Warranties: These natural components of our purchase process are always something that cause people to take pause and ponder: “Is the warranty long enough?” “Is the warranty period short because the item is reliable?” “Is it long because the company wants me to feel secure, or is it a subtle hint that I am in for some repairs in the long run?” “Should I but the extended warranty?” These are all issues we thing about, but suppose you had a new car in mind that had NO warranty? This was the case with some 2008 Shelby offerings. In that year, you could opt to purchase the stunning Shelby GT500KR with 540 ponies under the hood. If that was not enough, you could spring for the Super Snake version, flaunting 750 horsepower. However, to experience this advanced level of performance, the purchaser had to relinquish their right to any form of factory warranty; the price you pay for excellence. While the practice of giving five star performance in lieu of any damage protection may seem as modern as dealers offering rearview mirrors as an upgrade (but legally required) option, such practices were in place with early generation Shelbys as well. Take for instance the K-Code Mustang. Anyone wishing to own one had to accept that the car would was provided with a 3 month or 4,000 mile warranty as apposed to the 12 month/12,000 plan offered on standard Mustangs. The more things change, the more they stay the same. At least -Steve! in 1966 you got something!! 1 PONY EXPRESS ! ! AUGUST 2014 Presidents Letter August 2014 Hard to believe its August already, it seems like it was just January. Back to school comes way to fast. Which means more traffic in the mornings and the craziness of driving 280 and 85. ! I would like to mention the upcoming Nor Cal Shelby club Mini Nats event at Sonoma Raceway. 8/2 – 8/3 This is going to be a great event. Lots of guest speakers, Shelby car show and Parade laps. ! The VMOA has an upcoming event on Saturday 9th, Fun day Picnic in San Juan Batista. ! Also on the 30 the Santo Family car show in Alviso. ! Hope to see you at one of these events. ! Thank you Steve Chapman – President VMOA ! th PS I will not be at the August General meeting, I will be at Mini Nats for Open Track Driving. VMOA Members Chat Prior to Mystery Tour Kick-Off PONY EXPRESS AUGUST 2014 The Story Behind Neal Hasheider’s GT350 After owning a number of early Mustangs, I decided that a Shelby would be a great car to have. In 1989, I found a 1966 Shelby GT350 for sale by the owner of Mustang Mart; Blake DeLuca. It was a good deal, but the car was missing some parts that I would have to track down to make the car complete. The Shelby had an extensive auto-cross history and at one point in its life served as a test car for rear sway bar development for one of its previous owners. Knowing that the car would be a long-term project, I purchased the Shelby on 12/29/1989. ! I obtained some documents from SAAC regarding the history of 6S1749. It was sold new at Hayward Ford on 12/20/1966. The invoice showed the only option being the back seat. When I stripped the paint, there was no evidence of rally stripes on the car. It is also a radio delete. I tried tracking down the previous owners prior to DeLuca, but that proved fruitless. ! I drove the Shelby for two years before parking it because of an overheating problem. It could also be the way I drove it, as it went like hell and had a wild camshaft in the motor that made it rev like crazy. Upon inspection of the motor, when I tore it down, I discovered that the water passages were plugged with scale. Since I pulled the engine from the car, it led to a long period of storage. During that time, I acquired many of the parts I would need to put the car back to stock condition. Thankfully, I did most of my “shopping” then, since many of the special Shelby parts are not available today, or if you find them they are very expensive. ! In 2004, I took the car to a restorer friend, Armond D’Agastini, in UT. Since this type of restoration was a side-job for him at the time, it took three years for him to repair and paint the Shelby. Armond painted the Shelby with single stage Sikkens candyapple red. I got the Shelby back in 2007 and slowly started to put the car back together. I decided to assemble the car as close to concours as possible; within monetary reason. ! There is an axiom when completing a concours car; take your time to do it right. I can state that to be true. Also, you learn to ‘redo’ things to get it right. For example, I repainted many parts to get the right “gloss”. I also spent a lot time researching other cars and parts to make sure that I got it right the first time. ! Most of the ‘sub-assemblies’, were restored or refurbished years ago, so it was satisfying to finally install these pieces on the car. The rear seats are original and in very good condition, so they were left intact. One of the fun things I did was have Jesse Orasco install the headliner. He installed the original headliner in the Shelby at the Milpitas Ford Assembly Plant in 1966 while working there on the Mustang line. I can thank Tom Hasenberg for getting the engine and transmission installed. He also helped to get it fired up and running smoothly. ! In summary, restoring the Shelby has been both fun and frustrating. Because the Shelby was apart for so long, I ended up buying multiples of items because I either could not find it or PONY EXPRESS AUGUST 2014 forgot I had bought it. The most difficult task in assembling the Shelby was installing the rear quarter windows. I walked away from the car many times while doing this installation. And finally, don’t get rid of anything until the car is done!! ! Now I am ready to enjoy the car and show it. My long range plan is to show it (while it is still fresh and clean) and then drive it for pleasure. I will someday replace the four-speed with a five speed I already have in storage. ! -Neal Neal’s Shelby in 2014 PONY EXPRESS ! AUGUST 2014 Mustangs and Music and Picnic In the Vineyard Savannah Chanelle Has music in the vineyard on Saturdays. I am trying arrange to have VMOA display our Mustangs up by The Chateau while we Picnic Sip our wine and Listen to Sherri Austin On Saturday Sept, 6 from 6:00 to 8:00pm We should be up there around 5:00 pm to line up our Mustangs in the upper parking lot overlooking the vineyards. We can sit out on the lawn (they have chairs for the lawn) or on the patio at the tables and chairs under the umbrellas. Eat our picnics and sip our wine and listen to the music We can bring our food and any non-alcoholic beverage that we want. All wine must purchased there either by the glass or bottle. The normal cover charge is $10.00 per person. I am trying to get that waived. I am interested in finding out how many people would be interested in doing this event. We can either meet there or convoy as group to Savannah Chanelle. Let me know ASAP as time is getting short. Chuck Thuener cthuener@aol.com !
