And no wonder they win accolades. The 825 miles (1,327km) of beaches are a magnet for swimmers, divers and snorkellers and offer an array of activities including watersports, boat trips and fishing. And they are teeming with wildlife too — from snowbirds through to turtles. Barefoot Beach in Bonita Springs on the southwest coast flew the flag for Florida in Dr. Beach’s 2014 list, coming in at No. 2. Look for dolphins off the 1.5 miles (2.5 km) of sands and dunes and watch your step – they are home to the gopher turtle. Lots of shells, too. The nine miles (14km) of broad beach on St. George Island State Park, between Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, comes No. 3 on the latest list. Calm surf makes it perfect for swimming, canoeing and boating and anglers can fish for whiting, sea trout, flounder and other fish. Further down the west coast, the lovely beaches of DelnorWiggins Pass State Park in Naples, with its sand bar, and 4-6 Beaches_new.indd 4 PANAMA CITY BEACH Beach lovers are spoiled for choice in Florida, a holiday paradise blessed with sunkissed sands and crystalclear waters Cape Florida State Park Key Biscayne on the Atlantic coast are also included in Dr. Beach’s Top 10. Each park has its own special attractions. Dry Tortugas National Park in the Florida Keys for example, 70 miles (113 km) from Key West, is packed with marine life and birds. It can be reached only by chartered plane or a daily boat excursion as the 100-sq mile (161-sq km) park consists of open water with seven small islands. Snorkelling is one way to explore its corals and reef fish but visitors who prefer dry land will find nearly 300 species of birds swooping in and out, and possibly see the large sea turtles that come ashore to bury their eggs. And almost smack bang in the centre is the entertainment capital of Florida and theme park capital of the world, Orlando. So let’s start our tour of Central Florida here. The sheer scale and brilliance of the theme parks capture everyone’s imagination. Universal Orlando has opened a second area dedicated to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Diagon Alley, and just like the original Hogsmeade, it has extraordinary sets, rides, shops and special effects. Universal’s two parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, with thrill coasters and children’s themed areas, deserve a two-day visit, so families should try to stay at one of their hotels, which range from the new budget Cabana Bay Beach Resort to the plush Portofino Bay. Walt Disney World’s four parks, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, never fail to impress visitors – there’s a touch of magic 50-55 Central florida.indd 50 everywhere. To take advantage of dining offers and early admission into the parks, stay in one of their on-site hotels. Marine life shows are the highlight of SeaWorld, but it also heralds itself as a conservation centre. It has its roller coasters too – Manta is breathtaking – and don’t miss the colony of penguins in Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin. 1/13/15 11:57 AM Ce After exhausting hours in the parks, head to a waterpark such as Aquatica or Wet ‘n Wild to cool down For a complete contrast to all the parks, chill out at Discovery Cove. Swim with dolphins, coast down the lazy river and relax on a sandy beach. Only 1,000 people a day are allowed into this stunning oasis of tranquillity, so book ahead. Florida’s hot sunny days and balmy evenings allow holidaymakers to play by both day and night. So after exhausting hours in the parks, head to a waterpark such as Aquatica or Wet ‘n Wild to cool down before starting the evening entertainment. The parks have some of the best light and firework shows in the world every night, or head to Downtown Disney and Universal CityWalk – entertainment complexes with restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Airboats and gators Boggy Creek on Lake Toho at Southport Park offers airboat rides to skim over the wetland and spot gators and other Florida wildlife. There are numerous other ways to see wildlife in central Florida, from a hot air balloon or helicopter, by horseback or canoeing, kayaking, cycling or simply walking. Bird-watchers should not miss a trip to 140,000-acre (567 sq km) Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, a habitat for endangered species and stopover for migrating birds, at Kennedy Space Center on the Space Coast. Miami, the Everglades, Florida Keys or Lake Okeechobee? The answer is every one of these amazing places plus a whole lot more Starting in the north of the region, the 730-square mile (1,175-square km) Lake Okeechobee, or the Big O, is known as Florida’s inland sea, as it is the largest freshwater lake in the state and the second-largest in America. The lake is a magnet for fishing, boating and trails. Fishermen looking for its famous largemouth bass, crappie and bluegill should head for Clewiston on the southern shore. From here, visitors can also take to the 110-mile (177 km) Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail. Be sure to have binoculars handy, for hikers and bikers on the 35ft-high (10m) dyke overlooking the Big O may spot wild hogs, osprey, kites, deer, alligators and other fascinating creatures. It is a leader in culture, the arts, entertainment, finance and commerce. The Port of Miami is known as the Cruise Capital of the World and South Beach is the hub of everything that is cool! Allow several days to make the most of Miami. There are countless hotels and motels to