Beaches
Sun, sea
Every year the state’s beautiful
beaches feature in America’s
Top 10 chosen by environmental
professor Stephen Leatherman,
nicknamed Dr. Beach. And no
wonder they win accolades.
The 825 miles (1,327km)
of beaches are a magnet for
swimmers, divers and snorkellers
and offer an array of activities
including watersports, boat trips
and fishing.
And they are teeming with
wildlife too — from snowbirds
through to turtles.
Barefoot Beach in Bonita
Springs on the southwest coast
flew the flag for Florida in Dr.
Beach’s 2014 list, coming in at
No. 2. Look for dolphins off the
1.5 miles (2.5 km) of sands and
dunes and watch your step – they
are home to the gopher turtle.
Lots of shells, too.
The nine miles (14km) of broad
beach on St. George Island State
Park, between Apalachicola Bay
and the Gulf of Mexico, comes
No. 3 on the latest list.
Calm surf makes it perfect for
swimming, canoeing and boating
and anglers can fish for whiting,
sea trout, flounder and other fish.
Further down the west coast,
the lovely beaches of DelnorWiggins Pass State Park in
Naples, with its sand bar, and

There’s no better

Let’s start with the 825 miles

There are various opportunities
to swim with the adorable
dolphins, including Discovery

Miami or Gulf World Marine Park
at Panama City Beach.
Every area of Florida has an
aquarium or zoo and in many, such
as Lion Country Safari in Palm

Most families will want to
experience Florida’s amazing
theme parks at least once and
there is one to suit everyone –

Wild and wonderful
Florida is one huge
wildlife park, full of
amazing land and sea
creatures, more than 500
native species of birds
and stunning flowers and
fauna wherever you go
The state has three national
parks, three national forests and
many state parks and national
wildlife refuges.
Each park has its own special
attractions. Dry Tortugas
National Park in the Florida
Keys for example, 70 miles (113
km) from Key West, is packed
with marine life and birds. It can
be reached only by chartered
plane or a daily boat excursion
as the 100-sq mile (161-sq km)
park consists of open water with
seven small islands.
Snorkelling is one way to
explore its corals and reef fish
but visitors who prefer dry land
will find nearly 300 species of
birds swooping in and out, and
possibly see the large sea turtles
that come ashore to
bury their eggs.

The astonishing Everglades
National Park, a World Heritage
site, stretches over 1.5 million
acres of South Florida and can
be explored by airboat, tram
tour, cycling, kayaking or
trail walking.
It is home to many
remarkable creatures
including crocodiles,
alligators and tree frogs,
and you may even spot one
of the Florida panthers that
live in the drier parts of the
Everglades. Within mangroves
are nearly 300
species of
fish, crab and
crayfish, as
well as many
species of
reptiles and
amphibians.
With binoculars at the ready,
hit the self-guided Great Florida
Birding Trail, which runs for 2,000
miles (3,218km) and includes 515
special bird-watching sites.
The third national park is
Biscayne, south of Miami, which
is 95 percent water and where
adventurous visitors can enjoy
some of the best diving and
snorkelling in the world.
They may also spot the
fascinating manatee, found in
shallow, slow-moving rivers.
Other places to spot these
gentle herbivores include Merritt
Island National Wildlife Refuge in
Titusville, Three Sisters Springs
The Everglades National Park (top) covers

There is no better destination
than Florida to get married, have
a civil ceremony, renew vows or
enjoy a glorious honeymoon.
Ceremonies can be arranged on
a white sandy beach or in a lush,

