The office provides oversight for the organization known as ITaP, which provides central IT services and user support for the University’s research, academic and administrative needs. work with IT B A S I C C O M P U T I N G TO O L S Information Technology page [1] work with IT A C C E S S TO S E RV I C E S Career account & home directory A Purdue career account gives access to an @purdue.edu email account with 1 GB of storage, an individual home directory with 500 MB of storage and Web page hosting. PERKS • Anyone who needs to obtain an account login and password may visit ITaP customer service in Stewart Center, room G65. A Purdue photo ID is needed for identification purposes. • Storing files in the career account home directory provides access to them from office, home or lab computers—anytime, anywhere. There’s no need to carry files on a thumb drive or print extra copies of documents when the home directory is available. BONUS Along with the home directory, faculty, staff and students each have an individual Web page. Details are provided at https:// www.itap.purdue.edu/tlt/careeraccount/ webpage.cfm. COMES IN HANDY To access the home directory— From an ITaP computer lab: • On a PC running Windows, the home directory is located on drive H in Windows Explorer. • On a Mac, double-click the Macintosh HD icon to open it. Then select a career account login to access the home directory. • From a Solaris workstation, the icon on the desktop represents the career account home directory. From an office or home computer: Follow the directions for securing a virtual private network at http://www.itap. purdue.edu/connections/vpn. BEST USES • As a means of access to information technology for Purdue students, faculty and staff with disabilities • Consultation and training to those who teach Purdue students with disabilities • Consultation and training to those who support access to information technology for people with disabilities PERKS • ITaP’s assistive technology staff will help create accessible information technology, or evaluate the accessibility of existing technology used in the classroom. • The staff will assist Web designers in creating and developing a fully accessible Web site, or in evaluating the accessibility of an existing site. BEST USES • Consulting, design and installation services for Purdue departments interested in audiovisual facilities, distance learning facilities, videoconferencing facilities or television production facilities are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on regular Purdue workdays. • The design and installation services cover existing spaces on campus. If requested, this group will consult for audiovisual needs in new construction. • Service to labs, departmental rooms, conference rooms and other facilities charge the University’s current rates. PERKS • Installations may take place afterhours to accommodate facility availability or to meet deadlines. • Service to centrally scheduled classrooms is offered free of charge. PERKS • ITaP operates Purdue’s academic cable TV and the video fiber network that connects most of Purdue’s major event venues on campus with a broadcast network services facility in Stewart Center. • ITaP administers, broadcasts and maintains the Purdue Channel on Comcast’s educational access Channel 5 (which is shared with the Lafayette School Corporation), the residence halls’ Boiler TV Channel 13 and Purdue Academic Cable Channel 2. • Video services and distribution capabilities are available to the Purdue campus, including satellite transmission (KU-Band), Internet video streaming, two-way video conferencing and videotape and CD and DVD duplication. • ITaP staff offer video engineering support for all ITaP video facilities in Stewart Center. They serve the University’s educational, instructional and marketing needs through high-end production, event recording and distance learning capabilities. BEST USES • From concept to completion, ITaP’s seasoned, award-winning staff work within clients’ desired budgets and time frames to produce an effective product of the highest quality. • Digital video cameras, well-trained operators and quality microphones guarantee superb quality video and audio recordings of class sessions and conference events. • Instructors whose courses have been transformed for distance learning or who require teleconferencing may use Stewart Center’s G52 classroom studio, which includes multiple video cameras, graphics computer, projection, microphones and video playback and recording capabilities. PERKS • The full-service broadcast television studio meets all broadcast specifications, allows for blue/ green screen setup, and includes a network control room for live or taped regional and national productions. • The high-end video field unit is equipped with a full 1080p highdefinition camera and a complement of support equipment, including portable lighting, computerized teleprompting and stereo audio recording. PERKS • ITaP provides alerts, advisories, resources and links in response to current threats. • Many resources are available on the SecurePurdue Web site, which serves as a clearinghouse for information on computer security and issues. • SecurePurdue protects sensitive data, such as an individual’s Social Security number, while ensuring the privacy and confidentiality of this information. • Purdue has established an emergency warning notification system to quickly communicate emergency messages.You may register your cell phone number to receive a text message. BONUS Faculty, staff and students can download for free the newest version of McAfee antivirus software to protect work or home computers. Information Technology page [7] work with IT ENTERPRISE SERVICES OnePurdue An enterprise-wide initiative integrating mission-critical enterprise data, other information and business processes, the OnePurdue project involves financial management, human resource management, enrollment and student affairs. BEST USES • Purdue’s employee self-service is a convenient, secure and user-friendly resource that stores individual records of University faculty, staff and students and allows them to update personal information, display and suppress directory information and view salary statements. • myPurdue is a new portal system that replaces SSINFO as the source for students’ academic and financial account information at Purdue. It is a part of the software package called Banner. Some benefits of myPurdue include real-time online registration and