BAPTISM CLASS FOR NEW PARENTS
The required Baptism class for new parents is held the second
Sunday of each month beginning with the 12:00 Mass parents are
asked to gather at St. Joseph’s statue to the right of the main altar.
Penance/Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated every Saturday from
12:30-1:30 PM and 4:00-5:00 PM in our church or by
appointment.
Marriage
Arrangements are to be made at the Rectory office at least 9
months in advance. Pre-Cana and FOCCUS registrations must be
arranged through the parish.
Anointing of the Sick & Communion of the Sick
The anointing of the sick takes place after the 12:00 PM Mass on
the 4th Sunday of each month. Anyone who is homebound may
receive Holy Communion at home on a regular basis. Eucharistic
ministers assist the priests in this ministry. Please call the rectory ext. 9101.
Adoration
First and third Fridays of the month 12:45-3:00 PM in the Church.
12:30-1:30 PM on Saturdays in the church.

ARE YOU AS SMART AS A SEVENTH GRADER?
I was really surprised and even shocked the other day when I went into my
upstairs office. There are many books there and I just happened to spot my seventh grade religion book. It wasn’t actually my personal book, but it was the exact
textbook that was used all over the Diocese of Brooklyn in the ‘50s. Like every
other kid in Brooklyn and Long Island who went to Catholic School at that time, I
mastered that little green book. And there really were no options. There was a diocesan religion curriculum and in June exams came from the Diocese of Brooklyn.
They were standardized and there were no deviations. The teacher had to teach
from the book and the kids had to know it cold.
You will find it hard to believe all that had to be learned by twelve year old
seventh graders. Let me give you a few sample questions:
With what does St. Peter compare the devil?
Does venial sin destroy the life of grace in the soul?
Which prophet foretold the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass?
How does actual sin differ from original sin?
How did Jesus institute the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist?
Define Doctor of the Church. Name four Greek and four Latin Doctors.
The book is extraordinarily well organized and is very scripturally based. Father
Damian commented on how well written it is. Even if a the seventh grader learned
only 50%, he would know a lot. Surprisingly enough, the book is comparatively
brief—only 240 pages—but it is jam packed with content. It is, of course, a
product of its times and there are no color pictures. I guarantee that most adults
in this parish or any parish in the Diocese would learn a great deal from reading this volume. And their knowledge of Sacred Scripture would be immeasurably
increased. The book could be updated, but only in small ways since it pretty much
sticks to the basics of the faith and the theme is the Apostles’ Creed.
I mention all this because I think there is a definite crisis in the Catholic
Church in terms of the religious knowledge of the faithful. For the last few
decades, the Bishops of the United States have been very concerned with catechetics and making sure that religion texts in Catholic schools and religious education
programs are in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church. They understand that our children need to have adequate religious knowledge. If there is
not a firm foundation in faith, that faith can easily crumble when it is criticized and
persecuted in college and later life. The fact is there is a continuous warfare on the
Catholic religion and our faith is continually questioned and actually persecuted by
the media.
We all need to grow in our faith and the knowledge of our faith. Furthermore, we have
the genuine responsibility of handing on the whole of the Catholic faith to future generations. It will not be enough if they do not have a basic understanding of the Catholic
faith, its history, and the reasons we have for believing what we do. Parenthetically, I
often notice high school students with enormous text books in English, math and science—but the religion texts are very much thinner and appear to have less content. I
have often wondered why that is so. As far as I am concerned, in every Catholic institution
of learning, religion is and must always be the most important subject.
Father William Cavanaugh and Sisters of St. Joseph were the authors of this fantastic text for the seventh grade. Those who studied religion in the schools of the Diocese of
Brooklyn owe a great debt of gratitude to them. They did a monumental job in effectively
and thoroughly communicating the faith to countless thousands of young people. We could
learn a lot from Father Cavanaugh and the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Since 1993, the President proclaims January 16th as Religious Freedom Day. This day reminds us of our freedom of religious expression in our schools, homes and places of worship.
Every public school classroom should be a safe place for students to express their faith. As Catholics and
Americans, let us make sure our children experience that. Almost 20 years ago, the U.S. Department of
Education directed the public schools to tell students what their religious freedoms are. Gateways to Better
Education published the pamphlet, “Free to Speak”, to help students and teachers know their civil liberties.
Director Eric Buehrer said, “We want our young people to be bold in their faith. We have to let them know
they can be. That it’s perfectly legal for them to be bold.”
“Free to Speak” guidelines from U.S. Dept. of Education:
1. You can pray, read your Bible or other religious material, and talk about your faith at school.
2. You can organize prayer groups and religious clubs, and announce your meetings.
3. You can express your faith in your classwork and homework.
4. Your teachers can organize prayer groups with other teachers.