guests as you wish.
If you’re looking for something

A licence can be applied for in

around $95 (£60). The licence is
valid for 60 days from the date of

Monday to Friday only so make

A good place to start is the

Double the fun
Florida is such a fabulous destination that holidaymakers
are spoiled for choice and want to experience as much as
possible. A two-centre holiday is the perfect answer
Don't miss...
Taking a Caribbean cruise,
sailing from one of Florida’s
many ports, before or after
a city or beach break.
When booking your
twin-centre holiday,
thinking about flying into
one airport and jetting
home from another.
If travelling between
holiday resorts by hire
car, you can pick up and
drop off the vehicle at
different destinations.
Many visitors to Florida take a
two-centre break to ensure they fit
everything in. Even if the resorts
are miles apart, it’s easy to do,
even if spending ONLY a week or
two in the Sunshine State.
Hiring a car frees you up to move
from one place to another. All the
main rental companies are based
at major airports or near hotels.
But public transport also is
an option – internal flights, by
rail with Amtrak, or Greyhound
buses, which serve more than 54
destinations in Florida.
The majority of first-time visitors to
Florida, especially families, want to
see Mickey and Co., so Orlando is a

favourite two-centre option. The
thrills and spills of Walt Disney

just too great to resist.
Stay in one of the park hotels
(you get early park admission) or
a self-catering villa with pool in
nearby Kissimmee.
Dinner shows, airboat rides
to see alligators, balloon trips,
museums and shopping malls are
all on the doorstep.
As for your second choice,
the world of Florida is
your oyster. If you’re
exhausted after fun-filled
days in the parks and
want to hit a beach
quickly, the Space
Coast is less than an
hour’s drive.
Combining a shopping
trip and staying near one

Locals tell visitors North Florida is the way the Sunshine State used
to be…miles and miles of unspoiled beaches, friendly residents, a
naturalist’s dream and a sporting paradise
Nothing has changed here. This
region has the same pristine
beaches and friendly welcome
it has always had, plus nature at
its most stunning, and top-class
sport – with just a bit more
excitement in the cities.
Tucked away in the northeast,
on the banks of the beautiful St.
Johns River, is Jacksonville, the
'River City by the Sea'.
Jacksonville is the prime
example of how a city can
combine a big business hub with
wonderful attractions for tourists.
It is a major military and civilian
deep-water port with a huge
diversity of culture, museums,
sports venues and shopping
centres, but also offers 22 miles
of wide sand beaches and one of
the largest urban park systems
in America spread over some
80,000 acres.
There are 10 state and national
parks as well as many city parks
in Jacksonville. Just minutes from
the city centre are wetlands,
44-49 North florida.indd 44
marshes and untouched
woodlands for campers, hikers
and cyclists to explore.
Go fishing, canoeing and
kayaking or bird watching.
Jacksonville is placed at the
northeast gateway to The Great
Florida Birding Trail and there are
hundreds of species to spot.
Downtown Jacksonville is
bursting with super shopping
options, great dining
experiences, historic buildings
and museums. The Cummer
Museum of Art and Gardens
on Riverside Avenue has nearly
5,000 works and is a renowned
centre for education in the arts
for adults and children.
The Jacksonville Jazz Festival is
held annually over Memorial Day
weekend and the Springing the
Blues Festival swings along over
three days in April.
Just 45 minutes north of the city
by car, at the tip of the Florida
border, are Amelia Island and
Fernandina Beach, known as the
Isle of Eight Flags because of its
multiple countries of occupation
since 1562.
People travel hundreds of miles
to the annual Isle of Eight Flags

more besides, including a film

With accommodation to suit
every budget and pristine sands
to stroll along, it is no wonder
Amelia Island was named as a Top
25 Island in the World to visit in
2013 in the Conde Nast Readers’
Choice Awards.
Ponte Vedra Beach
South of Jacksonville lies Ponte
Vedra Beach, a name familiar to
golf fans as it is the venue of the
annual Players Championship at
TPC Sawgrass with its formidable
17th-hole island green.
But there’s more to Ponte
Vedra Beach than golf. Giant
sand dunes and white beaches,
natural wonders to explore, classy
shopping and delicious dining
experiences make it a family
destination to savour.
Quaint St. Augustine, just
down the Atlantic coast from
the border, is America’s oldest
city with centuries-old buildings,
including the 17th Century military
fort Castillo de San Marcos, vying

