We salute the landmark show in our October issue, plus bring you a Q&A with Davidoff's new CEO and show you how to avoid fake Cuban cigars. For an exclusive preview of the top-rated cigars from the issue, turn to page two. NEW CIGARS HEADING TO YOUR SMOKE SHOP WE CONTINUE OUR IN-DEPTH COVERAGE OF THE CIGARS OF IPCPR with intriguing new releases from such well-known cigar brands as Tatuaje. The Fausto by Tatuaje (far right) is described as a fuller-bodied Tatuaje. The brand is already known for strength, so these should be strong indeed. (A vertical tasting appears on page four.) For those of you who were intrigued by the debut of La Palina, but blanched at the price, the company now offers a less expensive version called La Palina El Diario (second from left). Brick House, a Nicaraguan smoke from J.C. Newman (second from right) has always been about value. The cigar has a new torpedo shape. And the makers of the Oliveros brand finally have the tobacco to come out with Aging Room (far left). See page five for more. Residual bitterness hurt the score. Body: Full BRAND SUMMARY: Originally a private blend for a Hawaiian fausto by tatuaje Wrapper: Ecuador retailer, Fausto evolved into a commercial line this summer. The name and art come from a vintage cigar brand. The horned image of Mephistopheles found on the cabinet’s lid echoes the original box art and references the tale of Dr. Faustus, who sold his soul to the devil. The Avion (also a vintage brand) is related to the Fausto line, as the blend is the same, but brand owner Pete Johnson felt Avion’s original art was almost analagous to that of Fausto’s. We found all of these cigars full bodied indeed. The Avion and FT127 were the most balanced, scoring 90 points. AGING ROOM SMALL BATCH M356 Made by: Plasencia Cigars, Nicaragua Wrapper: Nicaragua Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua Price: $6.31—$7.81 Details: This is the first cigar to sport the new, redesigned Oliveros band. Made with only Nicaraguan tobacco, it comes in four sizes: Robusto (5 by 52); Toro (6 by 50); Belicoso (6 by 54) and Churchill (7 by 48). Also: The Swag Limitado 99 is a one-size, limited release using a wrapper from a 1999 crop. The all-Dominican blended smoke measures 6 by 54 and retails for $8.50. KINKY FRIEDMAN SPECIAL EDITION Made by: Tabacos de Oriente, Honduras Wrapper: Honduras Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua, Honduras, Panama Price: $11.50 Details: Habana Cuba also distributes cigars made for Kinky Friedman, the famous singer and comedian who has long loved cigars. Anyone who knows Friedman’s humor will appreciate the name of his one-size Kinky Friedman Special Edition cigar. Known as the Big Richard, the 6 1/2 inch long, 54 ring gauge smoke was blended to his taste for Cuban-style cigars. It comes in a collector’s box of 20. HAVANA CELLARS FAUSTO BY TATUAJE Made by: Tabacalera La Palma, Dom. Rep. Wrapper: Dom. Rep. Binder: Dom. Rep. Filler: Dom. Rep. Price: $7.25—$8.50 Details: According to brand owner Rafael Nodal, Small Batch is a blend that was previously approved but delayed due to the scarcity of some of the required tobaccos. This blend uses Habano-seed ligero from the Dominican Republic. It comes in four sizes: Presto (4 1/2 by 48); Rondo (5 by 50); Mezzo (6 by 54) and Major (6 1/2 by 60). 5 Made by: My Father Cigars S.A., Nicaragua Wrapper: Ecuador Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua Price: $8.00—$8.75 Average Cigar Insider Rating: 87.8 Points Details: An offshoot of a private label made for a Hawaiian retailer, Fausto is blended to be one of Tatuaje’s most full-bodied brands. The Habano-seed wrapper is the same one used on the Tatuaje Cojonu and the bands adorning each cigar are reminiscent of the “white rose” design found on vintage Dunhill Cuban cigars (only the rose in the center of Fausto’s band is black, rather than white). The box art is taken To Subscribe Go To www.cigarinsider.com August 23, 2011 Cigar Insider from a vintage print. Four sizes are available: FT127 (5 by 54); FT140 (5 1/2 by 52); FT153 (6 by 50) and FT166 (6 1/2 by 48). The cigars just hit the market, and the entire line is rated on page four of this issue. What makes it special: Tatuajes are strong, so a stronger Tatuaje can be powerful stuff. Also: A box-pressed perfecto called Avion is an extension of the Fausto line. It measures 6 3/4 by 52 and will retail for $10. The band, which depicts an old zeppelin, was printed by Vrijdag in the Netherlands. BRICK