BAPTISM CLASS FOR NEW PARENTS
The required Baptism class for new parents is held the second
Sunday of each month beginning with the 12:00 Mass parents are
asked to gather at St. Joseph’s statue to the right of the main altar.
Penance/Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated every Saturday from
12:30-1:30 PM and 4:00-5:00 PM in our church or by
appointment.
Marriage
Arrangements are to be made at the Rectory office at least 9
months in advance. Pre-Cana and FOCCUS registrations must be
arranged through the parish.
Anointing of the Sick & Communion of the Sick
The anointing of the sick takes place after the 12:00 PM Mass on
the 4th Sunday of each month. Anyone who is homebound may
receive Holy Communion at home on a regular basis. Eucharistic
ministers assist the priests in this ministry. Please call the rectory ext. 9101.
Adoration
First and third Fridays of the month 12:45-3:00 PM in the Church.
12:30-1:30 PM on Saturdays in the church.

The opportunity to be anointed with the Oil
of the Sick will take place on Sunday, January 25th after the 12:00 noon Mass. All who
wish to be anointed should gather in Mary’s
transept immediately after the Mass. If you
are facing surgery, suffering from increased
physical, mental, emotional illness or suffering from chronic pain, you should consider
being anointed.

THE PLUS
The other day I was leaving a wake and a woman stopped me to comment on my
handwriting in the memorial book. I thought and said: “That is due to the
School Sisters of Notre Dame.” Those of you who attended Catholic school
know exactly what I mean. A tremendous emphasis was placed on penmanship—it
seemed second only to religion. But there were a lot of other emphases. Paramount of course, was Jesus Christ and the salvation of your soul. Underlying
everything was the dignity of the human person---that each one of us was
made in the image and likeness of God. We were taught the demands of practical charity and the importance of personal sacrifice. This was exemplified in
the life of the nuns. They spent the school year teaching us with extraordinary devotion and then in the summer went to the South to teach religion to poor children.
Their lives were consumed for Jesus and the spread of the Gospel.
This week the Catholic Church in the United States is joyfully celebrating our
wonderful Catholic schools. In almost every parish with a school there will be all
sorts of special activities designed to showcase Catholic schools and their students.
For example, here at St. Aidan we will have a Catholic school Mass followed by
an open house in both the Lower and Upper Schools. We cordially invite all to
visit our school and learn about its programs and the achievements of our students.
St. Aidan is a parish where the people are particularly proud of the school. You enthusiastically support the school and so many of you tell me how proud you are to
be graduates. And every time I speak about how many in the congregation have or
are going to a Catholic school about two thirds of the congregation stand. That is a
pretty impressive number.
The plus in Catholic education is that the Catholic school is a privileged place
for the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Here we can freely and joyfully teach the Holy Scripture and the teachings of the Catholic Church. We can
explain to our young people the demands of the moral law. In the midst of a society that actively promotes the culture of death, the Catholic school announces the
Gospel of Life. We can promote the social teaching of the Church in all its fullness. We do not need to be hesitant or tentative or politically correct. We can
preach the Gospel without restriction. We can pray and there is nothing to prohibit the open and joyful expression of religion. Our schools are filled with crucifixes, statues of our Blessed Lady and the saints. The identity of our schools is
clearly Catholic. Our children are taken to church for Mass and receive Holy
Communion and they sing praise to God in our choirs.
Last weekend several of our students spoke at the conclusion of the Mass. They
were superb and the people responded with applause. This weekend I want to
thank our principal, Miss Oliver, our assistant principal, Mrs. Rowan, and the faculty and
staff of St. Aidan School. They are doing so much for our children and the Catholic
Church. Every one of our eighth graders who wanted to go to a Catholic High School
was accepted into at least one of his or her choices. Many were accepted into all and
some won scholarships.
I deeply appreciate all that PACE does to support the school and the outstanding
generosity of you, our parishioners, in making Catholic education available to so
many. For decade after decade you have made St. Aidan the great school it is.

World Day for Consecrated Life
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Pope Francis has declared 2015 as the Year of Consecrated Life in the Universal Church. We
give thanks and honor the women and men in consecrated life who have served and are serving
here in our great Diocese of Rockville Centre.
The life of this local Church has been blessed through the mission and ministry of these dedicated women and men who are responding to God’s call to each of them to follow Jesus as vowed
religious. As religious, their commitment to a life of prayer, lived in community and expressed
through their ministry in the Church, witnesses to their response to God’s love for them. Their
vowed commitment to God and service to the Church is a gift for all of us.
As we move through this Year of Consecrated Life I invite each of you to take whatever opportunities are presented to say “thanks” to the religious who are here in our Diocese, to remember
them in your prayers and to pray that other generous young people respond to God’s call to join
them as religious sisters, brothers and priests.
I join my prayers with yours in thanksgiving for their lives of prayer and service and in petition that God will bless each of the religious who are part of our Diocese with gifts of grace, hope
and peace as they witness to God’s great love. I ask Mary, Mother of the Church, to continue to inspire each of them as they live a life of “Yes” to God’s call.