The Mineola PAL will have its football registration for the Fall 2015 Season at
the Mineola PAL Field House located on 2nd Street and Willis Avenue on Saturday, January 31st from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The sign up is for flag (5 and 6
year olds) and for tackle (7’s, 8’s, 9’s, 10’s and 11’s). The registration form can

“WASH-UP KITS” SERVICE PROJECT
WEEKEND OF JANUARY 17TH AND 18TH
Our troop is partnering with local soup kitchens to provide the “guests” who use these facilities with hygiene kits. The ability to be able to” wash up” before eating a meal can enhance
the person’s dignity. This is our goal. To make the kits we need old clean towels, Ivory soap

We will also gratefully accept monetary contributions in any amount to purchase these supplies. Our troop will be at all the Masses on the weekend of January 17th and 18th.

Telecare Telethon Time!
The Telecare Telethon is the weekend of
Saturday, January 17th from 2:00 PM -10:00 PM and
18th from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Please tune in on Cablevision channel 29/137 or Verizon FiOS channel 296 to
support our Diocesan television station. It will be 18 hours
filled with many guest “stars” including many of the
clergy, religious and dedicated lay people of our Diocese.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA
Welcome back to “Ordinary Time!” It is a new opportunity to work at deepening our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Nothing could be more important than to answer His call, to receive the love which gives meaning to our life.
This past week a priest told us that since the Christmas lights are being taking down,
now WE need to be the light that shines with the joy of our Faith inviting to everyone
to meet and know our God!
As I was fixing the CDs in the kiosk, a gentleman approach me asking for a particular
CD which I didn’t have, and then he tells me that this particular CD changed the life of
his daughter; by then I was very interested to hear the rest and it was a sad one. His
daughter is in college and she came home to ask for a sum of money without telling
why she needs it, but promising she would return it, the father tells me what a good
person she is, so he does not have any fear about her need but still he wants to know
why she needs it. Since it was getting late for him to keep a business appointment, he
asked his daughter to ride in the car with him and then they would pass by the bank.
As she was waiting in the car for her father, she finds a few CDs and one caught her attention. She started listening to it and crying until her father returned and she tells him
she will not need the money now, but she would need his help. She tells him she is
pregnant and was going to get an abortion, but now she was not after she heard what
Msgr. Fulton Sheen said in that CD (the CD was “There is life in the womb”). The father, of course, is very concerned, but without any doubt will help his daughter.
I give many thanks to that man for sharing his story in confidence and at the same time
I thank the Lord for allowing St. Aidan Parish to have this ministry which is helping in
such a powerful way to save souls.
I encourage everyone to look at all the CDs we have on the kiosks and see which one
can be of help to people you know that do not have access to this kind of inspiring
teachings and guidance’s. Help souls to grow in holiness amidst life’s most difficult
moments.

PEANUT BUTTER GANG
Thank you everyone who volunteered to make peanut butter sandwiches at our
last session. We made about 1,120 sandwiches and 66 wash-up kits. The Gang
meets on the second Saturday of every month. Join us if you can.

concerns of parents today. According to the National Center for
Missing and Exploited Children
(NCMEC), as many as one million
children are reported missing
every year. Hosting a childidentification event is a natural fit
for New York Life because protecting families is at the heart of what
we do.
Open to all players and siblings and the
service is free.
Take home ID cards with you right away.
No information about the child is retained
by New York Life.
The Identification cards contain the child’s name, photo and biographical information including date of birth, gender,
height, weight, hair color, etc. as well as a fingerprint image.
This information is critical to expediting the return of a lost or missing child. The card can immediately be presented to law enforcement officials and eliminate the wasted minutes often used to
gather information rather than searching for the missing child.

