The film has gone on to gross $365 million at the worldwide box office through August 1. Time Warner Reports second-Quarter 2010 Results O n August 4, 2010, Time Warner Inc. reported financial results for its second quarter ended June 30, 2010. Commenting on the results, Jeff bewkes, CHAIRMAN Time Warner’s Chairman and and CEO, Chief Executive Officer Jeff Time Warner Inc. Bewkes said: “Time Warner delivered another quarter of strong financial and operating performance. Our revenue increased at its highest rate in two years, driving 15% growth in Adjusted Operating Income. Our investments in high-quality content across the company continue to pay off. Turner’s original programming strategy contributed to the quarter’s strong advertising growth and helped to generate pricing gains at the high end of the recent 2010-2011 upfront. HBO achieved impressive audience growth for its returning shows, and it has more original series in development than at any time in its history. Last week, Warner Bros. became the only studio in history whose films surpassed $1 billion at the domestic box office for ten straight years, while its TV production business extended its streak as the #1 provider of broadcast network programming. In addition, Time Inc. widened its lead in overall domestic print advertising share through the first six months of 2010. Summer 2010 t i m e wa r n e r tURNER B ROADCAS T ING Sports Illustrated and Turner Sports Form New Digital Partnership TNT Kicks Off “100 Days of Drama” H ighlighting TNT’s “100 Days of Drama” campaign, which marks the launch of the network’s summer season of original drama series, were the June 22 premiere of its new series Memphis Beat and the second-season premiere of HawthorRNe. The debut of Memphis Beat, which stars Jason Lee as a quirky Memphis police detective and Alfre Woodard as his demanding boss, drew a strong 4.3 million viewers and built on the lead-in provided by HawthoRNe, which outperformed its first-season T ime Inc. and Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. announced in July the formation of a strategic digital partnership between Turner Sports and Sports Illustrated to create one of the world’s most exciting sports destinations on the Web. The agreement aligns two of Time Warner’s primary sports assets, capitalizing on each company’s core strengths to create an online sports powerhouse with new revenue and marketing opportunities. The combination marries the wealth of stories, perspectives and photos from Sports Illustrated with Turner’s digital media and sales expertise, resources, video sports rights and video production. Sports Illustrated will create all editorial content across each of its platforms: the flagship magazine, its websites, paid mobile products and the recently launched tablet version of the magazine. Under the new agreement, Turner Sports will be responsible for business and technical operations, ad sales, product management and marketing for SI.com and Golf.com, which will be added to Turner’s portfolio of 19 digital sports and entertainment sites. The two organizations will collaborate on multiplatform sales across their collective properties. Additionally, Turner and Sports Illustrated will collaborate on the production of new mobile products and applications. Time Warner Receives 137 Emmy Nominations O n July 8, Time Warner companies received 137 nominations for the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, to be announced August 29. HBO received 101 nominations, the most of any network for the 10th consecutive year, led by 24 nominations for The Pacific (below) and 15 nominations each for Temple Grandin and You Don’t Know Jack. Warner Bros. garnered 24 nominations, including six for Two and a Half Men and five for The Big Bang Theory. Turner Broadcasting received 12 nominations, including six at Cartoon Network, two for The Closer on TNT and two for Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken. average with 3.4 million viewers. TNT’s summer season includes its other returning hits Leverage, Dark Blue and The Closer, which is ad-supported cable’s #1 series of all time. They were joined on July 12 by the premiere of Rizzoli & Isles, a new crime drama starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander, which became the highest-rated launch ever for an advertisingsupported cable show, with 7.6 million viewers. Rizzoli & Isles’ debut followed an equally strong performance for the sixth-season premiere of The Closer, which delivered 7.7 million viewers, up 7% over its fifth-season premiere. The premieres of The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles also rank as ad-supported cable’s top scripted series telecasts for the year through July 18th, 2010 among viewers and households. Source: All ratings data from Nielsen Media Research 2 Summer 2010 tURNER B ROADCAS T ING Turner Classic Movies Stages First TCM Classic Film Festival I n April, Turner Classic Movies successfully staged its first TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood, a celebration of film and TCM’s industry and audience profile as the premier classic movie network. The first TCM Classic Film Festival was a destination event, with attendees traveling from 45 states and 10 countries and territories, including Argentina, Italy, Romania and Guam. Parker, an iconoclastic conservative commentator, will host a dynamic exchange of opinions and analyses – their own and those of their guests and regular contributors – on the most important, compelling and amusing stories of the day. New Series Boost