HOUSE SHORT TORPEDO Made by: Fabrica de Tabacos San Rafael S.A., Nicaragua Wrapper: Nicaragua Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua Price: $4.95 Cigar Aficionado Rating: 90 points Details: The Brick House brand has been an undeniable hit for J.C. Newman since its 2009 launch. Combining high quality (the Brick House Robusto is one of Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 cigars of 2010) with low prices, the rich Nicaraguan smokes have done well for the Tampa, Florida, cigar company. The Short Torp (5 1/2 by 52) becomes the sixth size in the line. CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE Nicaraguan-made El Baton line. The El Baton Belicoso, which measures 5 by 56 and retails for $5.95, rated 87 points in the October Cigar Aficionado. LA CARIDAD DEL COBRE CIGARS LA CARIDAD DEL COBRE JAVELIN Made by: Tabacalera LTC SRL, Dom. Rep. Wrapper: Ecuador and Pennsylvania Binder: Dom. Rep. Filler: Dom. Rep., Nicaragua Price: $7.00 Details: This small brand has a new size, a cigar called the Javelin that measures 7 1/4 by 38. It comes in two styles, a maduro made with a Pennsylvania broadleaf wrapper and a natural featuring Ecuadoran Connecticut. LA PALINA CIGARS DIAMOND CROWN TORPEDO #8 Made by: Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia., Dom. Rep. Wrapper: U.S.A./Conn. Shade Binder: Dom. Rep. Filler: Dom. Rep. Price: $11.60 Details: When the Diamond Crown brand was created in 1995, it was revolutionary for its eye-popping ring thickness. The entire line came in 54 ring gauge—at the time, extraordinarily fat. Now that 54s have been eclipsed by 60 and fatter ring gauges, it makes sense that this newest Diamond Crown is also among the thickest. The Torpedo #8 is 5 inches long, 58 ring gauge (only the #6 Figurado, which has a 64 ring gauge, is thicker.) It will debut in the fall at Diamond Crown Lounges. LA PALINA EL DIARIO DIAMOND CROWN MAXIMUS DOUBLE ROBUSTO #6 Details: When the new La Palina cigar debuted in 2010 (the original smoke dates back to 1896), it was a $20 cigar. Creator Bill Paley wanted a more affordable version, so he turned to the maestros at Raices Cubanas, a factory that has built a reputation for creating top-quality smokes such as Illusiones, Alec Bradley Family Blends and more. While El Diario is far from cheap, it retails for about half the price of the La Palina Family Series. La Palina El Diario comes in five sizes: Churchill (7 by 50, $11.30); Torpedo (6 1/8 by 52, $11.35); Gordo (6 by 58, $11.55); Toro (6 by 50, $10.00) and Robusto (5 by 52, $9.80). “It’s a totally different cigar,” said Paley. “It’s stronger. It’s not as nuanced.” Note: Most Gordo cigars measure 6 by 60. This one is a somewhat thinner 58. Made by: Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia., Dom. Rep. Wrapper: Ecuador Binder: Dom. Rep. Filler: Dom. Rep. Price: $12.00 Details: J.C. Newman certainly focused on five-inch-long cigars for its new Diamond Crown releases. This measures 5 by 56. It comes in cabinets of 20, and will move from being a limited release to a cigar for the branded lounges. What Makes it Special: This is the first Diamond Crown Maximus to be made in a ring gauge other than 50. Also: J.C. Newman added a 5 by 56 figurado to its 7 Made by: Fabrica de Tabacos Raices Cubanas S. de R.L., Honduras Wrapper: Honduras Binder: Honduras Filler: Honduras, Nicaragua Price: $9.80—$11.55 To Subscribe Go To www.cigarinsider.com August 23, 2011 Cigar Insider LOS BLANCOS CIGAR CO. CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE PEDRO MARTíN M LIGA EXCLUSIVA DE FAMILIA Made by: Plasencia Cigars, Nicaragua Wrapper: Varies Binder: Varies Filler: Varies Price: $6.86—$8.58 Details: Liga Exclusiva was built around the type of cigars Los Blancos owners David and Cesar Blanco smoke when they visit their cousins, who own and operate the Plasencia Factory in Estelí, Nicaragua (formerly known as Segovia Cigars.) The Liga Exclusiva de Familia cigar comes in two wrapper types: Ecuadoran Connecticut and Pennsylvania Broadleaf. The blends on the cigars also differ. The Connecticut goes around filler and binder from Nicaragua and Honduras, while the bunch covered by the dark Pennsylvania leaf is entirely Nicaraguan. The binder on the broadleaf version is also stronger, making the maduro medium to full bodied, while the Connecticut is mild to medium. Both will come in boxes of 20 cigars, with six sizes: Gran Toro (6 1/4 by 60); Double Corona (7 by 54); Salomone (6 by 54); Torpedo (6 1/2 by 