Preface / Vorwort
When we look at the world more closely, it occurs to us
that life is not merely existence but it must have both
a purpose and goal. The search to obtain this can be
a long and painful journey before the meaning of life is
found and can often cause much trouble and even a
lifelong journey of searching or suffering. One could say
that the price of paradise has hung around our necks like
a curse.
Nevertheless, at the heart of existence, the wide
spectrum of Art whose purpose is to attain something
in life cannot be extracted from this curse. Of course
one can compartmentalise art in a practical way, but the
essence of the creative moment does not belong to this,
in fact quite the opposite. To think of art as functional
would destroy its very existence. In this sense, we must
think of the language of art as created by God.
With these thoughts, this International Artists Symposium
takes place: in a creative atmosphere where the creation
of a work of art come from deep within the artist and with
this creative freedom and friendship one can experience
the creativity of Art in its essence.
In diesem Sinne

Statement
Touches through differences
Verbindungen der Unterschiede
When we are talking about an international
workshop, we are talking about touches through
differences. Artists from all over the world come
together and live under one roof which could be
100m square, for a fortnight, to continue their
different heritages, cultures and languages.
Through these differences, they seek to find a way
to realise touches. There are 35 Artists attending
this Symposium, who in succeeding in creating
their own identity, choose and accept that
An diesem Symposium nehmen 35
Künstlerinnen und Künstler teil, die ihre eigene
Identität weiterentwickeln und akzeptieren
“I AM THE ARTIST”
„ICH BIN EIN KÜNSTLER“
Through this identity we can talk about their
works of art which they produce during this
period together. We realise the general aspects
of touches which are translated through their
paintings, through their handling of materials,
colours and techniques. Some like to mix
calligraphy as a way of getting in touch with their
roots. Generally, we can say that most of the
artists at the Symposium are keeping modernism
as a reference to their actual presence.

Project description / Projektbeschreibung
The concept of international artists from different
cultures and backgrounds coming and working
together reached its pinnacle in 2003 with the taking
place of the First International Artists Symposium in
Essen, Germany.
Zielsetzung des im Jahr 2003 gegründeten
internationalen Kunstvereins „European Artists
Once or twice a year, a two week International
Symposium with Workshop is held in Essen and in
another country. Creative development, discussion
evenings and performances from the invited artists
culminates in an intensive exchange of ideas. This
in turn symbolises the common ground which unites
artists from all over the world.
In diesem Sinne findet 1 – 2 Mal jährlich ein
zweiwöchiges Symposium mit Workshop auf
internationaler Ebene in Essen (Deutschland) und in
anderen Ländern statt. Vorträge, Diskussionsabende
und Performances der eingeladenen Künstler
fördern einen intensiven Gedankenaustausch.
Es entsteht ein Gefühl der Zusammengehörigkeit
hinweg über alle Landesgrenzen.
Attending this year´s symposium are between 1535 invited international artists (painters, graphic
designers, photographers and sculptors). Each
participant is required to donate three of their
finished works to the Association. Two of the works
are to cover accommodation and the printing of
the catalogue. The third work will become part of
the Association´s collection which will thereafter
be exhibited throughout Europe in museums and
galleries.
Zu den jeweiligen Symposien werden 15 – 35
Künstler aus aller Welt (Maler, Grafiker, Fotografen
und Bildhauer) eingeladen. Jeder Teilnehmer
verpflichtet sich drei seiner gefertigten Arbeiten dem
Verein zur Verfügung zu stellen. Zwei davon werden
zu Deckung der Unkosten der Veranstaltung mit
Unterbringung, Verpflegung und dem Druck eines
Kataloges zum Verkauf angeboten. Das dritte Werk
wird in die Sammlung des Vereins aufgenommen,
die europaweit in Museen oder Galerien präsentiert
werden.