A Study Program for
Lent 2015
On February 19, 2015 we will
start a Bible study course for
adults and mature teen faith formation, presented in six sessions. This new program will
answer the questions, “What is
the New Evangelization?”,
“Why is it worthwhile?” and
“How does one do it?”
Today, we need a new passion for the mission of offering
friendship with Jesus Christ to others. We need new expressions and methods to reach out to an increasingly secular culture, especially in the West. Secularism tries to push
God out of the public square and deny his existence. We
are called to spread Christ’s love universally.
The New Evangelization Formation Program is a wonderful way of learning to do “little things with great
love” and to give testimony to Christ by our everyday
lives.

Religious Freedom in the News:
Orange County, FL Public Schools have banned passive Bible distribution (placing Bibles on a common
area table for HS students to pick up if they choose) on January 16 - National Freedom of Religion Day after satanists and atheist groups sued to pass out their own literature containing graphic and obscene pictures. In response, the school board will not allow any materials to be available.
“This is precisely what the Freedom From Religion people want,” said FL Family Policy Council. “They
want to get rid of religion and that’s their strategy… Irrespective of whether someone’s a Christian or not,
the Bible is one of the key documents that gives us Western civilization and is one of the greatest pieces of
literature of all time. So the fact that children are not being exposed to that in public school is an unfortunate thing.” (www.cnsnews.com; 1/6/15)

and talk about your faith at school.” “As Catholic Bishops and American citizens, we address an urgent

2015 SPRING TRACK REGISTRATION
OPEN TO ALL
SPRING TRACK PROGRAM FOR GIRLS AND BOYS GRADES K – 8
Registration fee: $50 for 1 child; $75 for 2 children; $90 for 3 or more children in same family.
Note: all children must be registered at the same time to receive the discount .
Team uniform: $30.00 per registrant (you keep the uniform).

The St. Aidan Spring Track Program starts its nineteenth season this year. The program is open to boys and girls in
grades K – 8 who live in the St. Aidan parish or live in adjoining parishes that do not have their own track program,
including residents of Albertson, East Williston, Mineola, Roslyn, Williston Park and parts of New Hyde Park.
Track team members will participate in approximately 7 to 10 meets, which are held at various locations throughout Nassau County. Practices are typically twice per week. There are both boys and girls teams for each grade. We
want the children who participate to enjoy the program, and emphasize team over individual accomplishments,
with the majority of races being relays.
It is also our endeavor to train members of the team so that they develop speed, strength, and endurance. The children who regularly attend practices and meets will all improve their fitness levels and times significantly over the
course of the season. For children who play other sports, participation in the Spring Track program will provide a
tremendous boost to their speed, endurance, and fitness levels.
Meet Schedule*
Track meets are held on Saturday or Sunday most weeks from late April through mid-June, with two CYO Championship meets held on weeknights*. We also sponsor our own meet in early June.
Program
The track program is divided into boys and girls divisions, and split by grades: K – 3rd, and 4th – 8th. WE NEED
COACHES AND ASSISTANTS AT ALL LEVELS. Parents are also needed to assist at track meets or with administrative support.
Practices*
Practices are usually held two times per week in the late afternoon or early evening and last about one hour*. Children have very hectic schedules these days, and we know this, but we ask that every effort be made to have your
children regularly attend practice. Improvement and success will only come with dedication and training. Once the
rosters are set up you will be notified of the time and location of your child’s practices. Practices are expected to
begin in late March, and are typically held at Wheatley High School, Mineola High School, or Tully Field tracks.*

MINEOLA PAL FOOTBALL REGISTRATION
The Mineola PAL will have its football registration for the Fall 2015 Season at
the Mineola PAL Field House located on 2nd Street and Willis Avenue on Saturday, January 31st from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The sign up is for flag (5
and 6 year olds) and for tackle (7’s, 8’s, 9’s, 10’s and 11’s). The registration

Last week Pope Francis visited the Philippines and deviating from his heavy schedule he decided to
visit with Manila’s street kids. More than 14000 children are homeless, neglected by their own parents, themselves very poor. It was a simple but very intense encounter. A 12 year old little girl embraced the Pope and burst into tears asking him why God allows children to suffer, to become victims, when
it is not their fault? And why are there only very few people helping us? The Pope was particularly moved,
his eyes getting cloudy, filling with tears, showing his affection. Pope Francis tried to answer her question,
saying “this little girl has asked a question to which there is no answer, and she wasn’t able to express it in
words, only in tears. Jesus did not meet people’s needs with worldly compassion, handing out money or material things, but took the time to listen. Jesus, in the Gospel, cried. He cried for his dead friend, He cried for
the family that lost its child, He cried when he saw the poor widow burying her son, He was moved to tears,
to compassion, when He saw the crowds without a shepherd. It is only when we learn to cry with those who

