FROM THE RABBI'S STUDY
RABBI BARRY BLOCK
Dear Friends:
Some folks incorrectly imagine
that they may safely speak
derisively about Christianity
around Rabbis.
They are
wrong. Nevertheless, at this
time of year, some unsuspecting
person will inevitably harangue
me about the allegedly Pagan
characteristics of Christmas. Whether made by a triumphalist Jew or by
a disaffected Christian, the claim will be that Christmas and a number
of its symbols were adopted from Pagan practice and are not nearly so
spiritually elevated and original as Jewish holy days and their symbols.
Invariably, my first response is to remind the person that many aspects
of Jewish celebration have Pagan origins. For example, Chanukah was
no doubt preceded by Pagan rites for the Winter Solstice. Very likely, the
kindling of lights in this darkest of months hearkens back to some preIsraelite attempt to distract the demons of the darkness.
Jews find deep religious messages in Chanukah, even though it is a relatively
minor holiday. Christians find even greater meaning in Christmas, one
of their most sacred celebrations. The possible Pagan origins of some of
the observances of either holiday are no longer relevant. Chanukah is a
religious observance. Christmas is a sacred Christian holy day.
Pagan threat to both holidays comes not from their histories, but from the
ways they are observed in popular culture. Today, the sacred meanings of
both holidays risk being lost, as spirituality vies with materialism for our
attention at this season. I cannot tell you how many people will tell me
that Christmas is an entirely secular, cultural, family celebration. What
that means is that families and communities gather, admittedly a sacred
endeavor in itself; but the activities in which they engage are primarily
gluttony and greed, which are Pagan endeavors, even in 2013.
Today, neither Jews nor Christians need worry that folks will bow down
to the Pagan gods of antiquity. Instead, we must be concerned with the
real idolatry of the 21st Century as expressed at this season. We perform
acts of kindness for one month, and then ignore the needy for the bulk of
the year. We shower our children with material goods, instead of our love
and attention. Captains of industry multiply their own earnings at the
expense of their workers, and then assuage their employees, who permit
themselves to be satisfied, with a lavish Christmas party.

Instead, this holiday season, let us all see the light of religious meaning
in our observance of Chanukah and in our neighbors’ celebration
of Christmas, whatever the origins of each particular symbol and
tradition. Let us keep the light burning, not just for eight days or for a
month, but throughout the year, every year. Let no idolatry dissuade
us from our religious mission, to bring light where there is darkness, at
this and every season. And may God be our Partner, shedding divine
light on a terribly dark world.

HOW SHOULD WE LIGHT
THE MENORAH DEBATE
Torah Study, led by Rabbi Block, at 9:30 am
Shabbat Service, led by Rabbi Block, at 11:00 am
Nobody and nothing can top last year's hilarious LatkeHamentaschen debate. Or can we? Rabbi Block and Russ Parish will
take up the challenge, starting where the Talmud left off (and trying
to top Rabbi Lipper and Scot Goldsholl in hilarity). Should we light
eight candles the first night of Chanukah, and decrease by one each
night, as Shammai suggested? Or should we stick with the current
practice initiated by Hillel, who lit one candle the first night and
increased by one each night?