ATTENTION VETERANS: MANGANO ANNOUNCES FREE VETERAN WORKSHOP
Mineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today that the Nassau County Veterans
Service Agency along with the Vietnam War Veterans Association Inc., Suffolk Independent Living Organization,
Green Homes Long Island and Chase Bank will be hosting a Free Veteran Workshop on Wednesday, February 11 th
at 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Freeport Recreation Center, Room 102, 130 E. Merrick Road in Freeport.
The workshop is open to all veterans and will provide a great opportunity for veterans to meet with certified benefits
counselors from the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency and several other organizations that are looking to
help our heroes.

COMPANION/HOME HEALTH AIDES: If you are looking for work, please contact the parish social ministry

with our office and we will contact you when the need arises.
MINISTRY OF CONSOLATION – We are in need of volunteers who are able to do wake visits on Fridays (not
every week) at the local funeral homes in our area. As a representative of St. Aidan’s Church your role would be to
offer prayers and condolences on behalf of the parish. If this is something that you think you can assist us with,

FOOD PANTRY - If you missed our monthly food drive, you can still donate. You can donate non-perishable
food and personal hygiene items by bringing them to back of Church or across the street to the Parish
Social Ministry Office. We also have a refrigerator for eggs, dairy products, sliced bread and a freezer
for ground beef, chicken cutlets and frozen pizzas. ITEM FOR THE WEEK: TISSUES
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY – Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the second and fourth Monday of
each month at 9:45 am in the Peter and Paul Room of the Finamore Center to knit or crochet prayer
shawls or lap blankets for our sick and homebound parishioners. New members are always welcome.
You need not know how to knit or crochet. We have talented parishioners who can teach you. The next
meeting will take place on Monday, January 26th . If you have some wool to donate to this ministry,

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
ATTENTION ALL VOLUNTEERS: Are you aware that the Diocese of Rockville Centre requires ANYONE IN
ANY MINISTRY TO BE VIRTUS TRAINED AND HAVE A BACKGROUND CHECK? A ministry includes
Catechists, CYO Coaches, Ushers, Liturgical Ministers, and all parish organization members. Check the Virus

OFFICE CLOSED – The Religious Education Office will be CLOSED on Monday, Jan. 19th in observance of the
Martin Luther King Holiday.
TEACHER MEETINGS - The mid-year Religious Education Teacher meetings for those who teach on Mondays,
Tuesdays and Wednesdays will take place on January 20th & 21st. There will be NO CLASSES on those
dates. Regular classes WILL BE HELD on Thursday. January 22nd.
1st COMMUNION PARENTS MEETING - There will be two meetings conducted for parents of children scheduled to receive 1st Communion this spring. The meetings will be held at 7:30 PM in Msgr. Kirwin Hall on
Monday, January 26th and Tuesday, February 3rd. Each meeting covers the same material; parents are asked
to make every effort to attend one of the meetings. Please plan to attend whichever meeting is convenient for
you.

through a $ 900,000 fund for the Archdiocese for Military Services.
- Donated to the $ 1 million Knights of Columbus Heroes Fund to provide financial aid to the families of the
emergency personnel killed or disabled during the 9/11 attacks.
- Funded our Order’s donation of 8,000 wheelchairs to handicapped individuals throughout the world including 2,000 to U.S. Military Veterans.
WOMEN’S GROUP FORMING – The Columbiettes, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, is forming a local chapter at Corpus Christi Council. DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE, Vocations Office-Third Fridays-Adoration &
Dodgeball February 20th, March 20th, April 17th and May 15th. Each month, young people (13+) throughout the diocese will gather at St. Ignatius in Hicksville for prayer and fellowship. Following a period of Eucharistic adoration, there is a youth social with free food, sports
and entertainment. May 15th will be at a location to be announced at a later date. PRO Retreat

DIVORCED & BEYOND SUPPORT GROUP-Beginning January 30th, an eight week session of support group sessions will be offered for those individuals experiencing the pain of
separation or divorce. The program is designed to help men and women find encouragement as
they explore the emotions and experiences often associated with separation and divorce. The
group meets on Fridays beginning January 30th at 7:30 PM at St. William the Abbot Church,

Confession and Lunch. Fathers Sean and David grew up in Ireland. They have very recently
come from the Missionaries residence in France to live at the Seminary where they will be offering private and preached Eucharistic Retreats. They have traveled worldwide drawing people to