The Pope and his encounter with the marginalized, with the poorest of the poor, was a real one, and a teaching moment because even if we don’t see these sufferings here we still can find people around us that suffer,
that are alone, that weep as the young girl. Let’s shake off our indifference and find in us the way to help our
neighbor with our love, imitating Christ, being a witness of His love.
This week we have in the kiosks CDs that will expand our ideas upon the teachings of the Catholic Church
surrounding social justice in light of sacred scripture. Discover how social justice, in regard to the poor, is
not a small piece in the puzzle but instead really frames the entire mosaic of Scripture, “Encountering the
Poor: Biblical Roots for Catholic Social Teachings” by Dr. Tim Gray. “Faith at Work and the Holy
Moment” by Matthew Kelly, Do you struggle with living your faith at work? Is holiness possible? Does
being ethical help or hurt in your business? These are just some of the questions Mathew Kelly answers in
this presentation.
These and other CDs provide main ideas how to be a witness of our Faith. Again, I ask you to listen to them
and pass them to others who can listen to them. The Lord will bless you; you are helping Him to embrace
souls away from the Church.

ST. AIDAN ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY
St. Aidan Rosary Altar Society asks all members to attend the Corporate Mass on February 1st at 9:00
AM. The Mass will remember deceased Rosarians Doris Gaisser and Patricia Starr. Please assemble in
the rear of the church before mass (8:45 AM). We will say a decade of the Rosary to honor the Blessed
Mother. We’re back –our February meeting will be on Monday, February 2nd. The doors will open at 7:30
PM. Dr. Anthony Belo, who specializes in Physical Therapy, will be speaking about Balance Training. All
are welcome.

St. Aidan Rosary Altar Society will be hosting a Day of Recollection on Thursday, February 19, 2015 between 9:00 AM—2:00 PM, in St.Aidan’s Convent. The cost of $15 will include coffee, tea and lunch. The
Jesuit Collaborative (Father Damian Halligan and Pat McDonough) will help us begin our Lenten journey. Seating is limited so hold your place and sign up at the February 2nd meeting.

ATTENTION VETERANS: MANGANO ANNOUNCES FREE VETERAN WORKSHOP
Mineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today that the Nassau County Veterans
Service Agency along with the Vietnam War Veterans Association Inc., Suffolk Independent Living Organization,
Green Homes Long Island and Chase Bank will be hosting a Free Veteran Workshop on Wednesday, February 11th
at 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Freeport Recreation Center, Room 102, 130 E. Merrick Road in Freeport.
The workshop is open to all veterans and will provide a great opportunity for veterans to meet with certified benefits
counselors from the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency and several other organizations that are looking to
help our heroes.

FOOD PANTRY - Our next monthly food drive will take place during the weekend of February
7th /8th .

for eggs, dairy products, sliced bread and a freezer for ground beef, chicken cutlets and frozen pizzas.
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY – Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the second and fourth Monday
of each month at 9:45 AM in the Peter and Paul Room of the Finamore Center to knit or crochet prayer
shawls or lap blankets for our sick and homebound parishioners. New members are always welcome.
You need not know how to knit or crochet. We have talented parishioners who can teach you. The next
meeting will take place on Monday, January 26th . If you have some wool to donate to this ministry,

1st COMMUNION PARENTS MEETING - There will be two meetings conducted for parents of children scheduled to receive 1st Communion this spring. The meetings will be held at 7:30 PM in Msgr.
Kirwin Hall on Monday, January 26th and Tuesday, February 3rd. Each meeting covers the same material; parents are asked to make every effort to attend one of the meetings. Please plan to attend
whichever meeting is convenient for you.
CLASSES RESUME – Religious Education Classes scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays
will resume at their normal times beginning, Monday, January 26th.
THURSDAY TEACHER MEETING - The mid-year Religious Education Teacher meeting for those
who teach on Thursdays will take place on January 29th; there will be NO CLASSES conducted on
that day. Thursday Classes will resume at their normal times on Thursday. February 5th.

DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE, Vocations Office-Third Fridays-Adoration & Dodgeball February 20th, March 20th, April 17th and May 15th. Each month, young people (13+) throughout the diocese will gather at St. Ignatius in Hicksville for prayer and fellowship. Following a period of Eucharistic
adoration, there is a youth social with free food, sports and entertainment. May 15th will be at a location to