for attention alongside modern
hotels, shops and animal reserves.
There are many living history
attractions and children will love
pretending to be a pirate invading
the city or digging through a
reconstructed archeological site.
St. Augustine’s beaches,
including Crescent Beach, Vilano
Beach and St. Augustine Beach,
make up miles of beautiful
coastline. Anastasia State Park
is a protected bird sanctuary
with some superb beaches and
it includes nature trails, fishing,
camping and canoeing.
Palm Coast is another paradise
for nature lovers, and eco-tours by
boat or land transport are a great
way to explore the area. Keep an
eye open for playful dolphins and
gentle manatees.
Chill-out zone
Next door, Flagler Beach is an
excellent base for fishermen or
visitors who just want to chill out
on miles of uncrowded beaches.
Moving inland, Crescent City is a
small, rural town nestling between
two lakes, Lake Stella and
Crescent Lake. At the north end
of Crescent Lake is Dunns Creek

days and includes a parade as well
as an arts and crafts show.

Gainesville is Paynes Prairie
Preserve State Park, spread over
22,000 acres and a dream for

To the north of Gainesville are
many welcoming towns with their
special attractions, including High

Lake City was originally a
Seminole Indian village. Just 13
miles (21km) east is the Olustee

site of what was Florida’s largest
battle in the Civil War and where
February each year sees the
fighting re-enacted.

Spirit of Suwannee Music Park
and Campground, a one of a
kind venue that hosts all sorts of
musical events throughout the
year and includes 500-plus acres
of grounds for campers, hikers and
many outdoor pursuits.
Tallahassee is the capital city of
Florida and famous for its warm
Southern hospitality – it's just
across the border from Georgia
– and is also home to two
universities, Florida State and
Florida A&M. FSU’s Seminoles and
Florida’s Gators have won three of
the past national championships in
college football.
The city offers everything a
visitor could want: wonderful arts
and culture, fascinating museums,
top-class shopping, sports, the
great outdoor activities and a
buzzing nightlife area.
The area has a proud record in

Tallahassee’s newest attraction
is also one of its oldest, Cascades

would meet up. Now it has reemerged as a gathering point
for locals and visitors with family
relaxation areas, fitness trails and
at its centrepiece an amphitheatre,
home to theatrical and musical
works as well as to lots of
community events.
At the very western point of
Florida lies the city of Pensacola,
nicknamed The City of Five Flags
after the governments that have
ruled there over a 450-year history.
Today, Pensacola is a vibrant,
attractive city where live music
fills the air and fine galleries and
museums beckon visitors. Fine
dining is a must as Pensacola
is home to several nationallyrenowned chefs.
Indeed the whole Pensacola Bay
area is packed with adventurous
activity, including scuba diving to
the world’s largest artificial reef,
fishing, bird watching and relaxing
on miles of beautiful beaches.
One adrenaline-packed way
of exploring the scenery is a

is a naturalist’s dream with several
renowned parks, including Big

Key State Park, as well as some
other discovery trails and wetland
eco trails.
The spectacular Emerald Coast
of North Florida is bristling
with the most delightful resorts
and white sand beaches found
anywhere in the world.
At its heart are Destin, Fort
Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island
where families can join dolphinwatching cruises, splash around
at the Big Kahuna's Water and

of Florida. Sandy trails, long bike

Home to Harry Potter and Mickey Mouse, it’s no wonder
Central Florida gets lots of attention, but the priceless characters
are only two of the many magical attractions for holidaymakers
From Crystal River to Bradenton
on the Gulf coast and from
Ormond Beach to Vero Beach
on the Atlantic, there’s non-stop
fun and fantastic sights and
activities to be discovered in this
magnificent middle chunk of the
Sunshine State.
And almost smack bang in the
centre is the entertainment capital
of Florida and theme park capital
of the world, Orlando.
So let’s start our tour of Central
Florida here. The sheer scale
and brilliance of the theme parks
capture everyone’s imagination.
Universal Orlando has opened
a second area dedicated to
the Wizarding World of Harry
Potter, Diagon Alley, and just like
the original Hogsmeade, it has
extraordinary sets, rides, shops
and special effects.
Universal’s two parks, Universal
Studios and Islands of Adventure,
with thrill coasters and children’s
themed areas, deserve a two-day
visit, so families should try to stay
at one of their hotels, which range
from the new budget Cabana
Bay Beach Resort to the plush
Portofino Bay.
Walt Disney World’s four
parks, Animal Kingdom, Epcot,
Magic Kingdom and Hollywood
Studios, never fail to impress
visitors – there’s a touch of magic
50-55 Central florida.indd 50
everywhere. To take advantage of
dining offers and early admission
into the parks, stay in one of their
on-site hotels.
Marine life shows are the
highlight of SeaWorld, but it also
heralds itself as a conservation
centre. It has its roller coasters
too – Manta is breathtaking – and
don’t miss the colony of penguins
in Antarctica: Empire of the
Penguin.