credit card payment for tuition. PERKS • OnePurdue allows administrators and other University decision makers to view real-time, accurate data from a common database in a wide variety of areas throughout the Purdue system. • Because OnePurdue is web-based, users will be able to log on anytime, anywhere, and from any platform. Anyone with a Purdue career account can use it—all Purdue faculty, staff and students on every campus. PERKS • Qualtrics is menu-driven with a graphical display of question types. • It has integrated graphics and statistical tools. • The library of prebuilt survey templates includes— Customer or student surveys. Human resources surveys. Market surveys. Marketing surveys. Conjoint analysis. Web site surveys. • Users can schedule email distribution of surveys with a builtin mailer. BEST USES • Most faculty and staff members at Purdue have telephones in their offices. • Voice mail messages can be managed by phone or through a computer with a security encrypted webaccess portal. • Business-related long-distance calls are billed to a Purdue account using a pre-assigned individual authorization code. PERKS • Headsets provide hands-free communication while enhancing comfort. • Conference calls are made easier with the Polycom Sound Station, available for daily rental, and Meet Me Conference Lines, which can be reserved through the University’s telephone operators. BONUSES • Consultation is available for large departmental moves or telecommunications solutions. • Supervisors can request group or individualized training. • Toll-free numbers can be added to any Purdue phone line. BEST USES • Delivering course content to students from a distance • Encouraging students to meet virtually to discuss and complete team projects • Delivering real-time instruction to students outside the classroom PERKS • All Purdue faculty and staff have an Adobe Acrobat Connect Professional account and can request to host a meeting. A host can schedule meetings, invite guests, manage content and assign other roles to meeting attendees. • All Purdue students have their own private meeting rooms they can use during their Purdue career. • Adobe Connect users can integrate PowerPoint slides with live and recorded audio and video in Connect meeting presentations. BONUSES • Faculty can create and manage multiple online meetings for everything from research collaboration to virtual office hours. • All Connect meeting sessions can be recorded and made available via online links. Members of the Purdue community can use PAL to connect wireless-ready laptops and personal digital assistants, or PDAs, to the Purdue network (and, through it, to the Internet) in most common areas of academic buildings on the West Lafayette campus. BEST USES • Making course content and lectures available to students anytime, anywhere • Developing a centralized repository of course content, either open or password-protected PERKS • This service is available upon request for all Purdue courses offered for credit. • Course lectures and supplemental course content can be automatically published for students to use with their portable devices. • More than 200 Technology in the Classroom locations have BoilerCast capabilities. See page 18 for more information. • Students subscribe to course content via RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication. New files are automatically downloaded when students launch iTunes. page [16] BONUSES • This service assists auditory and visual learners, as well as non-native speakers of English. • Once a faculty member requests the service at the beginning of the semester, ITaP handles recording the course and posts the link automatically. • If instructors use Blackboard, they can integrate the service into course materials by simply creating a link to the BoilerCast site. It is installed in all Technology in the Classroom (TIC) sites. BEST USES • Promoting interactivity among students • Obtaining feedback from students— for example, by collecting data and organizing it instantly, polling the class and administering multiple-choice and numeric quizzes and exams PERKS • This tool helps to create an exciting and fun instructional environment, achieving 100-percent student participation and reducing administrative workload. • Clickers add interactivity to the classroom, even in a large lecture course of 500 students. This system helps create a nonthreatening environment that allows all students to participate—even the shy ones. A CATCH … BONUS eInstruction results can be exported to Blackboard, Microsoft Excel and Word or other programs. COMES IN HANDY The system’s ready to use in TIC sites— • It involves a radiofrequency receiver in the classroom, a response pad for each student and a software package that allows quizzing, polling and more. • Students operate the response pads, which resemble TV remote control units, to answer the instructor’s questions. Students purchase response pads at campus bookstores. Each response pad can be registered to generate a unique, identifiable signal. PERKS • Each Technology in the Classroom (TIC) site computer is equipped with a CD-ROM drive and a DVD player. The computer is attached to speakers for sound. • An additional network connection is available for a laptop. • Instructors may purchase their own wireless mouse and keyboard. Each TIC site has a receiver and mouse cradle to accommodate wireless technology. • Each TIC site has the eInstruction classroom response system, which consists of a radio-frequency receiver, response pads for students and a versatile software package that allows quizzing, polling and more. This system is often referred to as “clickers.” • TIC site computers have the full range of software available in the ITaP instructional labs. BONUSES In a TIC site, instructors can— • Demonstrate software. • Access the Internet. • Use other personal software or materials (CD or DVD). • Use files from a CD or USB device. • Access materials in a Purdue career account home directory. • Take attendance, give assessments and receive instant feedback with the eInstruction classroom response system. • Bring in a laptop computer. PERKS • Course email lists for each course section are available from ITaP. • All lists are closed. Only members can send to them. • Only @purdue.edu email addresses will be added to these lists. Non-Purdue addresses cannot be used. • Course email lists are based on the University registrar’s data, so students’ email addresses are dropped or added to the