1956
Born on 1 July, in Leoben, Austria
since 1977 Freelance Artist, lives and works in Niklasdorf, Upper Styria
since 2003 Member of „European Artists e.V.”, Velbert, Germany
Georg Brandner, Painter, Sculptor and Designer. Exhibits widely in Group and Solo Exhibitions in
Europe and America. Brandner´s work spans from traditional painting to large expressive works.
Growing up in an industrial environment, fire, metal and raw energy have shaped his work. Brandner´s
gestural work is both engaging and expressively powerful.
His use of colour is based on black and white, combined with passionate and symbolic red. The subject
matter is a rich play of colour associations. His dynamic use of different materials (collage) as well as
colour, gives a richness of structure reflecting our diverse reality.
Brandner spannt
I communicate through art

My works are connected to the lack of balance between technology and nature, and the danger
of extinction of wild life. Last year, some of the works were dedicated to the peace process and to
womens´ abasement in western and eastern society. I express myself in Haiku poems as well, poems
which convey my personal philosophy and my feelings towards what I see around me.

1956
Born 28 November in Oberwesel, Germany
since 2003
Lecturer at the art faculty, University of Paderborn, Germany
Wolfgang Brenner draws, writes, paints, collages, mounts, arranges, assembles and
projects memories. His work although experimental, follows traditional aesthetic styles
and in doing so this allows him to develop his own visual language. His material based on
his personal experiences, juxtaposes appearance with reality e.g. – philosophy v banality,
serious v funny. To understand Brenner´s work and to discover its meaning is an aesthetic
journey and one which enables us to confront these issues for ourselves.
Wolfgang Brenner zeichnet, schreibt, mahlt, setzt Zeichen, montiert, arrangiert, findet Dinge,
irrealen Vorstellungswelten.

Artist´s Statement
The basic element of my work consists of a search for and attempt to formulate my own “visual grammar”; a way of codifying reality as an autonomous
visual transmission based upon my own system of signs and ideas.
My work is influenced by a sphere of meanings constituting three values of particular importance to myself: Truth - understood as independent,
discerned by intuition, a primary basic value uncoloured by any option or preference whatsoever. Next Transmission - a subjective codification on line,
colour and shape in more or less recognizable symbols. Their context indicates an opposite form of perception. Finally, Mystery - a hidden sense,
meaning, understood only through concentration, experience and subsequent analysis.
Previously printed graphics become “half-products” and are the basis for further transformations. I literally join together several prints in a way that
allows me to achieve the desired result. Using several traditional methods I create a two-dimensional graphic collage. This, in turn, becomes the basis
for the creation of three-dimensional objects and graphic installations which offers the option of free manipulation of Space and the use of values such
as Light and Movement. Consideration of these three elements forms a foundation for my work and is one of the most important creative processes.
This stage is technical, logical, reasoned yet the decision to actually finish the piece is governed solely by intuition and all that this implies. Intuition, it
seems to me, is what separates art from other forms of human activity.

Renata Cywicki
Born in Przemysl, Poland
Combines painting with uniquely created fabrics, Leads a private drawing and painting
studio, Member of European Artists Association (EAA), Velbert, Germany.
Her works have been exhibited in Poland, Germany, Romania, Austria and Hungary.
Participant in International Art Conferences and Symposiums including Poland (S/lonne
2001, 2002, 2003), Hungary (Hajdoboszormeny 1998, 2000, Vaja 2001), Germany (EssenWerden 2003, 2004) and Romania (Aiud 2003). Her works can be found in both public and
private collections in Poland and abroad.
Touching a mystery - always intriguing and enticing. The very possibility of such an “encounter” presents a great challenge (...)
Only he who seeks has the chance to find such an important value in art – the truth. Only then can this can be translated through the use of carefully
selected mediums. Cywicka strives to find the truth, and in so doing uses basic materials: linen, cotton, string or paper which she uses in an
unconventional, uniquely intriguing and original way. She tears specially prepared and painted canvas into equal strips. They constitute the fundamental
construction material for her work. She then lays the strips to form abstract landscapes or compositions, onto large canvas.
What makes Cywicki´s work wholly unique is her innovative treatment of specially created form and color, which she uses to maximum compositional
effect, through consciously layered planes. This is complimented with an impression of lightness as well as subtlety of form, and space.
Cywicka is constantly discovering new and fascinating worlds, in a true attempt to challenge both the world and oneself.
Woytek Grela, October 2003

“Magic is what makes the painter”, says his maker. On his long journey through what has been an
unusual life, experiencing the fate of Europe´s highs and lows, he discovered the world of painting,
through which he communicates his past experiences and brings them to the present. His goal is
painting, which erases hypocrisy and life`s theatre. It shows man`s existence in its purest form.