After exhausting
hours in the parks,
head to a waterpark
such as Aquatica
or Wet ‘n Wild to
cool down
For a complete contrast to all the
parks, chill out at Discovery Cove.
Swim with dolphins, coast down
the lazy river and relax on a sandy
beach. Only 1,000 people a day
are allowed into this stunning oasis
of tranquillity, so book ahead.
Florida’s hot sunny days
and balmy evenings allow
holidaymakers to play by both day
and night.
So after exhausting hours in the
parks, head to a waterpark such
as Aquatica or Wet ‘n Wild to cool
down before starting the evening
entertainment.
The parks have some of the
best light and firework shows in
the world every night, or head to
Downtown Disney and Universal
CityWalk – entertainment
complexes with restaurants, bars
and nightclubs.
There are so many attractions to
see in and around Orlando that
one visit to central Florida is never
enough. Ripley’s Believe It Or Not

houses oddities like you’ve never
seen before and Titanic – The

Then, there are the famous
alligators to be seen but
definitely not touched. Gatorland
on South Orange Blossom Trail
is the place to learn all about
these toothy creatures and view
them safely from a three-storey
observation tower.
Airboats and gators
Boggy Creek on Lake Toho at
Southport Park offers airboat rides
to skim over the wetland and spot
gators and other Florida wildlife.
There are numerous other
ways to see wildlife in central
Florida, from a hot air balloon
or helicopter, by horseback or
canoeing, kayaking, cycling or
simply walking.
Bird-watchers should not miss
a trip to 140,000-acre (567 sq
km) Merritt Island National
Wildlife Refuge, a habitat
for endangered species
and stopover for migrating
birds, at Kennedy Space
Center on the Space Coast.
See manatees, fish and
go boating or hiking on
six trails from just a mile
(1.6km) to five miles (8km).
The space centre itself, a
fascinating insight into the world
of an astronaut, attracts more than
1.5 million visitors a year.
Canaveral is one of 10 national
seashores in the country, the
57,000 acres (231sq km)protected
by the National Park Service. The
beach is a nesting ground for
three species of sea turtles and
the main entrance to the park is
at Apollo Beach, south of New
Smyrna Beach.
Further north on Central
Florida’s Atlantic coast, Daytona
Beach has the tallest lighthouse
in Florida, the Ponce de Leon
Inlet light, and the boardwalk and
pier are where to go for fun and
food. Go on the roller coaster
and Ferris wheel before pizzas
and ice cream.
There are watersports galore

Accommodation from hotels
to condominiums hugging the
beach is plentiful so, if touring, it
is easy to find somewhere to eat,

Moving south from Canaveral,
Cocoa Beach is a lively hub
for surfers looking for some of
the best waves in Florida. Visit
Ron Jon’s – the world’s largest
surf shop – and Cocoa Village,
a riverside complex with more
than 50 shops, galleries and
artists’ studios.
It’s more peaceful and there’s
a slightly older clientele in
Melbourne, about half an hour
further south. Crane Creek

couple of the highlights.
For even more peace, Sebastian

making it one of the oldest tracks
in America.