suit every budget, bed and breakfast stopovers, campgrounds and resorts. Colourful festivals are part of city life. Calle Ocho is the largest street festival in Miami, held between February and March, and is a celebration of Latin life on the streets of Little Havana. Dance, music, street performers and home-cooked food are part of 1/13/15 03:22 PM 23/12/2014 09:35:16 So the fun, but then Little Havana is alive with social and cultural activity every day. The Taste of the Grove Food and Wine Festival is held in April in Coconut Grove and the Food Network South Beach Wine and Food Festival takes place over four days in February. The Arsht Center in downtown Miami is the state’s largest performing arts venue and stages world-class ballet, opera and music such as classical, jazz, blues and flamenco. Shopping is a special experience in Miami. Aventura Mall lists 300 speciality stores, including the world-famous Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s. Dadeland Mall near South Miami boasts the largest Macy’s in Florida, Bal Harbour Shops hold frequent fashion events and Dolphin Mall includes a Calvin Klein Factory Outlet. South Beach is a hotspot day or night, but really comes into its own when the sun goes down. The Art Deco buildings have become a world-famous statement of the area and clubs like Mansion, Mango’s Tropical Café and the Blues Bar at the National Hotel attract everyone looking for an exciting evening. White sands of South Beach During the day, chill out on South Beach's white sands, head for fashion-hotspot streets such as Lincoln Road or stroll Ocean Drive, known for its Art Deco hotels and Versace mansion. The city is a mecca for sports fans. The top four professional teams include Miami Dolphins in the National Football League, Miami Heat (basketball), Miami Marlins (baseball) and Florida Panthers (ice hockey). It is also home to college sports teams. The NASCAR Ford Championship Weekend at the Homestead-Miami South Beach is a hotspot day or night but really comes into its own when the sun goes down. Any traveller without a machinereadable or biometric passport is required to obtain a visa before travelling to the U.S. A machine-readable passport can generally be identified by the presence of two lines of computer code printed at the bottom of the biographical page. (Generally, the only UK passports NOT machine-readable are the old-style blue passports or passports issued overseas.) Further changes regarding passport requirements came into effect in 2005 and 2006. In brief, machine-readable passports issued before 26 October 2005 – no further requirements. Machine-readable passports issued between 26 October 2005 and 25 October 2006 – require a digital photograph printed on the data page or integrated chip with information from the data page. Machine-readable passports issued on or after 26 October 2006 – require integrated chip with information from the data page (known as biometric or e-passports). Citizens of Chile, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Slovakia and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) must have biometric passports regardless of when they were issued. Detailed information, including a step by step guide to determine your eligibility for the Visa Waiver Program is available on the U.S. Embassy’s website at: http://London.usembassy.gov. Visas: Most citizens of 38 eligible countries, including the United Kingdom, travelling on national passports for business or tourism for 90 days or less, are eligible to travel visa free under the Visa Waiver Program provided they meet certain conditions. A passport indicating that the bearer is a British Subject, British Dependent Territories Overseas Citizen, British National (Overseas) Citizen or a British Protected Person does not qualify for visa free travel. Bearers of such passports are not eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program and must obtain a 62-66 General info Dec 30.indd 62 visa before they travel to the U.S. A British passport must quote the holder’s nationality as British Citizen and nothing else in order to qualify for visa free travel. ESTA International travellers who are seeking to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are subject to enhanced security requirements and are required to register in the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA). ESTA applies only to those VWP travellers entering the United States by air or sea. Travellers entering by land either from Canada or Mexico are not required to register before travelling. If your ESTA registration is successful, it will be valid for multiple U.S. entries for two years or the date your passport expires, whichever comes first. Before going on line to register, you should ensure that you are qualified to travel under the Visa Waiver Program otherwise your registration will be rejected. ESTA also does not guarantee entry into the United States; that decision rests with the immigration official at the Port of Entry in the same way that travellers currently entering the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program or with a visa are subject to inspection. Again full details about ESTA and the registration process can be found on the Embassy’s website. Travellers requiring visas, such as those travelling on one-way tickets, staying for longer than 90 days, those who have been convicted or arrested for any offence in the past or those who have previously been refused entry or deported from the U.S., should ensure that they