Corneliu Ionescu
1938
Born 10 August in Tatulesti, Romania
Masters Degree at the Academy of Fine Arts „N Grigorescu”
in Bucharest under Corneliu Baba,
Professor at the „G. Enescu” University for Fine Arts in Iasi, Romania
since 1963 Member of the Association of Fine Arts in Romania
since 1963 Regular exhibitor with the Association of Visual Arts in Iasi. Participates and contributes to
annual publications, biennales, major exhibitions and other national and international exhibitions. He
has had simultaneous exhibitions at the Academy for Fine Arts. the Museum for Visual Arts and other
Museums and Galleries in Iasi.
Corneliu Ionescu´s work is both elemental and expressive. He works within the perameters of line
and plane and through this balance, he defines his compositions. Combined with his use of form and
materials, he brings his canvas to life. His abstractionist style adheres to strict, structural elements and
his use of pure colour and strong tone radiate an intense and sophisticated intensity.
Participated nationally and internationally in many solo and group exhibitions

Sonja Koczula
1976
1996 – 2004
Born in Osnabrück, Germany
Graduated in Art and Literature under Prof. Elke Hergert and Prof. Hartmut Girke
and Lithography with Acad. Rat Thomas Rohrmann M.A. at the University of
Osnabrück
Began her drawing and painting studies with figurative drawing. Later she moved into figurative
abstraction further reducing the human form to more simple abstraction allowing the human form to
become more detached and removed. Through her visual language her images become shadows of
moment, as a trace of faintly visible writing, and through her work she invites the viewer to unlock the
mystery and to experience the joy which she feels in her creative vision.
Anne Wiltafsky, 2003
In seiner skriptoralen

“O Heaven, give me the brush of the long-stemmed Red Rose and the colours of the eternal Rainbow

„My works are deeply personal and illustrate both individual experiences and visual reminiscences.
They do not illustrate narrative themes or portray actual events but are images of my subconscious.
My work is influenced by universal spirituality and philosophy, through time, which is contained in
all possible forms of energy. Compositionally, my work is based on the subtle relationship between
radiant colour, texture and tone, and the harmonious rhythm of shape and line.

My paintings are visual translations of personal perceptions and experiences. From my imagination,
from what could be or from what presents itself, I express by using the dynamics of form and colour,
similar to the dynamics of a human relationship (between feelings and truth). The tension I express in
both colour and form is, and will continue to be my main source of information.

Gerhard Schmidbauer
1959
Born in Korneuburg, Austria
Member of the “European Artists e.V.” Association (EAA), Velbert, Germany
Brother Gerald´s narration of many stories and fairy tales (a lecturer from Vienna-Strebersdorf,
Pensionat St. Josef) is the source of stimulus for his work. His Grandfather was a talented
Draughtsman.
begabter Zeichner.
From Schmidbauer´s early development to his present work, Man has been the Central source of inspiration, from which many questions arise: (where
have we come from, where are we going, why and how)? Many questions are both realised and represented in the form of painting and printmaking.
He believes technical experience and skills are acquired through observation, practice and self belief. Schmidbauer has had no formal Art Education,
rather his experience and personal development are thanks to his friendship with the Austrian painter and sculptor Eva Mazzucco.
Bildhauerin Eva Mazzucco.

“My work centres around the theme of “displacement” and “lost identity”. Research into my father´s
Scottish heritage where Gaelic was the first spoken language, is based on evidence gathered from the
National Gallery of Scotland concerning the 19th C “Highland Clearances” and old, family letters.
Together with information gathered from my mother´s East European heritage, combined with E
European religious imagery, this forms the basis for a strong, visual language resulting in deeply
personal and starkly beautiful yet powerful images or “Criomagan” (Gaelic for “Fragments”) of historical
family “displacement.”

My works are based on spontaneous visions that I transfer onto illustrative means. My emotional opinion
subconsciously attracts me towards selection of an appropriate material and technique to demonstrate
my thoughts to the viewer. This subconscious control helps me to keep searching and finding new ways
of display.