Old Florida history in its museums
and parks, yet is a modern city
with a bustling downtown and
working artists’ community –

St. Petersburg also offers
galleries, boutiques, arts
and music venues as well as
restaurants and nightclubs. The

Like so many of Florida’s

All these coastal resorts are
close to Tampa, which many
holidaymakers use as a base
because of its airport and port. It
is a holiday destination in itself,
not only because of the nearby
stunning beaches, but because
it is packed with museums,
galleries, shops and is home to
the National Football League’s
Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Ybor City is Tampa’s trendiest
neighbourhood for nightlife
and dining, and a 19th century
historic district reflects the
Cuban/Spanish heritage. Roll
your own cigar at one of many
factories in America’s cigar
capital of the world and get in
the mood for a fun-filled evening.
Youngsters will love Tampa’s
aquarium, waterpark, children’s

which has more than 2,000 animals
including elephants, leopards,
tigers and cheetahs.

Where do you imagine you get a true taste of South Florida?
Miami, the Everglades, Florida Keys or Lake Okeechobee? The
answer is every one of these amazing places plus a whole lot more
Starting in the north of the
region, the 730-square mile
(1,175-square km) Lake
Okeechobee, or the Big O, is
known as Florida’s inland sea, as
it is the largest freshwater lake in
the state and the second-largest
in America.
The lake is a magnet for fishing,
boating and trails. Fishermen
looking for its famous largemouth
bass, crappie and bluegill should
head for Clewiston on the
southern shore.
From here, visitors can also take
to the 110-mile (177 km) Lake
Okeechobee Scenic Trail. Be sure
to have binoculars handy, for
hikers and bikers on the 35ft-high
(10m) dyke overlooking the Big
O may spot wild hogs, osprey,
kites, deer, alligators and other
fascinating creatures.
From the Big O, visitors are
torn between moving west to
Sarasota or east to Palm Beach.
So why not do both?
Sarasota County includes

romantic-sounding attractions
such as Siesta Key, Longboat
Key and Venice. Besides its
world-famous beaches, it is also
a cultural hotspot renowned for
its arts, galleries, museums, and
ballet and opera companies.
Sarasota Opera, Orchestra
and Ballet are just three of the
cultural attractions bringing
pleasure every year to thousands
in the city. Visitors also flock to
the Sarasota Music Festival in
June and the Sarasota Blues Fest
in September.
Nearby Longboat Key, divided
between Sarasota and Manatee
counties, has 12 miles (19km) of
white beaches, a championship
golf course and many great
dining experiences.
And just down the coast, the
cool, white, powdery sands of
Siesta Key Beach have been
voted the best in America. Some

are the best in the world!
Venice prides itself as a more
non-commercial city than its
neighbours and has the unusual

the Shark’s Tooth Capital of

Fort Myers has a diverse set of
attractions. As well as glorious

Naples is a centre of cultural
pleasures as well as classy clothes
boutiques and fine dining.
Farther down the coast is Marco

laid-back lifestyle.
Returning to the beaches east
of Lake Okeechobee visitors
arrive on the Treasure Coast,
named after the sinking of a

Theatre offers a diverse range

Along the coast is Port St.
Lucie, which has grown from
a small farming community
50 years ago to a beautiful
holiday hotspot where tourists
can explore the environmental
attractions of the area by foot,
horse or canoe.
Jensen Beach, once the
Pineapple Capital of the World,
still holds an annual pineapple
festival and attracts visitors
looking for the best
shopping centres on
the Treasure Coast.
The roads down
the Atlantic coast

Magic of the Everglades
One of many attractions of West
Palm Beach is to ride an airboat
over the Everglades and see
nature’s wonders at their finest.
Don’t imagine for one minute
that the Everglades is a massive
inaccessible swamp. It is a
magical network of forests and
wetlands spread across southern
Florida where many wonderful
creatures and species of birds
and reptiles make their home in
the tropical environment.
There are several ways to
explore this extraordinary
wilderness, including by the
famous airboats and other boat
tours, or canoeing and kayaking,

