Why Give to CBA?
Chesapeake Bay Academy’s mission focuses on empowering each child with the understanding of
how they learn and offers them the skills necessary to utilize their strengths in order to manage the
challenges they face daily. CBA teachers provide their students with a learning environment that builds
their self-esteem and leads them on the path to opportunity and success.
The parents of a new CBA student recently said, “We are so blessed to have found Chesapeake Bay
Academy for our son… The impact this school has made on him is extraordinary and continuous.”
The wonderful work CBA does for its students is accomplished through the dedication of the entire
community – faculty and staff, board of trustees, parents and grandparents, as well as numerous
supporters from the community-at-large. It is our work together that provides the platform upon which
our students can stand strong and reach heights previously unimagined by them and their families.

Upper School
Students began working in a completely paperless environment using tablet computers, e-books,
and Edmodo - a web-based management system. Edmodo joins teachers, students and parents in a
cloud-based platform that keeps everyone organized and in clear communication.
Dear CBA Community,
It is my privilege to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees during the 25th anniversary of the founding of
Chesapeake Bay Academy (CBA). We owe a debt of gratitude to the four founding families for their vision,
leadership and generosity in coming to the aid of a financially-distressed school and reconfiguring it into
Chesapeake Bay Academy. Because of their fortitude and enduring support over the past 25 years, CBA
Curriculum flipping was introduced allowing students to view their class lectures at home and spend
valuable class time actively engaged with their teachers in hands-on and project-based learning.
Digital design and photography instructor, Mr. Andy Harris, and his yearbook committee received an
award from Walsworth Publishing Company for their design of the 2013 yearbook.
has transformed the lives of thousands of children and their families.
We are also indebted to our community of donors, without whom we could not have built the school
building and kept the lights on. As you know, tuition covers only about 70% of the cost of operating
the school. The other 30% must be raised from other sources in order to close the budgetary gap. It is
the generosity of our donors that allows us to balance the budget and provide tuition assistance to
approximately 50% of our students each year.
This is an exciting year for CBA. We have a new stage in the Commons, allowing us to expand our
commitment to the arts. CBA started a school band and in the near future will sponsor student musical
performances and other special programs. We are in the second phase of our capital campaign,
which will provide the funds to make much needed repairs and improvements to the physical plant,
provide professional development for our faculty and staff, continue funding the tuition assistance
program, and strengthen our endowment with the goal of ensuring the long-term viability of
Chesapeake Bay Academy.

Science Fair - May, 2014
All students participated in this year’s science fair. Projects were completed collaboratively by each
classroom and included a number of fun and thought-provoking experiments. Winning projects included
“Fly or Flop” by Ms. Lowe’s 6th grade class (Grand Champion Award), “Pumping Iron” by Mrs. Slocum’s
8th grade science class (Creative Genius Award) and “Are you a Superstar?” by Mrs. Nobre’s Dream 2
class (Out-of-the-Box-Award).
Art Show - June, 2014
CBA students demonstrated amazing talent in the visual arts. Their pieces included sketches, oil and
watercolor paintings, 3-D art, as well as beautiful pieces of pottery fired in our brand new kiln purchased
through “Fund-A-Cause.” The annual art show is truly not to be missed!

Middle School
The middle school piloted Learning Upgrade, an interactive, online curriculum. The program uses songs,
videos and games designed specifically to reinforce math facts and concepts.

The practice of Mindfulness was introduced to enhance students’ focus and attention, and improve
academic performance.
Dear Friends and Families of CBA,
“Yankee Doodle Dandy,” the middle school & 6th grade concert, debuted in April to families, friends, faculty and staff. Students sang their way through the life and work of George M. Cohan.
In October, 1989, a small group of incredibly devoted and generous families turned a foggy vision into
a clear reality when they founded Chesapeake Bay Academy. Over the past 25 years, a dedicated group
of individuals have ensured the continued growth and stability of CBA. I am truly awestruck by the
outpouring of time, talent and generous financial support that has been shared so selflessly over these

Rare Disease Day, and collecting canned goods for the Food Bank. Teachers focused on the importance
of helping those in need.
The 9th grade took in the sights and sounds of Washington, DC, over Presidents’ Day weekend. Students
took the train into Union Station and walked all over the city for three days visiting the Smithsonian, the
Holocaust Museum and a host of memorials.

