Corinaldo Albergo Diffuso
A new form of hospitality reserved for those who wish to stay
in an urban context of considerable historical significance and
experience the area in close contact with its residents, while still
benefiting from traditional hotel services such as breakfast and
the restaurant service. This is the concept defined by the term
Albergo Diffuso: a “horizontal” system composed of various
facilities offering accommodation in stately homes and former
religious buildings distributed within the old town centre; a
unique form of hospitality as it allows tourists to experience
the locations they stay in by partaking in the daily routine,
times and customs of the area.
Choosing Corinaldo as the base for a visit to the Marche region
brings the possibility of visiting the main sites of interest for
tourists in the region, in addition to the cities of art located in
central Italy. A short trip of perhaps a few minutes or hours
also allows visitors also to enjoy moments of relaxation in
close contact with nature, discover the typical wine and food
products that grace the area’s cuisine, stroll through the old
town centre and benefit from all the services provided to make
any holiday complete and comfortable.
Corinaldo Albergo Diffuso offers its guests:
3 accommodation sites
50 rooms
1 restaurant
1 swimming pool
50 electric pedal-assisted bicycles
27 all-inclusive tours and excursions

Corinaldo
Historical Highlights
The old town centre of Corinaldo, positioned on one of the six
hills spanned by the municipality, is one of the most beautiful
historical villages to grace the Marche Region. It is very likely
that its name derives from “Curia di Rinaldo”, the name with
Lombard origins that was used to identify the first residential
centre in the Early Middle Ages. Historically, the first mention of Corinaldo dates back to the year one thousand A.D.,
when settlements were transformed into fortified villages all
over central Italy, in the “castling” process which had become
necessary due to the wave of Saracen, Hungarian and Norman
invasions. During the crisis of the feudal system, Corinaldo’s
strategic location between the March of Ancona and Montefeltro
caused it to be surrounded and disputed by opposing Guelph
and Ghibelline factions warring for power. It was completely
destroyed and then rebuilt from scratch with the city wall as
it stands today: 912 metres of wall, almost all of which can
be completely travelled, marked with gates, ramparts and
defence towers. Still perfectly preserved, the walls make the
historical town centre of Corinaldo a rare example of military
architecture, a fortified city capable of resisting the sieges that
were to follow in subsequent centuries. In 1517, Corinaldo
rose to obtain the status of city, appointed by Pope Leo X who
recognised the city’s merit in having resisted the siege of the
Duke of Urbino for 23 days. The powerful city walls, known
for being the most intact and fortified ones of their kind in
the Marche region, embrace a historical town centre full of
Baroque and neo-Classical monuments, including churches and
stately homes that were built there from the 1600s, proof of an
increasingly widespread wellbeing. These still contain precious
works of art created in the Renaissance period: amongst the
artists present in Corinaldo at the time, the most noteworthy
were painter Claudio Ridolfi and organist Gaetano Callido.
The backbone of the historic town centre is the Piaggia, the
flight of one hundred steps which hosts the annual historical
re-enactment of the Dispute of the Well of Polenta.
If, on one hand, each year Corinaldo attracts many fans of
medieval history, on the other hand, it also has a deep spiritual
calling which attracts pilgrims from all over the world. Famous
as the birthplace of St. Maria Goretti, the Holy Child, Corinaldo
is today a destination visited by pilgrims all year round. The
faithful can visit the Saint’s birthplace – which still contains
the original furniture of the period and in which a chapel has
been created for prayer – and the Diocesan Sanctuary of St.
Maria Goretti in the historic town centre. Here, there is a silver
urn containing the bone of the Saint’s arm, the same arm with
which the Martyr attempted to defend herself from her aggressor.
With its particular vocation for welcoming visitors, Corinaldo
is a tourist destination full of treasures. It offers numerous
opportunities for experiencing the sights and sounds of the
area in itineraries on the trail of history and culture, religion
and nature, not to mention fine food and wine.

