If your dog doesn’t love you for getting this book, then he’s a cat.” Bradley Trevor Grieve, International bestselling author of Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats Great Sydney Dog Walks What do you do when you’re trying to find great walking spots and picturesque destinations to go to with your dog and can’t find them? You do your research and write and publish your own book. That’s what frustrated Sydney dog owner Katie Whiffen did. R ocky the Vizsla and Stella the German Shorthaired Pointer and the need for the great outdoors was Katie’s inspiration to track down the best dog friendly walks in Sydney. As Katie says, “I knew how to find off-leash areas, but I was much more interested in finding walks that I could do with the dogs as Stella isn’t that relaxed in an off-leash environment. While I knew that you couldn’t take dogs in National Parks, I was getting very tired of going to places that I thought allowed dogs, and then seeing the dreaded “NO DOGS” sign one or two kilometres along a trail”. The final straw came when Whiffen had some international visitors staying with her and she thought that taking them with her dogs to do the Manly to Spit walk would be a great outing. She believed there was a dog friendly version of the walk. But when she checked a review of this online, the writer stated, “Yes, there is a dog-friendly path but as you miss the best part of the trail, it would be Bowhouse is Bowhouse is proud to announce plans for 2009’s Dogumentary exhibition of works of art and photography dedicated to the subject of dogs. proud to announce plans Theme: “Dogs Day Out” for Healthy and Natural Pet Nutrition BONDI BEACH for 2009’s Dogumentary Dates: Tuesday 14th to Sunday 26th July 2009 We believe in giving your pet the very best in exhibition of Venue: The Gallery, Bondi Pavilion, BONDI BEACH, NSW 2026 nutrition for a long happy and healthy life. Maybe I hadn’t had enough sleep the night before, who knows, but this utterly infuriated me. How hard could it be to find fantastic, dog-friendly and scenic walks throughout Sydney where I could be proud to show a visitor what a great city we had? Whiffen poured through various out-of-date guides and then set about searching council sites and bushwalking clubs for ideas. She figured out as much of the legislation on dog access as the average layperson could. During the process Whiffen was keen to ensure that the book could cover the greater Sydney area and make it as relevant to Coogee, Collaroy and Newtown as she could to Blacktown and Fairfield—all areas that have large dog populations and few offleash parks. “Aside from the 40 walks mentioned in the book, I’ve also included all the council off-leash areas and the most desired thing for any dog-owner in Sydney—the chapter on off-leash beaches which is sadly very short”. Whiffen’s tips on what are the best walks and trails to be found in our great city: Dover Heights to Lighthouse Reserve that include off-leash parks over the cliffs of Sydney– she believes is spectacular!; Swim Towels Foldable Bowls Tidy Bags Enjoy your walk Berry Island Figure of Eight (Wollstonecraft) which is a lovely harbour-front off-leash reserve plus the walk takes you passed Aboriginal rock carvings; and Tahmoor Canyon, which she describes as just a great adventure. She also found some surprising walks but we won’t mention them here—you’ll have to get the book to discover her great finds and insights. “The best thing in doing these walks – aside from helping to contribute to a positive pet culture in Sydney, is that I have rediscovered this city. I’m sure my parents dragged me to these places when I was young, but walking the dog always makes you look like a local, and is the perfect excuse to mosey around different parts of Sydney. I can’t believe I haven’t made the most of these places before”.
