19 February - Rosehill College
From the Principal Tena koutou katoa
We all enjoyed an excellent House Day on Tuesday, and thanks go to the Sports and
Physical Education Department for their organisation and running of the events.
Heads of Houses and teachers encouraged students to great efforts in the tabloid
sports and the athletics events. It was great to see so many students participating
with enthusiasm and house spirit. Well done to all!
KEY QUESTIONS FOR EACH
STUDENT TO ANSWER
Another highlight this week was the visit of Keven Mealamu with the Webb Ellis Cup. He spoke to
students at interval on Thursday about his career in rugby and spoke of seeking advice and help when
needed and of concentrating on the task at hand whether it be school work, sport or housework.
1.
Messages in Principal’s Assemblies this week have been about being proud of our school, and how we
have much to be proud of. Occasionally, a very small number of students may make bad choices and I
reinforced that the following are not OK:
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
What have been your academic
targets so far? Your achievements?
Your poor performances?
What are the achievement and
qualification goals that are important
for you this year?
What is your long-term career goal?
What ideas and comments do your
whanau have about your education
and future?
What ways of learning work best for
you in lessons and out of class?
Do you have programme and
assessment statements from all your
subjects?
What could be done to raise your
academic achievement? What
achievable actions are you therefore
now going to plan out?
Where will you keep a record
of academic conversations and
assessment results?
Students will enter answers for these
questions on Student Portal / Profile /
Interviews.

It’s not OK to be disrespectful to or verbally abuse a teacher.
It’s never OK to threaten or physically assault another person.
Certain things are banned at school – cigarettes and smoking, alcohol, drugs, synthetic drugs or
legal high substances, fireworks, weapons of any sort.
Any such actions will have serious consequences, and are likely to result in a stand down or suspension.
I also spoke of showing pride in ourselves by wearing the uniform correctly. Uniform is looking good at
this early stage of the year, but students were reminded about the correct socks, shoes and caps. See
later in the newsletter for the slides shown in assembly.

eLearning Update
As a result of research conducted by AUT University in 2015, the college
is implementing several Digital Parenting forums in 2016. The first of
these is planned for Tuesday the 1st of March at 6:30pm.
The topic of the evening - "Is my child safe? Healthy screen time" investigates the definition and types of screen time, how much screen
time is a part of our daily lives, and how we might ensure physical
safety and long-term health when using screens.
There are a limited number of spaces available because the format of
the evening has been planned to operate similar to a blended learning
environment. Adults are invited to attend with a student who brings
along their Chromebook. The intention is that adults will experience
how digital technologies can be integrated for learning in a bring-yourown-device classroom alongside their child.
If you are interested in attending this Digital Parenting forum with your
child, please email l.lamb@rosehillcollege.school.nz to secure a place.
•
Tell them to go to the nurse first before you
come to the school.
•
The nurse will assess the student
•
Then she will contact the parent/caregiver if
the student needs to go home.
We have systems in place to best manage this and the safety
of students can be compromised if they txt family instead of
following our procedures.
Your support in this would be much appreciated.
Samoan Group
Polyfest is just around the corner! If you would
like to be part of the parents forum for Rosehill’s
Samoan Group and help in any way eg: uniforms,

New Staff Profiles
Jessie French
Teacher of Physical Education & Health
“Do something everyday that frightens you”.
New challenges are always frightening and
leaving the comfort of Papatoetoe High
School to start my new venture here at
Rosehill College is exactly that. Terrifying,
yet exciting all at the same time.
Being a South Auckland girl I have grown up
socialising with, competing against and often
with Rosehillians. Whether that be in the water, on a rowing
boat, on the netball court, athletics track or at the gym. The
reputation that Rosehill has as a College is second to none
and I am over the moon to be joining the Health and Physical
Education Department in 2016.
After leaving school, I decided to travel the world to get away
from the voices telling me what I “should” do to find out what I
truly “wanted” to do, before starting a degree in a Bachelor of
Physical Education at Auckland University. I have a passion for
teaching in the outdoors and building relationships outside the
four walls of a classroom. It is my belief that it is not always
about winning or losing, or who is the fittest or the fastest,
but about building confidence and character in oneself as well
as each other.
Krista Maley
Teacher of English
I have come to Rosehill College as a
teacher in my second year. The first year
I spent teaching was at South Auckland
Middle School in Manurewa.
Prior to
this, I completed a Bachelor of Arts,
majoring in English and History at Massey
University in Palmerston North. I studied
extramurally from Thames where I live,
attending numerous contact courses and
block courses over the course of my studies.
I have enjoyed the experiences I have had while teaching so
far. I believe it will be an immensely rewarding career if the
past two years are anything to go by. Rosehill College seems to
me like a welcoming, vibrant and creative place and I couldn’t
think of three more favourable adjectives to describe a great
working environment. I am looking forward to working with the
students this year and inspiring as well as feeding a love of
history, literature and topical events that can provide a lifelong
journey as the learners’ personal stepping stones of interest
follow from each other and lead on to a broader world view.
NAMING GEAR
We get a lot of uniform and non-uniform items handed into the
Student Office – some are very expensive and
all too frequently a charity ends up benefiting as
students don’t collect them! Please ensure that
all items brought or worn to school are NAMED,
so that lost items can be returned to the rightful
owner.
House Day
Rugby World Cup Visit
House day went down an absolute treat on Tuesday as
the full school got to enjoy some friendly competition
during the house parades, novelty events and the
athletic events that took place in the afternoon.
The level of participation and house spirit that was
demonstrated throughout the day was fantastic to see
and we hope to see the same at swimming sports next Thursday. A huge
congratulations goes out to Manutaki house for winning for the 4th year
in a row! What an awesome achievement.
This Thursday Rosehill was lucky enough to have
a visit from Keven Mealamu, a legendary All Black
and the Rugby Webb Ellis Cup. It was an awesome
way to kick off the rugby season at Rosehill and
all of the students really enjoyed the question
and answer session that they had with Keven and
the spot prizes that went along with it. Some information about the
upcoming season was also passed out and any students that missed out
on this can come and collect the flyers from the Sports Office.
A big thank you goes out to all of the staff, sports committee and house
leaders that helped make the day run smoothly and especially to the
P.E staff who were out in the hot sun running the events and interacting
with the students all day! We couldn't do this without you.
Sign-ups for Counties Athletics will be held in the Sports Office from
Thursday 18th-22nd Feb. These sign ups are for competitive athletes
only or students that placed 1st and 2nd at House day.
Swimming Sports
Swimming sports is coming up next week on Thursday 25th! Students
will be able to sign up for either championship events (2 lengths) or nonchampionship events (1 length) with their house leaders in gym 1, starting
Thursday 18th lunchtime- Tuesday 23rd. Students will only be able to
do one or the other- championship OR non-championship and they will
have to participate in a minimum of 2 events. Due to the tight time frame
students will need to get in quickly to sign up!
Counties Athletics
Competitive athletes or 1st and 2nd place winners at house day need to
sign up for Counties Athletics in the Sports Office by Tuesday 23rd February
as entries will be closing soon.
Coaching/Managing/Transport Volunteers
Due to the nature of sport in schools we are always looking for parents or
family members who are interested and willing to volunteer some of their
time to help us either coach, manage or transport our sports teams. If this
is you or someone you know please contact Toni in the Sports Office or
phone on 295 0661 ext 844.