Corinaldo
Folklore
Corinaldo is known throughout the area as
“the Village of Madmen”, thanks to several characters from the past whose strange
behaviour has contributed to generating the
village folklore: events and situations which
have become grotesque as they have been
passed down by word of mouth through the
ages and which today form the lifeblood and
cultural heritage of the entire community.
THE WELL OF POLENTA
This tale tells of a farmer who was climbing
up the long set of stairs in the village with
a sack of corn flour on his shoulders. When
he reached the well, he was exhausted and
placed the sack on its edge to get his breath
back. To his great misfortune, the sack fell
into the well, and the poor man, desperate
to get it back, also fell in and remained there
for quite some time. The villagers, failing to
see him come back out, began to say that he
was devouring the polenta in the well. There
are many original, but different versions of
this story, which have contributed to giving
the inhabitants of Corinaldo the nickname
“polentari” (polenta-eaters).
SCURETTO’S HOUSE
Scuretto’s house stands in Via del Pozzo della
Polenta. Observe it carefully: wouldn’t you
say that something is missing? Well, Scuretto
was a simple man who liked to spend his
free time in the village bars. His son, who
had immigrated to America, regularly sent
money home so that his father could build
him a house in Corinaldo. But as you can
guess, this money ended up in the barmen’s
pockets and work on the new house failed
to proceed. One day, Scuretto’s son asked
his father to send him a photo of the new
house, so Scuretto craftily built the facade,
added the street number and curtains at the
windows and had a photograph taken.
14
He then sent the photo to his son, but needless to say, he was not taken in and stopped
sending money home.
THE FIG WOOD CANNON
This unique story tells of the historic rivalry
between Corinaldo and the nearby town
of Montenovo (Ostra Vetere). One day, the
inhabitants of Corinaldo had a brilliant idea
which they believed would bring about the
fall of Montenovo: they took the trunk of a
fig tree, hollowed it out and used it to make
a cannon. When everything was ready, the
townspeople assembled on the city walls to
watch it be fired. Seven of them courageously
volunteered to hold it while the commander
lit the fuse. A tremendous boom followed,
accompanied by a cloud of smoke. When
the smoke cleared, the lifeless bodies of the
seven brave volunteers could be seen lying
on the ground. The commander exclaimed:
“The cannon fired hard, in fact so hard that
here it killed seven people…just think how
many it will have killed in Montenovo”.

1 Torre dello Sperone
Symbol of the city walls of Corinaldo, it is a
powerful pentagonal tower around 18 metres
tall, the tallest in the entire complex. It was built
to defend the bridge house which was located
in the spot where the Church of Suffrage stands
now. Inside, it features a shrine dedicated to the
victims of war. On the walls to the east of the
tower, an opening created in the early 1900s to
facilitate the access of the first motor vehicles
to the historical town centre, is visible.
could be fired. From the top we can see the
sphaeristerium below, or the playing field used
for hand football, popular in Corinaldo from the
19th century until the years before the Second
World War. Descending the steep road, we find
ourselves on a walkway, from which we can
admire the city walls of Corinaldo in all their
glory and which reach a height of 15 metres in
this point. Ahead, we reach the lowest part of
the walls, dominated by the mass of Porta S.
Maria del Mercato.
4 Porta Santa Maria del Mercato
2 Porta San Giovanni
This is an imposing structure composed of an entrance archway in the centre and buildings that
hosted the home of the Bargello (captain of the
people) and his guard corps. Many of its original
defence elements are preserved there unaltered,
including the “bianchetta”, a small door to the left
of the archway that gave access to the centre at
night or in the periods of siege. The runners of the
beams that were part of the drawbridge, the door
hinges and the holes where the beams were inserted
to bar the door are still visible. On the wall to the left
of the entranceway, in a niche cut into a mouth of
fire there is an image of the Virgin in 18th century
paper maché, which is particularly venerated by the
population. In the opening towards the centre, past
the ogival archway, it is possible to see a slit where
an iron shutter ran, an extreme defence mechanism
used to fend off attackers. Turning towards the
well of the bargello, we reach the terrace over the
archway, where it is possible to admire panoramas
of both the centre and the countryside. Here too
there are many elements typical of the military
architecture of the 14th and 15th centuries, such
as archers, arquebuses, brackets, machicolations
and crenelations. Following the bend on the left
of the archway of the slayer, we reach the tower
that bears the same name.
3 Torre dello Scorticatore
This tower was specifically designed to defend
Porta S. Giovanni and especially Porta S. Maria
del Mercato, as a location from where low shots
A defence structure composed of two parts,
built in two subsequent periods: a 14th century
archway with an ogival form, providing access to
the steps in Via Piaggia, with epigraphs bearing
the year of construction and a polygonal rampart
with another entranceway, perpendicular to the
previous one, added in 1400. On this second gate,
we can see several remains of the drawbridge.
The rampart built to defend the most ancient
gate presents an internal courtyard designed to
defend the village from any attackers that may
have succeeded in bypassing the first archway. At
the top of the archway, on the exterior, there is a
niche containing an image of St. Anna, patron
saint of Corinaldo. When the sieges subsided, the
archway built in 1400 was improved aesthetically and used as the foundations of a gaming
house for the nobles of Corinaldo. Returning
up towards the left of the great stairway in the
bend we come across the Midday Tower or the
Torre del Mangano.
4
5 Torre del Mangano
It is named after the street which bears the same
name and the mangle, an ancient tool used to
wring fabrics, positioned here until 1940. Proceeding up along the road, we reach the Torre
del Calcinaro.
jutting out over the road below, and it was
therefore demolished and rebuilt at the end of
the 1800s, in its current form, so bringing it into
line with the nearby Torre della Rotonda and
Porta Nuova. Proceeding upwards, we reach the
Torre della Rotonda.
6 Torre del Calcinaro
7 Torre della Rotonda
Originally the tower had a pentagonal layout
and was endowed with a thick ridge dangerously
The Torre della Rotonda, with its semi-circular
plan, is part of the extension added during the
Renaissance. Work began in 1484 and ended in
1490. Looking south from its terrace, we can see
where the two perimeter walls join. From a grille
in the centre of the terrace a domed shooting
room is visible. Ahead, again towards the bend,
we enter a road characterised by a series of small
bridges which reach the walls: Via dei Landroni.