President's Message
Dear Fellow Congregants,
I am excited to let you know that Janet Korenblat will be our
Congregation B’nai Israel honoree at the 11th Annual Jewish
Federation of Arkansas Jane B. Mendel Tikkun Olam Awards on
February 1, 2014. JFAR created the Jane Mendel Tikkun Olam awards
as a way to recognize individuals in congregations/organizations
from around our state that embody the spirit of Tikkun Olam/
Repairing the World. Janet is an exceptional leader and this award
is well deserved. Janet was the chair of our Interim Rabbi Search
Committee, the co-chair of our Rabbi Search Committee, since
1994 she has been the chair of our Caring and Sharing Committee,
as Administrative Vice President she serves on the House and
Grounds Committee, and previously has served on the Capital
Campaign Steering Committee, chaired our annual Fundraiser, cochaired Mitzvah Day, and taught Religious School! No job is too big
or too small for Janet. We are all very grateful for Janet’s dedication
to our congregation. Congratulations to our fellow congregant,
Judy Grundfest who will be honored with the Tikkun Olam Lifetime
Achievement Award! Judy has been selected to receive this award
in acknowledgment and appreciation of her lifetime of service and
generosity. Mazel Tov Judy from your Congregation B’nai Israel
family. There are a lot of things happening at Temple that I want to share
with you. In this article I will give you highlights, the next few
issues of the Chronicle will provide details. Thank you to all of the
volunteers that have agreed to lead these efforts. The Dues Review Committee chaired by Temple Treasurer Patrick
Ifrah is working hard to plan and execute a thorough review of
annual giving so that we can increase the financial pledges that offset
our operating expenses. TODA RABAH
Many thanks to our November volunteers:
Thank you to: Dale Ronnel for leading tours for visiting groups to
Temple during November, Andy Lawton for leading the Classical
Style Shabbat Service while Rabbi Block was out of town. Rita
Fagan, Jo Lawton, Jill Bauman, Debbie Brady, Ruth Fein, Sharon

Annabelle Tuck and Eugene Krupitsky are co-chairs of the new
Visioning Task Force that was suggested by Rabbi Larry Hoffman
when he visited our Temple this past spring. Annabelle and Eugene
will be working with Rabbi Block to speak with each of you about
what you want for and from our congregation as well as the gifts and
passions that you want to share. Jennifer Ronnel has agreed to chair our Religious School
Committee. This committee is charged with updating the existing
Religious School policies and procedures. While this committee
will work on the governance of the Religious School, the Religious
School Parents Committee, chaired by Amanda Ferguson will
continue to do the important work of supporting Ellyn Polsky and
the Religious School staff. Carmen Arick is working with the Staffing Task Force to
find viable long-term solutions for our Temple staff and
the roles and responsibilities of each staff member. Our
Interim Administrator, Shae Simoneau is doing a wonderful job
leading the staff during the office transition. We are all extremely
grateful to Shae for her leadership, hard work, sense of humor, and
calm demeanor.
I am looking forward to our annual Chanukah Dinner and Party.
Please join me on Wednesday, December 4 at 6 p.m. in the Social
Hall for a delicious traditional Chanukah dinner prepared with
love by Rita Fagan, Jo Lawton and friends. There will be games,
prizes, and crafts for the kids. Please RSVP to Elle at 225-9700 or

ATTENTION VETERANS AND
FAMILIES OF VETERANS!
On Friday night, December 6, 2013, our Men’s Club will be
conducting Armed Forces Shabbat. This service is being held
in conjunction with Pearl Harbor Day, but is meant to include
veterans of any period. We want to honor all veterans as well
as current Armed Forces. We would like for our Armed Forces
men and women, as well as veterans, to participate in the service. We are also working on a display-exhibit to honor our members’
service. If you or a member of your family has served in the U.S.
Armed Forces, please contact Glenn Block, 501-663-8388 or

LAFTY UPDATE
On November 22-24th, LaFTY welcomed 80 teens from Louisiana,
Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama to our congregation and we had
an amazing weekend! We enjoyed Shabbat with the congregation,
visiting Heifer International, programming, great food, and more
as we learned what the world would look like without social action
and how we as a national youth group could become more involved
with social justice.
We worked very hard
for months, and we are
extremely
grateful
to
the many parents and
volunteers who helped us
throughout the weekend.
The
weekend
would
not have been the same
without them! A special
thank you to Eugene
Krupitsky for helping with
programming, Rabbi Block
for helping with services,
Jan Alman for coordinating the delicious food and the volunteers,
Jane Levine for her guidance and design work, as well as the entire
temple staff, and many more parents and congregants. We sincerely
thank the host families who opened their homes to our friends for
the weekend and stayed up late to pick them up at night.
Her
generosity will help ensure the continued success of
Congregation B'nai Israel.
The whole weekend was fun, educational, and entertaining and
we are lucky to have such a supportive Temple and community to
help us welcome others from all over the south. We only get this
opportunity once every 4 years, and we are proud to share our home