Cartoon Network’s Ratings N ew Friday night series Ben 10: Ultimate Alien (below, right) and Generator Rex (below, left), which both premiered April 23, helped boost Cartoon Network’s primetime ratings during the second quarter of 2010. From its premiere through June 18, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien grew 62% over the same period in 2009 with kids 2-11 and 68% with boys 2-11. From its premiere through June 18, Generator Rex grew 33% over the same time period last year with kids 2-11 and 36% with boys 2-11. Adventure Time, a new Monday-night series, also helped boost Cartoon Network’s primetime ratings. From its April 5 premiere through June 28, Adventure Time grew 86% over the same period in 2009 with kids 2-11 and 85% with boys 2-11. Overall, Cartoon The four-day event included screenings of more than 50 films, celebrity appearances and panel discussions. Stars who appeared at the festival included Mel Brooks, Luise Rainer, Ernest Borgnine, Alec Baldwin, Eva Marie Saint, Tony Curtis, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Martin Landau, Anjelica Huston, Danny Huston, Buck Henry, Eli Wallach, Esther Williams, Betty Garrett, Peter Bogdanovich, Stanley Donen, Norman Lloyd, Nancy Olson, Tim Roth, Illeana Douglas, Tab Hunter, Susan Kohner, Juanita Moore, Darryl Hickman, Curtis Hanson, John Badham, Richard Rush and special effects artist Douglas Trumbull. The festival also featured screenings of numerous restored films, including Warner Bros.’ 1954 musical A Star is Born, which had its world premiere at the openingnight event. Based on the success of the festival in its first year, TCM announced it will return in Spring 2011. CNN to Launch Nightly Program Hosted by Eliot Spitzer and Kathleen Parker Network grew in primetime during the second quarter of 2010, with 11% delivery growth among kids 2-11 and 9% delivery growth with kids 6-11 compared to the second quarter of 2009. Total-day delivery during the second quarter of 2010 was also up 9% with kids 2-11 and 3% with kids 6-11 compared to the second quarter of 2009. C NN announced in June that former New York governor Eliot Spitzer and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Kathleen Parker will co-host a spirited, nightly roundtable discussion program. The new program, set to debut this fall, will air weeknights at 8 p.m. Eastern time. Spitzer, a legendary prosecutor and progressive governor, and Source: All ratings data from Nielsen Media Research 3 Summer 2010 tURNER B ROADCAS T ING DC Comics Launches Digital Publishing D C Comics, publisher of Superman, Batman, Green Lantern and Fables, announced in June that it has partnered with comiXology and PlayStation Network on two separate digital comics distribution deals and unveiled a DC Comics app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. These distribution deals and apps offer consumers easy ways to access DC Comics’ content digitally. Both the comiXology and the PlayStation Network Digital Comics launch offerings include classic titles from DC Comics, Vertigo and WildStorm, such as Batman: Hush, Green Lantern: Rebirth, Fables: Legends in Exiles and Planetary: All Over the World and Other Stories. To promote these initiatives, a free 10-page preview of the 700th issue of Superman was made available through both distribution platforms. Cartoon Network Announces Anti-Bullying Campaign C artoon Network announced in May a new campaign aimed at educating and empowering bystanders to take action to reduce and prevent bullying of kids. The on-air and online initiative will launch in October 2010 to coordinate with the fifth annual National Bullying Prevention Awareness Week (October 4 -10), sponsored by the National Center for Bullying Prevention. Cartoon Network will create a new series of public service announcements that will premiere on Friday, October 1 at 9 a.m., directing viewers to key online resources at CartoonNetwork.com developed in coordination with its recently established Bullying Prevention Advisory Board. CNN also will present a series of editorial features on bullying to provide better understanding and response options for victims, bystanders and adults. Wa r n e r B r o s . E n t e r ta i n m e n t Warner Bros.’ films Surpass $1 billion at Both Domestic and Overseas Box Office W arner Bros. announced in July that its films had surpassed the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office for the 10th consecutive year, an industry first. This followed Warner Bros.’ announcement in May that its films had surpassed $1 billion at the overseas box office in less than five months in 2010, a record for the studio. It also marked the 10th consecutive year that Warner Bros.’ films have grossed more than $1 billion overseas. Warner Bros. hit these marks on the strength of the worldwide box-office performance of such films as Sherlock Holmes ($517 million including $102 million in 2009), Clash of the Titans ($492 million), Inception ($365 million from its July 16 opening through August 1), Sex and the City 2 ($287 million) and Valentine’s Day ($213 million). The studio is gearing up for its slate of upcoming releases, including Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, Todd Phillips’s Due Date and David Yates’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I (below). Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group Acquires Turbine, Inc. W arner Bros. Home Entertainment Group announced in April the acquisition of Turbine, Inc., one of the largest online gaming studios in North America, further strengthening Warner Bros.’ position as one of the industry’s fastest growing, full-scale games publishers. Turbine has created some of the most popular and exciting gaming worlds on the Internet, including Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited and The Lord of the Rings Online (below). Previously, Warner Bros. held all The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) games rights, with the exception of the literary massively multiplayer online game rights. The Fox-owned stations have acquired the exclusive off-network broadcast television rights in 10 markets, including New York and Los Angeles. Television Group Places 26 Series on Broadcast networks’ 2010-2011 Season Schedules I n May, the U.S. television networks concluded the “upfront” week in New York, announcing their fall and midseason schedules. The Warner Bros. Television Group (WBTVG), which includes Warner Bros. Television and Warner Horizon Television, again led the industry with 26 series orders for the upcoming 2010–2011 season on U.S. broadcast networks. Combined, WBTV and WHTV scored 11 new show pickups (including two co-productions) to go with renewals on 15 current programs, marking the 19th time in the past 24 years that Warner Bros. has been the leading supplier of primetime programming to the U.S. broadcast networks. WBTVG is the only studio to have at least two shows on each of the five broadcast networks and is also the top outside supplier of programming to all the U.S. broadcast networks. The gross audience (network plays, HBO on Demand and DVR) for the third season of True Blood through July 25, 2010 averaged 12.7 million viewers per episode, topping last season’s average audience of 12.6 million viewers per episode and cementing the show as Warner Bros. Television Group’s new series for the 2010-2011 season include Undercovers (left) from J.J. Abrams and Josh Reims on NBC and Nikita starring Maggie Q on The CW. Warner Bros. Television’s The Big Bang Theory to Launch in Syndication W arner Bros. Television’s The Big Bang Theory, network television’s #1 scripted series among adults 18–49 and adults 25–54 for the 20092010 television season through May 30, 2010, is set for a multiplatform off-network syndication launch in Fall 2011 on the Fox Television Stations and Turner Broadcasting’s TBS, through a strategic partnership one of HBO’s most popular series ever. HBO announced in June that it has renewed True Blood for a 12-episode fourth season, which will begin production in early 2011 in Los Angeles, with the debut scheduled for Summer 2011. Two other HBO summer series, Hung and Entourage, also generated strong ratings, averaging gross audiences of 7.7 million and 8.1 million viewers per episode, respectively, through July 25, 2010. Source: Gross viewing based on data from Nielsen Media Research and Rentrak OnDemand Essentials 5 Summer 2010 HBO HBO TO DEBUT NEW SPIKE LEE DOCUMENTARY O n August 23, marking the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, HBO is scheduled to debut If God is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise, a follow-up to Spike Lee’s Emmy award-winning 2006 documentary (When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts) about the city of New Orleans in the wake of the devastating storm. For this new documentary, Lee returned to New Orleans to see how the ambitious plans to reinvent the city were playing out. The four-hour documentary is a continuation of the heart-rending story of destruction and rebirth of this unique American city. The film was directed and produced by Lee and edited and produced by Sam Pollard. HBO and BSkyB Enter into Multi-year Output Deal H ome Box Office and BSkyB announced in July a multiyear output deal which will see BSkyB become the home of HBO programs in the U.K. and Ireland. Under the agreement, all new HBO-commissioned programs and series will be broadcast exclusively and in high definition on BSkyB channels. The first HBO production to be seen on BSkyB as part of this output deal will be Boardwalk Empire, the Prohibition-era drama from Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese and HBO’s The Sopranos’ Emmy-winning writer Terence Winter. With a cast including Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt and Kelly Macdonald, Boardwalk Empire is scheduled to make its U.S. debut on HBO in September 2010, with a U.K. and Ireland premiere on BSkyB to follow shortly thereafter. Other HBO productions to be broadcast by BSkyB include upcoming series Game of Thrones and Luck (see story below). In addition, future seasons of current HBO series, such as Entourage and Big Love, will be broadcast exclusively on BSkyB channels in the U.K. and Ireland at the conclusion of their current broadcast rights agreements. BSkyB will also offer access to HBO programs through its on-demand platforms. HBO “Imagine” Campaign Scores at Cannes Lions Advertising Festival HBO Orders New Drama Series Luck, Starring Dustin Hoffman A H t the 57th Annual Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival in June, the HBO brand marketing effort “Imagine,” created by longtime agency partner BBDO New York, was among the most-honored campaigns at the festival, walking away with 10 Lions awards across six different categories, including two gold Lions. This follows the strong performance of the HBO Voyeur campaign at the festival two years ago. The HBO Imagine campaign was an expression and embodiment BO announced in July that it will produce a new drama series titled Luck, starring Dustin Hoffman, which takes a provocative look at horse