54); Toro (6 by 54) and Robusto (5 by 54). Also: An all-ligero, Nicaraguan puro called the JT Limitado (6 1/4 by 58) is an extension of the successful Los Blancos Nine brand, but the blend on JT has been amped up by using more ligero. The cigars will come packaged in boxes of 10 and cost $10.30 each. Made by: Tabsa, Nicaragua Wrapper: Mexico Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua Price: $6.60–$7.50 Details: The “M” in Pedro Martín M stands for Mexico, as this new brand is a Mexican-wrapped cigar that comes in boxes of 20 and is available in six sizes: Pequeño (4 1/2 by 40); Lancero (7 1/4 by 38); Robusto (5 by 50); Toro (6 by 52); Torpedo (6 1/4 by 52) and Churchill (7 by 48). PEDRO MARTíN FIERA Made by: Tabsa, Nicaragua Wrapper: Nicaragua Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua Price: $7.30—$8.50 Details: The word “fiera” translates to “fiend” or “wild” and the cigar was blended to be the strongest in the entire brand portfolio. Covered in a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper it comes in four sizes: Pequeño (4 1/2 by 40); Super Toro (6 by 54); Torpedo (6 1/4 by 52) and 6 x 60 (6 by 60). MARTíN FAMILY OF CIGARS PEDRO MARTíN ROYAL Made by: Tabsa, Nicaragua Wrapper: U.S.A./Conn. Broadleaf Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua Price: $6.60—$7.50 Details: Martín Family of Cigars is a relatively new cigar company, but it has a long legacy behind it. The company is owned by Maria Martín, formerly with Camacho Cigars. She is the daughter of Pedro Martín (1921-2010) a cigar industry luminary who began working around tobacco at the age of 15 in Cuba, and who later owned Tabacalera Tropical. While the Martín Family of Cigars is new, it now has six different varieties. Pedro Martín Royal is one of three new lines that the company introduced at the trade show, and it is available in six different sizes: Pequeño (4 1/2 by 40); Lancero (7 1/4 by 38); Robusto (5 by 50); Toro (6 by 52); Torpedo (6 1/4 by 52) and Churchill (7 by 48). 8 MIAMI CIGAR & CO. CASA MIRANDA Made by: El Titan de Bronze, U.S.A. Wrapper: Ecuador Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua Price: $10.00—$11.00 Details: This was a busy trade show for Miami Cigar, which had new release after new release. Casa Miranda, which comes wrapped in Ecuador Habano leaf, is a new American-made line that was blended by Willy Herrera (who has since left El Titan de Bronze to work for Drew Estate.) The cigar is being rolled at the tiny El Titan de Bronze factory on Calle Ocho, and comes in three sizes: Robusto (5 by 50); Toro (6 by 52) and Torpedo (6 by 52). They come packed in boxes of 20. To Subscribe Go To www.cigarinsider.com August 23, 2011 Cigar Insider Also: A limited–edition Nestor Miranda Grand Reserve cigar (only 15,000 cigars are being made) is being rolled by the Garcia family at My Father Cigars in Estelí, Nicaragua. The cigars feature dark Connecticut broadleaf wrappers around a core of all-Nicaraguan tobacco. The cigars will retail for $12 each. GUILLERMO LEóN ROBUSTO Made by: La Aurora S.A., Dom. Rep. Wrapper: Ecuador Binder: Cameroon and Dom. Rep. Filler: Peru, Dom. Rep., Brazil, Nicaragua Price: $8.50 Details: It’s hard to believe, but when Aurora S.A. launched the Guillermo Léon line in the summer of 2010, it didn’t have a robusto, the most popular cigar size in American smoke shops. The company has added one, measuring 5 inches long by 50 ring. It becomes the fifth size in the line. Like the other Guillermo Leóns, the cigar is made with two binders, a first for the Dominican company. AURORA 107 MADURO Made by: La Aurora S.A., Dom. Rep. Wrapper: Ecuador Binder: Dom. Rep. Filler: Nicaragua, Dom. Rep. Price: $6.40—$8.50 Details: Aurora has done well with its 107 line. The brand now has a maduro version, which is made with wrapper from Ecuador, rather than a more traditional maduro leaf, such as broadleaf or Mexican. The new line comes in four sizes: Corona (5 1/2 by 43); Robusto (4 1/2 by 50); Toro (5 1/2 by 54) and Belicoso (6 1/4 by 52). Also: The core Aurora line is being reblended. HUMO JAGUAR Made by: Tabacos de Oriente, Honduras Wrapper: Honduras Binder: Honduras Filler: Honduras Price: $8.80—$9.60 Details: The name of the Honduran cigar festival is now on a cigar made by the Plasencia family. Humo Jaguar is all Honduran, and it's made with tobacco from Talanga and Jamastran. The brand comes in three sizes: Robusto (5 by 52, $8.80); Corona Gorda (6 by 52, $9.10) and Gigante (6 by 60, $9.60).