This is a colonnaded corridor formed by the
raising of the 18th century stately buildings lo-
cated along Via del Corso. The route is extremely
striking and brings us to the third entranceway
to the historical town centre, Porta Nova.
9 Porta Nova
In chronological order, this is the last entrance to
Corinaldo Castle to be built, dating back to the
Renaissance period. The great tower contains a
domed shooting room; it is possible to climb up
over the tower using the set of steps positioned
to the left of the main opening. The entrance
archway was significantly extended in the early
20th century to allow the first public transport
vehicles access to the centre. Exiting from Porta
Nova, on the right we access the last section of
the wall, located in Viale dietro le Monache, a
striking wide road where various towers can be
seen incorporated in the 18th century buildings
above, which still feature mouths of fire and
traces of crenelations. The wall comes full circle
in Piazza della Fontana, beneath the former
convent of the Benedictine Nuns.

Historical Re-enactment of the
Dispute of the Well of Polenta
From Porta di Santa Maria del Mercato, we reach the majestic
stairs in Via Piaggia, at the centre of which we find the Well of
Polenta, the backdrop for the historical costume re-enactment
of the 16th century event, now in its 36th edition, the oldest
event of its kind in the province of Ancona. The celebrations
of 1517 which followed the failure of the Duke of Urbino to
besiege the city are evoked with art shows, archery contests
and the Palio of the various districts. The event is also the
occasion on which the tale of The Well of Polenta is re-told,
together with that of the fig wood cannon. The festival is held
every year for four days, in the third weekend in July. The
costumes can be viewed all year round in the Costume Gallery
and Museum of Popular Tradition.