apply for the visa well in advance of the planned departure to the United States and that they do not make final travel plans until the visa has been issued and they are in receipt of their passport. Most persons requiring a visa will be required to attend an interview at the U.S. Embassy. Information on applying for a visa is available from the Embassy’s website. You are strongly recommended to check with the Embassy concerning your eligibility to travel visa free before purchasing your tickets. Conditions relating to visa free travel are available from the Embassy’s website at http://london.usembassy.gov The visa application form and instructions on the payment of the visa application fee may be obtained from the website. If travelling under the Visa Waiver Program, the passport must be valid for at least 90 days from the date on which the holder enters the U.S. If not, the holder will be admitted until the expiration date on the passport. Passport holders from Brunei must possess a passport valid for at least six months from the date of departure from the U.S. even if travelling visa free under the Visa Waiver Program. Before departure: Stateside visitors must now book their first night’s accommodation before they arrive in the country. Arriving visitors have to provide an accurate address and it is not acceptable to show ‘touring’ if on a fly-drive holiday, or ‘staying with relatives’. Additionally, this same information will also need to be in the airline booking system when the aircraft departs the UK and will be sent, ahead of arrival, to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials at the destination airport. The I-94 is now automated for those entering by air or sea carrier. This is in addition to information already required, such as passport number, country of issue, expiry date, given names (as they appear on the passport), last name, gender, date of birth and nationality. The I-94W is still required to be completed at land ports of entry and this carries a $6 fee. Arrival in the United States: Most non-U.S. citizen travellers to the U.S., from 14-79 years old, are required to enroll in the US-VISIT programme and have their index fingerprints digitally scanned and their photograph taken upon entering the United States. No ink is used. US-VISIT is an EntryExit system designed to enhance control of U.S. borders and more effectively enforce U.S. immigration law. This entry procedure adds only 10-15 seconds to the entry screening process. The US Government no longer issues indefinite visas. If you currently hold a visa, please check with the Embassy’s website. Check Before You Go: U.S. immigration regulations and procedures are subject to change at short notice so please check before travelling. Therefore, even if you have travelled to the U.S. previously for a similar purpose, you may find that you are now subject to additional requirements when applying for a visa. Before planning a trip it is imperative that you ensure that you are correctly documented for travel. Check the Embassy’s website before making final travel plans to avoid any inconvenience and delay. Further information is available from http:// London.usembassy.org.uk. Advance Travel Authorisation—ESTA— Effective 12 January 2009, Visa Waiver Program (VWP) travellers are required to obtain an advance travel authorisation prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the U.S. This travel authorisation can be obtained by submitting an application online through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) at https://esta.cbp.dhs. gov. ESTA applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel, although it is recommended that applications be submitted no less than 72 hours in advance of travel. Within seconds in most cases, the traveller will receive one of the following responses: 1. Authorisation Approved: Travel authorised. 2. Travel Not Authorised: Traveller must obtain a non-immigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate before travelling to the U.S. 3. Authorisation Pending: Traveller will need to check the ESTA web site for updates within 72 hours to receive a final response. An approved travel authorisation made via ESTA is: • Required for all VWP travellers prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the U.S. • Valid, unless revoked, for up to two years or until the traveller’s passport expires, whichever comes first. • Valid for multiple entries into the U.S. •N ot a guarantee of admissibility to the U.S. at a port of entry. Note that ESTA approval only authorises a traveller to board 62-66 General info Dec 30.indd 64 efu 64 l informati on a carrier for travel to the U.S. under the VWP (For additional information, please visit ”For International Visitors” at www.cbp. gov/travel). ESTA is designed to enhance the security of the VWP and enable the U.S. to maintain and expand programme participation. An approved ESTA requires a fee payment of $14. Travellers may pay the fees directly through the ESTA website with major credit and debit cards. The fee is comprised of a $4 fee to recover the costs incurred by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for the continued operation and maintenance of the ESTA system and a $10 travel promotion fee established by the Travel Promotion Act (TPA) of 2009. Customs U.S. Customs Regulations Personal Exemptions: The following items may be brought in free of duty and internal revenue tax provided they are for personal use only, and not for anyone else, or for re-sale. • Personal