MaryAnne and Sande Dukas whose leadership and personal commitment to the success of CBA was
unwavering. All of these individuals are owed a deep debt of gratitude by the entire Hampton Roads
community for everything they have invested of themselves so that Chesapeake Bay Academy could
serve as a unique resource to children and their families throughout the area.
Clearly, the on-going success of CBA has required the efforts of many individuals - parents and
grandparents, faculty and staff, political, business and foundation leaders, medical professionals, and
a host of others – who believed in our mission. In the following pages you will learn of the tremendous
number of supporters who’ve continued to make this outstanding educational opportunity available
to all students who would benefit through their philanthropic commitment to CBA.
The future is bright here at CBA. From our humble beginnings, with the support of so many, we have
come to a place of prominence in the educational landscape of Hampton Roads. Thank you for being

Our History
1989: Chesapeake Bay Academy was founded in Norfolk, VA by a group of parents who were committed
to creating a learning environment where their children would be known, appreciated, and most of all,
understood.
1993: CBA moved to classroom space in the Heritage United Methodist Church on Baker Road in Virginia
Beach.
2000: CBA receives accreditation by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS), and settled
into our current 50,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art home in Virginia Beach.
2010: CBA launches the Dominion Education Center to provide supplemental services to families
throughout Hampton Roads.
What’s Next…
In this, our 25th year, it is the perfect time for us to take stock of all that has come before. In the
year 2000, CBA students assisted with the wiring of the (then) new building to bring the Internet alive.
Today, those same students would be impressed to see where we’ve come with the use of Edmodo
(an on-line social learning network), blended and online curriculum, curriculum flipping, eMediaVA, iPads
and endless apps, and a host of hardware and software innovations that make learning so much more
accessible to our exceptional learners. In the coming years, CBA will continue to explore the uses of
technology that are so much a part of our history and move them forward into the 21st century to
personalize instruction for our students even further.
While we continue to grow, we maintain the same commitment to our students that inspired our
founders. Today, CBA is forging new relationships with university partners (College of William & Mary,
Regent University, ODU, TCC), community organizations (WHRO, CHADD) and professional organizations
(International Dyslexia Association, Council for Exceptional Children) all of whom share our goal of
making an excellent education accessible to children with learning differences.

Legacy of Outstanding Leadership
In July of 1994, when Mrs. Dukas became Head of Chesapeake Bay Academy, the school served 36
students with learning differences, ages 5 – 12. The program consisted of 5 classrooms with 15 employees
and 11 computers. Today, CBA is a K-12 school with over 40 employees serving 100 students in a
state-of-the-art building, offering students 1-1 personal technology plus 5 computer labs. MaryAnne’s
perseverance and tenacity moved CBA forward exponentially, for which we extend our deepest gratitude.

Embracing 21st Century Education
Last July, Dr. Jankowski assumed the headship at CBA and has worked steadfastly over the past 18
months to build on the school’s reputation as a leader in the educational community of Hampton Roads.
Through the establishment of a collaborative vision, developed in cooperation with the faculty and board,
CBA has embraced 1-1 technology and worked to develop a truly personalized approach to learning for
each student with technology at its core. Networking with institutions and professionals across the
area, Judy looks to the future of education and inspires the faculty to keep CBA at the cutting edge
of innovation.