The facts you need
Passport & Visa Requirements
Passports: All travellers intending to visit the
U.S. without a visa under the terms of the
Visa Waiver Program are required to have
an individual machine-readable or biometric
passport. Any traveller without a machinereadable or biometric passport is required
to obtain a visa before travelling to the U.S.
A machine-readable passport can generally
be identified by the presence of two lines
of computer code printed at the bottom of
the biographical page. (Generally, the only
UK passports NOT machine-readable are
the old-style blue passports or passports
issued overseas.) Further changes regarding
passport requirements came into effect in
2005 and 2006. In brief, machine-readable
passports issued before 26 October 2005 –
no further requirements. Machine-readable
passports issued between 26 October 2005
and 25 October 2006 – require a digital
photograph printed on the data page or
integrated chip with information from the
data page. Machine-readable passports
issued on or after 26 October 2006 –
require integrated chip with information
from the data page (known as biometric or
e-passports). Citizens of Chile, the Czech
Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia,
Lithuania, Malta, Slovakia and the Republic
of Korea (South Korea) must have biometric
passports regardless of when they were
issued. Detailed information, including
a step by step guide to determine your
eligibility for the Visa Waiver Program is
available on the U.S. Embassy’s website at:
http://London.usembassy.gov.
Visas: Most citizens of 38 eligible countries,
including the United Kingdom, travelling on
national passports for business or tourism for
90 days or less, are eligible to travel visa free
under the Visa Waiver Program provided
they meet certain conditions. A passport
indicating that the bearer is a British Subject,
British Dependent Territories Overseas
Citizen, British National (Overseas) Citizen
or a British Protected Person does not
qualify for visa free travel. Bearers of such
passports are not eligible to travel under
the Visa Waiver Program and must obtain a
62-66 General info Dec 30.indd 62
visa before they travel to the U.S. A British
passport must quote the holder’s nationality
as British Citizen and nothing else in order to
qualify for visa free travel.
ESTA
International travellers who are seeking
to travel to the United States under the
Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are subject to
enhanced security requirements and are
required to register in the Electronic System
for Travel Authorisation (ESTA). ESTA applies
only to those VWP travellers entering
the United States by air or sea. Travellers
entering by land either from Canada
or Mexico are not required to register
before travelling. If your ESTA registration
is successful, it will be valid for multiple
U.S. entries for two years or the date your
passport expires, whichever comes first.
Before going on line to register, you
should ensure that you are qualified to travel
under the Visa Waiver Program otherwise
your registration will be rejected. ESTA
also does not guarantee entry into the
United States; that decision rests with the
immigration official at the Port of Entry
in the same way that travellers currently
entering the U.S. under the Visa Waiver
Program or with a visa are subject to
inspection. Again full details about ESTA and
the registration process can be found on the
Embassy’s website. Travellers requiring visas,
such as those travelling on one-way tickets,
staying for longer than 90 days, those
who have been convicted or arrested for
any offence in the past or those who have
previously been refused entry or deported
from the U.S., should ensure that they apply
for the visa well in advance of the planned
departure to the United States and that they
do not make final travel plans until the visa
has been issued and they are in receipt of
their passport. Most persons requiring a visa
will be required to attend an interview at the
U.S. Embassy. Information on applying for a
visa is available from the Embassy’s website.
You are strongly recommended to check
with the Embassy concerning your eligibility
to travel visa free before purchasing your
tickets. Conditions relating to visa free travel
are available from the Embassy’s website
at http://london.usembassy.gov The visa
application form and instructions on the
payment of the visa application fee may
be obtained from the website. If travelling
under the Visa Waiver Program, the passport
must be valid for at least 90 days from the
date on which the holder enters the U.S. If
not, the holder will be admitted until the
expiration date on the passport. Passport
holders from Brunei must possess a passport
valid for at least six months from the date
of departure from the U.S. even if travelling
visa free under the Visa Waiver Program.
Before departure: Stateside visitors must
now book their first night’s accommodation
before they arrive in the country. Arriving
visitors have to provide an accurate address
and it is not acceptable to show ‘touring’
if on a fly-drive holiday, or ‘staying with
relatives’. Additionally, this same information
will also need to be in the airline booking
system when the aircraft departs the UK
and will be sent, ahead of arrival, to U.S.
Customs and Border Protection officials
at the destination airport. The I-94 is now
automated for those entering by air or sea
carrier. This is in addition to information
already required, such as passport number,
country of issue, expiry date, given names
(as they appear on the passport), last name,
gender, date of birth and nationality.
The I-94W is still required to be completed
at land ports of entry and this carries a $6
fee.
Arrival in the United States: Most non-U.S.
citizen travellers to the U.S., from 14-79
years old, are required to enroll in the
US-VISIT programme and have their index
fingerprints digitally scanned and their
photograph taken upon entering the United
States. No ink is used. US-VISIT is an EntryExit system designed to enhance control of
U.S. borders and more effectively enforce
U.S. immigration law. This entry procedure
adds only 10-15 seconds to the entry
screening process. The US Government no
longer issues indefinite visas. Any person
holding an indefinite B1/B2 visa should

