Wheeling is known regionally and nationally as the home of the Milwaukee Avenue “Restaurant Row,” and is also the part-owner of Chicago Executive Airport, the third-busiest airport in Illinois. Wheeling boasts a wide selection of housing options to serve the needs of potential residents, including world-class luxury condominiums, affordable rental properties in a variety of sizes, and single-family homes on tree-lined streets. Commuters benefit from easy access to Interstate 294, as well as from Metra rail service on the North Central Line via the Wheeling Metra Station. Wheeling residents enjoy convenient access to grocery stores and shopping centers, health care facilities, places of worship, and award-winning public schools. Wheeling Park District and Cook County Forest Preserve facilities also provide opportunities for recreation and for restorative contact with the natural world. History Incorporated in 1894, Wheeling's beginnings came as an overnight stop for travelers from Chicago who were headed to the Wisconsin Territory via the overland trail now known as Milwaukee Avenue (Illinois Route 21). The string of inns, taverns and eateries established in the 1830's was the start of what is now Wheeling's renowned Restaurant Row. Farmers took advantage of the area's fertile soil, and growing overland transportation network. Soon the stage stop community began to export its crops. Wheeling became particularly well known for its landscaping nurseries. Later, in step with the growth of Metro Chicago, Wheeling emerged as a center for industry and commerce in the 1960's. Manufacturing plants that clustered in Wheeling brought rail transportation (SOO LINE) for the shipping of freight to and from the area. These manufacturers were followed by the development of residential neighborhoods. Commercial development followed the population growth. The Wheeling Historical Society keeps the history of the community alive for posterity. The Society's Museum is located in Wheeling Park District's Chamber Park, 251 North Wolf Road. | AREA INFO 1550 sand pebble dr, unit 101 Betsy Ross Elementary School, located in Prospect Heights School District 23, is a grade level center, which houses approximately 300 second and third grade students. About Wheeling High School Wheeling High School opened in 1964 and serves the communities of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Northbrook, Prospect Heights and Wheeling. This high school boasts a culturally diverse student body, and draws its strength from embracing the rich multicultural community of students and staff. Wheeling High School is one of six high schools in Township High School District 214. Wheeling High School is a four-year, comprehensive, public high school that offers all students a 21st century focus in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). US News and World Report recently recognized Wheeling as one of the best high schools in the state of Illinois. Upon graduation, nearly 90% of its students pursue post-secondary opportunities. Wheeling High School offers a strong academic program, including 24 advanced placement courses, dual credit offerings in business, engineering, architecture and nanotechnology, as well as multiple certifications in automotive technology, computer technology, health careers, and manufacturing. Because Wheeling is a comprehensive high school with a STEM focus, you will find that technology is embedded throughout the different curricula in the school, including arts, English, and humanities classes. There are 15 computer labs and a laptop loaner program, smart boards in classrooms and a 21st century Media/Library Center. This year each freshman and sophomore will be responsible for his/her own iPad. They will use the iPad as an additional learning and sharing tool during their four years at Wheeling. Wheeling students and staff concentrate on 21st century learning, including but not limited to critical thinking, complex problem solving, collaboration while working with their peers in school and with professionals in community business settings, and effective, coherent, and technology enhanced presentations geared for both small and large groups. Through our rich curricula, learning is made relevant to students, thus helping them connect their high school experiences to their future goals and interests. In addition to the varied curricula available to the students, there are more than 75 cocurricular experiences available to our students, all of which extend the learning and teamwork introduced in the classroom setting. At Wheeling High School both our students and our staff are committed to excellence and growth. In addition to working together in a professional learning environment, staff reaches out and creates partnerships with businesses in the community. This serves a two-fold purpose as staff members enrich their own professional development through real-world application of their curricula and students engage in off-campus work/study opportunities, a chance to apply their learning in "real life" settings. 900 S.
