason of the keenness of his intellect and the extent of his knowledge, and also because he is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind.” While we hope and pray that the dark times of almost a century ago remain in the past, a troubling recent Pew Forum report shows that religious intolerance is on the rise worldwide, including in the United States. Therefore, we must remain vigilant when our first American freedom protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is threatened. Religious liberty gives us the ability not just to worship at Mass but the freedom to feed the hungry, serve the needy, and tend to the sick. During this time when we come together as a nation in thanksgiving for our many Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome— for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us— this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. blessings, let us thank God for the gift of religious CNS Photo/Gregory A. Shemitz liberty and ask that it not be taken for granted. The Lord told David he would be a shepherd to His people. David made an agreement with the elders and was anointed king. Second Reading: Colossians 1: 12 – 20 Paul explains to the Colossians that God has made them fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light and that through the Son we have redemption and forgiveness of sin. He describes Jesus as the image of the invisible God, the head of the church and in Him all things hold together. Gospel: Luke 23: 35 – 43 Jesus is mocked by the crowd as he hung on the cross. Above him was an inscription that read “This is the king of the Jews.” One of the men being crucified with Jesus tells Him to save them and Himself, while the other asks that he be remembered when Jesus is in his kingdom. Jesus said in reply, “Amen I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” ©2000 Bon Venture Services, Inc. We ask that you continue to read good Catholic literature. In the weeks following we will be launching a new web site called FaithfulDisciples.org. Pray for its success. May the Lord who has begun a good work in His Church being it to completion. With the Solemnity of the Christ the King the formal recognition of this time in the Church’s history as the Year of Faith is concluded. It would be an error, however, to say this is an ending for it is the end only of the beginning of the call for renewal by Popes Benedict and Francis. During his short time as our Universal Shepherd the Holy father has called upon each and every believer to examine themselves and discern the ways in which they might be faithful disciples. The process of conversion of which he speaks so often begins with our Baptism and continues throughout our earthly existence. In strengthening our friendship with Jesus the sacraments are seen as true gifts of reformation. The Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance should be celebrated on a regular basis. This meeting with the Lord through His representative and that of the community of the faith looks to appraise in a truthful way the failures of the past as well as the places where growth is possible and indeed demanded. In this spiritual inventory we are advised not only to confess to those times in which our actions were sinful but to remember the lack of action when the virtue of charity was a required response. In his visits to the various religious communities as well as his talks to various laypeople and groups he has stressed that we are our brothers’ keepers. We are to keep the Beatitudes of Christ before us as we encounter the homeless, the starving masses, the persecuted, the undocumented, and especially, our young, born and unborn. Our relationship with Christ cannot be separated from our relationship with those with whom we share the earth no matter where they are from or what vulnerability they have. In our on‐going transformation the Eucharist is central. It is the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. We cannot absent ourselves lightly or fail to invite those whose we know once encountered Christ as Catholic. When Christ died on the Cross it was for all mankind to have the opportunity of salvation. He saw us as a wounded people. We cannot separate ourselves from others thinking that it is an individual experience. When we sin it affects all, when we pray it affects all. When we love it enhances the existence of all. In our Archdiocese there are many opportunities to live out our vocation to pursue holiness. As each parish community embraces the reflection necessary To Make All Things New it is an invitation to become more active in faith sharing by being a lector, an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, a catechist, part of an adult faith formation team and /or the RCIA, a youth leader, or part of a community food pantry. Throughout our ten counties many lay ecclesial groups exist to support the mission of the Church. The Knights of Columbus, the Foccalari, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, Communion and Liberation, Cursillo, Marriage Encounter and so many others share their unique charisms for the benefit for others. As one person once said in the catholic Church we have no volunteers only disciples living out the call to holiness. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, in his desire to build upon the spiritual advances of the Year of Faith Pope Francis has called for an Extraordinary Synod on the Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization. This event calls upon each of to realize the importance of family in the passing on of the faith as well as recognizing that each member’s personal growth throughout life in the faith experience. This papal effort follows upon the sentiments he expressed in the encyclical Lumen Fidei. For all of us this must be a year to see how we collaborate in our homes and in our parishes in this sacred task. THE END OF THE YEAR OF FAITH CARDINAL DOLAN LECTURE Cardinal Dolan will speak about the New Evangelization, th Sunday, November 24 at 4:30 PM at St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie. The reception of Holy Communion is a sign of Unity in Faith, and such unity does not exist between Catholics and those who belong to other Christian groups. That unity is something for which we are to pray. If you would like to explore becoming a Catholic, please speak to one of the Priests. You may find the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF COMMUNION helpful. The role of a “godparent” is to be an “other parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why sponsors must be practicing Catholics, 16 yrs of age or older, having received Confirmation and currently living a good Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that person must be in a valid Church marriage. One sponsor is required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two for Baptism, in which case one must be male and the other female. A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification from his/her current parish. This is a declaration by a priest/deacon that the individual is qualified to be a sponsor according to Church Law. To be so certified, the individual must be a current parishioner of the particular parish where the certification is being sought, and be known to the priest/deacon as being a faithful practicing Catholic, attending Mass there regularly. Unfortunately, at times, family members or friends are chosen to be sponsors with good intentions, but are found to be ineligible according to Church Law. Also, more and more, people seem to think that they are still “parishioners” of their childhood parish, where they attended school or received sacraments years ago, while no longer living in the area or attending Mass there regularly. It is important for individuals to be active members of their local Catholic faith communities. The unfortunate fact is that some are neither practicing Catholics nor faithful members of a parish family and are thereby ineligible to become sponsors. Like all other things in life, individual choices bring consequences. + PRAY THE ROSARY EVERY DAY +