THE 1° INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF EUROPEAN
ARTISTS e.V.
ESSEN / VELBERT, GERMANY, 20
1° INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM DES EUROPEAN
ARTISTS e.V.
ESSEN / VELBERT, DEUTSCHLAND, 2003
The first International Symposium of “European Artists e.V.” held
in Essen-Velbert was a unique coming together of distinguished
contemporary artists from Eastern and Western Europe, Kuwait,
Egypt, India and Cuba.
Das erste Internationale European Artists e.V. Symposium in
This prestigious International event consisted of 10 days of hard
work in an aesthetically charged environment, where artists
shared their professional experiences and personal means of
expression. The individual sensitivity of each artist was reflected
in the many different works created, producing a real richness of
expression and emotion. The energetic and dynamic expression
reflected in the chromatic vigour of pure colour (reminiscent of
Fauvism) as expressed in the action paintings could be seen
alongside work which possessed a lyrical, restrained elegance,
expressed through the use of subtle tonal values.
In Essen/Velbert, we were presented with unique personalities,
individual aesthetic values and distinguished works of art. Both
artists and their works of art captured the attention of the public
in a philosophical and enigmatic way, their work a fusion of reality
versus the imaginary. In this creative environment, were we were
invited to observe in silence and wonderment.
On behalf of all the artists who participated in this prodigious
event, I would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Karola
Teschler, the International Director of European Artists and to
thank her for her immense contribution to this highly successful,
international event.
Velbert, 8. May 2003

Epilog / Nachwort
“Art is Wealth” said Joseph Beuys. This is a
popular concept of our economic-oriented times.
‘Consequently, art cannot satisfy the restlessness
of human beings, but rather it drives them further in
their search to attain their highest ideal, which only
then can fulfil them.
Francisco told “Brother Wolf” about the murdering
and greedy monster in the legend of Gubbio´s
rapacious wolf, knowing that Gubbio is a part of every
human soul. He must be tamed; Art has the power
to be the food which satisfies us. This is the reason
why we are working together at the International
European Artists Symposium, under the inspiration
and leadership of the President: Karola Teschler,
who has given us the space to come and work
together - irrespective of nationality.
Different languages and cultures provide no barriers.
Here we create and exchange ideas and are united
in reciprocal exuberance. Twenty nations, men and
women of equal sympathies and curiosities project
their different realities. The network of friendships is
the real Wealth. This is a powerful gift, which can
only develop.
Father Laurentius U. Englisch OFM
gefällt unserem Wirtschaftsorientierten Jahrhundert;
weiterzugeben.

3° International European Artists Symposium in St. Michael i. Obersteiermark
25. Juni - 4. Juli 2004
3° International European Artists Symposium in St. Michael to be held in Upper Styria
on June 25 - July 4 2004
The Artist Georg Brandner and the Austrian Waste Recycling Company Anton Mayer (Family
Säumel) from St. Michael, upper Styria, will meet to discuss the issue: –
“The Creative Potential of Recycling”.
During this week, Artists will be given the artistic freedom to both redefine and interpret the concept
of “waste recycling” using their creative talents, together with the recyclable materials provided.
Therein lies the challenge: the perceived concept of “waste” versus the concept of “creative
innovation”. The aesthetic use of waste everyday-material harks back to the ready-mades and
the assemblages of Neo-Dadaism in the late 1950s. It is anticipated that the concept of “waste”
and “recycling” will be viewed in a creative and positive light, thus substantiating the concept of
“regeneration”.
Under the Direction of Georg Brandner, Artists from many European countries have been invited to
participate in this International Symposium, to be held at Mayer (Säumel) Ltd. They will bring both
an international perspective and aesthetic flavour to this stimulating event and in so doing, can only
promote and highlight these issues. It promises to be both an exhilarating and truly inspirational
occasion.
Karl Heinz Schwarzmann
Im Gedankenaustausch zwischen dem Maler Georg Brandner und dem Entsorgungsunternehmen
Anton Mayer (Familie Säumel) in St. Michael i.