Lower School
The lower school welcomed Mrs. Kristen Rossi as Division Director and had a busy year full of fun new
activities and differentiated learning initiatives.
Many iPads were integrated into lower school across the curriculum. Last year CBA became a 1-1
technology school with every student in the building working with their own personal computing device.
The lower school incorporated the Listening Ears program into the curriculum. Sponsored by the Virginia
Beach SPCA, the program helps reluctant readers develop their oral reading skills by having them read
aloud to a furry friend.
A number of lower school students participated in social skills instruction with Ms. Rhonda Osisek,
Director of the “Social Butterflies” program, offered through the Dominion Education Center.
Parents attended newly offered Parent Coffees, with Mrs. Rossi and Dr. Jankowski, to learn more about
new developments in the lower school, as well as to share their thoughts and ideas.

Athletics
Senior Jack Wagner was named Hampton Roads Athletic Conference Varsity Basketball Player of the Year.
Jack is the third CBA student to receive this award over the last ten years. The recipient of this award
is selected by the coaches from all conference schools from a pool of nearly one hundred players.
Congratulations, Jack!
The girls volleyball team supported CBA’s participation in the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure by suiting
up in pink uniforms. Go, Lady Dolphins!
Students and parents alike joined together at the annual Fun Run and Family Picnic in October. A total
of 372 total laps were run in support of the Athletic Department. Many members of the Board of Trustees
lent a hand by donating $1 for every lap run.
Students’ feet were jumpin’ and their hearts were pumpin’ as they raised over $4,000 for the American
Heart Association through their participation in Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart.
Fine Arts
In an art contest sponsored by The Virginia Aquarium, CBA students took home top honors in several
categories. Winners included Alison Kirsch, Donald “D” Glenum, and Joe Alvarez.
Upper school students, under the guidance of their teacher, Mr. Andy Harris, created a beautiful new
mural for the Commons. The mural was designed by Mr. Harris, executed by all of the upper school art
students and funded by the Parent Association. A tremendous collaborative effort!
A new high-fire kiln offered students the opportunity to produce beautiful and functional, food-safe
ceramics. In addition to a wide variety of sculptures and other ceramic works, a beautiful set of
vases was created by the art classes and offered for sale at the annual auction.

3rd Annual Golf Classic – October, 2013
Eighty-seven golfers and numerous sponsors and volunteers gathered at Bayville Golf Club and raised
$33,633 in support of Chesapeake Bay Academy. The weather was perfect and the golfers played 18
holes of “best ball.” Although the outing was full day of fun and games, the funds raised through our
golf tournament serve the serious purpose of providing financial support to our families who require
tuition assistance.

18th Annual Auction: Puttin’ on the Ritz & Fund-A-Cause - February, 2014
This year, CBA’s annual action was co-chaired by Sharon Sharp and Sally Elstrodt. The evening was
truly the “bee’s knees” as 215 guests attended CBA’s biggest night of the year. As always, the gym and
Commons were covered exquisitely in period decorations crafted by CBA parent, Su Sharak, mom of
Stefan Sharak, Class of ‘19. The evening included silent and live auction items, a game of Heads or
Tails, and the raffle for a 2013 Honda Insight Hybrid provided by Checkered Flag Auto Group.
The evening also unveiled our annual Fund-A-Cause; this year’s focus was the renovation of the Commons
including a new stage/performing arts area, allowing for the expansion of our music and dramatic arts
offerings. Through the generosity of our donors, over $86,000 was raised for Fund-A-Cause! Thanks

