Taekwon-Do European Championships were held from the 22nd to 25th of October 2015 in Motherwell, Scotland. The event took place in the huge arena of the Ravenscraig Sports Complex, which was also one of the venues used for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The competition was fittingly of very high standard with 520 of the best competing from 23 European countries. It was well organised and ran smoothly with any minor glitches dealt with under the guidance of Master Alex Dunbar, Master James Tjin-A-Ton and Mr. Attila Solti of the AETF Tournament Committee and also by the Organising Committee members: Mr. John McIlvaney, Ms Gillian McIlvaney and Mr. David Condie. Amongst the guests of honour were GM Pablo Trajtenberg (President of ITF); GM Paul Weiler (Vice-President Senior of ITF); GM Tom MacCallum; GM Williem Jacob Bos (Director of ITF); Master Juan Ferrando (General Secretary of ITF); Master Tadeusz Loboda (President of AETF) and many other honourable members of the ITF and AETF boards as well as many ITF Champions past and present. ITF England President Donato Nardizzi was also among them. The 4 ITF England Umpires on duty at the Euros were GM Orello Ellis, Master Ken 2 - Totally Tae Kwon Do Chesterman, Mrs Elena Shutova and Dr Jeff Brider. The ITF England National Team was led and coached by National Coaches: Mr. Philip Lear (Team Manager), Mr. Daniel Lammin, Mr. Piotr Capaja, Mr. Neil Ernest, Mr. Paul Adams, Mr. Wayne Burns, Mr. Johann De Silva and Mrs Wendy McColl. RESULTS The England squad had a very Carly Wilson, Jenny Swain and Jenifer Pena successful campaign this year and - Ladies Team Patterns managed to surpass achievements from the 2014 European Championships with the following results. Matt was coached by Mr. Phillip Lear and Reuben by Mr. Wayne Burns. Both of them delighted England’s supporters with an excellent demonstration of skill, worthy of a European Championship Final! Matt trains with Absolute Taekwon-Do, alongside current ITF England Team mates, Zak Espi, Shane O’Rourke, Ashleigh Hawkins, Katie and Abigail Wawman under his instructor is Mr. Darren Anderson. Matt has been competing at the very 4 - Totally Tae Kwon Do highest level for a long time (despite still looking about 15) and the European Championship was the only major honour missing from his collection. Matt is a former 2 time World Champion (2007 & 2013) and as such deserves his status as one of the ITF’s most successful competitors. It is rumoured that this will be his last major ITF tournament, as he is planning his retirement from the ITF Taekwon-Do International Competition scene and what a finish, if this happens to be true… Watch this space for more on Matt’s carrier and future plans in an interview with the Champ himself! Matt Cadle -European Champion under 63 kg Izzy Brider Izzy Brider & Coach Mr Paul Adams Izzy displayed excellent technique and skill in winning Gold in the Junior Female 2nd Degree Patterns category and also came away with a Silver in the Junior Female under 50kg individual sparring. As a result of these performances, Izzy was named Best Overall Junior Female Competitor, a status well deserved given her fantastic performances across the six individual and team events she competed in. Izzy competed in individual and team patterns, individual and team sparring, team power and team special technique and as girls captain led by example. She was coached through her patterns rounds by coach Mr. Paul Adams and her sparring rounds by England’s Team Manager Mr. Philip Lear. Totally Tae Kwon Do - 5 Izzy trains with Mr. James Miley at the Trident TKD Academy, alongside England team mate Romy Motthershead. Izzy has been training since age 5 and is a great example of dedication and perseverance having triumphed over setbacks and disappointments, something all serious athletes encounter on the road to success. The title of European Champion 2015 adds to the World Championship Gold that she won earlier in the year. Izzy will be moving up to the seniors next year and her successes in 2015 have been the perfect end to her competition career as a Junior. Izzy Brider - Patterns European Champion Tiegan Flay Tiegan Flay, delighted her team mates, coaches and supporters alike, securing another Gold for England, after fighting her way through the rounds of the Junior Female under 45kg category. Tiegan won double gold at last years World Cup but this was undoubtedly her best performance in major ITF tournaments to date in a very tough division. Tiegan started training with P.U.M.A. (Professional Unification of Martial Arts) aged 8, initially with Mr. Jason Mortimer and then Master John Black until he sadly passed away in 2013. Her current instructor is Mr Brett Dowling. Tiegan has been competing since she was a yellow belt and attending P.U.M.A. National 6 - Totally Tae Kwon Do Squad Training sessions since she was a green belt. At the 2015 Euros, Tiegan was coached through the rounds by her coach of many years Mr. Daniel Lammin who managed to get the best out of her as a result of having worked together for many years throughout her competitive career. The final was a very tense and close affair with the lead changing hands repeatedly in the final. Tiegan went behind with just over 10 seconds left in the match but showed great heart to