 note that it is now only valid for travel to
the US for 10 years from the date of issue of
the visa. If you currently hold a visa, please
check with the Embassy’s website.
Check Before You Go: U.S. immigration
regulations and procedures are subject
to change at short notice so please check
before travelling. Therefore, even if you have
travelled to the U.S. previously for a similar
purpose, you may find that you are now
subject to additional requirements when
applying for a visa. Before planning a trip it
is imperative that you ensure that you are
correctly documented for travel. Check the
Embassy’s website before making final travel
plans to avoid any inconvenience and delay.
Further information is available from http://
London.usembassy.org.uk.
Advance Travel Authorisation—ESTA—
Effective 12 January 2009, Visa Waiver
Program (VWP) travellers are required to
obtain an advance travel authorisation prior
to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea
to the U.S. This travel authorisation can be
obtained by submitting an application online
through the Electronic System for Travel
Authorisation (ESTA) at https://esta.cbp.dhs.
gov. ESTA applications may be submitted
at any time prior to travel, although it
is recommended that applications be
submitted no less than 72 hours in advance
of travel. Within seconds in most cases, the
traveller will receive one of the following
responses:
1. Authorisation Approved: Travel
authorised.
2. Travel Not Authorised: Traveller must
obtain a non-immigrant visa at a U.S.
Embassy or Consulate before travelling
to the U.S.
3. Authorisation Pending: Traveller will need
to check the ESTA web site for updates
within 72 hours to receive a final response.
An approved travel authorisation made
via ESTA is:
• Required for all VWP travellers prior to
boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea
to the U.S.
• Valid, unless revoked, for up to two years
or until the traveller’s passport expires,
whichever comes first.
• Valid for multiple entries into the U.S.
•N
ot a guarantee of admissibility to the
U.S. at a port of entry. Note that ESTA
approval only authorises a traveller to board