effects (e.g. wearing apparel; articles of personal adornment; toiletries; photographic equipment). • One litre of alcoholic beverages (e.g. wine, beer or liquor) if you are an adult non-resident over 21 years of age. Also, alcoholic beverages may only be carried on flights if purchased in the duty-free area • 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigars, or three pounds of smoking tobacco, or proportionate amounts of each. Currency Regulations: There is no set limit on the amount of money (U.S. or foreign currency), travellers cheques or money orders, that you may bring in, or take out of the United States. However, a report must be filed with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the time you arrive or depart if you possess an amount that exceeds $10,000 or the equivalent in foreign currency. A form for this purpose will be provided at port of entry. Gift Exemption: A non-resident may claim, as free of duty and internal revenue tax, articles up to $100 in value as long as these gifts are intended for other people. You also have to remain in the United States for at least 72 hours, and the gifts must be with you at all times. This $100 gift exemption, or any part of it, can be claimed only once every six months. You may include 100 cigars within the gift exemption. Articles should not be gift wrapped, as they must be available for inspection. If you are not entitled to the $100 gift exemption, you may bring in, free of duty, articles up to $25 in value for either personal or household use. Neither the $100 gift exemption nor the $25 exemption may be grouped together for members of a family. It should be noted that a limit is imposed by some U.S. states on the amount of alcohol that can be taken in. Customs cannot release alcoholic beverages above the limit as laid down by the state in which you arrive. Helpful Information Passports/Visas/Esta: A minimum of one empty page is recommended in passports for travel to the US. All travellers intending to visit the US without a visa under the terms of the Visa Waiver Program are required to have an individual machine-readable or biometric passport. A machine-readable passport can generally be identified by the presence of two lines of computer code at the bottom of the biographical page. International travellers seeking to travel to the US under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are subject to enhanced security requirements and are required to register in the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA). First Night: Stateside visitors must now book their first night’s accommodation before they arrive in the country. Driving: A full UK driver's license is required. Electricity: 110/120 volts AC, 60 cycles. Flat, two-pin plugs are used. Dates: Dates are written starting with month, then day and year. For example, December 25 2015 is written in the US as 12. 25.15, not 25.12.15. Shopping And Taxes: Electrical goods bought in the United States may not work correctly in the UK, even when used with a transformer. The United States uses the NTSC broadcast system which applies to items such as pre-recorded video tapes and video camcorders, etc, not the PAL system used in the UK. Please ensure that your home equipment is compatible with such items. For prerecorded DVDs, the USA is in Region 1 whereas the UK is in Region 2. Again, check if your DVD equipment at home is compatible. With a few exceptions, it is not normally possible to claim back local and state taxes paid in the USA. Hotels in some destinations may charge an occupancy tax in addition to city, state and federal taxes on beds. Car 1/13/15 04:07 PM Us rental companies may also do the same in some areas. Taxes on petrol, cigarettes and alcohol are built into the final price. Insurance: There is no agreement between the US and the UK for medical or hospital care. There is no equivalent to the National Health Service and medical expenses are very high. Medical insurance is strongly urged, with the suggested coverage being a minimum of £1,000,000. Anyone renting a car is also urged to take out comprehensive insurance as litigation claims are common in the US and payments are high. Brochures available from the US Embassy • Customs regulations for nonresidents • Travellers’ Tips on bringing Food, Plant and Animal Products into the United States • Importing a car. For further information, please contact Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Embassy, 24 Grosvenor Square, London W1A 1AE or visit http:// efu 65 l informati on london.usembassy.gov/ukcustom.html Money: All major credit cards are accepted throughout the US. When hiring a car or booking into a hotel, an amount will be put on to the credit card to cover all or some of the costs. Travellers’ cheques in US dollars are recommended. If these are carried, they will be accepted as cash in most restaurants, hotels and shops. It is recommended to arrive in the US with about $100 in cash, including one dollar bills for tipping and paying taxis. ATMs are plentiful but will usually charge for withdrawals. Tipping: As at home, tipping is a common and expected practice. Suggested tips are: 15 – 20 per cent of the bill for meals in restaurants and the same to taxi drivers. About $2/3 per bag or suitcase carried by bellboys or porters at hotels or airports is the norm. If going on an escorted tour, check beforehand whether tips are included. If not, the tour guide and others will expect a tip. Disabled Travellers: Disabled motorists can often get parking permits.