Religious School Corner
The Religious School has a new weekly email newsletter and
it looks so fine! I want to thank Tracie Spivey for her design
and emailing assistance, and the teachers for their dedication
to keeping it current. Each week teachers write summaries of
classroom discussions and activities keeping parents updated
regarding teaching and learning in the classrooms. We believe
that informed parents will truly be our partners in the mission
of educating the congregation’s children to be strong Jewishly
committed adults who live Jewish lives and raise Jewish children
of their own.
The recently published Pew Research Center survey, “A Portrait
of Jewish Americans,” tells us that Reform Judaism continues
to be the largest Jewish denominational movement in the U.S.
with a full one third ( 35%) of all U.S. Jews identifying with
the movement. However, what is also important to note is
that 30% of Jewish people surveyed did not identify with any
denominational movement. It was reported that not only are
they less religious than Jews who identify with a movement, but
they are much less connected to Jewish organizations and they
are much less likely to be raising their children Jewish.
The congregation and the school have a big job to do. The
mission statement of the Religious School drives us to cultivate
in our students and families an “embrace (of) a lifelong
understanding and pursuit of Jewish identity, commitment and
values. The congregation strives to instill knowledge of pride in
Jewish heritage including Torah, tefillah (prayer), and mitzvoth
(commandments) leading to active participation in Jewish life.
In order to accomplish our goals we must continue to embrace
the “ It takes a village to raise a child” view. I believe that the
children in this congregation feel the community’s support
and nurturing while they are students because of the efforts of:
volunteers who spend a year preparing Bar/Bat Mitzvah students
for their important life cycle events; congregants who teach in
the Religious School, substitute in the classrooms, and share their
expertise in the chug programs; the many Sisterhood volunteers
who read to students during Jewish Book Month; and the teens
who wake up early on Sunday mornings to be role models of
Jewish involvement, among others.
Parents have a big job to do, too. Raising Jewish kids in small
Jewish communities isn’t easy; but always know that we in the
Religious School are here to be your partners in this important
endeavor!

RABBI HOWARD BERMAN TO
INTRODUCE UPB-SINAI
EDITION AT CONGREGATION
B’NAI ISRAEL
Rabbi Howard Berman, Executive Director
of the Society for Classical Reform Judaism,
will visit Congregation B’nai Israel on
Wednesday, January 29. The evening’s
activities will begin at 5:45 pm, with a
reception in the style of our Oneg Shabbat
before Shabbat services, followed by a
Shabbat service – admittedly, not on Shabbat
– at 6:15 pm, led by Rabbi Barry Block and
our Temple musicians. Rabbi Berman will
offer the sermon.
Rabbis Berman and Block will introduce the congregation to the
Union Prayer Book: Sinai Edition, which our Ritual Committee
is considering for adoption as our prayer book for our Classical
Reform worship twelve months of the year. “The Union Prayer
Book: Sinai Edition, was published in 2000 by Chicago Sinai
Congregation as a contemporary language, gender-neutral liturgy
for Reform congregations wishing to maintain the historic worship
traditions of our Movement’s heritage.”
All congregants are encouraged to attend, whether typically
preferring a Classical Reform style or not. Rabbi Block has led
services from this prayer book in his previous congregation and
did so when our Rabbinic Search Committee visited San Antonio
last December.
Rabbi Berman was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion in Cincinnati in 1974. He is Founding Rabbi
of Central Reform Temple in Boston and Rabbi Emeritus of
Chicago Sinai Congregation. Rabbi Berman is a highly soughtafter speaker on the continued viability and meaning of Classical
Reform Judaism in diverse, mainstream 21st Century Reform
congregations such as ours.
We are grateful to Temple Emanu-El in Dallas for lending us prayer
books for our trial service on January 29 and to the generous
donor who has offered to purchase them for our congregation’s
future. Congregants who have their own copies of the prayer book
are encouraged to bring them for the evening.

Wear your PJs and Bling. Drink a luscious cocktail to go with the fabulous
brunch. Enjoy girlfriends and chatting. The culinary magic begins at
the intersection of Silvana’s Argentinian flair with Meg’s California
sensibilities. Enjoy empanadas, quiches, scones, and baked gouda, along
with something fruity.