20 The Town Hall
Built between 1784 and 1791, it is a notable example
of neo-classical architecture with a long loggia
looking over Via del Corso. In addition to the public
offices, it originally also hosted the school, the
apartment of the city magistrates, the court rooms
and the Palace Chapel. On the ground floor, visitors
can see the cannon made of fig tree wood, used
during the historical re-enactment of the Dispute of
the Well. From the large staircase, we access the large
Arnaldo Ciani hall, which contains the portraits of
several noble citizens who made Corinaldo famous.
The collection can be viewed in the opening hours
of the Municipal Building, from Monday to Friday
from 9am to 1pm and on Tuesday and Thursday
also between 3.30pm and 6.15pm.
22 Carlo Goldoni City Theatre
A jewel of civil architecture, the Theatre was built
between 1861 and 1869, based on a design by Alessandro Pasqui from Florence, with the participation
of the engineers Francesco Fellini, Crescentino
Quagliani and Achille Buffoni; it featured a system by which the audience could be lifted up to
reach the level of the stage, a useful function for
creating a single floor on which to hold balls and
masked New Year’s Eve parties. Restored in 2006,
all its contraptions have been lost, from the lifting
system to the stage machinery. In the period from
December to May of each year, the theatre season
gets underway, attracting audiences from towns
throughout the province.
23 The 15th century House
A rare example of rural architecture, this is the
oldest residential building in Corinaldo. Laid out
over three floors, it hosted the cow shed on the
ground floor, the kitchen on the first floor and
the common room on the top floor. The façade,
with its small openings and the perch placed on
iron hooks remains unchanged. It currently serves
as the headquarters of the Corinaldo Pro Loco
(Community Association).
The noble palaces
From 1400 onwards, all the noble families of Corinaldo built splendid houses that symbolised their
prestige. Over the centuries, these residences were the
subject of continuous renovation and improvement
interventions, and often proved to be true works
of art in architectural terms.

The country villas
From the end of the 18th century to the beginning
of the 20th century, the noble families in the area
built country residences or hunting lodges in line
with the trends popular at that time, often renovating
old buildings within their grounds. These always
had gardens of a decent size, where fountains set
in a context featuring trees and bushes, often of an
exotic nature, created particularly striking spectacles.
The most notable examples are: the villas of the
Count Brunori families in Via S. Apollonia, Villa
Grandi in Viale Raffaello, Villa Venturoli Orlandi
Romaldi in Viale degli Eroi, the Sandreani Villa
in Madonna del Piano and the S. Isidoro Villa,
the country residence of the Augustinians at the
Burello, but most of all, the villa of Counts Cesarini
Romaldi (closed to visitors) with its eclectic park,
in Via del Montale.

53 Claudio Ridolfi City Art Collection
The Corinaldo picture gallery is located in some of
the rooms within the former convent of the Order
of Hermits of St Augustine. The art collection,
mainly composed following the suppression of the
religious orders and the consequent forfeiture of
their assets, not only includes many paintings with
religious subjects, but also precious religious ornaments which are examples of the so-called “rural
arts”. In particular, there are eighteen splendid bust
reliquaries sculpted, painted wood, the extremely
fine work of Sicilian sculptors from the early 1600s
and a beautiful cross used to head processions
in embossed silver, dated 1615, from the former
Augustinian complex. These have been joined by
altarpieces recovered from churches demolished
during the nineteenth century and finally, canvases
deposited there by other churches in Corinaldo. The
picture gallery contains works by Ercole Ramazzani, Giuseppe Bastiani, Claudio Ridolfi, Domenico

Peruzzini and Giuseppe Marchesi and also several
works from the vast production of Nori de’ Nobili,
an artist from the Marche region of the 1900s, whose
passion for the figurative arts generated pictorial
works of an extremely high level. The collection is
open every day from 10am to 12.30pm and from
3.30pm to 7pm.

are established by the Circolo ACLI of Madonna del

and 1pm-8pm, open weekdays by booking only.
54 Madonna del Piano Museum and the Santa Maria in Portuno
Archeological Park
Located in the rooms beneath the Town Hall, it
contains the clothes worn during the historical
re-enactment of the Dispute of the Well of Polenta.
These garments are created each year by local
dressmakers and are only used once, then exhibited here, documenting the evolution of the 16th
century costume, year after year. The tools used to
work the fabrics are also on display. The Gallery is
open: from 1 July to 31 August, from Monday to
Friday between 9am and 12pm and between 4pm
and 7pm, on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to
12pm and between 5pm and 7pm. During the rest
of the year, it is open at the weekend on request.
The exhibition hall inside the Madonna del Piano
church features didactic layouts that go from the
reconstruction of the ancient environment to the
production activities performed during the Roman
period. Period vases and a stratigraphy of the excavations are also on display. One sector is dedicated
to the monastery and all the religious, cultural
and productive activities. Other displays present a
collection of ceramic materials, items in stone and

Religious Itinerary
The birthplace of St Maria Goretti, Corinaldo
is a spiritual land: its Sanctuary and no less
than ten religious buildings within or near the
historical town centre are proof of the town’s
ancient link with the Church, and attract pilgrims from all over the world.