earn the crucial score in the last few seconds to earn the most dramatic of golds. Tiegan’s achievement in winning gold is all the more remarkable as she had not been 100% during the tournament. At the time nothing much was thought of this but a week after returning home she was in hospital having been diagnosed with pneumonia and tuberculosis. We’re glad to be able to confirm that she is now on the road to recovery. All 3 of England’s Champions serve as a great inspiration to their team mates as well as up and coming competitors. Each of them has a fantastic work ethic and they have all shown huge levels of commitment over a long period. As a result of that, and more than a little talent, they have achieved truly amazing things. To top it all off all remain completely grounded and as a result are very popular members of the team, something which could easily be seen from the reactions of the entire team when they each won gold! Tiegan Flay - under 45kg Junior Females Sparring - European Champion OTHER TEAM ACHIEVEMENTS Of course, the preparation for the 2015 AETF European Championships was not without challenges and set-backs. Injuries and withdrawals meant that there had to be some late changes in the England Patterns and Sparring Teams. This was particularly challenging for the patterns teams as 4 patterns teams ended up with one or more new team members coming in as late as five weeks prior to the event. The new team members had to learn all twelve team patterns splits during a very limited amount of time with practice opportunities limited due to the geographical spread of the team members. The patience, commitment and hard work everyone had to put in to come together and put on credible, competent performances on the mats on the day, was testament to the team spirit within all who were involved, competitors and coaches alike. Totally Tae Kwon Do - 7 Mens Patterns Team Despite all of this all teams did themselves proud with the Junior Male Patterns Team managing the fantastic achievement of coming away with a Silver and the Senior Ladies getting Bronze after only four weeks of their first appearance together as patterns teams. Furthermore, the Senior Ladies Team as a whole, led by Coach Mr. Daniel Lammin, ranked 3rd in the classification tables in the Female Team Events, securing a medal across the three events they competed in, with a Silver in Team Sparring and Bronze in Team Patterns and Power. The Ladies Sparring Team all put in very strong performances and had to face the ladies of Norway, Sweden and Poland, winning an impressive Silver for their efforts. Special mention has to go to Aniko Heredi. Affectionately known as ‘Smash’ among her team mates, she came away with 4 medals: silver for individual power; individual 8 - Totally Tae Kwon Do Aniko Heredi - knife hand break Katie Wawman sparring against Norway and team sparring; and a bronze for team power, truly exceptional! The Junior England Girls came 3rd in the Female Junior Competitors classification table with Izzy’s Gold and Silver, Tiegan’s gold and Katie Wawman’s Bronze in under 65kg Junior Female Sparring, after a strong performance, which could have easily placed her in the final. Her score flipped in the last seconds of the semi-final after a minus point, which stopped her from going through the final. Katie also won bronze at the World Championship earlier this year and undoubtedly has a promising competitive carrier ahead of her, definitely one to watch! Our girls also performed well in the Team Special Technique event with all of them managing to hit the targets but failing to gain maximum points and therefore missing on a medal. Our boys did well two despite a heavier than usual injury toll, with five of the Junior males having to visit the tournament doctor with serious injuries and keeping our excellent team physiotherapist Wendy McColl incredibly busy. She worked around the clock to keep all team members moving be it with taping, massage, icing or advice. Adam Bonwick - Juche The talented Adam Bonwick managed to secure silver in Second Degree Junior Male Patterns, despite sustaining a serious injury in the semi-final against team mate Zack Leberl who came away Totally Tae Kwon Do - 9 Head Kicks - Left: Hayden McCarthy against Russia and Right: Zak Espi against Ireland with a Bronze in the same category. In the final, Adam’s Juche was still impressive even through the pain. Unfortunately, he was then unable to fight the next day in the under 68kg Junior Male division or for the rest of the tournament but is recovering well since. Zack Leberl went on to impress us all with his individual fights the next day, delivering one of the best kicks of the tournament, a perfectly executed back kick, which had the attention of the crowd in the hall. The only reason why Zack did not end up in the final and came away with a Bronze in sparring too was because he ended up with a dislocated shoulder in the semi-final and was unable to continue. Unfortunately, Tim Lobley had to Adam & Jenny Swain - Pre-Arranged Sparring 10 - Totally Tae Kwon Do Ladies Patterns Team miss out on at least a Bronze despite a great performance in the 68kg division due to a cracked rib in the round before the semi-final rendering him also unable to continue. Ollie Cottrell also under 68kg also joined