CBA families, friends, faculty and staff shared a beautiful fall afternoon in support of the Department of Athletics
and Wellness. Forty participants walked, jogged and ran in the annual “Fun Run.” Awards were earned by Joe Alvarez,
grade 6 (Lower School – Most Laps), Jacob Beaver, grade 8 (Middle School – Most Laps), Michael Delianidies, grade
10 (Upper School – Most Laps) and Dawn French, mom of Beau, grade 7 (Adult – Most Laps).
Parent Association Fall Frenzy - October, 2013
The Parent Association provided a fun and family-friendly Halloween celebration full of costumes, games, treats,
(a few tricks) as well as some great prizes. It was truly a SPOOK-TACULAR event!
Grandfriends Day – November, 2013
CBA students invited grandparents and special friends to spend the day meeting their classmates and teachers
as they participated in a variety of Thanksgiving themed crafts and classes. The building was teeming with
excitement as our students shared their CBA experiences with those near and dear to them.
Homecoming - January, 2014
After celebrating throughout the week, homecoming day festivities kicked off with a picnic for current students followed
by the annual alumni vs. faculty basketball game. That evening, alumni gathered for a tailgating party as families,
faculty and staff cheered the Dolphins on through multiple victories against Friends School. GO DOLPHINS!
Board, Faculty & Staff Luncheon – April, 2014
The Board of Trustees shared a lovely lunch with the faculty and staff. The relaxed atmosphere offered the
opportunity for open dialogue. Board members shared their insights on strategic objectives as faculty and staff
offered their perspectives drawn from day-to-day school life. It was the launch of what is certain to become
an important annual tradition.
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast – May, 2014
Administrators, faculty and staff all came together to demonstrate their gratitude to the volunteers that make so many
special things happen at CBA. In addition to a delicious homemade feast, attendees heard from keynote speaker
Angela Blackwell Carter, Vice-President of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, who shared her inspirational
thoughts around the importance of volunteerism. Iola Malapira was presented with the 2014 Heart & Soul Award for
her leadership as President of the Parent Association.
Retirement Party for Suzette Rashkind – May, 2014
Certainly not a “goodbye,” more of a “thank you for all you have done!” Over 25 years, Mrs. Rashkind’s many
roles at CBA included service as President of the Parent Association, receptionist and Special Events Coordinator.
The celebration was CBA’s gift for a quarter century of dedication by Suzette and the Rashkind family.
Graduation – June, 2014
Congratulations to our 2014 graduates; Rachel Sarah Berman, Edward Clark, Zachary Mullen, Kyle Owens and
Jack Wagner. CBA takes great pride in our 15th graduating class and is certain that each of them will go on to
do great things!

CHADD (Children and Adults with ADHD)
Last September, CBA opened its doors and became the new home for CHADD in Hampton Roads. Monthly
meetings of the chapter are held at CBA on the second Thursday of each month offering speakers on a wide
range of topics that touch individuals and families managing attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
International Dyslexia Association (IDA)
CBA has been a member of IDA for many years. Last fall, IDA and CBA partnered in a new event to raise funds
in support of a CBA student with dyslexia. The first annual “Poker Run” was held at Poppa’s Restaurant and
featured raffles and a silent auction in support of CBA 6th grader, Makayla Jacques. Recently, Dana Calo, CBA’s
Director of Enrollment Management, joined the Board of the Virginia Branch of IDA.
WHRO
During the 2013-14 school year, CBA joined in partnership with WHRO to support both our students and
faculty. With WHRO offering numerous excellent technology-based resources, CBA began by integrating the
eMediaVA database. This database offers a wide range of electronic artifacts that can be accessed by faculty
and students, alike. In addition, the database contains a wide range of fun and engaging apps that lower school
students access via iPads to reinforce basic skills. This summer, faculty received additional training on the use
of eMediaVa and are working to integrate it further into their daily instructional practice.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF)
This fall, CBA 9th and 10th grade students were offered the opportunity to spend the day on the Lynnhaven
River participating in an Environmental Education Program offered by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. CBA
students learned about some of the various species that live in the bay and utilized different maritime tools and
methods to collect data and gain a better understanding of this valuable and unique resource.
Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC)
Since the year 2000, CBA and VWC have been good neighbors and great partners in education. This year we
have expanded the activities offered to all of our students. CBA students now use the facilities in the Batten
Student Center to expand their physical education opportunities; Upper School students utilize the pool and
fitness facilities on a weekly basis. At the same time, VWC students regularly observe in CBA classrooms
offering learning opportunities for students in the Education and Psychology Departments.
Regent University
Last spring CBA began discussions with Regent University to open our doors as a satellite site for teachers
seeking a Master’s Degree in Special Education. The program will follow the cohort model and will be offered in
a blended (part on-line, part on-site) format. At this time, six CBA teachers have been accepted to the program
and will begin their studies in January, 2015.