10 Church of the Madonna del Piano
13 Church of the Suffrage
This is the most ancient church in the diocese
of Senigallia: the apse and the remains of the
crypt place the building between the 5th and 6th
centuries, but the location’s previous name “Santa
Maria in Portuno” testifies to the existence in that
location of a pagan temple dedicated to the cult
of the God Portunes. In the Early Middle Ages,
it was undoubtedly the most important sacred
place in the Corinaldo area. The apse preserves a
Magdalene at the feet of the Cross, an extremely intense expressive work by Claudio Ridolfi.
The rooms near the sacristy host a museum that
documents the archaeological history of the site.
In Piazza del Cassero, where the rock of Corinaldo
stood in ancient times, we now find the Church
of the Suffrage, built in the year 1600. Inside it
contains a large altarpiece by Claudio Ridolfi. The
domed vault with lacunars preserves an interesting
floor in cotto decorated with geometric shapes
similar to those on the coffered ceiling.
11 Collegiate of St Francis
The headquarters of the parish, this church, with
its incomplete facade, has a Latin cross layout
with a single nave featuring side chapels, and a
transept topped by a dome and an apse. Built in
1281 and renovated many times over the centuries,
it preserves three paintings by Claudio Ridolfi. The
third side chapel on the right contains a precious
wooden Crucifix made in 1575 by the sculptor
Donnino from Urbino. The collegiate contains the
baptism font used to baptise St Maria Goretti on
17 October 1890.
12 Diocesan Sanctuary
of Santa Maria Goretti
The Sanctuary is located at the top of the historical
town centre, which can easily be identified by its
bell tower, which towers over the rooftops. The
mortal remains of Maria’s mother, Assunta, who
died in Corinaldo in 1954, are located to the left of
the entrance and those of Alessandro Serenelli are
preserved on the right. In the central altar, made
of white Carrara marble, near a wooden sculpture
of St Maria Goretti is a silver urn containing the
bone of the arm with which the Martyr attempted
to defend herself from her aggressor.

14 Church of Our Lady of Sorrows
The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and the adjoining former convent of the Benedictine nuns
were erected in the second half of the 16th century.
Today the church has a central layout with a dome
and lantern and is decorated with a rich, elegant
rococo style with three altars and four wooden
doors topped by canvases depicting Benedictine
saints. The larger altar contains the statue of the
dead Christ and our Lady of Sorrows, which are
taken out in the procession which takes place in the
streets of the city on the evening of Good Friday.
A valuable organ, created by Gaetano Antonio
Callido in 1766, is located in the wooden choir
above the entrance door.
14
current building dates back to the second half of
the 18th century, and preserves a valuable fresco
from the end of the 15th century, portraying St
Anna holding the Virgin on her knee, who is in
turn holding the blessed Child. The work can
perhaps be attributed to the brush of Francesco di
Gentile from Fabriano, who was active in that area
between the end of the 15th and the beginning
of the 16th century.

changes, but only simple maintenance works. The
façade is preceded by a colonnade and the interior
has a single nave with two chapels on the left. The
larger altar which divides the church from the choir
has a striking effect. The set of columns, capitals,
trabeations, frames, and elements depicting foliage
and shells is of large dimensions and in the centre
contains a Baptism of Christ by Ercole Ramazzani.
19 Church of St Mary of Mercy
17 Church of the Madonna dell’Incancellata and the rural churches
In Piazza San Pietro, St Peter’s Bell Tower stands
tall, the only relic of the church of St Peter which
was demolished there in 1870 as it was deemed
dangerous. A large Cedar of Lebanon stands majestic in its place. Legend has it that it was planted
there by an opponent of the clergy, so that it
would be impossible to build another religious
building on the site.
This is the church where St Maria Goretti went
to pray, especially in the month of May, and it
is dedicated to the Virgin. Built around a holy
aedicule depicting the Virgin feeding the Child, it
has always been a popular destination for pilgrims.
The building as it stands today dates back to the
end of the 1600s.