a carrier for travel to the U.S. under the
VWP (For additional information, please
visit ”For International Visitors” at www.cbp.
gov/travel). ESTA is designed to enhance
the security of the VWP and enable the
U.S. to maintain and expand programme
participation. An approved ESTA requires
a fee payment of $14. Travellers may pay
the fees directly through the ESTA website
with major credit and debit cards. The fee
is comprised of a $4 fee to recover the
costs incurred by U.S. Customs and Border
Protection (CBP) for the continued operation
and maintenance of the ESTA system and a
$10 travel promotion fee established by the
Travel Promotion Act (TPA) of 2009.
Customs
U.S. Customs Regulations
Personal Exemptions: The following items
may be brought in free of duty and internal
revenue tax provided they are for personal
use only, and not for anyone else, or for
re-sale.
• Personal effects (e.g. wearing apparel;
articles of personal adornment; toiletries;
photographic equipment).
• One litre of alcoholic beverages (e.g.
wine, beer or liquor) if you are an adult
non-resident over 21 years of age. Also,
alcoholic beverages may only be carried on
flights if purchased in the duty-free area
• 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigars, or
three pounds of smoking tobacco, or
proportionate amounts of each.
Currency Regulations: There is no set limit
on the amount of money (U.S. or foreign
currency), travellers cheques or money
orders, that you may bring in, or take out
of the United States. However, a report
must be filed with U.S. Customs and Border
Protection at the time you arrive or depart if
you possess an amount that exceeds $10,000
or the equivalent in foreign currency. A form
for this purpose will be provided at port of
entry. Gift Exemption: A non-resident may
claim, as free of duty and internal revenue
tax, articles up to $100 in value as long as
these gifts are intended for other people. You
also have to remain in the United States for
at least 72 hours, and the gifts must be with
you at all times. This $100 gift exemption,
or any part of it, can be claimed only once
every six months. You may include 100 cigars
within the gift exemption. Articles should not
be gift wrapped, as they must be available
for inspection. If you are not entitled to the
$100 gift exemption, you may bring in, free
of duty, articles up to $25 in value for either
personal or household use. Neither the $100
gift exemption nor the $25 exemption may
be grouped together for members of a family.
It should be noted that a limit is imposed by
some U.S. states on the amount of alcohol
that can be taken in. Customs cannot release
alcoholic beverages above the limit as laid
down by the state in which you arrive.
Helpful Information
Passports/Visas/Esta: A minimum of one
empty page is recommended in passports for
travel to the US. All travellers intending to
visit the US without a visa under the terms of
the Visa Waiver Program are required to have
an individual machine-readable or biometric
passport. A machine-readable passport can
generally be identified by the presence of
two lines of computer code at the bottom of
the biographical page.
International travellers seeking to travel to the
US under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are
subject to enhanced security requirements
and are required to register in the Electronic
System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA).
First Night: Stateside visitors must now book
their first night’s accommodation before they
arrive in the country.
Driving: A full UK driver's license is required.
Electricity: 110/120 volts AC, 60 cycles. Flat,
two-pin plugs are used.
Dates: Dates are written starting with month,
then day and year. For example, December
25 2015 is written in the US as 12. 25.15, not
25.12.15.
Shopping And Taxes: Electrical goods
bought in the United States may not work
correctly in the UK, even when used with
a transformer. The United States uses the
NTSC broadcast system which applies to
items such as pre-recorded video tapes and
video camcorders, etc, not the PAL system
used in the UK. Please ensure that your home
equipment is compatible with such items. For
prerecorded DVDs, the USA is in Region 1
whereas the UK is in Region 2. Again, check if
your DVD equipment at home is compatible.
With a few exceptions, it is not normally
possible to claim back local and state taxes
paid in the USA. Hotels in some destinations
may charge an occupancy tax in addition
to city, state and federal taxes on beds. Car
1/13/15 04:07 PM
Us
rental companies may also do the same in
some areas. Taxes on petrol, cigarettes and
alcohol are built into the final price.
Insurance: There is no agreement between
the US and the UK for medical or hospital
care. There is no equivalent to the National
Health Service and medical expenses are
very high. Medical insurance is strongly
urged, with the suggested coverage being
a minimum of £1,000,000. Anyone renting a
car is also urged to take out comprehensive
insurance as litigation claims are common in
the US and payments are high.

Money: All major credit cards are accepted
throughout the US. When hiring a car or
booking into a hotel, an amount will be put
on to the credit card to cover all or some of
the costs. Travellers’ cheques in US dollars
are recommended. If these are carried, they
will be accepted as cash in most restaurants,
hotels and shops. It is recommended to arrive
in the US with about $100 in cash, including
one dollar bills for tipping and paying taxis.
ATMs are plentiful but will usually charge for
withdrawals.
Tipping: As at home, tipping is a common
and expected practice. Suggested tips
are: 15 – 20 per cent of the bill for meals
in restaurants and the same to taxi drivers.
About $2/3 per bag or suitcase carried by
bellboys or porters at hotels or airports is the
norm. If going on an escorted tour, check
beforehand whether tips are included. If not,
the tour guide and others will expect a tip.
Disabled Travellers: Disabled motorists
can often get parking permits. See london.
usembassy.gov/rcdisable.html General
information on facilities for disabled travellers
to the US can be found at www.usatourist.

The Original florida sunshine escape
When you think of American originals, there is one place that instantly stirs up feelings of fun
in the sun by simply saying its name. Welcome to Daytona Beach. The original sunshine escape
