Indonesia EMERGING TRENDS 2.1 TREND: Telenovelas continue to dominate The telenovela format, so popular in Central and South America, is arguably now the most popular scripted format in the world. In the US, ten years ago there were 14 Hispanic TV stations. Today, over 100 are on air or preparing for launch. Hispanic audiences are highly sought after. For obvious reasons, much attention is paid when The CW remakes Juana la Virgen as Jane the Virgin, Lifetime picks up Devious Maids, based on Ellas Son...la Alegría del Hogar, or ABC Family turns Terminales into Chasing Life. Yet the sea change is happening at a much wider level. As US network drama becomes increasingly based around short run, high concept stories, the long, complex storylines of telenovelas are becoming more popular around the world. Hit titles are not being sold to the US networks or other Spanish-language markets, but also emerging drama markets such as Africa and the Middle East. This is a format that travels very easily, and has almost unprecedented cross-cultural appeal. 17. Mexico Does the secret lie in the nature of the traditional Hispanic audience? Statistically speaking, Hispanic households are both younger and larger than non-Hispanic households. More than 90% of Hispanic viewing is live, and families not only tend to watch communally as a family but also are more accepting of different genre content. It seems highly likely that in adapting to serve this specific audience, telenovela producers have struck on a mix that is 18. South Africa naturally universal and lends itself well to addictive daily stripped viewing. 14. Japan 15. Korea 16. Philippines 19. Spain 20. Turkey 21. UK 22. United Arab Emirates 23. USA 24. Venezuela 1. K7 Scriptlist - July 2014 Line-up 2. Emerging Trends 3. Australia 4. Canada 5. Chile 6. China 7. Colombia 8. France 9. Germany 10. Hong Kong 11. India 12. Italy 13. Indonesia 14. Japan 2.2 TREND: The slow death of traditional ratings FX has become the first major US channel to break away from the traditional ratings model in a market increasingly skewed by catch-up viewing, either by DVR or VOD. On July 18 2014 FX announced in a press release that the network “will no longer issue releases, analysis or comments related to ratings on a Live+Same Day basis”. In other words, those venerable old overnight figures are now obscuring the true picture of a show’s popularity. FX believes that the traditional ratings metric misrepresents the actual audience by not taking into account the multiple data streams and platforms upon which entertainment content is consumed. The current best alternative, Live+3, measures viewing for three days after broadcast, a method which still does not measure the total audience, but is a significantly more accurate metric. The first FX show to benefit from this new approach was horror thriller, The Strain. Judged by traditional Live + Same Day ratings, the premiere episode attracted 2.99m viewers. Gauged via Live+3, that total jumps to 4.73m, of which 2.43m were in the coveted 18-49 demographic. Now that FX has stood its ground, and with the likes of Netflix not even offering viewing figures, it’s only a matter of time before other networks follow suit and the system is forced to evolve to suit the current market. 15. Korea 2.3 TREND: Binge watchers are driving innovation 16. Philippines There is a daily battle between traditional content companies, distributors and now technology companies for control of the viewing experience and that is driving innovation in business models. Netflix’s well-publicised experiments, such as House of Cards and Arrested Development are an early foray into a different kind of relationship that talent is enjoying with distribution partners. 17. Mexico 18. South Africa 19. Spain 20. Turkey 21. UK 22. United Arab Emirates 23. USA 24. Venezuela Amazon’s recent posting of pilots is driving innovation by shifting control of what gets greenlighted from programming executives to audiences. Inviting users to vote brings the audience from the living room into the content providers’ operation. In the future, expect that consumers will get even more involved on many platforms - tomorrow’s shows will push social interaction much further than anything we’re experiencing today. 1.