lists as students drop or add courses. • ITaP automatically deletes course email lists at the end of the semester. • Instructors do not need to collect and manage student email addresses. • Instructors find the umbrella list helpful, for example, when teaching a large lecture class with a number of sections. The umbrella list provides separate lists for each section, and a single list for the entire group of classes. • These email lists protect students’ identities and email addresses. • Instructors can use the course email list to send attachments up to 7 MB in size. Three list options are available— • Announce-only is a list of members who cannot reply to anyone on the list. • Discussion allows list members to communicate with each other. • Umbrella allows sending email to a collection of lists. BEST USES • Students, faculty and staff members can request that software be installed on the lab computer network for course use. • Faculty members can reserve instructional labs for teaching. PERKS • Labs are equipped with PC, Mac or Solaris computers. • All ITaP labs are equipped with printers. • Most labs have scanners. BONUSES • Users can easily access home directories, which provide 500 MB of storage space, on lab computers. • All PC and Mac lab computers have CD-RW drives or DVD-RW/CD-RW drives. Courses are available in multiple formats, from informational seminars to hands-on multimedia workshops and self-guided online tutorials. Technology training topics include— • Building a Web site to deliver instructional materials. • Using tablets and PDAs in the classroom. • Working with graphics and imaging. • Complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act. • Creating accessible Web pages. • Using Blackboard. • Using Blackboard with Dreamweaver and Respondus. • Managing the Blackboard grade book using Excel. • Understanding copyright implications for online resources. • Applying collaboration technologies. • Editing video. • Incorporating simulations and games in the classroom. BEST USES • Adding an online component to a traditional course • Developing a distanceeducation course PERKS • Distributing, receiving and grading assignments online • Conducting tests and quizzes online and grading them automatically • Distributing grades electronically • Providing content selectively to individuals or groups • Collaborating with other instructors or departments to generate reusable content BONUSES Instructors use Blackboard to— • Manage the class schedule with Calendar. • Increase student interaction with Chat and Whiteboard. • Continue discussions outside of class with Discussions. • Expand office hours by using Mail and Chat. Information Technology page [23] teach with IT INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN Distance Education awards ITaP provides support and awards to Purdue faculty for developing high-quality distance-education courses. All faculty and staff at the West Lafayette campus and statewide technology sites are eligible. REQUIREMENTS Candidates are required to— • Develop and deliver one distanceeducation course from a course management system platform, such as Blackboard. Hybrid or blended courses are not eligible. • Attend a two-day intensive workshop. • Attend an individual consultation with an ITaP educational technologist or a consultant from Purdue’s Office of Continuing Education and Conferences (OCEC). • Fill out and submit the program’s course-submission form by the due date. Submissions must be made online. Only one course per instructor each year is allowed. BONUSES • ITaP and OCEC staff members will select the top distance-education courses from all submissions. The selected instructors each will receive a $3,000 incentive award. • The top courses will be recognized at the next ITaP teaching and learning conference awards presentation. BEST USES • Automate indicators of student performance and behavior to encourage student success • Establish expectations for student performance in class and provide feedback based on these expectations • Customize emails to all students about their performance • Direct students to available resources on campus, such as the instructor’s office hours, further practice in study materials or help sessions • Provide consistent feedback so students can continually monitor their performance PERKS • When students log in to Blackboard for a Signals course, they see a visual representation of their progress in class, a traffic signal. A red signal indicates they are at risk of not succeeding in the course. A yellow signal tells students that, with a bit more effort, they could be more successful. A green signal shows that, if they continue their study practices, they are likely to complete the course successfully. • This system facilitates greater and more frequent instructor-student communication. BONUS In pilots of this system, students who were struggling to succeed (yellow signal) were more likely to seek out additional help than those whose status was at risk of being unsuccessful (red signal). BONUS The content databases contain millions of books and journals and more than 4.5 billion pages of current and archived Web data. They are updated at a rate of 40 million pages per day. PERKS • Students electronically submit papers through the SafeAssign assignment in Blackboard. • SafeAssign compares each document to millions of pages of content located on the Internet, proprietary databases and other previously submitted documents. • The results are returned in the form of customized reports, in which any text matches found in SafeAssign databases are highlighted and linked to their source. • These reports allow instructors to make the final determination of whether plagiarism has occurred. • Faculty may choose to give the students the opportunity to analyze and revise their work, correcting accidental or intentional errors of documentation. BEST USES • To create an immersive environment, ITaP has a virtualreality theater for display of 3-D stereoscopic images on a 30-by-8foot screen or in a semi-enclosed “room” with three walls. • A motion-capture system records human movement and converts it to an accurate 3-D digital representation for use in analysis and animation. • This ITaP facility has a videoconferencing and collaboration room with an 18-by-5-foot screen for displaying interactive feeds from multiple sites, including internationally. • It also has a tiled wall with a 7-by12-foot, high-resolution display area and 2-D, 3-D and stereo capabilities.