the injured group with a dislocated shoulder and our lightest Junior Male, Tom Taylor, having achieved a bronze in his individual sparring event, ended up with an elbow injury in the Team events having bravely fought the tallest and heaviest member of the Polish Junior Males Team who was around twice his weight. Ollie Cottrell - under 68kg Junior sparring Our Senior Men’s Sparring Team fought well against their tough Irish opponents, who were the 2015 World Champions and sadly didn’t manage to proceed to the later rounds after a narrow overall loss. Finally, our Senior Men then had our hearts in a flutter once more with great performance in the incredibly competitive Team Power Event and managed to do us proud with a Bronze. Totally Tae Kwon Do - 11 TEAM SPIRIT One of the characteristics of a good team is the chemistry within. To be successful, a team needs more than just good organisational stability, communication, individually strong competitors and great coaches. To work well, a team needs that special chemistry which binds the individuals together and makes each member of that team push and work a little harder. Of course, there is no exact prescribed formula of how this chemistry is achieved but clearly common goals, shared experiences, routines and rituals all help to find that magic chemistry balance that makes a group of great individuals into a great team. For England at the Euros, this special chemistry formula included, among other ingredients, lots of cream! During the European Championships this year, the Pie Face Game became key part of England’s celebration ritual and helped make some wonderful memories of togetherness, as big dollops of cream got splattered on happy Pie Face - Mr Lear Pie Face - Johann De Silva faces, to the sound of cheers and laughter. Gold for Pie Face or Pie Face for Gold. The rules laid down by Mr. Lear were simple enough. For each gold medal won, the Champion in question got to hold a Pie Face execution ceremony of each of the Coaches in order of their choosing. The first of these ceremonies caused such enjoyment and hilarity among Pie Face - Piotr Capaja Pie Face - Paul Adams the team that during later finals chants for ‘Pie Face’ erupted from the stands in support for competitors on the mats! Somehow, the rules morphed slightly and our European Champions themselves ended up in the splattering line. So popular was pie face that on the last night the Irish national team also joined in on the fun! FUNDING FUTURE PERFORMANCE Putting the fun to one side, all members of the ITF England National Team have worked incredibly hard in 2015 with two major ITF competitions on the Calendar. Most of the competitors and the coaching staff attended both events and as such the effort, dedication and time investment into the Team’s Success was huge. The England National Team operates in an impressively professional manner, especially considering that this is a group of National coaches and athletes representing England almost entirely at their own expense. The team does receive a limited amount of funding from ITF England, which itself is a non-profit organisation funded by its members and some 12 - Totally Tae Kwon Do Mr Daniel 'Gulliver' Lammin and the Lilliputian Ladies Patterns Team after winning the first round personalised kit bags courtesy of Top Ten and Bytomic . If anyone is interested in sponsoring the team going forward then this would make a huge difference to everyone involved and hopefully enable England to climb even further up the overall rankings. Please contact us on PR@itfengland.com to make contact, if this would be something you wish to explore further. Nick Edmunds - Punch Break Despite the limited funds, the England Team has enjoyed one of their most successful years ever under the leadership of Team Manager Mr. Philip Lear. Attention now turns to the 2016 European Championships, which will be taking place 28th April -2nd May 2016 in Tampere, Finland where the team will be aiming to build further on their recent Totally Tae Kwon Do - 13 Luke Thompson - 4th Degree Patterns Shane O'Rourke Team Power successes. The national squad selections for this event will be held on 6 December in Birmingham, after which the journey begins again for another year of challenges, hard work and successes. In closing, this is what England’s Team Manager, Mr. Philip Lear had to say: "It's been a real pleasure to be involved with the National Team for the last 3 years, our England have gone from picking up medals here and there in a few championships when lucky to regular medal contenders and podium winners. This is down to so much hard work in the background from our Tournament Director Mr Nick Symonds as well as all the coaches who have worked with us since the beginning of 2013. Preparation for the Euros 2016 will take our team to yet another level, I will be working harder as Team Manager to make sure that every base is covered and ensuring all the coaches are getting the best out of the competitors. As our medal tally rises so does our expectation and we just always ground ourselves with the thought that our performances will give us the results we deserve, prepare well for the performances and the medals will come. I am looking forward to a very successful 2016 season and the positive results that will bring".