racing – the owners, gamblers, jockeys and diverse gaming industry players. Luck, from executive producers David Milch, Michael Mann and Carolyn Strauss, is scheduled to begin shooting in Fall 2010 at Santa Anita Park and other Los Angeles locations. In addition to Hoffman, the pilot stars Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Kevin Dunn, Richard Kind, Jason Gedrick, Ritchie Coster, Ian Hart, Tom Payne, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens and Nick Nolte, with guest star Jill Hennessy. HBO Unveils Plans for Two New Original Movies H BO announced during the second quarter of 2010 that it is proceeding with the production of two new original movies – Cinema Verite and Hemingway & Gellhorn. Cinema Verite, directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini and starring Diane Lane, Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini, takes a behind-the-scenes look at the groundbreaking documentary An American Family, which chronicled the lives of the Louds in the early 1970s and catapulted the Santa Barbara family to notoriety in the creation of a new television genre – the reality TV series. Cinema Verite is scheduled to debut on HBO in 2011. Hemingway & Gellhorn, directed by Philip Kaufman and starring Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen, follows the tumultuous romance and subsequent marriage between Ernest Hemingway and the up-and-coming war correspondent Martha Gellhorn, taking them to the Spanish Civil War and beyond. Filming of Hemingway & Gellhorn is scheduled to begin in February 2011 with a debut on HBO in 2012. of the HBO philosophy – to be the preeminent source of entertainment experiences that change perspectives, defy expectations and challenge the status quo. Sports Illustrated, FORTUNE and Entertainment Weekly’s “The Must List” Debut on the iPad T ime Inc. recently announced the launches of iPad apps for Sports Illustrated, FORTUNE and Entertainment Weekly’s “The Must List.” Sports Illustrated made its debut on the iPad in June, delivering its vision for the magazine in tablet form. The SI iPad edition delivers the best of the magazine and SI.com with an array of additional features and capabilities, including The Wheel, a multi-purpose digital utility with tabs that enable sharing of SI stories and photos via email and social media; Contents Bar, a navigational tool that allows users to quickly scan every page of the magazine; live 24/7 newsfeeds and up-to-date scores and statistics; and SI Originals, Go to the following links for demos of Sports Illustrated and TIME‘s digital magazine versions. 2010 Global Forum Held in South Africa T he Global Forum, hosted by FORTUNE, TIME and CNN, was held June 26-28 in Cape Town, South Africa. The event brought together Fortune 500 CEOs, heads of state and selected members of this year’s TIME 100 (TIME magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world – see story below) to tap into the extraordinary promise of the developing world. Participants included President Bill Clinton; His Excellency Jacob G. Zuma, President, Republic of South Africa; Dick Parsons, Chairman of Citigroup and former Chairman and CEO of Time Warner; Thomas Freston, Principal, Firefly3 and former CEO of MTV Networks; Ellen J. Kullman, Chair of the Board and CEO of DuPont; Archbishop Desmond Tutu; architect Frank Gehry; and Graca Machel, a leading social and political activist and the wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela. which include exclusive video features, reports and commentary that deliver the best of SI storytelling, analysis and access. In July, FORTUNE announced the launch of its iPad app, which contains all of the content of the magazine plus additional photo slideshows, videos, archival material and exclusive bonus stories. President Bill Clinton delivered the keynote speech. Prince and Taylor Swift, who were both named to the list, performed at the event. Other attendees included Elton John, Sarah Palin, Ben Stiller, Kathryn Bigelow, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Martha Stewart, Richard Branson, Rachael Ray and J.J. Abrams. The TIME 100 list received 11 million page views on TIME. com on April 29, the day the list was announced, nearly four times the number of page views the list drew in 2009, according to Omniture. 2010 Essence Music Festival Draws more than 400,000 to New Orleans T he 2010 ESSENCE Music Festival Presented by Coca-Cola, held in New Orleans July 2-4, drew an audience of more than 400,000 to the nation’s largest annual gathering celebrating African-American music and culture. The Festival featured performances by Janet Jackson (above), Alicia Keys, Mary J Blige, LL Cool J, Gladys Knight and Earth Wind & Fire, among others. In addition, the Festival featured empowerment seminars led by Bill Cosby, Steve Harvey, Jada Pinkett Smith and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu; an all-star gospel tribute to Kirk Franklin, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Bishop Paul Morton and Pastor Deborah Morton; and its first-ever Impact New Orleans/Day of Service community initiative. 2010 also marked the signing of a three-year sponsorship extension with presenting sponsor Coca-Cola and record sponsor participation from other corporate partners including McDonald’s, WalMart, Ford and Cover Girl. PEOPLE’s Exclusive on Sandra Bullock’s Adoption Draws Strong Traffic I n a world exclusive, Sandra Bullock revealed to PEOPLE in April that she is the proud mother of Louis Bardo Bullock, a 3½-month-old boy born in New Orleans.