The house where Santa Maria Goretti
was born is located a short distance away
from the historical town centre: it is a
small country house, laid out on two
floors. On the ground floor, one of the
rooms still preserves elements of the
primitive cow shed, whereas the spot
where the wine cellar was located is now
a small chapel dedicated to the Saint. The
upper floor contains the kitchen, with a
fireplace in the middle of the room, and
the bedroom of Luigi Goretti and Assunta
Carlini: this was where “Marietta”, as the
family called her, was born on 16 October
1890. This room still contains many of the
original furniture that belonged to the
Goretti family, including the bed and the
painting that was hung above the bed.
32
Maria Goretti was born in Corinaldo on16 October 1890, into a
family of tenant farmers. She received the sacrament of baptism
in the Church of St Francis on 17 October 1890. Extremely devout, each day she walked a considerably long section of road
to reach the Church dell’Incancellata, where she went to pray.
In 1896, Luigi Goretti, the head of the family, Maria’s mother
Assunta and their six children followed the destiny of many
other families, and departed towards the Agro Pontino area, in
search of a better life. However, the work proved exhausting,
also for the women and children, and the family was deprived
of any kind of comfort. The Gorettis shared a house with the
Serenellis, another family from the Marche region. One hot day
in July, in the Ancient Farm of Ferriere di Conca, Marietta was
mortally wounded by Alessandro Serenelli who had wanted
to take advantage of her innocence. Maria died the following
day, forgiving her murderer. It was 6 July 1902. News of this
exceptional event travelled all over Italy and abroad. Maria’s
mother, Assunta, returns to Corinaldo and years later in a moving meeting, forgave her daughter’s killer. Maria was beatified
in St Peter’s on 27 April 1947 and canonised on 24 June 1950
by Pope Pius XII, to the delight of the large crowd present. Her
mother Assunta was present at this extraordinary event, the
only case in the history of the Church in which a parent has
witnessed the glorification of his or her child.

The rivers Nevola and Cesano flow through the land belonging to
Corinaldo, between rolling hills that slope gently down towards
the Adriatic sea,: visitors can stroll leisurely along their banks
and enjoy being in close contact with an almost uncontaminated
natural environment; in the Cesano Valley they can see the fluvial
forest, trunks belonging to the Pleistocene (50 thousand years ago),
which have come to light thanks to the erosion of the river. The
area also features grassy areas of particular naturalistic interest
and others with picnic equipment.

Entitled “Ancient Patregnani Mill – oil, wine and flour rooms”, the
exhibition is located in a historical building: a series of objects and
tools used daily to produce basic products including flour, oil and
wine are exhibited in the original areas that served as the area’s
main hub for these products for many years. Visitors can view
the millstones from the olive plant, which were still in use until
the 1990s and the much older millstones of the flour mill, which
probably date back to the Medieval. The location can be visited
by subscribing to the “Il Molino Racconta” association, which
manages the collection and organises its events. For information

Houses made of earth
Earth houses are typical examples of rural architecture in farming
areas. This construction technique, only used by the poorer social
classes, reappears in cycles corresponding with moments of economic crises and seems to have been imported by the Balkans via
the pilgrims who travelled to Loreto. There are various examples
of this kind of building in Corinaldo: the best preserved example
is located in Strada del Perino.

The Dispute of the Well of Polenta
This event is held every year in the third weekend in July, from late
afternoon until late at night. Archery contests, historical games and
the Palio delle contrade keep the medieval origins of Corinaldo alive,
while a historical procession makes its way through the streets of
the castle, featuring hundreds of participants proudly showing off
the extraordinary beauty of their 16th century costumes.
Halloween
Every year, on the run-up to All Saints’ Day, the historical centre of
Corinaldo lights up with a magical, fantastic atmosphere, featuring
witches, the tunnel of fear, torches and pumpkins. The event always
culminates with various firework displays at midnight on 31 October.
